I’ve liked a game so much I bought it on all three consoles it was available on ($25 indie game with the third copy being $15 cuz I caught it on sale by pure luck, so I didn’t spend like $180 on one game), solely to support the creators 😅
Bobby Shewan Blasphemous. Incredible Metroidvania with a really dark twist on religious art from the developer’s home country, Spain. Everything about it is amazing; atmosphere, gameplay mechanics (primarily the combat, being a game that forces you to learn to how to parry/riposte), the artwork and animation, everything. If you like Castlevania even in the slightest, you would love this game.
You play as the titular arcade character Lanky Kong and his accomplice, Kiddy Kong as they travel through several l o n g worlds to defeat the nefarious King K. Stool and rescue your precious apple horde
Don’t worry, Daddy Caddy, the bee-vine was adorable. Just like the bees. Glad I’m not the only one who likes the little buzzers beecause their buzziness is really important to the planet.
"Those are some tight hitboxes! Yooka Laylee is better than Dark Souls II!" I laughed at this so loud I had to take a deep breath to calm down. Caddy's not wrong tho, anything is better than DS2's hitboxes.
Isn't dark souls known for its immersive, responsive and reaction based yet challenging and punishing combat? Poor hit detection in such a game is a recipe for disaster.
Here’s the thing Caddy. From everything you’ve said, it sounds like Impossible Lair controls closer to the original trilogy in terms of weight and feel than Retro’s games. Not to say they aren’t great games too, but they did alter a lot in terms of overall game feel. I’d say give the SNES games a shot with the way you’re talking
"I demand pictures" *shows a picture of the man who does that for a living* I legit feel bad for Jirard, he HATED doing the Impossible Lair without bees lol
"The US Netflix line up is so much better than the UK" -European "The UK Netflix line up is so much better than the US" -American "Wait you have Netflix?" -Everyone else
Netflix is available in a lot of countries I mean I have family to Dominican Republic and they use my Netflix account with a good variety of stuff too is on there
I never even considered trying this game, but this review has given more thought towards it. Heck, I even went and bought the soundtrack on Bandcamp, and it's pretty good!
As someone who also really liked the first Yooka-Laylee, I love the Impossible Lair as well. Every point you made in this video is spot on, especially the soundtrack. The Soundtrack is extraordinary, but I honestly didn't expect anything less. My absolute favorite little thing in this game is this 80's Rock track when Pagie Power is activated along with the record scratch when it's over. Oh, and of course the bee puns, who doesn't enjoy them?
A Stereotypical Picture Of A French Man I loved his reaction to seeing the bee proposing to the mouse. X3 I didn’t know of the video he showed of him fanboying over the bees. Now I need to find it.
Indeed, there are also more people from the original snes trilogy involved in YL than the newer dkc games. You can also see it in the darker tone visual style in most of the levels just like the original DKC. I would go as far as saying that: "YL is more DKC than the new DKC games"
Super old comment, but I noticed that, too. Things he said about control being slippery and losing abilities when you lose your different Kong buddies don’t really apply to the SNES era games. I enjoyed Yooka Laylee myself, quite a bit, but I have never felt more control over a 2D platforming character than I did with Diddy Kong on the SNES.
It seems everytime you say "Donkey Kong Country" you mean "Donkey Kong Country Returns", since many aspects you mentioned that you dislike are absent in the original trilogy
I would say yes and no. I played classic DKC recently and he is right you have momentum and weight. However he isn't crippled without a companion like the new games.
Had to finally buy this game.. I wasn’t disappointed. Hours of fun, but can be frustratingly addictive. Controls are so tight and enjoyable to play. So satisfying when you find those twit coins as well as completing the level to free a bee. Such an underrated game, same as the first
i had NEVER EVEN HEARD of this game before. And, somehow, you convinced me to watch 30 minutes of platforming and bee puns... Dude, I love this channel, keep up the amazing work!!!
Jordanthehumanhedgehog It does, I instantly thought of that too! He was so happy~ I need to go and find that video he showed now. He loves bees so much~
That abrupt car crash of an ending to the "internet breaking in" skit was definitely unexpected, but refreshing. xD Sometimes you don't need to properly end a skit. Sometimes you just gotta throw it on the ground and say "looks done".
