I am in NC and 77 years old...i like to play this when day is done and i am on the porch with a jack n ginger highball...and yes it always clears out my eyes
So you tear up and feel proud to be an American when you hear a song representing a bunch of traitors who violently took up arms against the U.S.? Does "God Save the Queen" make you nostalgic for King George and the colonies?
@@gregroberts5303 Not the same, It doesn’t just represent the CSA. Dixie represents Southern spirit and pride. Dixie is a song that represents unity in our part of America.
@@Yappit Yeah I bet the black people in your part of America just love a song that celebrates a time and place where their ancestors were chained, beaten, lynched, raped, bought and sold. I can see why you’re so proud of your heritage.
@@imperialbricks1977 What does "fueling abolitionist activity" mean? It almost seems like you're saying the pre-war south was a hotbed of abolitionist activity, but that's clearly false and ridiculous so I assume you must've meant something else.
I'm from Mississippi. I grew up in Oxford. For me Dixie is about love. Yes there were and are racial issues just like every other part of the USA. It's a state of many very very poor people, white and black, and a few very very rich people mostly white. I sing Dixie to remember the good things. Sunday picnics after church. The Easter Egg Hunt in the Grove, my personal favorite memory. Sitting on the lawn in front of shotgun houses and old trailers. Catching fireflies with the neighbor kids after playing capture the flag. Summer afternoons so hot and steamy the ice melts in your drink before you can get to the outside door. The acre size garden we shared with the others on our circle. We tell stories and pass on memories of those who are gone. They aren't memories of Klan meetings either. They are hunting and fishing stories, Christmases where there was barely any money for gifts but someone came by with homemade muscadine wine and a red wax covered wheel of sharp cheese made at Miss State. A preacher who lived to be 96. He had a ton of preachers in his family stretching all the way back to circuit riders. They served nearly every town in the state. Stories like that need to be told and a way of life that needs to be remembered. We help our neighbors white and black. We show respect to our elders. We hold on to family values and tradition. We love the land and respect nature. It's not romanticizing a time when blacks were treated horribly. It's ridiculous that people are being taught that nothing good ever came out of this state. There are more famous people, white and black, per capita from here than anywhere else in the world. I'm PROUD of being called the Hospitality State. We are trying to remember all the many good decent people and the state we love. So many cover the good in this state with the bad and then say, "at least I'm not from there". I just tell them in my slow southern drawl "Old times here are not forgotten".
Cap America you are pure trash. In stark contrast to the beautiful sentiment expressed by the above poster your comment is a testament to your bigotry.
Elizabeth Lewis I’m right there with you. Keep the heritage and traditions alive because we are getting scrutinized very hard right now because no one knows what a true southerner is.
People need to get over it. Abraham Lincoln asked for "Dixie" to be played at the end of the war, so why should we be denied this wonderful melody. Grow up America.
It has only gotten worse. I’m in my last year at Ole Miss as of the spring, and I work in politics. This is the best song any band has ever played. The Republican Party is the party of the people. Let’s bring Dixie back soon
I miss this song so damn much... i swear every time i hear it I cry... what in the hell did my generation do to deserve having our heritage and love of our home trampled on. Dammit, Dixie belongs to all us.
I'm a lifelong Bama fan and in 2004 I watched them play Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa. Before the game the Ole Miss Band played this and the entire stadium cheer wildly after they were done. An absolute shame if it's true they can't play this anymore.
It is a shame the band was asked to no longer perform this song. This is a medley that contains both Dixie and The Battle Hymn of the Republic, songs representative during the Civil War of the South and the North respectively. The band's arrangement is an adaptation of the original arrangement done by Mississippi native, Bill McElhiney, for Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass back in the very late 1960's or very early 1970's. You can find their recording of the song on their 1972 album, Live in Person! Danny Davis used this as the encore number in Nashville Brass concerts all over the world for at least 36 years. RIght up to their last two public performances in 2005. It was a favorite of Nashville Brass fans around the globe. The idea behind this song was to unite people, not divide them. So sad.
Well, why not get some students and some fans to stop inserting the Klan version "The South Will Rise Again" in the chorus? Even now the new and latest version has had to eliminate that part of the song to prevent it from happening. What an absolute shame that a few would corrupt such a moving song!
As a Gamecock that lives in NC, this has to be brought back to Ole Miss. SEC Football is tradition, the South is tradition. This song is nothing short of spectacular, neck hair raising to say the least. I would love nothing more in this world to see your band fire this one back up. Bring back Col. Reb and Dixie! We all miss and love em!
