We visited Olympia, the capital city of the state of Washington. Joe's Instagram: / joeysroadtrip Nic's Instagram: / nicole_from_philly Travel Vlog 318
I lived in Oly for five years (worked for the transit district). Fun fact: It is the southern most navigable harbor on the Puget Sound. It is also the home to a lot of very nice people.
they dredged the harbour which is super polluted from Cascade poll - a very polluted place, bringing in ships way too large to a very corrupt port shipping off old growth to China for cheap after making deals to put mills out of business here and to provide offshore Chinese milling.
I live in Olympia, Washington. The empty stand is intended to be empty to encourage performances such as poetry, music, etc. The empty stand is called a plinth.
I am an LA transplant who has called Olympia home for the past seven years. As an artist myself I chose to retire here because of its vibrant art/music scene. We have beautiful murals all over the downtown area. The State Theatre is not "boarded up"; Harlequin Productions produces wonderful plays there all of the time. You heard a chicken laying an egg when you were driving around that neighborhood. Towns without graffiti, crime and homelessness are rare these days. I absolutely love Olympia and have had no regrets choosing to relocate here.
You totally missed Olympia's vibrant and bustling Farmers' market by the waterfront which features live music every weekend, and the beautiful Northpoint waterfront and Olympic Mountains view and the nesting great blue herons nearby
Lived in Olympia for 10 years, Washington state 25 years. Wonderful weather, proud people & it does't get any better than the beauty of nature's surrounding's.
A great video ! Some lovely water views ! I agree, it's wonderful to see beautiful old buildings re-purposed, and not torn down ! A very interesting video, as always. Thank you so much, Joe and Nic.😊💚
I have been watching your VLOGs for quit a long time and I must say that thank you for such great entertainment. Your format in my opinion is excellent. And Nic, is a great addition, I love her opinions on the food. Again thank you for the GREAT content....
Currently live here. You forgot to go by the hospital and the HUGE homeless camps. there is a road going to the hospital that is lined with broken down rvs. The amount of homelessness and drugs is awful. The state take payers were charged with 800,000 dollars for big boulders for them to palce under the overpasses and along the highways and under our trees to prevent homeless from camping. I havent seen downtown that clean in years! This used to be a beautiful place to live years ago😢
They cleared that road but not the "jungle" a few months prior. Even put up expensive concrete barriers to keep them from coming back. Walking through that area will most likely result in someone calling the cops on you.
I was cleaning out the garage today, and came across an Olympia beer bottle cap. I used to enjoy those beers. Came inside, and here is a great video about Olympia Washington.. thank you. Your newer shows end with a meal, and always leave me hungry. And it ends with a fresh made blackberry pie with vanilla ice cream. I want to go to Olympia right now
So, random story, but I have to share. I was in Lincoln City, Oregon this last week on vacation. I roll into a pizza place (shoutout to Tie Dye Pizza) for lunch and order. While the pizza is being made/cooked, I start chatting with the person working (I presume the owner) and the topic of homelessness in Portland gets brought up. As the conversation carries along, he starts talking about this RU-vid channel he watches where they went to Oakland a couple weeks ago and he couldn't believe what he saw on the video. As he is telling me this, my gears start turning in my head, as I saw a similar video about a week before. Before I could say anything, he tells me it's a husband and wife that travels from city to city documenting it on RU-vid. Joe & Nic. Whoa!!! That's the same channel I watch. So, yeah, small world. Thought that was funny. Also, I really enjoyed the pizza I had. If anybody is ever in Lincoln City, stop by there and order yourself a pizza.
Oly was my home,my heart. I even at one point lived in a small row boat someone built a cabin on top of and it lived there in the harbor.. It was named Snog. A lot of people I knew had had their turn living in it . And then,..it sank, right there at the dock. :{ I lived right catty corler t o the old Thurston County Court House shown here, right across from the park. Hey! I used to get gallons of beautiful tasting water at that Artisian well, and there was no fencing around it. King Solomons,on main street downtown was the place you should have gone for a meal. It's been there for a very long time, burned down once and rebuilt, and decorated in 50s style. Sorry to go on,but I miss Oly so much. Phoenix,Arizona (where I live currently) is beautiful but it cant hold a candle to Olympia,Washington.
Olympia is 56k population, but when driving you dont even know if your in olympia , Tumwater, or lacey. Added up its like 130k people city limits. These 3 areas are all bundled together, and it feels like a decent sized city.
I like how its not biased with politics, it just is what it is. Nice little town, Im in Oregon, Ive been but lots of stuff here I never checked out might have to go again just to tour around. Thanks for the video.
Are you serious! Your politics in Olympia, Seattle and Tacoma have made it into another Portland. It has gotten cleaner with less homeless camps than it did have. The rest of the states’ citizens are sane but your sheer numbers in the cities overrule the rest of us. Vote red!
