In this video we will show you the 433 year’s old Bahar Wali Baoli step well which was constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar-e-Azam in the end of 16th century in 1591. Small rooms and chambers were constructed in this Baoli. Why rooms were constructed in this Baoli? This is an interesting story. Baoli is a Persian term which means a well with steps leading to the bottom to fetch water. Such wells were developed centuries ago along the main routes of army convoys and passengers on elephants, horses and other animals. It used to be a source of water consumption at a time when there was no means to pump it up to the ground level. Mostly Baolies were constructed in the era of Mughals Emperors and Sher Shah Suri throughout the Subcontinent. This is a very deep well the walls and stairs of well were constructed after trimming stones. This Baoli was divided into chambers and these were constructed from the level of water to top. This east Bahar Wali Baoli had been constructed in 1013 Hijri. This Baoli was constructed by Khan Habib Ullah Khan the Engineer of King Akbar. A Plaque was installed here which was removed and is later preserved in Lahore Museum. When Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun. Humayun was wandering in the jungles. When he found no place than he entered in the Pabbi of Kharian after crossed to river Jhelum and took shelter here. When he went from here he told that at that time he is not in a good position but he is an Emperor of Mughal family and defeat able. And if he became king or if his heirs came in power what can I help you? The people of Kharian said that we need water here is no water. We bring animals to drink water on the bank of river Jhelum which is a painful situation for us. You dig it up a well for us. Humayun wrote a note and gave them. He wrote that if my Government restore i will dug up a well and give you this gift. See the power of God the Humayun Government restored but he did not alive longer period. His son Akbar becomes king at the age of 13. Once he was passing from Gujrat incidentally. When he was passing from Kharian the people of Kharian found out that Emperor Akbar-e-Azam is passing from there and going to Kashmir because this was the only way to go to Kashmir the people of Kharian reached there. They showed him the note which was written by his father in which the Humayun promised that he will dig up a well in this area if his Government restores. When Akbar saw the note he recognized the writing of his father. Akbar said that you supported my father in difficult time one promise did my father with you. One well from my father and second well will be from my side. Similarly King Akbar approved to build 2 Baolies in Kharian. This is called east Baoli while another Baoli which was constructed by king Akbar this was situated in the center of the city and the name of this Baoli has been erased now. Now Alamgiri Mosque has been constructed here. There were piles of garbage in this Baoli till 2021. Local people threw garbage in it and had covered it completely. The Archaeology Department has restored the centuries-old Baoli step well in Kharian city at a cost of 10 Million rupees in 2021. This Baoli was cleaned and renovate by the Department of Archaeology and has restored it in its original shape. The excavation of the site had been done manually to avoid any damage to the original architecture. The depth of this well is 120 feet. The people who have interest in their history and love old civilization this is a special and attractive place for them. They should must visit to this place. It now has become a tourist place regular. This Baoli is situated approximately one kilometer from GT Road in Tehsil Kharian District Gujrat Province Punjab.
