This is what I found at an estate sale. Vintage Soundesign PLL turntable with cassette deck and 8 track. It was beautiful and gorgeous machine. I restored it and enjoyed playing my vinyl collections. Really nice findings for me.
I found a soundesign model no. 4722. The turntable is missing sadly, but it still works. There is a huge hole in the case so I might make a new case for it.
Very good restoration job, well done. Never had a combo console, just separate components. My parents had a Dual record changer unit; they liked to stack up to 6 or 7 I think was the max; especially Christmas records. I never liked changers because they weren't great for records; the dropping and sliding of two record surfaces. Amazing how all that old grease often turns to glue!
I bought one like this in 1974 I paid $79.00 @ a store called Zody's in Lynwood CA an year and a 1/2 I sold it to my sister for $100.00 and I bought Pioneer for $200.00 and that one was stolen from my apt.
I could tell it was a BSR but they used a plastic cam for the reject mechanism hmm! Soundesign was a cheaper brand then others in my opinion! But as long as they weren't using crosley type needles back then! The needles were good on those turntables but they used crystal cartridges that would go bad from time to time! Anyway nice job once again on the restore!
Is this stereo system available for sale and if so how much would you charge for it? It is very similar to a system my grandmother had when I was a child.
Nice video!! Just picked a similar model up at an auction. 8 track works fine. Record player wasn’t working though. It is gummed up like yours was. Hopefully a thorough cleaning will be all it needs! Thanks for posting this - it is just what I needed to learn where to start!
My 1982 Soundesign Classic Collection console had the exact same record changer. Played the heck out of the whole set for 10 years and enjoyed it very much.
Teddy, you may be a man of few words, but your actions speak louder than anything I know in your excellent time-delayed, audio-restoration videos. Another job well done!
Thank you for your compliment on my work. I like just work without speaking a word, video will tell you everything regardless of what the language you use.
Hi, Jason. Thank you for your compliment on my video. Most of the turntables I found were BSR, and it's much easy to restore or clean it than other makers'. As you said it was common. Teddy
Yes i have had a lot of them and have worked on a few myself not quite to the extent that you do though I see you do work on all kinds of electronics i may have a project for you
Nice restoration job on this Soundeisgn. My college dormitory in the early 80's had a lot of these all-in one budget stereos. (Panasonic, Electrophonic, Emerson).
Great-looking Soundesign system! Excellent video and restoration. I really like all-in-one stereo systems like this from the 1970's. I see you have a lot of other vintage electronic videos on your channel so I'm going to subscribe. Thanks!
+Dan O'Connor Hi, thank you for your comment and subscription. Me too, I like 60' and 70' electronics. I will make more videos, so enjoy my channel. Thanks again.
15:10 LOL! Spent an entire weekend looking for a spring under similar circumstances. Took everything in room out only to find it caught in the window blinds.
Excelente canal.
Nice job! Those soundesign all in one's really take me back! This looks to be early 80's or late 70's. Did this originally have led lights that lit up to the music levels?
I'm not sure if anyone told you that you can play the record player without turning on the main power. There is a built in power device that operates through the record player power switch that if you use it, and after record ejects at end of record, when switch pops off, so does stereo.
Hey Teddy. When you restored that whole stereo system did you also test the cassette deck to see how well it records? :) If so what were the results? :)
@@teddyhashee You may want to get for yourself a couple of blank audio cassettes normal bias try using the tape deck to record on them & see how well the tape deck will record. What do you think about that?😀
@@markcovington8159 Indeed, your way is right, and I have been doing it by myself too. I just do not remember about the soundesign's cassette deck testing because it was long time ago.
There is one just like this for $50 at a local antique shop. I want to purchase it but hope somebody who reads this can answer my question...... both the radio and the turntable work, but the volume is turned all the way up and is still pretty quiet - even quieter on the turntable than the radio. Any ideas why and how I could repair??
You want to clean the volume controller as well as balance and other controller. Use contact cleaner something like this one. amzn.to/2wzFv4N Most of the case, sound will come back as it should be. How to clean, check my other videos. I always got good results. Teddy
That is truly amazing! I have never seen a stereo system with both a cassette deck and 8-track player in the same unit before now. Great cleanup and restore all-round. Surprisingly you didn't need to change any caps (e.g. in the power supply) or blown electronic parts (on the main board).
