I grew up in Welland, my father was Chief Engineer on these types of ships, I remember going through the locks with him when I was a child. It was a really cool experience.
How I miss the RMR report every Tuesday night.................I miss the down home, honest laughter and Rick's natural ability to make anything relatable.
In this video, Rick is actually exiting into Lake Ontario coming north from Lake Erie. Lock 1 is in St. Catharines, lock 8 is in Port Colborne. Good fun video for anybody not familiar with the process.
You all have NO idea how much I envy Rick, as someone who has lived a few blocks from the Welland Canal my entire life and would do almost anything, to travel through it on a laker!
7 years later after this video is posted my dad's out there working on that ship right now!! We're from lethbridge Alberta and he's definitely enjoying his time! Aside from covid issues lol
Great one! No not *that* Great One, I mean this segment. I looked forward to it since it was announced, and it didn't disappoint. It's Boatnerd-worthy :)
@@bilgeratjim Lakers are traditionally called" boats", not ships, even the 1000 foot ones on the upper lakes. The ocean going freighters are called "salties". Whitefish Bay is a bulk lake boat operated by Canada Steamship Lines with their headquarters in Montreal, for cargoes of stone, coal, grain, iron ore and the like, certainly not a tanker either.