Are you INSANE? Col Reb was BURIED in 2003. Though you didn't mention it, I can only surmise that you'd be in favor of bringing bk the Confederate Flag. The Confederate Flag (long utilized by that ultra - hateful group, the KKK), btw, was BANNED from ALL OM Athletic events bk in 1996. Those racist symbols, Col Reb & esp the KKK Flag, only made it 100X's harder for Ole Miss to recruit (elite) student athletes to Ole Miss -- many of them being black. Of course, you would wish for Ole Miss to still utilize Confederate symbols b/c it sure doesn't HURT your Roosters/Cocks. Well, thankfully, my beloved Alma Mater FINALLY decided to CEASE carrying that 'torch'. PRAISE JESUS!!! & HOTTY TODDY!!!
It still hurts me everyday that this is gone forever and will soon be forgotten. The grove will never be the same to me without it. It truly is a crying shame.
@@Dom_510 You know when you really make an ass of yourself? When you tell a firefighter to go burn down businesses. You know nothing about me yet you wont even tackle the topic at hand, the deep rooted racism that fuel secession.
@@zoeya2955 there is no deep rooted racism. Now go with your other democrats and go destroy more small businesses. It’s all you guys know. Well that and being Marxist morons
There is no need for boycotts, no need for confrontation, no need for petitions. All that is required are a few courageous band members, including alumni band members, Ole Miss supporters who can play an instrument, and any other musician with a backbone to gather together, and play "Dixie" on or adjacent to campus. Do it either well-planned in advance, or as a "flash mob band", but do it right and do it often and do it with pride!
@@SigmaBetaClub I NEVER uttered that statement. That was begun by & led by some arrogant, self - absorbed students. But, the song ITSELF, "From Dixie with Love" is timeless & shld be once again included within the repertoire of songs played by The "Pride of the South" marching band.
My highschool band plays this song at the end of every football game. We are the Franklin County Rebels and we have the rebel man and the song with it.
It's a tough loss and has taken a decade to see how the enemies weapons of identity politics, political correctness and cancel culture have gutted our freedom of speech, beliefs and pride. We can't keep letting our values be trampled while we politely bend to pressure playing against our peaceful nature! Remember honor, strength and unity, proud heritage!
I graduated from the University of Mississippi, in 1968, a proud Rebel, Whistling Dixie and proud of my Southern Heritage. The Mississippi Family is bigger than the current student body. Government Educated since kindergarden they don't always make the right decisions. I am a Constitutionalist and believe our State should be controlled by Mississippians, not the Federal Cartel in the District of Corruption.
Somebody told me some years ago he was on the Ole Miss campus (after the ban) and he heard "Dixie" playing somewhere in a small woods. He went there to see more. He found a collection of people who had formed an impromptu band -- and most of them were black ...
Thank You. We need to stand up for our Southern Heritage. Everybody can claim their heritage, except Southerners, Southerners are both black and white. I will play Dixie to the day I die, and I have taught my children and grandchildren to be PROUD of our heritage. We never nationalized, we federalized, the federal government is working to eliminate state sovereignty and create a strong central government that Mississippi never ratified.
Bring it back and we love the song and all of the people that voted it off and cornel reb needs to come back too. All I have to say is bring it back and HOTTY TODDY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hog fan here and although we want to stomp a mudhole on Ole Miss on the football field...as soon as the game is over, the above takes precedence in who we (ALL) are as a people and our way of life will NEVER DIE !
I'm from Indiana. I don't know why this song makes me tear up. It's so beautiful it's magical. It's too bad I will never get the chance to hear this live. Sad.
I live about 30 mins away from Ole Miss. I think the State of Mississippi should take a vote on this instead a couple of people gettin to decide on this song bein taken away!
So sad they don’t play this anymore. I’m glad I got to experience in person but I was too young to fully appreciate it. Now if I have kids, they won’t ever get to experience this
Having pride in one's heritage and pride in a people being willing to be rebels when they feel they're being wronged is NOT racist. Radical people who just want to start a fight are making it about racism. The rebel flag and the song Dixie are favorites of people who've never stepped foot south of the Mason Dixon, and it has nothing to do with black people, past or present.
I will never forgive them for tearing down Confederate monuments and I blame nicki haley for giving rise to the anti southern movement....my heart will always belong to Dixie.
lol people its just a song damn.. I AM BLACK AND I LIVE IN THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA that song has never stopped me from doing anything... its funny to see how upset folks get over a song and please read your history books so u would know y its being played the land of dixie so they say.... and i don't like ole miss at all but damn its a song if they want to play dixie dammit play it till the last person standing pass out..........
