Looking for a job, maintaining friendships, the covid pandemic, planning a big party, making get together plans, surgery or illness recovery, transportation plans and getting a place to live all in a nutshell.
I never cried watching this scene as a kid but now as an adult, I cry every single time. It's so beautifully sad, Oliver getting left behind and trying to live on his own.
I’ve lived in NYC for 16 years and have recently been re-examining my love affair with the city. “How can anyone stay starry-eyed when it’s raining cats and dogs outside and the rain is saying ‘Now you’re on your own.’” That’s gut-wrenchingly poignant and so relatable.
The two biggest reasons why this film was so overlooked: 1. It came out at the end of Disney’s Bronze Age, right before the Renaissance. 2. It came out the same weekend as The Land Before Time.
Depends who you’re talking to. Quite a lot of people consider Great Mouse Detective (1986) to be the start of the Disney Renaissance; whole other’s believe Little Mermaid (1989) to be the start. There’s a documentary on Disney+ about the Renaissance - Waking Sleeping Beauty - which includes Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company as part of the Renaissance period
@@OchoAndOrtizDisneyPod Oooh GMD is underrated too! saw GMD when it first came out in 86 3 times in St Louis when i was 4 and had a readalong! i even saw the 92 re-issue 2 times when i was turning 10. I also saw both Land before time (First time to that was on a field trip[)and Oliver 3 times each in theaters even Oliver for the third time on New Year's day 1989 in omaha when i was 6 and had merchandise to both. Oliver made lots of money in theaters and a surprise hit! but too bad it never had a video release for 8 years until 1996. I even saw Roger about 3 times in theaters in 88 even Bambi 88 re-issue 2 times, Fox and Hound 88 re-issue 2 times as well. I even saw Rescuers 3 times in it's 89 re-issue at age 7 even Peter Pan 2 times and Little Mermaid 2 times. I'm definitely an 80s/early 90s kid who have fond memories of those movies
Because, the dream is dying, and inside of us we know it. Plus, when you look back at this kind of stuff, the stuff you grew up with, and realize its mostly forgotten now, you want to cry. Because it feels like a piece of you is forgotten along with it.
I hadn't seen this film in 20 years, and I watched it with Disney+ come out... and I cried for 5 minutes straight. 42 year old man here, for the record. Cried like a kitten stuck in a box while its raining. :)
This song didn't make me cry as a kid. It does every time as an adult for two reasons: 1) The prominence of the Twin Towers, and 2) I saved a kitten just like Jenny saved Oliver 11 years ago. That same kitten is now relaxing on my couch, not a care in the world.
I think there are many touching moments from films during our childhoods that don’t make us cry when we see them as kids but do when we’re adults. 🤷♀️ I think it’s because we understand their significance much more as adults.
2:25 my favorite part _“so Oliver don’t be scared, though yesterday no one cared. They’re getting your place prepared, where you wanna be”_ those lyrics are beautiful
It sounds like a song that deserves to be played on top 40 because it was never released as a radio or physical single. It is one of the underrated Disney opening songs ever.
Fun fact: Howard Ashman is the lyricist on Disney’s versions of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin but his very first assignment from Disney was to write the lyrics for this song!
It's interesting how differently you interpret things from when you're a kid to an adult. God I love this movie still though. It was the first movie I watched on Disney+ I feel like it's so underrated and underappreciated when it comes to Disney movies
Jake from RU-vid I saw it on Disney plus too yesterday. And there was another movie ive never heard of before it was the sequel of lady and tramp like I didn’t know it existed until a month ago. Like ever since I was a kid I only watched the first one
“Keep your dream alive dreamin is still how the strong survive” - was just a beautiful line in a song as a child now it’s reality!! Time is something else....
It's amazing how songs hit so differently when you're an adult. Watching this as a kid, I just liked the melody and I didn't understand the lyrics. Now, I understand them, and it just HITS me, y'know??
All too well. I'll admit that I never saw this movie until a few months ago for the first time, and I lost all emotional control. I cried so hard that I felt like a new man the next day, and since then, I've been listening to Disney songs I was familiar with and I can't help but wonder why I didn't cry the first time I heard them.
Could never watch the beginning of this without crying for that kitten. It would hurt me so much because I know people are really like this in real life. Would ignore a sad kitten, and just keep on walking.
I want to watch it again too cause when I watched it for the first time on Disney plus I was touched by the song that came on at the beginning and Oliver being left all alone in the rain. It makes me want to save any animal that is injured or lonely without a friend 😊
I always come to this song for inspiration. All my high school years I dreamt of going to college in NYC. I can’t explain the feeling of opening my acceptance letter to my first choice school’s animation program. My years in NYC were the best years of my life (so far). Whenever I listen to this song, I remember the pride I felt after braving the city and flourishing in it, and eventually walking across that stage with my diploma. New York, how I miss you. You were very good to me!
