Olympic combination stereo 8-track tape player, radio, and record player repair

Here's an Olympic (actually a rebadged Electrophonic) "all in one" stereo that contains an 8-track tape player, AM/FM radio, and a component two-speed record changer that was made by Maestro. Magnavox used a very similar disaster changer in some of their early '70's models. The receiver needed it's amplifier section overhauled and the record changer needed a new cartridge and lubrication.

Actually owned one of these when I was a kid. Worked great up to about 80% volume before it would encounter distortion! Glad to see you preserve the old relic!

Another nice stereo. Really like the way you did Linda Ronstadt’s Different 🥁 Drum. Very interesting. .Heard this song at my Aunt Georgeanne and Uncle Skip’s House.The beginning sounds the same as the end. Copyright tags. Very ridiculous, you and Shango066 are so right. Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen, I heard the following year. It was 1985. Yes, I saw the dial cord in this Olympic stereo. Good thing you didn’t burn it in half with the soldering iron. 946 degrees Fahrenheit. That would do it. Tried a dial cord restringing myself back in 2002 or 2003. Had a dearly liked 1978 pocket size cassette player radio. Ended up throwing it away because I failed the dial cord repair job on it. Yes, dial cords are hard, not Impossible. Always remember, whatever you set your mind to, you can do it. Keep these great stereo videos coming. No matter what brand the stereo of the 1970’s. They’re all a piece of history. I’ve even seen some decent 1980’s stereos. At least, in my opinion. I also forgot to mention the 8 track player on this unit. Great unit, along with the record player.

Fantastic video. Maestro Changers were absolutely junk. That was the mark 1 Magnavox used. Plastic junk. The earlier Meastro 50 was a very problematic changer as well. Two ex employees from VM got together and made the maestro junk changers. They were the most inexpensive changer on the market. This was a great video! Thanks .

Nice job on the entire system, Bryan! @ 29:25 I AGREE, but THAT'S why I use sapphire needles wherever I can as they don't seem to "dig in" to a styrene 45 like diamonds do. Also, that's why I look for actual vinyl pressings, too!

I ran into a situation similar to this where both channels were distorted and there was a cold solder joint at the common point where the collector of both channels on the output transistors met. The leads were corroded looking, cleaned them up, hit it, and it worked great after that. It was out of a console stereo from 1965 and sounded absolutely amazing through my speakers that I put them through.

That is one of the MAJOR reasons I never liked and still don't like automatic changer/turntables. Watching that tonearm drop like a ton of lead tells me that the records are going to get creamed shortly and the stylus will need replacing very often. Even some of the top end automatic changers are brutal on records and styluses.

You're right about the brand. I got a rebuilt Electrophonic unit without the speakers & phono and it's totally identical. Love your videos & always look forward to them. Sorry to hear about your loss in the family. You're right, you never know what's gonna happen. I had a cousin that lived in MS and I only met her several years ago, then a few years ago, she died in a fire in her place, due to an old heater that fell over & didn't have the safety shut-off.

My parents got a XAM console stereo in 1969. French Provincial. (My Mom worked at Korvette's part time in the evening in the dress department.) The cabinet was beautiful, the stereo was dreadful. When you were playing a record you could not put the lid down because of feedback. It had woofers of 12" but they were pitiful, to say the least. And even with the lid up, you could not play it very loud because of dreadful distortion. My Mom went French Provincial that year...!

I still 👍 like it after 9 months. From 28:50 to 29:12. How gracefully ya did that Linda Ronstadt song. I could tell that ya did a clip on it, due to copyright garbage. The song's beginning, and ending "overlap", or, "loop", in the most perfect way, all in front of the very same window. I came out by finding this out, on the order of more than a half a year ago. All songs remain copyrighted for 95 years before we can FINALLY have free use of them. That's if I am 👎 not mistaken. Again, 😊 Happy New Year from your friend, Jeff.

