OLIVER 88 Sandblasting- Small Talk With The Missus and Counterweight

Today we fire up the Oliver Super 88 for a little pto duty on the homebuilt sandblaster...affectionately known to the family as Frankenblaster. The newly assembled counterweight for the Kubota MX5400 is completed and in dire need of preparation for a coat of black Rustoleum. There is really a lot to take in during the longer video, from the 1950's Oliver power unit to the actual work to clear the paint from the Baker counterweight and then finally the application of the new coat of Rustoleum. The Missus, of course, gets the opportunity to provide her unique look at the situation and for the last half of the video we engage in small talk about ...well, I don't really know if there's a topic, but we fill the time with conversation while simultaneously bringing another discarded piece of scrap into something useful. #tractor, #diy, #salvage

I've been using that sandblaster for many years now. I destroyed the original two stage much smaller compressor and about 20 years ago changed it to this monster that my older brother had in storage at his shop. The Super 88 and the Massey Harris 55 are the two best tractors to power it with. The MH 44's overheat when its really hot outside, but do ok in cold weather. The Missus might paint some daffodils on that nice black counterweight after all. LOL

Speaking of paint fumes I spent a lot of time around paint lines and painters but never had any problems with fumes because the exhaust systems were huge. The only time I noticed anything was running PVC piping on a wash line at Borg Warner. It had fiberglass tanks and Jerry Coplin and I were down in a 3 x 6 x 5 foot deep tank putting in bulkhead fittings. We mixed up the resin and were sealing up the connections with some glass mat. After about 15 minutes we were laughing and having a good old time. Didn't really notice how many fumes were in the tank until I stood up and my head was out the top. Fortunately the job was a quick one and we weren't in the tank too long Climbing the step ladder was a bit shaky and we sat in the breakroom airing out for a while before we went back to work. That was before OSHA came up with confined spaces regulations. A very real danger that I use to teach the hazards of when I was in charge of the Safety Committee.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 месяца назад
I had to chuckle reading about your slight inebriation from the fumes. Some of the OSHA regs are definitely a good thing. Confined spaces create a hazard to your health !! Those huge exhaust systems are some of the things I fabricated and installed ...that's the 'V' in HVAC. LOL. I've done a ton of them from commercial kitchen to commercial factory and industrial ventilation on massive machinery. I built a semicircular hood that was 13' in diameter at the GE plant in St Louis. It was a sealed varnish tank where they'd immerse locomotive drive motor components in and draw it into a vacuum to seal the windings in the insulation covering prior to assembly. They called it a varnish tank, but I don't know what it was. But when the vacuum seal was broken, the resultant fumes had to be vented through large spiral ducting out the roof through a massive exhaust fan. That one was the largest I've built and installed. Others I made out of stainless steel for kitchens and others just 10 gage mile steel all welded. Btw, I fabbed the 13' semicircle hood on an 8' brake. LOL. Not an easy job at all. I'm glad that's all in the past now but it was fun (for the most part) when I was doing it.

Clarence I figured the cfm one time and it was crazy. It'll take an 80 gallon tank from zero to 100 psi in around a minute. I have the unloader set to maintain 125 psi during use. During the video you can hear it loading and unloading. It's all built from scrap pieces. And yes, the counterweight is going to help with the loader a LOT !!

Wendell, I had a similar problem when a cow mashed my hand in the headgate, with my right hand. Its miserable. When we painted the gravity wagons, we used rustoleum turbo black, and Wow that is some great stuff. It covers a wider area and seems to be a really durable coating. Plus, it goes on quicker and easier on the wrist/hand. Great Vid.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 месяца назад
That must have been aggravating to get it back in shape. I know mine is. It fatigues very quickly. Rustoeum Turbo black...?? I haven't seen that on the shelf before. I found an industrial black at the local paint store that is surprisingly durable. That's what I sprayed the 21' bar joist trailer frame I made for the sawmill with. The container even had Industrial Use Only on the directions. No thinning...shake, dump in the cup and pull the trigger. I'll look for the Turboblack next time.

You Dear Lady is correct on wanting some fresh air around when you were painting that, Lord Harry, I could smell that paint up here in my living room, too. Maybe add power steering to the 88. It won't help with the turning radius, but will make it steer a lot easier. Didn't they make 88s with power steering from the factory as an option? I do like that sand blaster. Nice.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 месяца назад
I'm thinking that steering gear is the rear steering from an old combine or something. But I literally HATE it on there. If I put the 77 narrow front and 16'' tri rib, it ought to turn easier AND tighter. I hope. This is about a 1952 Super 88 so I'd think power steering might have been an option. It'd be different with a factory wide front though.

Having a camera person is a big benefit. Having such a nice conversation during the workday is a big improvement to the story too. You two are a natural pair for RU-vid. I'd subscribe if I hadn't already. 👩‍🦳👴 $10.00 worth of paint adds $200.00 to the price of the tractor. 😁😎 Having a sandblaster is a near necessity in the old tractor business. I have a HF tank blaster that I have used a dozen times for anything from blasting wheels to blasting the sandstone bricks on the front of the house. I like your hood much better than mine. The air supplied jobs are much better than the canvas hood with a hardhat inside that came with my blaster. The Frankenblaster has the advantage of a big compressor driving it. My air compressor is big enough to run the blaster but it has to run all the time to keep up. I have two of those rattle can handles. I used the old one for years and it fit everything. Then someone did a New & Improved on the nozzles and I had to buy a new one. They are handy. The spot where they were stored is getting moved to the new shop as time and inclination allow. The handles aren't lost they are just out of easy reach. So I get along without them for now. Amazing how nice the counterweight looks. Black is one of those paint colors that just makes things look good. Loved my black Firebird. 😁😎
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 месяца назад
Firebirds were meant to be black I think. This compressor is definitely capable of keeping up. You can hear it going into and out of 'load'. I have it down around 115 to 120 psi because the smaller tractors cannot handle it. The Oliver does a great job though and hardly changes its tune at any pressure. I don't know why manufacturers continually change things that work good. I think its just to make us spend more money. I didn't have a problem with the old spray nozzles at all. I had an old HF helmet and canvas poncho, but it sweats up rapidly whether its hot or cold outside. This Clemco is a great addition and the regulated air sent to it is through a dual element charcoal filter for purification. In the summer, it literally feels like air conditioning inside even at 100* ambient. Its awesome.
