I love your mindset. In todays world there's not enough appreciation for the old and outdated once the new comes along. All of a sudden something that was once cherished is now thrown to the trash. These old pieces of history can cut it as good as they ever did and as you say are worthy of our respect. Thank you for reminding us of that and for the excellent video.

Like an old cowboy in TEXAS told me about his old revolver and the new guns ,, if you can't do it with 6,, you can't do it at all!!! It's not about the amount of bullets,, it's about the shooter,,, 🔫 Awesome video!!👍

These old single shots are not as abundant and much more expensive at gun shows than they used to be. I can remember a time when dealers used to keep them in barrels alongside their displays and sold them for $25 to $50. Good times.

Excellent video.You hit the nail on the head when you said they are tools.I can still remember when a person could go into a farm supply store or even some general stores and buy a single shot.They are probably the most dependable firearm ever made,they are so simple,less moving parts.Now with H&R stopping production on them,new ones are getting hard to find & they don't have the same quality that they used to have.I'll take a used single shot anyday.
@edgarroop3689

Please tell me you're just kidding about H&R not making any more.

I agree with every bit you said, ive always loved em and a single shot was what got my first rabbit, squirrel, and buck, and that one happen to be a single shot 410. i own a single shot 410, 20 gauge and 12 gauge and like to use them more than any other gun i own. Great video sir and glad to know theres people out there that have the same passion for em.

When the old mountaneer hung up his flintlock or percussion long-rifle he generally picked up a single-shot shotgun. It wasnt much of a change. Both guns were single shots and long barrels were still favored. The pawnshops up in the mountains are full of old single-shot shotguns. Those with money to spend bought a Winchester 37 or an "Ivory Johnson" Champion. You did well friend. John Davis jax fl

Thanks, a very good video. We need more of this type of thing today. I came to this video because I recently found a hammerless Hopkins & Allen single 12ga at an estate sale. It needs work but I'm sure it will shoot again. It evidently hung on an old timers wall till he passed. No one in the family knew the story behind it.

I always have at least one single-shooter around my house. And why not? They're simple, robust, and reliable. You can't reasonably ask much more than that. The single shot also makes you become a better shot just by necessity.

I grew up shooting 16s. That was a long time ago. (Harry Truman was president when I was born!) I like the 16 ga, and I like light, handy single shots for squirrel hunting. I found an old Stevens 16 at a gun show a few years ago. The walnut stock, darkened by age, made the gun worth the $75 asking price. Sixteen ga shells are not always plentiful, so I worked up a hand load using Pyrodex. Problem solved. The squirrels don't know the difference between my loads and the factory stuff. I also have a single shot 20, and I load my own using Pyrodex for that one, too. My Mossberg 500 hasn't been to the woods in a long time. I'd rather use the single shots.

I liked the video. Two weeks ago I was at a local gun show and walked out with a single shot "hardware store" "Newport Model WN" 16 Gauge Shotgun. I'm not sure why I bought it, other than I had a wanting to get a single shot 16 gauge shotgun. I'm really not into hunting, I guess I just wanted it?, and the more I think about it, the more I'm glad I snagged it!!! I think it would be great if people took a second look at traditional firearms. Thanks!

One caveat with old shotguns: If you get one make sure it will handle modern high-pressure rounds. This is especially true if you see barrels and receivers made of Damascus steel: They were intended for blackpowder shotgun shells operating at lower pressure. Let a gunsmith check it out before you put modern ammo in it.

The shotgun itself will have no trouble shooting buckshot. How well it will pattern is a different story. Try a few different brands/loads to see how your particular gun shoots them. Use the brand/load that patterns best in you gun.
