As for her ancestors, apart from a rumour that there was a Frenchwoman somewhere in her family tree, Olivia thinks they are largely from Norfolk, so she is astonished to discover that she needs to travel to India to find out more about her great-great-great-grandmother Harriot.
Olivia finds records that reveal Harriot was an orphan in 1811 on a ship bound for England from (then) Calcutta. Harriot's father was an Englishman, but the identity of her mother, who gave birth to her in a remote Indian village, is a mystery Olivia delights in solving.

The bit when she reads the french woman's letter - about her mother's death and people saying goodbye - is so beautiful. I'd be thrilled to read my ancestors' diary and/or letters. It's just so good to discover the life that people led, what they felt and thought back in a regular tuesday afternoon 90 years ago, when they sat to write somebody a letter. Makes you think about time.

The British East India company must have maintained only records of mostly British residents in India during the East India company rule. From the 1857 onwards, when India was directly absorbed into the British Empire, records of Indians were also recorded. But it is hard to find records of many Indians prior to that. Natively, Indians never maintained records of their own people. I believe there was no such records of Indian census taken before probably because India was being ruled by different empires and small kingdoms. They may not have taken such effort to store records of their people.

Not really, all our English teachers at school have a similar accent. This accent is common around places where the British were concentrated around during the Raj. Places such as Bombay, Calcutta and some other lesser known places like my home town Mangalore.

Bengali is a really beautiful language, it's really soothing to listen the language. So people in west bengal develop a really good English accent

@@joyid That's such a stupid logic. Bengal was under the British rule for maximum time and benefitted with Calcutta being the capital of British Indian Empire. Thts the only reason.
