Funny you should say that, Quite a lot of corollas excluding the 86, used the same 4AG for about 10 years, the one in the video being no exception. And I don’t know, apart from the rwd, and live axle and lightness, it’ll probably feel like an old Corolla to drive, just a small runabout to prevent them carrying tofu uphill on foot, or at least how Takumi and Natsuki describes it. Take a look at AE86s outside of Initial D, Fast and furious and the drifting world, and you’ll see quite a few just used as a characters tool to get to the shops. Essentially it’s UKs version of the Ford Capri… though at least Toyota didn’t revive its name as a silly electric crossover.

@MGR99
@MGR99 2 года назад
@@BigAl2-u7e The point is, cars have been seen as much more than just transportation from pretty much the beginning, a statement that holds true when you look at how many types of motorsport and even types of cars have existed. But even then, many, many people fail to see the car as more than just transport, which is a bit sad, cause of how much joy and pleasure a good car can bring. It's a treat to all senses, a beautiful design is something you can always look at and appreciate when you get out or even from the drivers seat. Then the noise of the engine and exhaust can be very musical, something that just makes these tones that can't be replicated with anything else. The feedback you get from the steering wheel and what you can feel from your seat, the car communicating the road and what it's doing to you. Even the smells add to the experience. But, you will fail to experience these things, if you look at the car as nothing but an appliance, and buy one that matches that criteria. And it's not like you have to get something expensive to experience these things, just getting a simple old car will give you a good taste of this.

I have always defended Toyota's rather systematic approach to design and engineering, but I realise now, with the interesting design of the new Corolla hatchback, that Clarkson was right here. There is no reason, and we know this now, that this car couldn't have been all of these things but also look good, after all, changing the body alone does not affect reliability so long as it is done well, and Toyota always finds a way to do it properly.

Oddly enough, about a year after this was made, the Ford Focus came along and as we know, that ripped up the rulebook, the first 'regular' car that was practical, cheap to run, safe and reliable, and best of all, great to drive so long as you avoided the 1.4 petrol.

One of many examples of where JC hates on an objectively good car because it isn't "exciting" or "interesting" enough. But he wasn't wrong about the reliability. Even today (2024) you STILL see some of this shape Corollas pottering around on UK roads, more than 25 years after they stopped making them. Now THAT is good build quality! Also, it may have been plain to look at, but I think that has helped it age gracefully. Less really is more sometimes.

This is all true of any of the "mainstream" Toyotas. The Corolla, Camry, Avalon, stuff like that all has the same similar bland feel. Every once in a while Toyota comes out with something cool and funky though, like the Sera, MR2, Celica, and I'm not saying that because they're "sporty" cars. They just have cool design elements to them in both the exterior and interior, plus they drive a lot better than the Camrys and Corollas and stuff

How can I have “fun” and “stir my soul” when I’m on the way to work? I could arrive in a spaceship and my day would still suck. The Corolla has the decency not to demand that the driver must have fun when all we want is to get to somewhere. That is why so many people appreciate it and in fact, secretly love it. It gets out of your way. Clarkson uses the car’s greatest strength as a black mark against it. He’s missed the point entirely.

Controversial opinion, but all Toyotas are boring to drive if you're just going around town and not doing anything particularly spicy. I own a GT86 and yes, when youre on it, even a little bit, it is one of the finest driving cars you can buy. When you're not and youre stuck behind drivers or on a motorway, its responsive, yes, but it gives you zero indication that it'll put down a hot lap only bettered by cars with touching 300hp and put a smile on your face that'll look nicked from a Cheshire Cat. You have a bit of exhaust note, but that's about it. It almost feels deliberately boring.
