So refreshing to hear someone with an opinion. Motorcycling journalist now days seem to have lost this ability. They seem to simply reharsh the companies press release, providing the public with very little insight into what the bike is like in the real world. I hope Triumph appreciate your upfront and honest evaluation. it is what is needed. An opinion is a good thing, it leaves us all free to agree or disagree, but most of all it has given us cause to think. Many thanks.

absolutely correct. Professional moto journlists want to keep their access to manufacturers, so they will always tone down any critisisms that they have and invariably you end up watching an extended advertisement/music video for the bike rather than an objective review. This is why guys like TMF, provide a vital service in giving us riders the actual real world low down on a bike, and so help us make better choices when it comes time to pull up a chair with the dealer.

One thing I seriously enjoy more on the 2012 is the dash. I love analogue needle tachometers. I think they are akin to an excellent looking time keeping piece. I seriously hate these new tft displays that are coming out.

Can't get enough of your reviews, you have a magnificent speaking voice. Plus you're a great salesman! I've been riding an EX500 for the past three years and have been thinking about what to get next for quite some time. Your reviews have really helped influence my decision. Hate seeing reviews of riders talking only about speed and wheelie-ability, just not how I ride. Thanks so much for the great work!

Really interesting contrast and compare. I own a 13 Street Triple R in matte gray and I LOVE the looks; I am more attracted to the "R" version for 2018 than the colors offered on the RS version (more the red subframe for the rear vs. silver than anything else).. Like TMF, I am a massive fan of what I already have so there's no urge to get a new bike for me however I am at the same time very interested to stay up on the current offerings and it is content like this that speaks directly to me. Thanks for doing what you do; I along with many others value it very much.

Excellent and really enjoyable video. A proper comparison by a biker for other bikers; packed full of answers to questions we'd all be asking. The most fitting compliment I can pay you is that in my opinion you're the finest reviewer of motorbikes since Jeff Stone who also knew instinctively what details other bikers would want to know about the machine he was talking about.

I agree, I have a 2005 speed triple and the whole look of the bike is much better than either of these two models. The new models try to look overly slick and it just doesn't work. It's gradually losing the streetfighter aesethic.

In most parts a fair and helpful review. Thorough and well thought out vlog. I agree about the paintwork and plumped for the glittery black 765RS but agree the stickers and red lining aren't the best looking and would have also preferred the classic black with gold rims mix. As for the arrow can - not sure it has made much of difference on mine - the joys of regulations
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yes sadly it seems the optional cans on today's Triumphs are constrained by regs - I recently rode a Vance and Hines equipped scrambler back to back with a standard one and I couldn't tell any significant difference! ....you couldn't even remove the baffle from the V&H pipe as it was welded in!!
@farazbaber7239
@farazbaber7239 7 лет назад
TheMissendenFlyer indeed, the EU arrow can is welded in although the Triumph website shows a non EU compliant one as an option - whether U.K. Dealers fit them and leave this at your peril come MOT is another matter - but the removable baffle option is there - just not sure it's worth the agro. Great if you could do a Ducati cafe scrambler review at some point - you know the one that looks like a themed JPS set up.

Great video as always Mr TMF! I think I chose well buying my 2016 Street last year. Got the extra bits like the ABS and fuel gauge which the 2012 misses. I like the new 765 but when you compare my red standard red 2016 against the 2017 S model, it just doesn't do it for me and it looks rather bland. The same I feel is with the RS, there's too much black and it looks a bit dull, not enough shiny bits. All I wish for is that I'd have known about the 10th Anniversary 675 and then I could've got a gold one. Overall I'm happy with my 675, unless they bring out a 765 RT version where I could maybe have panniers, some wind protection with a screen and maybe cruise control.

