My favorite thing in the world is when Dan lowkey gets into Olivia's presentations and starts taking a side on the issues. Even when he's contrarian, it's to be funny and allow Olivia to present more clarifying knowledge. Didn't expect these segments to become my fav. S/o Olivia for keeping me in tune with the tea!!
I actually agree with Ethan’s critique on the Mr. Beast. I think it’s a commentary on how consumerist our society is even in the media we consume. Just being kind and helping people get hearing aids is not exciting- it has to be ramped up x1000 to keep the attention span of viewers.
I agree as well. I LOVE Mrbeast and everything he’s doing. But 6 minutes for this? Really? On the main Chanel? There’s so much more he could expand on. Maybe I’m a boomer in this sense but I watch RU-vid for longer content. If I want something shorter I’ll go to insta or TikTok. Are people really watching 6 minute RU-vid videos?
I don’t watch MrBeast besides on H3, but what _if_ the Beastman is trying to make that point himself? I did notice how quickly he had the part asking someone “what’s better? Hearing? Or $10,000?” Maybe he’s getting tired of being give-money-away-guy, or maybe I’m reaching so far off this limb that I might hurt myself from having zero context 🤷♂️
I do wonder if a lot of the people didn't feel okay to have a very personal moment on camera because they don't want some dork to meme them crying on video and the one's with only the money were okay with that showing up on video.
The weird thing is that yea her parents were fucked and owned slaves I think, but Helen herself advocated for very left-leaning issues, and she got a lot of shit for it. They would say that she's just a parrot for her handler person. They need to do a segment where they look into her a bit more lol. I do love to see Helen on a jet ski though, that's what she would have wanted.
podcast is so dedicated to viewer experience, they gave us a deafness simulation midway thru to help us understand the importance behind ethans point better. w dan. Wan.
My husband and i have been going "that doesn't work eitheerrr" at like any minor incoveniences around our home, grocery stores, errands, etc. Etc.. and it always makes us laugh after and we can't stop!
I think all of the crew members have their own unique "thing" they bring to the show to make it special and Olivia has definitely found hers with the powerpoint drama. Seriously becoming one of my favorite recurring segments. If she had a youtube channel doing just that, I would sub so fast lol.
Her signature bit is actually the most prolific now. She’s made it to the episode title multiple times & it’s even more consistent than the button pushes
Honestly, Olivia is such a great add-on to the crew. I know it’s been awhile since she first joined but seeing the dynamic she brings to the show is so amazing. She makes me laugh a ton with her side comments 🖤
i've only started watching h3 again for a month now, but olivia is definitely in my top 3 from the show. when did she join? idk why but i just assumed the entire cast been together for a few years with how much chemistry they all got lol
I’m so glad we’re continuing the Olivia PowerPoint saga. It’s tea we didn’t know we needed, and Ethan getting super into them and his commentary killlll meeeeeeee.
I’ve worked in audiology for 4 years and my dads been wearing hearing aids for about 7 years but has had hearing issues for over 25 years. And the guys is so right tbh, Hearing aids can not give you back hearing that you’ve lost, It amplifies sounds. I’ve tried them on many times and have gone through adjustments and it’s a lot, things sound weird and almost like you’re in a tunnel and people sound robotic. It’s EXTREMELY overwhelming especially for older people who go years with hearing issues and only give in after being worn down by family members or the hearing has gotten so bad. One problem here in Florida is that there is a huge market for “audiology specialist” who are NOT “audiologist” and so many of them are soley focused on the sale since they work off of commission and don’t actually know/care to take the time to do the adjustments with older, more difficult clients and run their pockets like you couldn’t believe especially when they don’t have family members coming in to help make desicions. There is so many stories I have of the specialists Ive worked with taking advantage of the older patients here in Florida. So many of them end up giving up because they feel defeated, embarrassed and worn out from having to constantly make adjustment appointments. I finally had to leave the job seeing how bad it was and knowing my dad was one of those people who was taken advantage of. Now I won’t let him buy a pair without me there and I do all his cleanings and maintenance because they charge these people out the ass for things that are done in literally 30 seconds, can be done by anyone and should come as free manitence for the price they pay compared to cost. Its amazing what Jimmy has done and I really hope jimmy is provided these people with ALL the aftercare that goes into getting your first hearing aids. Without adjustment appointments, feedback tests, etc there going to be useless to them.
Isn't the same true with cochlear implants for deaf people? I took asl for a year in highschool and was told it was offensive to ask about them because they don't really help and are just a way to shill money. Idk I'm not a part of that community but I'm curious if you know anything about that
I was thinking maybe that's what the 10 G was for. But idk how helpful that's going to be if it's gone because it was used for food or another necessity and it could completely fck someone's ability to recieve assistance, depending on their income, etc. I have heard some companies are trying to get hearing aids into vending machines. Maybe they have better, cheaper tech not too far down the road...I hope.
@@handsoap3346 It really depends on the audiologist and his patience with the patient & the patient’s willingness/patience to keep up with the appointments needed to get things right for them. Some FULLY take advantage by presenting it like it will “restore” their hearing magically just to make the money and that’s what’s wrong with the field. They need to be straight forward about the work that will go into it, and the frustration it will cause, the total life adjustment, and the fact that it might Not work.