Since that is a class ab amplifier there is some point where both transistors are on. What you are most likely hearing is crossover distortion from improper bias. The two transistors probably shorted because of them both being on while too much current flowed through them. I’m not too sure about equipment from the 1970s but these stereos usually have a transistor biased to provide the bias voltage drop between the npn and pnp output transistors

Hi Bryan , Nice radio, in need of some love and a good home. Its nearly all there to rebuild pretty much. I hate polystyrene records, even tracking less than 2 grams damage can be done by as little as one play. I love your channel and all your videos. I want to start my own channel but am hesitant to do so because there are too many asshats out here on RU-vid, trolls, idiots, nasty attitudes galore. IDK how you manage to deal with it, as my first reaction would be to slap them down, the little insects and know-it-all's which they are. Thank you for doing what you would here in spite of the aggravation factor. I learn aq lot here, at Shango's as well as Mr/. Carlsons channel, Bandersen tv and Jordan Pier

I am amazed how many 45 rpm records were produced with the hole off center. I always used to return such discs to the shop. Sometimes a complete batch was made like that. The wow produced by such a lack of quality control still hurts my ears today. Things were NOT always better in the past!!
@ldchappell1
@ldchappell1 8 лет назад
+Michael Beeny I always wondered why they made the spindle holes so large on 45s. Growing up in the 60s I didn't always have a record player with an integrated adapter or a plastic insert. I used to put the 45 on the turntable, turni it on and centeri it by placing my index finger on the edge of the spindle hole and tapping gently until the 45 was prefectly centered. I just wonder why they didn't use the smaller hole like they used for 33s and 78s in the first place..
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 8 лет назад
+ldchappell1 In the UK the only 45s with the large hole were ex duke boxes. For these you could buy black plastic adapters to convert the large hole to the normal small hole.

At work today the lab upstairs was getting cleaned out and one of the workers was carrying a record player out to the dumpster. It belonged to the lab manager that apparently kept it there for 30+ years. Not wanting to see a vintage turntable go to waste I grabbed it. Haven't looked at the model yet, but it's an Olympic combination record player, 8-track, and stereo tuner with the 'diamond needle' logo on the corner of the record player. Not sure if these were considered cheap or whether the sound quality is any good but 'Made In Japan' and it being fairly heavy gave me hope as Japanese solid state electronics from this era are pretty good. I'm going to tear into it tomorrow and see whether it's worth the effort.

With regards cartridge pins. These cartridges are cheap and designed to be used on cheap turntables, hence the build quality. Better audiophile cartridges made today are built to high standards and the pins are solid. Personally I wouldn't let the 'crosley cartridge' or any such cartridge or turntable anywhere near my records.

That little silver pin the 33 record sets on & adjusts the speed to 33 rpm Is prettty neat. & when you play 45's It stays on the 45 rpm without Having to remember to adjust The turntable to 45. Simetimes I forgot to adjust it to 33 rpm or 45 rpm. I'd keep it. I have a usb & bluetooth turntable I use to burn Records to CD's. I love turning old Records to CD's. Thanks for doing this very instructive video. Not many people would have gone to all the trouble with such a cheap unit. It is beyond me why a company would come out with such a cheap, cost-cutting turntable. It does nothing to further their name or reputation. If anything, people buying such a cheap piece of junk, will think less of that company when it breaks or plays poorly and swear to never buy from them again. Regards, Tom
@Oldbmwr100rs

+THOMMGB sadly, most people just don't care what they buy. People will buy cheap junk and when it breaks just toss it and get another. That's just the sad reality. I know no one who loves music who would play their records on a cheap crummy record ruining "record player" like that. Most people don't care if it ruins records though, they toss them when their tired of them like everything else.

First thing I suspect when I hear distortion: The Transistors. (Unless it's a tube set) How do you glue the pins on the cartridge? Is it just putting super glue around the base of the pins where it meets the cartridge? And letting it dry? The turntable has a lot of wow.

Direct coupled amps certainly are good for taking out driver and preamp transistors when output transistors go short. I have a JVC Nivico 55 watt per channel receiver that has a shorted 2SD180 output transistor and I need to see if it took out anything else besides possibly the power transformer. Hopefully the transformer just had varnish smoking and not the enamel on the coils. BTW the emitter resistor burnt but still reads the correct value of 0.5 ohm.

