HS2’s new superhub station, Old Oak Common in West London, will offer passengers seamless travel making journeys in, out and around London’s transport system quick, easy and convenient.
As well as being a key stop on Britain’s brand new high speed railway, offering quick, reliable and comfortable journeys to the Midlands, the North and Scotland, it will also be the 42nd stop on London’s new Elizabeth Line. From here London’s West End will be just 10 minutes away, and Liverpool Street station just 20 minutes away. Air passengers will be able to get to Heathrow using either the Elizabeth Line or the Heathrow Express, with journey’s taking as little as 10 minutes.
Beyond London, Old Oak Common it will serve as a gateway to Wales and the Southwest, through Great Western Mainline services. This once industrial area of West London is being transformed into a thriving super-connected neighbourhood, and an exciting development that will build a legacy for the local community, to be enjoyed for generations to come.

The UK government committed to this project only to scale it back. I just don’t see the point, once you go sliding into a tackle, you must follow through with it. No point pulling out.
@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard Месяц назад
Unfortunately our government went insane after the Brexit vote. When they cut back HS2 they tried to "salt the Earth" that HS2 was going to be built on, by selling off the land to prevent the next government reversing the decision, without it costing a lot extra. I'm hoping that a future government upgrades the West London Line and connects it directly to Old Oak Common. With the released capacity of HS2, hopefully there can be more than one train per hour going from Watford Junction, through the line from Old Oak Common to Gatwick Airport.

The map at 0.08 is misleading, implying connectivity/interchanges with nearby lines that won't actually be there even five years after it is completed. It isn't going to be linked into the London overground, Central line, Southern line or the West coast main line as implied in the graphic. 🙁 Upon opening HS2 at Old Oak Common will only link with the GWR mainline and the Elizabeth line. Are they even making provision to link into all the other nearby lines to make it a truly well connected high speed hub? Old Oak Common - a missed opportunity.
@neilboulton9813
@neilboulton9813 Месяц назад
It may well be misleading but can you explain to me as the Overground, Central Line and GWR are all on different alignments/routes, so the right decision was to integrate Elizabeth Line with GWR and HS2. There is no point integrating it with the West Coast Mainline as they are effectively the same route. So how would you have knitted it together for maximum connectivity remembering land availability and existing roads etc?

@DavidShepheard Месяц назад
Central London is via Crossrail, now renamed the "Elizabeth Line". London Overground lines that go either side of Old Oak Common go to Clapham Junction and Richmond, in the West and to Stratford in the East. It's the old North London Line, now about to be renamed the "Mildmay Line". There is also a branch that splits off the West London Line (from Clapham Junction) and that joins the Euston mainline up to Watford Junction.

London gets 2 high speed trains station. That has connections to other trains. But not so in Birmingham. They get just 1 high speed train station. That doesn’t connect with any other train service! Could not find the money to build the track to new street station. (Less than 500 meters away.) But they could find BILLIONS to build underground tunnels from central London to the other side of London! 👍 Just another example of London disproportionately benefiting, from a so called NATION project!

I blame the Vikings. They went to France and became Normans, who then invaded England. The North stood up to them and been 'harrowed' ever since. We should make Norway pay reparations which would then fund our infrastructure projects in the North.

@chrisoddy8744
@chrisoddy8744 Месяц назад
The problem with tunnelling to New Street is that you don't just have to spend money on the tunnels, but also on the underground station - Euston and OOC are located in areas easy to build in with fairly minimal clutter, a trait that Curzon Street also shares. New Street, by contrast, is hemmed in on all sides by dense city centre, meaning you'd have to use expensive TBMs rather than a box construction methods for a seven platform station. Curzon Street is also a two minute walk away from Moor Street (which, under the Midland Rail Hub proposals, will take over some of New Street's suburban services) and is getting a direct tram connection to both New Street and Snow Hill, so it's not completely isolated. Basically, they saved several (most likely the double digits of) billions without massively compromising service or connections. I have no doubt that a New Street terminus was at the very least proposed during the design stage, but for the reasons listed above discounted as overly expensive and impractical. (Also, Birmingham gets a second station, technically, although that's just to serve the airport. Does offer a fast connection onto the WCML at Birmingham International, though)

Incredible world class example of catastrophic large infrastructure project fail. Partly stemming from the initial hubristic brief to be 'the fastest" - meaning insane choices on route (less bends, more precious habitat destruction, more tunnels). The whole thing given free reign to sink billions into a construction black hole ( who can even begin to imagine the wealth generated for certain stakeholders), inevitably resulting in a political backlash. The people responsible should be ashamed.
