to the people going “erm it’s almost like being an irredeemable jerk is his whole character 🤓” it’s possible to make an irredeemable jerk a likable/non-unbearably-annoying character without pumping them out of the tumblr sexyman machine (examples: Eric Cartman, Azula, Frieza, Yzma, Joker, maybe Homelander) (edit: also saying his whole character is being an asshat is admitting he’s a poorly written character)
@@SmartCreeper Flat characters don’t have to be bad but being a flat character and only having two episodes doesn’t excuse poor writing. For example, this lovely show Smiling Friends here, had one episode for basically a year and the characters were pretty well fleshed out even if they weren’t fully developed. Like I said, not a valid excuse.
also idk what happened to that one reply about me being wrong for complimenting konosuba but honestly they were kinda right for that so I’m just gonna edit it out
Agreed, i always felt like they went completely overboard with making Jax a jerk that he's just unlikeable as shit Which wouldn't be bad if all the other characters didn't TOLERATE HIM
What? Gangle cried when he stepped on her mask, Ragatha was completely exasperated by his taunting, and Zooble was annoyed by him. I’m not even entirely sure what makes him “overboard”. As far as I saw his characterization was fine
I love the polish of digital circus’s art style, but I’m getting worried it’s gonna fall into the same trap that other visually unique web cartoons have where style takes precedence over substance. Smiling friends is one of the few web cartoons I’ve seen with writing to back up the visual concepts.
The first two episodes had great writing and the whole thing was storyboarded before the pilot came out, so I'd say we're good unless they make another season
I kinda feel bad for this channel kinda That the most popular video on here is a ragebait meme on a show and a character it doesn’t enjoy Gonna be sad looking back at this.
I don't know the exact quote, but I'm pretty sure even Goose (the creator of the show) said Jax is supposed to be an irredeemable shitbag, which is fine because I do find him hilarious, but I still hope we get some development on him that will at least humanize him a little bit, like maybe show us he wasn't ALWAYS an irredeemable shitbag.
Yep, we don't need to agree with or sympathize with a character in order to understand them. I don't want him doing any good deeds for the entire show, at most choosing not to actively torment other characters would be enough character growth.
I ain’t even watched the damn thing and my first reaction was being annoyed at it, but Jesus Christ the comments are just hating to hate, like goddamn it’s just a pilot, it’s not like there’s been 6 seasons of that character not having consequences
Yeah lol, it barely has 3 episodes and people are acting like it's a recurring problem plaguing a series to it's downfall after season three were it began losing it's charm
gonna give my own take on this video, this isn't me trying to start a fight with anyone, so reader, do me a favor and take a chill pill now, it should kick in by the time I'm done while I agree that in the second episode, Jax is almost a completely different character in terms of cruelty, he's not that annoying in the first episode. Because, at least from my perspective, he's meant to be more than just an asshole for the sake of being an asshole. He represents our own mischievous natures. It's my opinion that the rest of the cast, barring Pomni and Caine, is meant to symbolize unhealthy forms of coping with the circus (Gangle - Putting up a mask and pretending to be fine, Zooble - Apathy at the world around you, Kinger - Full on disassociation, Ragatha - Trying to help yourself through helping others), and Jax is at the mercy of the worst of these coping mechanisms, falling back on humor, with no regard for the world around you. Similar to Zooble's coping mechanism, and we see them interacting on equal footing. Or- maybe this was just my brain's attempt at excusing all the malice from Jax, before the second episode dropped, where he seems to care a lot less about entertaining himself, and a lot more about general mayhem and chaos. Which, to me, that's not obnoxious, moreso boring. Pilot Jax wouldn't have walked through the portal with everyone else pretending all was dandy, he'd be watching the empire crumble and laughing about it. Not JUST because he's an asshole, but because Caine's taken everything BUT his dickish tendencies by dragging him to the circus, left him with nothing but the personality he can cope with. But no, he doesn't care about the spectacle, he just cares about funny violence and chaos like a good lil sexyman!!! I don't care if the video's about Pilot Jax, if OP hates Jax in general, my point is that me personally, I saw the point of Jax in episode one. And I don't see it anymore in episode two, and that makes me sad.
i agreed with basically everything in this comment until you said sexyman you had such a good take until then I’m so said 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤
@@thursday8382 nah it’s all good i was just kidding too (though people who unironically find jax attractive let alone physically should probably seek professional help)
Of course it is. It’s an ugly quirky art style, that’s why it’s so popular. In just about every circumstance any series or creator with the art style is only popular for those reasons.