Everything seems to work but the FM section is a such a low volume it's unusable. All the tubes are orininal Silvertone branded. All check good except two in the FM RF AMP section, and the EM84 eye tube was dim. I've ordered new so I'll see if that works. If that doesn't how do I obtain a schematic? 17:00 I'm surprised Collaro would build a changer like that one, since it wouldn't work with 45s from the UK or Australia. I do remember some Magnavox branded Phillips mini-changers with a similar design, though; I wonder if Maestro licensed these units from them. That thing is pretty ingenious, in a plastic fantastic way. Maestro seemed like sort of a job shop; I remember the 50 series that ended up in Motorola, Phonola and other low-end portables and consoles and sold for $19.95 at Radio Shack. But I also heard that they took over production of the BIC 900 series as nearby V-M slipped into bankruptcy. Just one of those oddball companies that makes me think of the Blondi song "Shaila"; "She was in history, She's just a number" .
@efandmk3382
@efandmk3382 7 лет назад
And you should be surprised if Collaro made a changer like this. They didn't. Why did you think it was a Collaro? Because it was used in some low end Magnavox stereos? Actually, this changer was made by Phillips. Magnavox used them in their low end sets. Collaros were expensive. Magnavox also used VM changers occasionally (in low end sets).

This was one of the cheapest stereos you could find in its day - basically, the Crosley of the early 1970s (though, obviously, it's still superior to most Crosley stuff today). So, for something like this, it's almost certainly plastic knobs, possibly with that fake chrome plating they used to do.

+Rich Johnson Rich, BSR changers are often maligned by the purists, but if properly maintained, they are not really all that bad. Certainly better than a lot of the Crosley, etc. record players today. Are they high end? No, but for casual use they are dependable and functional, and you can usually find them for cheap. I recommend sticking with models from the 1960s or early 1970s. Starting in the mid-1970s, BSR began switching from metal parts in the changer mechanism to plastic parts, which obviously don't hold up as well. I own a pair of BSR players, both from the early 1970s. I have a 2-speed semi-auto turntable (not changer) in my basement stereo, and I have a four-speed changer I swapped into an old Emerson radio-phono whose original 78-only changer was completely trashed by a previous owner. I bought both from eBay auctions for less than $100 total. I did a basic clean/relube maintenance on them, replaced the idler in the changer, and of course new needles in both. Today both perform flawlessly. I'm also a big fan of the Magnavox Micro-Matic units of the 1960s and early 1970s, and many of the Voice Of Music models.

Those changers make me cringe. Especially on 45s, all it takes is the mechanism dropping the needle just off a 45 onto the platter and damage your stylus. On that platter in this video, it looks like it would be a disaster for the stylus if that happened, or if it didn't drop the 45 and the stylus got put down on the platter. I would never want to play a "good record" any other way than placing it carefully on a still 12 inch platter by hand, then spinning it up and placing the stylus carefully myself or using a model with the gentle style lift/lower lever. When I was a kid, I had a Milovac cheap combo phono, 8-Track, and radio unit and the phono was a BSR changer that never would do the record-dropping correctly. It sometimes wouldn't drop the record and sometimes would drop 2 records at a time so I always put the records on the platter myself and did not use its automatic mechanism to start the playing. It would also drop the needle off the record missing it completely.
@pcno2832

+3Cr15w311 I've always heard that with changers like this BIC, or any of the custom trim VMs that have ribbing in the wrong direction, it's insane to use it without some kind of mat. It's too bad the tinsel rings don't line up with the 10" and 7" positions, if they did they'd serve some purpose.

Google '8 track belt'. There are a number of places still providing them. That record changer part is probably one of the worst record changers in existence. Maestro made them and it was a cheap knockoff of any changer. BSR made these changers back in the 70's and early 80's and it has better quality, GE made a similar changer that I have which for my Wildcat and Automatic series and it was a VM clone. The mechanism on my GE which was also copied from VM and it uses a plastic tonearm with a GE logo on top and a ceramic cartridge which is still good, and it plays well.

You mean the GE record changer for the Automatic (Mono) and the Wildcat (Stereo) that has the VM style changer.

Yes! The GE changer for both the Automatic and Wildcat are Glasser Steers, and GE used it from 1967 through 1975. It had a Glasser Steers type record changer with a tonearm where it has the GE logo on top of the tonearm. I don't know why this changer was GE in-housed or not by Glasser Steers.

+Musicradio77 Television Network I've always heard that the GE "Tonal 1" series changers were what they created from the GS takeover, though looking at the guts, it looks like a lot of VM and in-house features went into them (the only changer I've ever seen that could only switch off by cycling). But I'm not sure about the later ones, with a big plastic lever and rotary controls for speed and size (in players that usually had Irish-made amps), that was probably an in-house GE design.

Why try to restore it back to new again, when it was total junk even when it was new?