8:00 So the roll works like classic DKC? Seriously though, he is right when he says it feels better. Retro really never needed to change that to begin with. I guess they did it so DK’s momentum felt heavier, but part of the classic trilogy’s fun was that the roll could be used to plow through sections if you knew how to use it. And not just a matter of hoping you can keep your partner
"I Think It Would Have BEEn Much HUNNIer To Use That One, And Because You Didn't Use That, I Think There's SomeSTING Wrong With Your BUZZiness!!" I laughed so hard lol! 😂😂😂
11:44 Caddy : If you’ve done this without taking a single hit , I demand pictures *shows picture of Jirard after he uploaded a video on completing the impossible lair without the extra 48 hit points*
The 2 newcomers did an excellent job with the soundtrack by capturing the sound experience we had with David Wise and Grant Kirkhope in DKC and B&K while sound like their own! I loved this game! Great vid!
Playing this one way late but enjoying it immensely. Honestly agree that in least compared to DKC Tropical Freeze and Returns I personally enjoy this one quite more so far. DKC2 does have a really special place in my heart though.
I'm glad you covered how the controls differ from the DKC games. The other reviews I saw didn't really dig into that and that was my biggest concern with the game since DK feels like I'm trying to control a gorilla wearing a tie. Which is appropriate, but still.
Grant only did 5 songs on the soundtrack (The overworld music). The majority of the soundtrack is composed by Playtonic's in-house composers Matt Griffin and Dan Murdoch, with a few tracks done by David Wise.
@@Forstride Not to mention that all 5 of Grant's tracks are different versions of the same composition, so he technically only composed 1 piece of music for this game.
“Yooka Laylee & the Impossible Lair is better than the new Donkey Kong Country games” - Caddy, 2019 WoooWIE that’s a big claim! I might give it a shot for that alone! 😧
Just read the SCP where there was a journal where the author thought and considered everything as bees. Couldnt help but think of this seeing your old vine.
I dunno man, the fact that I'm Irish and that Caddy is English, I get SO many more of the references he makes, when compared to American youtubers. GOD that's fantastic.
Awesome video as always Caddy, only one gripe, when you compare it with DKC you mention the new ones as the whole franchise when in reality the original trilogy (excluding 64 because of how different that game is) is way closer of what you described in the video, for example the mecanic of keep rolling only when hitting enemies, the momentum and precision of the movement and the similarities in the mecanics when losing one of the two caracters (7:47 in the video). Apart from that great video, I will be looking forward on buying this game and try it myself :)
I am more of an OG-Yooka Laylee, Spyro-esque kind of 3D platformer lover, but I DO like Crash games, too, so I wonder if I'd like this. lol. Will probs try the first game first (after watching your vid on it, ofc), and then see! This was great! Love it! Thanks so much for this!
I got surprisingly good at playing this game with the tonics enabled that made it so that I was playing with the screen flipped upside down, with reverse controls, and with extra tough enemies. You'd be amazed at how easily your perceptive system can adapt to having things like control and visuals totally flipped and inverted and after a couple tries, you're playing just like nothing was different at all. Makes you feel like a total badass
Fun fact: David Wise, one of the great composers of this game, worked on Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2's music! That also explains why the music in this game is really good!
I also jumped to the ledge instead of blowing up the blocks in that cave Caddy mentioned, so I guess I'm a pro too. That's the mark of a good Metroidvania for me -- I like having to ask "Wait, was I supposed to be able to do that?" It was a nice surprise to have that from a platformer overworld!
The no bees challenge reminds me of the final level of 140. My brother did that level, after weeks of attempts. We cheered so loud and my brother legit cried like he'd become a father.
Honest truth, from what I've played of it thus far, I've gotten a very Rayman vibe--vibrant colours, excellent and appropriate music, exceptionally tight controls, levels that encourage and reward going quickly and using your abilities to navigate through areas, it's very reminiscent of Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins. Which is not a slag, those are *excellent* games and worth being compared to.