@@zzodysseuszzHow is it ugly at all? People have praised it for being expressive and treating each character uniquely, and rightfully so. No two characters are animated in the same way.
@@qntebanI mean, having a recognizable art style and and a cast of characters is the most important thing in a pilot, just like the premise of the show, the whole point of a pilot episode is the present the art style and the concept of the show and hook people's attention, every cartoon is basically like this, now we'll have to see if they'll flash out the gang in an interesting way
Dang with looking at the comment section, I thought people started liking digital circus after the 2nd episode :/ but to each their own. I get how people can dislike Jax though but for me he is fun to hate and I don’t see him as annoying. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t sound like a squeaky toy.
idk why OP wants to make the point (beyond wanting attention) about the digital circus at all , its pretty clear its just an homage to classic 3d cartoons we all grew up with (ie jimmy nutron Lol) with an adult twist . where as smiling friends is more of a homage to the lack of shows like it on the air rn (ie superjail, venture bros, mr. sprinkles).
I’m not making any point other than I find the character annoying and smiling friends has nothing to do with this other than the “template” I used (also I changed the title to nerf the amount of attention it was getting so idk what that wanting attention part was abt)
You turned it into ragebait? What part of that isn't about attention? Also, better examples, dude. You mention Cartman, Homelander, and the Joker as "an irredeemable jerk, a likable/non-unbearably-annoying character," but what's actually likable about them? They're edgy but lack depth beyond "I'm evil cus the world." Here's a list of actually likable yet irredeemable characters: Tony Soprano, Jimmy McNulty, some from OZ, Alejandro in Sicario, Leland Palmer from Twin Peaks, Nicky Santoro from Casino, Alex from A Clockwork Orange, Jinx from Arcane , Tyler Durden, Col. Kurtz, all in Succession, most in The Departed, Lucas Hood from Banshee etc. All for the most part irredeemable people who have character. Do you want Jax to have an OZ-style arc? Pomni to face Tuco Salamaca? Kinger to be like Christian Bale in The Machinist? What would make them better beyond "tumblr sexyman machine"? You're sounding like the SJWs you're making fun of. (not that i care, i just don't see sport in easy targets) Yes, the YT show characters are two-dimensional-it's an internet cartoon. If you go into anything with certain expectation you will always be annoyed and disappointed because something will always fail to be what you want.
@@yorukage5926 I don’t get your point- so he entered when he was a teenager, so he doesn’t age or mature or anything? Yeah, you’re not making any sense here.
@@cheesecake_luvr if i had a nickel for every show runner of a cartoon/animation proyect directed to adults that has confess a crush for one of the most hated characters i would had 3 nickels , which isnt much , but is weird it happen thrice (mindy khaling , viviane pop and glitch)
Ya know, Lyle voice acted on the new episode. He included a 'Master of Unlocking' reference that probably 10% of the audience got and did the compressed fat guy/ discord mod voice.
just watched episode two and, i’ll say, it looks like they’ve took zero criticism on board. jax is still very much a poorly written character. the entire show just feels like a hfjone fever dream fanfiction
with what goose is saying on Twitter, she needs to learn having a character that’s nigh-universally hated but will be around and given the spotlight throughout the whole show will not make her or her show cool and quirky.
Kinda concerned about the direction his character is headed in now that episode 2 is out. At first he was an insufferable asshole, but now, with the way he talks to Gangle, he’s starting to give off abusive husband vibes. Not to mention all of that is played for laughs.
Gooseworx said that through the episodes Jax will get worst till he does something unforgivable She also said that out of all the characters Jax is the one that deserves to be trapped in the circus the most so it must be some kind of punishment