I stopped at a service on M1 just to see the new vid and it did not disappoint! :) I prefer the look of the new bike on the front and the front-side department, but the old one definitely better on the rear side. Since I'm a rather big chap (6' 5), I look a bit.. funny on these, but perhaps if the 2018 Speed Triple will come with the TFT, will keep the under-seat exhausts and if they just make it lighter, to at least match the Superduke, I will be hyped as never before. Well about £5000 I reckon, not worth it in my view....the new bike doesn't deliver 100% more thrills than my 2012 (which is probably worth around £5000), I'd say it's about 20% better, so if you could get one for £6000 I'd upgrade, at £10,000 naa....

Thank you for this lovely review! I did a huge misstake (or not?) by test riding the 765 RS last week and i kinda "fell in love". what an amazing machine, so much more usable on the streets than my current supersport 750cc suzuki (sure 150bhp but where to use them somewhat within the range of the speed limits?). But unfortunately my wallet says no to a brand new bike, but however if i get rid of my current bike i will be well in range for the 675 R (or RX?). im looking for the model between the one you got and the absolut newest one, namely the 2013-2016 model with abs, a different tac and the side (under bike?) exhaust. Watched a prev vid of your about the top 5 mods to get for a street triple, and that break fluid resevoar is pretty sweet looking! thanks for that, i wouldn't have discovered that myself and kept on ride with whatever is stock on the bike (namely plastic... eww from now on). What is the difference between your 675R and the slightly newer 2013-2016 675R? is it less or more the same bike with another exhaust and tac or is there more in difference? seen bikes with your type of seat and more like the 765 with a splitted seat, but i can't figure out which one belongs to the R or if it is just 2 different options from the factory. BR and cheers! MK2
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yep "more or less" the same bike - they had to strangle it with those underslung exhausts (I think for Euro 4) and they changed the gearing to make first much taller, this had the effect of taming the acceleration somewhat and the bike losing some of its hooligan character - on the plus side you do gain a fuel gauge and ABS which are both well worth having....
@Jesperrescue
@Jesperrescue 7 лет назад
Let me guess first gear gets longer but 2-6th is similar ish so the topspeed aint that much of a difference then? So the older model didn't come with a fuel gauge, but u had the average fuel consumption and the range left on the current amount of fuel in the tank on the old right? So why would anyone really care for an gauge aslong as you know how many more miles one have left before it's empty. Oh well. The only experience i have is the 765cc. Is that similared geared as your short 1st geared 675?

I've converted from a modern naked to the T120 but my mates all ride Street Triples and definitely prefer their older models to the new. Incidentally (completely unrelated) I wanted to ask what ear plugs you use? I noticed them in your Scottish adventures.

They are from Custom fit guards - see >> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nuZldx3mAKw.html ...and mention my name for a discount!

Hi TMF. Having used the AuroTeck plugs for a while now and finding them increasingly painful on my ear canals, I made an appointment at Custom Guards after work on Friday evening at their premises in Leamington Spa. Richard is a great guy and me feel very welcome and comfortable throughout the process. I would thoroughly recommend Custom Fit Guards to anyone that watches your channel. And I got 10% discount for mentioning your name! Looking forward to receiving my new ear guards in the next few days. Will let you know how I get on.

I just sold my modified 2005 Speedie (in gloss black and gold). It was very similar looking to your 2012. I agree with with your opinion on the tail ends. So I have recently purchased a 2017 Speedie (S) to overcome the tail end issue. It is gloss black and I am painting the rims gloss gold. I have fitted twin SC-Project "silencers" which sound superb. I feel the Triumph management team should be patted on the back for producing such beautiful machines, I and my daughters love them.

Love your video and especially relevant for me since I am currently deciding between the same 2012 R black/gold with arrow cans or a 2016 matt silver RX with red wheels. Both bikes are gorgeous. I can buy the 2012 which as 7k miles and looks in mint condition for $6,000 dollars. The 2016 RX with only 400 miles can be purchased for $8k. Both are great deals. I had a 2015 Street Triple R and loved it. Something about the black/gold and the Speed Triple cans makes this a very tough decision for me. Which would you buy if it was your money and why?? Any thoughts/comments are appreciated. Thanks!!!