@@apriljk6557 was definitely thought about the disability aspect too but maybe he only gave it to those who wouldn’t be effected by it. & they sell cheap hearing aids all over the internet but hearing aids are unique to every user. You could buy the cheap ones online but here in Florida, going to an audiologist with 1. Hearing aids you didn’t buy from them and 2. Knowing they are a cheap online brand, they will charge you ridiculous amounts for adjustments and feedback tests, which really doesn’t help someone who can’t afford it. Some audiologist and specialist I’ve worked with would lie and say they couldn’t even do the adjustment cause they didn’t find it worth it and knew the patient most likely wouldn’t be a return customer. And usually, hearing coverage SUCKS with almost all insurances I’ve verified.
@@nopeee420 that's absolutely ridiculous. I'm sorry for anyone who has to deal with any of that mess. And has to support themselves and/or a family with those barriers. Disability assistance is far too difficult to even just apply for, let alone qualify.
One of my best friends was deaf. She didn't wear hearing aids and preferred not to. When I asked her why she doesn't, she said that she can hear everything when she has them on and that's exhausting to her. She proceeded to tell me that she doesn't know how people who can hear do it all the time and that the constant noise would drive her insane. Maybe that's why some of the deaf individuals preferred other things over the hearing aids.
my step dad does the same thing. He's not totally deaf but registered deaf, like he reaches the threshold to be considered functionally deaf. He chooses not to wear his hearing aids because the finds the sound of the microwave annoying lmao.
The crew is so family and a nice balance right now I just want this same podcast same crew for atleast another 20years and have 62 year old Ethan and crew screaming “OLI LONDON!!”
I get so offended that Ethan always thinks British people are royalists 🤣 I don’t know a single left leaning person that doesn’t hate the whole monarchy!
Seriously, nobody I know watched or cared lmao... this whole ceremony was so ridiculous. An old man sitting on a fancy chair getting a fancy hat put on him because he's related to people who are somehow above us... give me a break.
My sister is deaf. She went deaf about 5 years ago as the result of Susacs disease. When she got her cochlear implant she hated it. She said it helped her hear but compared our voices to like hearing a cat meow. She had to relearn hearing basically and decided to have them removed instead and learn asl. I know Jimmy was trying to do something good but I hope he and those he helped did their research before hand.
I think this was likely the overall point of the article they read, idk if it was communicated effectively to people who don’t know about deaf and HoH culture. There’s so so much nuance in the topic, and not a whole lot of people understand that.
Watching the video I don't think any of these people were given a cochlear implant. I think they were hearing impaired getting regular hearing augmentation hearing aids. Which I think is good, because as you say, CIs aren't really a fun time for the person so rather unsuited to a wholesome video about returning senses. I don't think the video really has to do with deafness and deaf culture, to me it's very clearly a video about hearing impairment. But then it's only clear to me because I'm educated, the masses probably watch it and think these people were actually deaf.
@@LadyAurian I only listened to the podcast so I didn't actually watch the video. Based off Mr beasts title I just assumed they were deaf because, you know, he said they were. But after reading your comment that makes sense. She had to have surgery for it and that alone cost about 100,000 for 1 cochlear.
@@ripi-si3102 Yeah the title definitely suggests it would be cochlear implants, but based on the visuals and the reactions of the people I'm fairly confident it's regular hearing aids for hearing impaired people. As you say with your sister, CIs being turned on is not a fun experience generally. I'm hearing impaired myself, have been a hearing aid user for 13 years and the hearing aids and reactions look like my type of people, rather than actual deafness.
@@LadyAurian 100% that’s the real issue IMO is Beast man acting like they cured total deafness. Like paying to improve the hearing of so many people who could easily, if it were affordable, is beautiful enough a thing... no need to exaggerate
I was thinking about picking up a shift at work this Saturday and was like "Why do I feel like I have plans that day?". It's because I've been hearing about Zach's May 13th show every day for the past few months. I'm not even going.
I’d love to see Chris on the pod to talk about their experience with coming out and that whole situation. They grew up in a small town in North Carolina. They replied to a tweet not too long ago basically saying that there’s nothing anyone on the internet could say that would be more hurtful than shit they’ve heard from some of their actual friends/family.
I'm liking the origin of Dark Swerdlove with Dan keeping the black hoodie on for the podcast, embracing his inner Sith Lord. Hoping he makes a return in future episodes!
I was in a 5 year long abusive relationship. I found my now fiance 4 months after. If Taylor was in a bad relationship she was probably over it and ready to move on way before they actually broke up.
