The new video from 2018 is on • Old Welland Canal 2018
The third Welland Canal took a more direct path from Port Dalhousie to Allanburg leaving behind the Twelve Mile Creek route. From Allanburg the canal continued to follow the previous path with the exception of bypassing many of the canal downtown community centers. Construction on the canal was completed in 1887. The third canal no longer depended on the feeder canal for its source of water. Instead water was directly supplied from lake Erie via the canal itself. The canal was now 4.3 meters deep and its 26 stone locks had swelled to a dimension of 13.7 meters in width with a distance of 82.3 meters between lock gates.

Great video. I live in Newmarket ON these days but grew up in Port Colborne. As a boy scout in the early 1970's we hiked all through this area along the escarpment, including the train tunnel. I understand most of the area has been fenced off to the public between Thorold Stone Rd. and Glendale.

That was an awesome video Rene B. I have been to Thorold Lock 7 INN many times in the late 80's and 90's I never knew there was an old canal with 18 locks no less. Good job!!!

+andicus1. This was one of my intents to show people that we should not neglect the architecture and the hard work that went in to building this wonderful historic canal. René

It took my a few years to Get a drone that was able to produce the quality I wanted to record this wonderful structure. I am glad to let you all know its done and I will put it on RU-vid ASAP. Thanks for all your comments and yes you can walk along the canal.

Part of the lock nearest to Glendale Rd has fallen in since that video. DAMN I wish somebody would pony up to save what's left and make it all trail friendly, even as much as possible some parts boat-able

There is little interest in the canals reconstruction or restoration, it is almost as if nobody cares anymore about the history of the canal!

I went exploring last Sunday and followed the old locks along Oakdale and Bradley Sts. I take it the locks were covered over on Glendale Ave. and at the top of Bradley St. Does any conduit run under Glendale or is the water in that section of canal just from rain run-off? I take it this section was the second Welland Canal. Amazing to think that all that was done without heavy machinery.

I went on Google Maps to get a better perspective of how the old canal ran. Is that the old canal that parallels route 58(Davis Road)? Another question, south of Beaverdams Road the old and new canal followed the same route until it reached Welland, is that correct? Have you attempted any videos of the creeks that run over the escarpment? The Twelve Mile and The Twenty are two that come to mind? I find the topography fascinating.
@SkyviewArts
@SkyviewArts 7 лет назад
yes, if you see the main Welland canal west of Davis rd., look to the left you will see part of the old canal. The old canal merges there with the new canal up to Welland. At Port Robinson it again goes its own rout through Welland on the west side. No I haven't attempted any other videos up on the escarpment. PS. there is a great history of the Canals at the Welland Canal Centre Lock 3.

Can you mountain bike along the sides of the canal? I kinda see some trails on each side..
@SkyviewArts

You could give it a try, it is narrow but in some spots you would have to walk.

Let's arrange a date to meet up at the canals and document what's left there? We'll draw crowds and interest just with our presence.

Does this old canal route disappear when it reaches the Thorold Stone Route? It seems like there is no trace of the old canal. Enjoyed the video very much. Thank you.
@SkyviewArts
@SkyviewArts 7 лет назад
No, the canal continues past Thorold stone Rd, however it switches over to the Beaverdam Rd side on the west side of the new Welland canal but not much of the old locks are visible. It is sad to see that the old canal is so neglected.

The drone is very stable and the pilot can see via the iPad exactly were he is going in order to avoid pending danger. By the way there is a walkway along the canal.

I would not recommend it, because the canal is also used as a spillover for the main Welland shipping canal.

barbaranne boyer , I fully agree with you, there should be a documentary made to honour all the workers that built this wonderful part of our history. I will check if I can find the funds and the background documents to do so.