I’d have the 2012 due it’s lower gearing (more hooligan than the 2016) and of course that glossy paint scheme - the money saved is a bonus...

Thanks mate. Another good review. Great to see you calling it as you see it. As we discussed previously, the 2017 has more power at the top end...which is useless on the road. I like the new display. Nice comparison mate. One thing I do like about both of them is that they have fixed cockpit and headlights. That is, they don't move with the handlebars. Looking at a naked bike, but don't like the feeling of having nothing in front of you like maybe an S1000R, MT09 or Monster. Do these feel like that to ride? I.e nothing in your field of view.

I have a 2018 Street Triple R. I have a Remus slip on, bespoke heated grips, sliders, blah blah. All came with it. That said, I had my eye on a 2012 when the other came up. He has to get rid of it and it already had the upgrades for just 1k more (US). I picked it up for 7k US, with 2.5k on the clock. It just my fave bike ever and I’ve been riding for 30 years. All that said, the 2012 is a better looking bike, no doubt about it. I have the black gloss paint and it’s brilliant, but the real difference is the black chassis on mine is just sublime. It will always be more capable than me and is super confidence inspiring. All graft machines and the sun will be our Wednesday. Thanks again for being so comprehensive. Your bike looks amazing!!!

I was holding out for the KTM 790 Duke but was very let down by it in the flesh, currently the Street Triple is the only thing that comes close to what I am after unless KTM do an "R" version of the 790 with less boring paint and a bit more umph as well as adjustable suspension and a little bit lighter wouldn't hurt either!

I had to search a bit to find a Phantom Black (Gloss) RS, which is just lovely. Not a fan of the Matte Ice, but I am obviously in the minority here in the states as most of the RS's I've seen are Matte. To each his own of course, but give me glossy every time. I think the "R" has the best look with the red subframe, again just an opinion. I have to say that I really appreciate your methodology when you put together your reviews (especially your long term's), great detail across the spectrum of ownership. Well done, mate!

Thanks TMF, great review as always. I am a fan of black but not gold or even gold and black and I also love the matt grey and wheel striping on the new model. I'm with you on the extra striping elsewhere, it's like they didn't know where to stop. With a different exhaust setup it will sound every bit as good as your bike i'm sure. I think what's important is that the positive points are what you said as the important things and the negatives are subjective. On looks I'm a fan of the new design but I also think your bike looks great too. If I didn't own a Street Triple I would buy the new model over the old model but like you if I already owned one I'm not sure I would buy the new model.

I brought the new street triple when it launched in may, I agree with most you said to be fair, the "looks" on the old made the choice more difficult, but the new upgrades on the 765 won it for me. Lovely comparison thank you for this. I must say I prefer the look of the new bike but this is subjective. I guess the old looked more basic and pure. I used to have the late 2010 street r until it got stolen so perhaps I am a bit tired of an old look. Although it would be interesting to see how close you can get the suspension set to match your weight and riding style. I know after I had mine done I swear it was like a different bike. I absolutely loved it. I also wonder if more basic models of street 765 will have more real life low down torque as this is tuned more for top end power. I am looking to get one version or the other at some point when some second hand will appear on the market. Ps I agree with cheap stickers ...what is it all about? Is it possible to remove them?

Thanks for that. It's the one I was waiting for. The thing that really naffs me off about the new bike is the plasticky thing between seat & tank. Totally obnoxious! I wish they'd given it to an Italian design house for finishing off. Triumphs attention to detail has improved, but it's still not in thevleague of say the Ducati Monster. The rider modes aren't necessary with the 675 engine unless you're ham fisted; it isn't a 200bhp Suzuki! And you can put stuff on the back seat of the old one, (probably not Mrs Flyers drum-kit but a club sandwich at least) without scratching any paintwork. But.....because of the Brembos and the ABS, I'd chose the new one over the old one. Having said that I wouldn't chose either but that's another story. Top vlog as always. I watch more of you in a week than the BBC nowadays. :-)