I think I am lucky that most of the vintage electronics I restored did not need to replace caps. But in order to get more high quality sound, I may need to work with that in the future. Thank you!
When you try the turntable, I noticed that the arm with the automatic rises too much. You should adjust the arm lift pin, because in this type of turntable the arm must be in horizontal position. So when the turntable is about to stop, the arm goes down to the stand before the lock catches shut.
Hi Teddy, nothing for information. In the BSR turntable, the arm that rises so much in automatic, goes well in the P163, P182, P200, P204 models.Because in all four models, the arm works horizontally.
Hi teddy, the BSR turntable with the plastic plate, using them with the long stick of the disc changer with the passing of time on the disc forms a circular sign.Because when the disc falls on the plate, this sledge on the plate turns. For this reason, the BSR turntables with the plastic plate mounted stereo sound, had the black plastic short pin.
Great video! I used to have an old Marantz hifi, very like that. I wish i had held on to it. The chintzy plasticky crap they make, these days, just doesn't hold a candle to those golden oldies!
+Cliff Lewis Hi, Cliff. Thank you for your comment and I agree with you. These vintage one is really good, still have its great sound and invincible to any these days plastic one!!
i had that very one you are working on here as a kid... it sounded hollow and had the cheapest speakers known to man. I saved up enough money to buy my own choosing of a stereo and I bout a technics receiver and turntable. you mention RETRO sound yeah I remember it well... junk the bottom of the barrel ... but what ever you touch from watching your videos turn to gold.... .... I wish I had your talent.
+Duane Thamm Hi, duane. Thank you for the compliment comment. I agree with you, Soundesign is as it said, good design for both sound and style. I like these vintage guys much better than these days stereo. Teddy!
Good yob teddy nice video hey I have almost the same stereo and the same problem with the oof and on switch is stock the question is how can I fixed? Help me please.
The stuck switch will be the result of dried-out old grease. You want to completely remove the dried-out grease and apply new one. Reverse the turntable, follow from the switch to all moving parts, you will see they are seized by the old grease.
Hi, Margaretsville, thanks for your compliment on my restore project. After restoring vintage music player, and hear the sound, that is really good feeling!! Teddy
I noticed the tone arm raises too high in automatic mode. There's a knob behind the tonearm you can adjust to lower it. Other than that, super duper job 👍👍👍
+Robert Lopresti Hi, Robert. Thank you for the comment. I already sold this item, so I can not see the detail. However, I believe you are right. Next time when I found similar one, I will check it out. Thank you again and have a great holiday season.
+Robert Lopresti Thanks again. The item was sold to Canada, then person sold to another person, and there is no way to follow the buyer now. But I will keep in mind your advise for the future of my activities. Thanks.
Back in the days of honesty: "3 Watts RMS" on the rear of the speakers. Although it states only one 5" full-range driver, from the front, it looks like there are tweeters. So either they are fake tweeters, or they forgot to list them on the specifications.
Sometimes I found the "Back to the retro" design items. The radio, car, clock, etc... and it is nice to have them. By the way, I like vintage one that has scratches and scuff marks. After restoring these old one, it's start shining again. Teddy
Those speakers seem odd. From the front it looks like maybe an 8" woofer and a 3" mid-range/tweeter. But the description on the back only lists a "3 1/2" Full Range" speaker and a 3 watt power rating. Is the "woofer" actually a passive radiator, or just a dummy? Or is the description on the back just wrong? Either way, the speakers tended to be the weak link on those systems, so an upgrade would probably be worthwhile, though they sound better than the description on the back would suggest. Nice job of restoring the rest.
Hi, thank you for your comment. I think the description on the back was not correct. The speakers are all working one. Upgrading sound system by changing speakers are my next thing I need to learn. Thanks again.
If I was your neighbour, I would have taken my Aiwa and Sony to you, to make you work a little more, even if I believe you don’t miss my toys... Regards.
I need to find a cartridge (?) and a needle (?) for my record player that looks close to this. The turntable looks the same and is a BSR. Can anyone help me find it?
The reverse side of the changer, there is a sticker from original maker. You need to find the model number from it. Also if your tonearm still has its cartridge, inside of the cartridge there is a model number, so it will help you too.
I would have done the pots because the cleaner has lube in it. Perhaps you did it off camera. The two flat pieces on a fulcrum on the gear need a little machine oil. I wasn't throwing shade at your work. Sorry if it came off that way. I thought overall you did a nice job.
