Great video oldguyDIY. I'm a finish carpenter over here who minors in gunsmithing/mechanical work, and was going to do the hammer myself but maybe pay a gunsmith to do the extractor. I can definitely handle this though. Very clear and concise. Mine is a .22 LR i'm guessing it's the same procedure more or less? It was a great tip about using the clear tote. I have an old timber framed barn from the late 1800's that i use for my shop, and if i drop a screw into the floorboards that thing is gone forever i use magnetic trays to be safe. The tote is a genius trick though. Thanks for taking the time to make the video!
Remington uses way too much plastic in their firearms. No wonder their quality has nose dived. Remington is just running on their historical name now days. I have one of these rifles that has a problem with not feeding properly. So, it properly needs a hammer replacement as well. Thank you for preparing and sharing such an informative and interesting video.
Very good explanation and video. I had 2 597 remington and heard they had a recall. I called and they told me they were unsafe. So like a fool I sent them in and they sent me 2 marlin bolt action 22mag. I have absolutely lowest regards for remington. My Dad passed and he had 1 I recently took to the range and seem to remember he said CCI was the ammo to use. Anyway, I enjoyed your video.
The recall was for the .17HMR, NOT the .22LR. Im making sure to say this in case other people here think their .22LR is unsafe to use. The 597 .22LR is absolutely safe to use.
Followed your instructions and it went well ,the sterilite container saved my a$$ later in the refit. contribution to your video follows. The action to stock screws are 1/8 hex and the rear rail screws are 3/16 hex. The action screw torque seems to be 20 inch pounds with the stock plastic stock. My major heads up up is be very careful with the magazine interlock spring and arm, If this gets tweaked on re install the rifle will not cycle properly if at all. this is where the sterilite came in handy and saved my a$$
I would like to give one suggestion, Mcarbo hammer spring! I shaved 1 1/2lbs from my 597 22lr stock trigger. No more creep or grit with a nice clean break! My next step is the Volquartsen hammer!
Just a comment. I had this gun in 17HMR. Then got the recall. Remington gave me a choice of I think it was $200 refund or change out barrel to 22LR or 22WMR. I chose 22WMR. I've only fired it once since the 22WMR barrel was installed and it has trouble on the last round not getting scooped up from the magazine. Not your classic FTF since there was no jambing. How does the new hammer improve things? Looks the same.
I don't know why the new hammer is better. I replaced it since the hammer came with the extractor. If your gun shoots fine other than the last round, I would verify magazine insertion and spring strength. It sounds to me like a magazine issue rather than a gun issue. Thank you for commenting.
Question! I have a 597 but not in 22 magnum just in 22LR. Will this extractor work the same for 22LR? DUMB question I know just second guessing my self lol. Needed a new extractor since 2006ish? 😂
Nice explanation. I bought the same hammer & extractor but didn’t replace the extractor because I wasn’t having issues with extraction. The hammer made a very nice improvement, however, after I got through a 50rd box I started to experience my trigger would lock up like it was on safety. I then ejected the live round then fire more then sporadically, it would lock up again. Have you ever experienced this? This is weird. Also I noticed mine doesn’t have the double spring around the guide rods. It only has a single spring. Did Remington change this design or possibly the guy who had it before removed one?
Thank you. No, I have never had the issue you describe. I suggest checking the 597 schematic on the Brownells or GunPartsCorp website to see if there should be one spring or two. I suspect the previous owner may have lost rather than knowingly removed one.
@@northdakotakid8787 No problem . Getting the ejector and hammer in a few days so i'm gonna be doing the same sh$t. Also have a .22lr and took it apart a few times to clean thats why i noticed the 2 springs right away and went back and seen magnum on the frame because i was wondering the same thing.
They are super picky on ammo CCI or Hornady only if you want them to run generally. If its dirty it wont run and putting those springs back in is a royal bitch so cleaning sucks.