Is it now time to Fire the Chancellor of Ole Miss and put in his place a man who will the uphold Bands right to play " Dixie " . With pressure from Ole Miss Alum and students the Chancellor can be replaced . God Bless the long held Traditions of Ole Miss God Save The South and God Bless America , still the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave .
Next thing you know the LSU Tigers will have the change their mascot because.. heaven forbid, that was their regiment name in the American Civil War (Louisiana Tigers). Notre Dame will have to change their name to "The Irish". One of these days Ole Miss will get a great coach who will make this tradition returning one of his demands.
I no longer have any respect anymore for the Federal government nor the leadership of this nation. I tip my hat to the Ole Miss band and say..THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN! Go Dawgs!
I'm sorry, Ashal008, I'm black and I love this song (and I'm not even from Mississippi). Shame I won't get to hear it when my Aggies travel to Oxford. Damn shame.
I was there live and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I went to the next home game as well... it just wasn't the same... Some of the students were flat out pissed and took out some of their anger on the band as if it was their fault they didn't get to play it anymore. It just about broke my heart.
I recently realized UK Band no longer plays Dixie. This is a disgrace. When I was a Student it was often played twice in a game. I wish the student body would start whistling Dixie at every game.
Ole Miss didn't take down the state flag or ban dixie. The University of Mississippi took down OUR flag and banned dixie. I'm a lifelong Mississippian and die hard Ole Miss fan and I stand with Ole Miss and not the University of Mississippi
the it quite possibly, the sickest video, of all time for pre-game for real Reb fans, Fins Up, from the most loyal and knowledgeable Rebel in Georgia... GOOSEBUMPS, attack the Cajuns
@TheBunkis.... awww, bless your heart. Is that the best you could come up with? I do hope you feel better now that you got that out of your system. BTW since you seem to be in the loop of knowing so much of the klans business (ie. meeting times- since you were so worried we would be late to a meeting, where they are- since you say we can carpool, etc.) just how long have YOU been a member? :)
Mr. Cliff Mitchell - I have never been to your state, although although I do believe that I may have played against MSU somewhere along the line, and been temporary friends with some of the "Bulldogs". As a black man, I never saw selections such as "We Shall Overcome" or Lift Every Voice And Sing' as rallying cries against white people. From another part of the country altogether, I do not even know the words to "Dixie" even if I do kind of recognize the melody. Black people from the South may have an entirely different memory of the context of that song.
dont worry guys i bet someone is going to stand up for this horrible thing that there doing to ole miss i WAS a kentucky fan for almost my whole life because i live there but ive learn to LOVE Ole Miss i bet they will be playing from dixie with love once again one day
I am not an Ole Miss Rebel Fan. I am a MSU fan. I will stand for Dixie at all cost. Why is is ok for blacks to sing "We Shall Overcome" but not ok for anyone to sing or play Dixie? Why is it ok to fly the Mexican flag but not the Confederate Flag? What this comes down to is reverse discrimination. Leave this state with it's heritage. Move on and quit finding a platform on others lives.
@@Kevrey I was born and raised in Oxford. I earned my undergraduate and doctorate degrees at Ole Miss. I think Cliff is an idiot who should be embarrassed to post such a stupid comment.
I think this was the turning point for me and Ole Miss with all this "politically correct" crap. It truly broke my heart to take this away..this was my all time FAVORITE Ole Miss song and a true reflection on growing up in Mississippi. I have found myself sort of "withdrawing" from the school because it truly makes me sad to stand back and watch a lot of history and tradition slowly being taken away....
@rebelman1841 I have withdrawn from the school, too. I find myself pulling for Ole Miss to get beat now. I hope nobody shows up the the games. I hope crickets chirp in the grove on Saturdays...until they realize that we have a right to publicly honor our forefathers. Southern people need at least one college where they can publicly honor their forefathers.
glad weve got this song back. seems to me that since they just officially locked colonel rebels image up that they traded that for this tune. theyve played it the last two homes games. LONG LIVE DIXIE AND OLE MISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@hhscatfish05 A man's wife used to be referred to as his mistress, but that now carries a completely different connotation. Originally, Miss was used to mean an upper class woman, while Mrs. was used to refer to the lower class. (By the way these terms originated during the colonial times in New England, not in the South). Moving forward, a plantation owner's mistress (or wife) would then be shortened to Miss. Some people's ignorance is very telling.
@TheBunkis , What makes this so bad is northerners don't know the Sherman on his fiery march through Tennessee and especially Georgia burned almost everything then what they done to Columbia SC and parts of NC.I am from Georgia but this makes me mad that Ole Miss had to change all that you stated. When I was little I thought the south would never rise again, but with the current political climate I like most southerners would welcome it.