Thank you for updating the info. Back then I didn't use full length of video clip but use some of them for the youtube video. Right now I am using all my video footage not cutting any work, so I and also viewer can see what I did for the restoration. So I am not sure right now what I did for this turntable unless I check it back my original video. Anyway, with your advice, it is good for me as well as viewer for the reminder where to look for and what to do. Thank you again!
Buenas, felicitaciones, haces excelentes restauraciones, pones mucho esmero. Saludos y éxitos, desde Buenos Aires, Argentina. P/D: Se consiguen las púas ? Genial !!!!!!!!
Robby's Place Hi, yes. The speakers were came with console. Also as you said, finding these one is really tough job !! Thanks for your comment and sorry the delay replay.
Hi, I use multi purpose white lithium grease like these. amzn.to/2aRoZEK Before I also used high speed bearing grease (blue one) to the spindle and platter bearing. amzn.to/2alm55N But viewers told me that lithium grease is good enough all parts including bearing. I also use sewing machine oil, sometimes I mix grease with oil and made it more smooth. amzn.to/2aRpPSd Hope these info will help your DIY project. Teddy
I tidied up a turntable WILSON SL 601,I had a problem with the return of the arm at the end of the disc.In practice,he did not move on of two metal tabs on the toothed wheel that gets you up and moving his arm.Now the record player work's perfectly smoothy.
+Johnny Richardson Hi, Johny, thank you for the comment. The other day, I checked Fisher component turntable, and it has great sound. It has also 8 track, turntable, and radio. Hope you can find great one for yourself.
Hi Johnny. Yeah I found a Hitachi SDP-8410H stereo with 8track and BSR turntable at a Savers thrift superstore back in 2013. Sold it on eBay to a musician in California. He loved it!
+Javier Aguirre I always clean and polish front panel. Wash with mild detergent, then polish with plastic cleaner, goo gone, etc. Clear plastic panel will be cleaned glass cleaner as well as alcohol. If it has scratches, I use car compound to remove scratches. Thanks!
hello. excelent vídeo. i have the same turntable in the sony hkm 119. you know how use and adjustment the antiscaning? the arm tendence out the platern. congratulaciones for the job. thank you.
+TheRoberx1 Hi. The tonearm is going outside from the platter when you playing record? or When you start auto play, the tone arm will touch down out side of the platter? If your turntable's tonearm has anti-skating adjustment, you can use it to adjust. But I believe yours does not have adjustment. Usually such tonearm won't to goes out from platter while you are playing record. Let me know more detail. teddy
+Teddy Hashee Thanks for the reply. It is so. I do not see the shift adjustment . It is equal to your bsr . lower arm properly. The problem is that it does not move well , seems a bit harsh, then jump again and again . When it comes to changing groove jumps and stays in the same place . Thanks again for the reply. and your work is excellent . BSR not find the handbook is C197 . Regards.
+TheRoberx1 Hi, I believe it is from dried-up grease. I saw same symptom before, and after I cleaned all dried-up grease and made free all parts, all parts including tonearm movement became so smooth. You want to remove changer from its body and see the reverse side of the changer. I bet you will find many dried-up grease. You can use q-tips and paint brush, 70 to 10% rubbing alcohol to remove them. Then apply new grease to the parts. My other video shows how to do it, so check them out. I hope you can fix your turntable's problem. Teddy
I buy belts from ebay. Probably you want to buy set of belts that have various size of them, and you want to find best much length for yours. The belt made in China is not good, buy from USA or German maker.
I've been always told by nutjob audiophiles (then again I'm insulting myself) that you should have separate units for playing like records, cassettes and 8-tracks. I have been proven wrong because this piece of machinery, not only is it beautiful, it sounds great too. Nice work Teddy, you earned yourself a subscriber!
Hi Mike. Thanks for the comment and subscribing my channel. As you said that this one is complete by itself and have a great sound. In my garage, I have more than 10 console type stereo and other turntables that they are waiting to be restored. Thanks again.
You're welcome. I really like the look of that all-in-one. I really need to pick up a few things from these videos, I have a cassette deck awaiting some repairs. Nothing major, I would just like to record onto cassettes without holding down the record button when I shouldn't have to. Keep up the good work Teddy. Mike.
Good luck on your DIY restoring project. I had same issue with cassette deck, and it was gone when I removed all dried-up grease and clean the mechanism. Hope you can fix your problem too.