I live 20 minutes north of Olympia and I love both Oly and my own small town. But please, feel no pressure to move here. It's a terrible place. Just awful. Some of us are just crazy enough to love it.
Thanks .. I lived about 25 min from olympia near Rainier for about 11 years and walked around those dock areas y’all were at many times .. but worked in Seattle . I’m in Dallas now . Thx again .. it and Oregon are really beautiful places . I haven’t adjusted to not having mountains nearby here in Texas yet
Local since 1985. Love all your tours...been following for a year. Loved THIS TOUR OF OLY. Wish we could have given you some info for your tour... btw: The State Theater you pass...is not boarded up...and is VERY ACTIVE...with live plays all year round...very community oriented. One big reason for high crime: Because we're the State Capitol...all services can be had here (as far as government provided)...aka, it draws many people who are in freefall to want to live here. Outside of downtown....very quiet... I live 1 miles (walking) from dt. You'd think you were in a forest. In fact, your opening shot..of the statue....is looking west toward my home across the bay...really wish you would have driven up that way along the bay....MANY INLETS of Puget Sound, so LOTS OF ON THE WATER HOMES. You can set sail here, and go around the world.
Thank you so much guys. Will never visit in real life but thanks to you this virtual visit feels great. I've never seen marble from ... Alaska. Also really appreciate the food close-ups. THX! Cheers from The Netherlands.
Another great vid and narration. The cleaning up ppl of that city r remarkable ! Food looked yummy! The tab was a great price 4 all that plus leftovers! Ty guys 4 ur vids and Joe I'm glad u were safe from that sketchy area😮. Stay safe guys
If you'd continued on through that part of Washington State there are a number of cities & towns worth seeing, like Port Townsend, La Conner, Everett, Mount Vernon & the old areas of Bellingham like Fairhaven. It's also beautiful road tripping across the state towards Spokane - lots of fantastic scenery & smaller towns.
Just road tripped from Everett to Spokane last month with clear blue skies. It's was fantastic. For all the negative views of the PNW lately, I'm still thankful to be born and raised here. It's truly beautiful
@@spoonman4024 The west coast in general is naturally beautiful. Unfortunately its the way people vote that put certain people in positions of power to destroy it.
Personally i think the Washington state Capitol building in Olympia is the most awesome of all Americans states. And Olympia is the coolest name of any state Capital city🤘
OZ// Thanks U2 !! I just love your Capital buildings with their beautiful domes !! (we don't have them !!) and that one has a BIG mountain of marble !! WOW -and the Tiffany chandelier !! Love seeing the food- always get hungry when you eat out !! LOL Another great trip !!
Some people hate it for exactly the reason some people love it. Different strokes for different folks. I've always felt more at home amongst the weird people.
My favorite part of your trips is the food. That restaurant food you ordered does look delicious, and the price is reasonable. Thanks for the educational tour of Olympia.
Love your walking tours and the numbers you provide! FYI, as a rule of thumb, housing should be no more than about 3x the household income. If greater than that, like in Olympia, housing is unaffordable, as your numbers show.
Washington State Legislature is only in session for selected months annually. This makes commerce and hospitality difficult because many restaurants and motels have occasional seasonal occupancy. Other than during legislative times Olympia is a bit “out of the way” and not a super hot tourism spot.
My kids were pages. It’s only as nice as the agents of darkness allow it to be. Mostly it’s nice. But Antifa, Communists, witches, and corrupt officials are never far away. On the other hand, there is a vibrant peace activist community. God bless the peacemakers.
Hey happy Sunday! I really like the opening sequence walking along the waterfront--one of my favorite things to do is wander around and take pics of boats with imaginative names. Great to see the folks doing their part cleaning up the littler! Regarding graffiti: when "artists" use public and private property as their "canvas", I believe the correct term is vandalism. There are some places that have designated alleys or walls for graffiti, and that's cool, I can get behind that. The Cajun shrimp appetizer looks delicious!
What a beautiful city, glad they didn't tear down the old building too. My opinion on the alleys and all the painting: if they are murals then it is artwork but if it is a bunch of unreadable mumbo-jumbo then it is graffiti and they need to stop. Thanks for sharing and you all be safe and have a great day
they just tore down the amazing Sherwood Press, the first press here, I HATE this town. They took out the mills, genociding the millers, and sent all business to China.
Thanks for the humor Joe, wen Nicole wondered why George Washington's wooden teeth wasn't shown, and she was curious about the type of wood, with ur response being, the kind that rots.😂😂 Love Nicole's nail color combination. Great videos guys. God bless you both.
I got a good laugh out of Nicole pronouncing marble the Rhode Island way. The accents in RI are very unique...get a bit of New York mixed in depending where you go. Grew up just over the line in Massachusetts so got a steady dose. LOL
Another great episode, easily you guys are my favorite vloggers Nice and smooth easy going comfortable as some jack with a touch if maple syrup.Keep traveling, nothing better.Safevtravels,May God be your xo pilot.Alo d best,on your trip out west.🙏👍🌠
Thanks for educating us for showing us the successes and failures of America. Very amazing with your gorgeous and beautiful young lady. I do enjoy all your videos , you are a great American man.