This song takes me back to a time before worrying about bills. Before 40+ hour work weeks. Before being so far away from my parents. Back to a time when I could spend all day dreaming.
two years ago i got my kitten and i knew his name would be Oliver. From the first day i got him i sang him this song. Even when he was tiny he always seemed fascinated when i sang it to him. Today i sang it to him again and he looked at me and began meowing along to it. This will always be our special song
this was my favorite movie as a kid I would watch it over and over again cause it never got old. I wish I could find this movie again and watch it for nostalgia.
This song is my life song. It tells everything I believe in, and even more than that. I love New York New York, and this song is full of truth. Don't be shy, let go and try, and be the guy they're dying to see. I probably will never hear a song as good as this one, and that goes for the movie, too. "Keep your dream alive, dreaming is still how the strong survive." This is one of my favorite lines. The song is too good for words or even emotions!!
As a kid, I was spoiled. I had this vhs, my sister and I would watch it all the time. I didn’t understand how much it would mean to me years later. We were kids that had some cool parents. Because they showed us Hughie Lewis way before this film was a thing. Anyway, I keep coming back because it says so much about us. I often wish we were kids for a moment. Just so we could see everything again.

One of Huey Lewis's best songs for this movie. It should've been on the greatest hits album. Poor Oliver was helpless and had to find some way to survive.
Unfortunately he didn’t write it and therefore didn’t have the rights to it, which is why it’s not on his greatest hits albums. Same thing with Why Should I Worry.... Billy Joel sang it for the film, but he didn’t write it
@@OchoAndOrtizDisneyPod Many of Huey's hits weren't written by him, or anyone in the band though, right? Heart And Soul, Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do, Doing It All For My Baby, Do You Believe In Love, Jacob's Ladder, Perfect World among others, were all written by outsiders, yet were on their greatest hits albums. Including his duet with Gwyneth Paltrow on Duets. They did a fine cover of the Smokey Robinson classic 'Cruisin' and it did appear on their 2006 Greatest Hits album. I adore this song myself though.
This song hits something deep within me, to the point where I cry uncontrollably. I don’t recall crying to this as a child, but it does as an adult. I think because I look back at my childhood and really relate to Oliver. I think we have all been where Oliver was: young, wishful, and hopeful, just to have life be harsh and critical. This song brings back those thoughts and feelings I had as a kid, and making me really wish I had them back, but they got lost to life. And at the same time, the song encourages me to keep going and to keep those dreams alive. “Dreamin’ is still how the strong survive.” Thank you to everyone who help create and protect this song.

I saw this from my childhood, and this song put me in tears when no one wanted to adopt the little kitten, I felt bad for him, and this movie, and soundtrack sure does bring me back memories like the old days. This movie was my favorite since I was kid (sighs) sure does bring me memories I still love this even though i'm 22 years old.
I too have a deep connection to my childhood regarding this movie, as well as many more such as All Dogs Go To Heaven and Homeward Bound series. Much love to all the people behind the Oliver and Company production and the fans!
In the Beggining of Oliver and Company (Disney), the opening song talks about how life can be rough in New York City. In the Beggining of The Secret Life of Pets (Illumination), the opening song talks about New York City being a happy place. By the way, I love Oliver and Company. Better than Secret life of Pets.
The Awesone Bat Yeah, Oliver and Company is way more honest about its portrayal of NYC, how it's a rough and gritty place. The Secret Life Of Pets makes it looks like it's some kind of beautiful paradise, and as someone who lives close to NYC, I guarantee you it's definitely not a paradise.
I believe that this was the first movie i ever saw in my life, and the line "Now youre on your way, to a once upon a time that never ends" is still one of my favorites
Quite an inspirational song, I always feel like I can go out there and do anything I put my mind to. The lyrics are wonderful and I just love the melody. Beautiful. I always get excited whenever I hear the horns at the beginning.
This movie is a part of my childhood, even though I wasn’t a kid in the 80s my sister (who is a big Disney fanatic) showed this movie to me and my family and fell in love with it ever since! Love this song, thank u and love u sis!
As a 26 year old Male, I tear up every time i hear this song. In my opinion, one of, if not the best disney songs EVER!! Harmony and vocals match up perfectly!!
Classic Huey. He always got a lot of flak for his vocals (he and The News struggled to get a contract early on because apparently he 'couldn't sing at all'), despite having one of the most unique and powerfully voices ever. Blue-eyed soul at its finest.
I love Oliver & Company so much I wish Disney would re-release the soundtrack cuz it came out a year before I was born and I absolutely love this movie
I used to watch this movie with and sing the songs to my cat, who passed a few years back, and many years too soon. This song along with the Jenny number are so heart wrenching for me to hear again, but... It makes me feel like my best buddy is here again. We grew up together for 11 years, and he should still actually be here, but.. our neighbor's car had other plans, apparently.. Miss you, buddy.. We'll always be good company.