My issue with Mr Beast's videos is that it's about sensationalism, it's trying to give people a good feeling without diving into the complexity of something like hearing issues (same with the 'curing blindness' episode) and poverty. It's meant as entertainment without even a grain of educational content and that bothers me. Giving large amounts of money is also not as easy as it seems, you don't know if people have debts or are on benefits, suddenly gaining such a large sum of money can actually de-stabilize someone's financial situation.. Like if they are on benefits they'll no longer be on benefits but it's not a large enough amount to live off for more than a year tops (and that's really pushing it). Then they need to re-apply for benefits after the money has been used up and that can end up in a situation where people are without any income for a period of time before they're back on benefits, that can even result in homelessness. Giving this money likely isn't solving the financial hardships these families are facing, it's a temporary boost at best and at worst it's something that complicates their life even more. I very much agree with the author of the article that described Mr Beast's content as "inspiration porn", it's unfortunately not uncommon to invade the privacy and integrity of disabled people in order to entertain an audience. For many people with disabilities it's ultimately not a good experience to be part of media like this, your personal struggles are watered down to sensationalized segments and the 'solutions' offered are almost always temporary and lack any real impact. I feel really uncomfortable watching videos like that because these people are put in a vulnerable position where the expectation that is put on them is to be thankful and make others feel good, I know that my opinion is not the same as most people but I find this type of content very exploitative.
A good way for Ethan to get Bruce to sleep, tell him long bedtime stories in the style of the southerner persona that came to life during the voice accent coach segment 😂
Whenever the podcast starts live and Ethan announces the day I always feel like a time traveller who lives in the future (really I just live in Australia so it’s already Tuesday hahah).
I love the Olivia power point segments- it satisfies our need for tea and it’s all validated by Ethan being so here for it - WITHOUT him being the one IN the thick of it. We can enjoy the drama with Ethan in these cases, like we are all on the same side, instead of having to be on Ethan’s side in his beefs.
lol Ethan has a degree in creative writing or literature or something like that. No wonder he comes up with such elaborate stories on the spot. Mans got talent
I always thought that’s a funny bit of lore. Like no shit you hated college bro, you got an abstract degree with no plan to use it, yeah there’s problems with the institution of higher education but that one was a you thing guy.
I think it would be funny if Zach edited in other sound bites into the Adin Ross 21 sound bite to cover all the ages so people stop lying about being 21.
also would like to say i’m so sorry the IVF didn’t work out 💔 we know how badly you guys wanted a baby girl. regardless if they decide to take a break and try for another girl, or go forward with one of the boys, that child will be LOVED and cared for. wishing ethan and hila the best!
As an SLP I understand why the Deaf community is upset with the Mr. Beast video. At the very least, it perpetuates a lot of misinformation about hearing and deafness. I would really encourage you guys to look more into Deaf culture before deciding that it’s not ableist.
Imagine being one of the people in the Mr. Beast videos who gets the hearing aid and finding out a majority of everyone else got an additional 10k cash and you were one of the people who didn’t lol
as someone who has learned about deaf culture the notion that deafness needs to be fixed is a HIGHLY problematic statement to make in the deaf community and MrBeast will definitely recieve push back from i think just the concept in general bc of that and honestly i think the hate is justified. dude didn’t do any thoughtful research on the ramifications of making a sensationalist video about “curing” deafness. someone as part of the hearing community just won’t understand the problem raised by deaf people bc they’re ignorant
You could also lay beside Bruce while he falls asleep and then leave when he's asleep. That's also sleep training. Or you give him specific things that help him get to sleep, like pacifier or stuffed toy or a blanket
See it’s so hard because I’ll be talking to people at the bar about what I enjoy watching and then they go look up H3 & it’s King Charles Sausage Fingers
i’m actually (personally) somewhat conflicted on how to feel about the Mr. Beast article. on one hand, i can recognize that what he’s doing is a positive thing and that he has the best of intentions, but it DOES feel kind of icky and exploitative. such short content on these types of issues really doesn’t allow for the education that probably should occur when making a video like this, otherwise the creator is just using this person’s struggle as a way to make money. it’s kinda similar to if a youtuber were to film themselves buying lunch for a homeless person. it puts all the focus on how saint-like the creator is for helping someone “lesser than” instead of really demonstrating how these conditions affect the people who experience them. i’m glad that everyone comes away happy, but i can’t get rid of that icky feeling
Agree. He has massive platform to educate but instead he does these videos... seems weird but i guess it makes sense since his demographics is young childern. Which is also scary af
ethan, as a hard of hearing person, i really struggle doing daily tasks and i’ve had a coclear implant, and it didn’t work, i had that surgery at age 8 after almost dying from MRSA. the fluid MRSA created inside my eardrum basically “rotted” away my 3 hearing bones in my right ear. i have a hearing aid and, it’s not the same. it’s unfortunate that people are ignorant towards ppl that are hard of hearing/def, but i definitely don’t think mr beast was trying to “exploit” ppl that are hard of hearing. BUT. a youtube vid def wasn’t appropriate, like you said i think a documentary would’ve been appropriate bc they could’ve touched on the very uncomfortable side of being hard of hearing. i honestly didn’t feel personally offended by anything mr beast did, it just should’ve been done better.
@Beth I I'm the opposite! I don't have regular TV anymore, but whenever I'm at my parent's, I binge that show. I'm not usually one for reality TV at all because it seems so fak, but all these people are legitimately dramatic enough on their own. Plu, it's been on so lon that there's so much history and stuff. Highly recommend for a guilty pleasure.