Nicole said "Marble" the exactly the same way we say it in Australia. Words like 'car', 'marble', 'spar' are the same in much of New England as they are in Australia.
STP route if I remember right goes through a very small portion of Olympia as its boundary has a weird looking peninsula that cuts through neighboring Lacey.
Now I’m all caught up. LoL another great video. And if I were betting on population on these last 2 cities i would have lost definitely thought this would have a bigger population. Some of that art is pretty good even some of the graffiti now and then. Thanks for showing everything but do watch out for yourself in some of these places. That being said I’m sure you do a lot of research on these places before hand. Nice looking neighborhood you went through. But there’s definitely a crime problem there and it also looks like housing anywhere on the west coast is either high or extremely high. LoL. Good looking meals live that Cajun andouille sausage if that’s what it was and shrimp anytime with Cajun seasoning is pretty good. I’ll let you guys have the bourbon I’ll take my scotch lol. Looking forward to your next stop. Safe travels my friend. Keep filming and I’ll keep watching
Great opening ground and drone footage! Love the old Capitol building! Would love to tour that building! Love the water Springs. I think it’s cool the alleys are named. But it is sad the graffiti has marred the city. Very nice homes around Olympia. Gorgeous rotunda at the Capitol building. Love the chandelier. Your food looked delicious. Looking forward to seeing Spokane!
Great video and commentary as usual. While in Washington try to include a trip thru the San Juan Islands on the ferry leaving from Anacortes. Visit either San Juan or Orcas for a day!
Thanks for visiting my states capitol city. Like any larger city here we have our share of issues homelessness being one of the larger ones. The State theatre is very much open, the building is presently having a major interior renovation done as a good friend of mine works there. Harlequin Productions puts on spectacular shows which many people have raved about. I highly recommend any visitor thats up for great live theatre to check out a show...you won't be disappointed. A few fun facts about the capitol building itself..our current one that is. The flags you saw in the four corners of the rotunda represent each of our 39 counties with King County being the largest where Seattle is located. The exterior of the dome does get cleaned usually every 3-5 years or so given the dingy look the moss and other elements that live upon it. The building is also modeled after our nations capitol in D.C.. We are also the only state in the country whose flags primary color is green which is fitting given we are The Evergreen State. As for restaurants in town, there are so many and the vast majority are very good places based on personal experience and from what friends of mine have told me. I am glad your dining experience was a good one. Thanks for visiting and I hope your visit was a positive one and that you will return in the future.
Another fun note. During the Nisqually earthquake, the dome actually lifted, separated from the base, and slammed back down. Amazingly solid construction!
You should go visit Shelton since your so close! It's the Christmas tree capitol of the world. Neat place to visit is the high steel bridge.. Also Taylor Shellfish is there, alot of oysters and geoduck come from there.
LOL Joe - you walked around the area I have never been to while living here for 10 years. Hope you guys enjoyed your visit here, despite the messy parts of the town!
I really like this channel you are doing a very good job with your videos. I have been inspired and will do a trip around America in the future. I don't live there.
Take one of the ferry's if you come back. It's awesome out on Puget Sound. You probably will be sorry you don't have a drone after all the photogenic places you have been. I love this type of content!
Love your video's always watch .. Where do they find the money and time for all that spray paint .. What a shame they cant put there efforts into something worth while like the people cleaning the street ...Thanks for posting..
Looking at your date, the reason so many people are cleaning up is because they are preparing for the bi annual Arts Walk. Arts Walk is in the first weekend of October and the last weekend of April.
I enjoyed watching your exploration. Jay Inslee does not take care of Washington State. You definitely do not want to be in the alleyways when the sun goes down. I would assume most city capitals have problems.
Nicole's accent sure has changed since you guys have been to Rhode Island. I caught her saying "maahble" for marble and "picktcha" for picture. Good ol' New England! 😊
Not sure if the winding stairs I walked up with my grandpa in 1958 is in use. We went to the top of the capitol dome. The stairs circles around between the inner and outer dome of the building.
When I lived in Vancouver B.C. I made frequent trips across the boarder to Olympia. Always thought it was a quaint and clean town. Don't know if they are still in business but this is also the birth place of Olympia Beer. That being said, due to the high cost of housing and living expenses, very high crime rates, it is one place I would never recommend to move to. Whoooo, whooooo, that appetizer looks incredible .... I'd drive there just for that !!
Olympia brewing company is no longer. The beautiful tourist building and all the other out buildings, every window smashed, spray painted walls, parts burnt down. It is a total public eye sore. You see daily when you go by.
I hope you make it to the Wisconsin state capitol in Madison. It has marble from all over the world including the very rare green marble. It also has one of the largest domes in the world for Nicole It’s amazing