You'll be together again one day. The Sovereign LORD and Master Creator of the Universe also loves the animals He put onto this world and blessed them before He even made mankind! Take heart; The God of Love is compassionate and filled with mercy.
@@FFXI_Addict thanks, but I'm an atheist, and I have no reason to believe in a god. Pleaaase don't push stuff that onto me, hun! I know he's gone forever, and i have to accept it.. it hurts, but.. it's life
Oh my gosh I love this movie! I was born in 1987 so I didn't see it till I got the VHS in 1996, but it became one of my fave Disney movies ever. Finally bought it on Blu-Ray last year (one of the 1st movies I ever owned on Blu-Ray) and it was so great to watch it again. This song always makes me want to cry and adopt a kitten :(
why is this song making me sob??? I used to listen to this movie's soundtrack so much as a child, I think it manifested me to move across country to NYC as an adult. Been here 12 years now (with three kitties!)
I had a bad day today and i have never seen this movie, except through commercials from other Disney movies. So I thought I'd check something different on Disney+ and I cannot believe how hard I cried at this opening. 😭😭😭😭I hope that things get turned around soon. Idk if I can take anymore 😭😭😭😭
20 people have no heart. GREAT opening. One of Disney's best post-Walt animated films, and came out at the beginning of their second golden age in animation.
Especially the lines "If they pick you out, you're on your way to a 'once upon a time' that never ends" and "'Cause a dream's no crime". Just in case the rest of this song doesn't give me chills, at least THOSE lines do.
I was born in 1984. Now for me the 90's held most of my childhood memories as the first 5 years of my life is fuzzy or lost. However this movie is the very first movie I can hazily recall seeing in the theaters. I don't know if it was my first cinema and disney movie I ever saw but it's the one I can recall that i saw. The late 80's stuff I can recall: This movie, The Little Mermaid, a soundtrack from Walt Disney World Resort called "The Music of Disneyland, Walt Disney World and EPCOT Center", and the beginnings of the wonderful "The Disney Afternoon" block and Disney Adventures Magazine and comics.
This song is one of my favorites I can listen to this over and over and I will never get tired of it. I grew up watching Oliver and company it's a classic!
Same here. When I was younger I had a stuffed cat rattle and named it after Oliver (because I loved the movie and it had the same fur color as the protagonist of the film).
Great song!! It got stuck in my head as a kid. I then watched the credits as a teenager and was so thrilled to see that Howard Ashman wrote this song! You can really tell this movie paved the way for the comeback of the animated musical. It’s a great soundtrack!
I always wanted to see this movie as a child but never got a chance too but hey 39 years later . I finally got to see it and as they say better late then never . Great movie and song i love the nostalgia vibes I get hearing this song !
I just turned 37 and i remembered 31 years ago, i was 6 when i saw this movie in theaters 3 times when i lived in Omaha even after New Years day and dug the movie and i had merchandise like 2 shirts, PJs, the CD soundtrack (my first CD and got it for Christmas that year), Mcdonald toys, Mcdonald ornuments, coloring books, junior novel, plush Oliver and all that. I remembered feeling disappointed it never came out on video for years as i wanted it the next year on video but i also saw the re-issue in theaters in middle school and remembered my friends who also remembered seeing the movie when it first came out too as they too were pissed it never hit video and got the VHS for christmas when it came out and now have it on blu-ray as i enjoy it for the nostalgia. I also remembered seeing Great Mouse Detective when it originally came out when i was 4 when i lived in St Louis 3 times and also saw the re-issues of classic Disney animated films even 1987'ss re-issues of Aristocats to Fox and the Hound 88 re-issue, i even saw Roger Rabbit in theaters in Omaha and also saw Rescuers 89 re-issue and Little Mermaid 2 times when i was 7 plus had Mcdonald toys. Yet Black Cauldron was the first movie i saw in theaters at age 3. One of my favorite Disney animated movies and still enjoy it as an adult as i got it on blu-ray, i can't wait to meet Joey Lawrence in person at the Santa Fe Comic Con this october and get his autograph on my Oliver blu and a photo with him.
This song always gives me goosebumps because it takes me back to my childhood when my granny would babysit me. It’s like I get to travel back in time for a moment.
The first lyrics Howard Ashman wrote for Disney. From here he would bring in Alan Menken to work on Little Mermaid. He also pitched Aladdin as an animated musical asr well as some of it's songs before being brought in with Alan to rescue the floundering non musical production of Beauty and the Beast...
For pitching Aladdin as an animated musical, it is sad to know he didn't see it come to fruition, much like Walt himself didn't see the end product of "The Jungle Book." I know, as on the end credits of "Beauty and the Beast" (at least my special edition copy, not sure if it was on the original VHS release) "To the man who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful." - Howard Ashman, 1950 - 1991.
