You have to realize that the Japanese only saw the South Dakota coming towards them. They didn't realize the Washington was there until she opened fire. Lee stealthed a BATTLESHIP into point blank range.

The lookouts just saw two massive blobs moving through the dark, illuminated the first, saw a massive battleship, and just thought "Oh... SHIT" and just forgot there were two contacts. Truly a moment of luck spawned from panic

The Captain of the ship was Glenn Davis, a very capable sailor. Whether it was Lee's orders or Davis's, the USS Washington slid behind the burning destroyers as they approached. The IJN only had optical resources for locating other ships....it was some totally ninja stuff. Firing the star shells to blind them in the aftermath was the chef's kiss.

The craziest thing in this is that Admiral King liked him because even though he loved and was very protective of the Navy so was the perfect guy at the perfect time, he got along with essentially nobody and was notorious for his quick and hot temper. A few quotes to give you an idea of his personality: "He shaves every morning with a blowtorch"-FDR(he said that as a compliment) "The best way to win the war would be to shoot Admiral King"-Dwight Eisenhower "He is the most even-tempered man in the Navy. He is always in a rage"-One of Admiral King's daughters.

Mexican-American war was the same. And funnier now thinking back because they were at Veracruz as well. You had two future Presidents (Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S Grant), Longstreet, Robert E Lee, Winfield Scott, and a ton of others that were later higher ups in both the confederacy and Union armies. But Grant was most definitely the main character. Despite being assigned to the quartermaster, when one side got pinned down on the other side of town and had run out of supplies/ammo he volunteered to take it to them. Despite the fact that he would be directly in the line of fire for most of it.. he got on his horse and then slide over to the complete opposite side so he was shielded by his horse. The Mexicans didn’t know what to do. But he successfully got there AND back in a rather innovative way, saving half the force. He later said it was an illegal war to land grab a weaker nation (which it was). But he developed friendships with some Mexicans who later became the leaders of the revolution while he was President. Even petitioning to send aid to help overthrow the government/monarchy Emperor Maximilian. Think Phil Sheridan was sent IIRC.

19:28 another thing about Admiral Lee is he not only taught them how do their jobs, he also went to the lower enlisted men and ask them to teach him how to use pieces of equipment he didn’t know how to and learned how they did. Then once he was familiar with it and thought about it for a while, a day or two, comes back and ask/teaches them how to do it more efficiently

Something about guys with glasses make the best marksmen. I wore glasses all through Boy Scouts and the year I and about six or seven others in our troop decided to get our rifle merit badges I ended up being the only one who got it. Same thing happened when we did our shotgun merit badges.

Probably had a bit of both to do with it since it’s more difficult to see your target you need to work extra hard on your accuracy and because you’re heavily focused on that one thing you can get extremely good at it.

Yep. It's because starting out you have to figure out where the center of the blur is to hit it, so when distance shooting comes into play, instead of being a tougher target, it's just a slightly larger blur.

One of the few mistakes he makes in this video is referring to the South Dakota as a sister ship to the Washington. Washington was a North Carolina class battleship, the South Dakota was the lead ship of her class, which also included the Massachusetts and the Alabama.

For context, one of my grandpas tried joining, after Pearl Harbor. Sore he was color blind. But otherwise fine. He was turned down, want to know what he did for work? He worked in aviation/later aerospace, the companies he worked for later helped design and actually did components for the Apollo missions. They helped design and make the Bradley. And tomahawk cruise missile, by the time of the Apollo missions. He was high up and QA as t the company he worked for. Color blind and all. He was one of the lead, QA’s for all of the saturn 5, projects leading up to them. And all the Apollo missions. He had 2, 20 year retirements, from 2 major aerospace companies…but he had bad eye sight. Literally one of many who helped make us a true power and world class, but not good enough, due to “bad” eyesight and being color blind.

The Army found that colorblind guys were actually better at spotting camouflaged German equipment because they focused more on shape and motion rather than the colors they couldn't see.

The reason for the 100% reliability rate requirement on the proximity fuse was because they were paranoid of a dud being captured and copied . It is also why, even after being released for use, those rounds initially were only allowed for AA use from ships and in England to shoot down V1s. It was not until the Battle of the Bulge that the were authorized for ground air burst use against the Germans. The requirement was way to stringent though and I hate to image what our losses to kamikaze attacks would have been without that miracle weapon being used.

My grandpa told me that during his FIRST basic training (1st time was during World War 2, then the second was in 1948 after he managed to lie convincingly enough whilst being drunk to the Soviets that he did not serve during the war) he scored enough to be sent to sniper school. The problem was my grandpa's glasses were like a third of an inch thick even back then. His drill instructor asked him how the hell can he shoot his rifle that well and my grandpa told him that just because the target is a blur to him that doesn't mean he can't target into the middle of said blur. Then my grandpa added that whether the target is friend or foe is a different question. He remained a rifleman. XD

28:35 I'm just gonna come in here and say the BoO was actually in the right for this. The reason they had such a high standard is because they didn't want any duds that the enemy could take. This was literally a golden goose egg and if the Axis got it and reverse engineered it the US and UK bombing missions would be all but obsolete, so they wanted to be 110% sure no shells would be faulty and not detonate when they needed to. Lee convinced them that using them over water would mean they couldn't be picked up by the Japanese. It still took a few more years before the Army was given them but that was because at that point the German industrial base was destroyed enough they believed they couldn't reverse engineer the shells fast enough for it to matter.

Also for those who don’t know, one reason why this was the last BB duel. No one else actually made BB’s, not true ones, but us and the Brit’s, the haps made super heavies, the krauts made pocket BB’s, not real ones, except the Bismarck, but that ship fleet out sucked on all ways but armor scheme. Everything else was literally garbage for naval combat. Plus both were terrified of the Iowa class and actively ran from them, we literally spent a good chunk of the war, trying to find and chase them down to get into BB duels. And ll both did was run from them, as tech was close enough, so was speed they could out run them, with enough warning they were coming. And all they did was run from us, that’s why aircraft ultimately did the ost damage/ sank or led to the sinking of the Yamato and Bismarck as they could barely out run ours and the British ships. Over extremely long ranges, with enough warning/decent planning, they all ran like the cowards they are. They refused to fight the Iowa’s, especially.

This was the second to last battleship action of WW2. The battle of Surigao Strait in Oct. '44 was the last time battleships fired on one another. I'll omit the details so if you do a video on it in the future I won't be spoiling, but it does coincide with USS Johnston f*cking with Yamato. XD Sidenote: Kirishima was supposedly "upgraded" to battleship standards during the '30s; however, her belt armor and main battery were never upgraded to modern standards, leaving many to still consider her a battlecruiser all the same. It should really go without saying, battleships versus battlecruisers doesn't tend to end well for the latter.

Oh right … if you want an in depth story of the night battle for the Washington and South Dakota drach has a good video on it too. South Dakota loses power after first salvo and then kirashima starts closing in to make the kill. Lee then moves up the Washington to within 7 thousand yards, essentially bayonet range for battleships, and blows the kirashima apart

I cant wait for everyone to notice that the way America does there math is a "to date" on % loss or reliability. For referance the majority of torpedoes were fired pre-fixed torpedo on the Mk14, durring the last year of the conflict the Mk14 had a success detonation on target rait of 90%. Due to war time % the Mark 14 success rait based on torpedoes fired put the successful torpedo attacks to only 14.9% (they rounded up because the report was going to another paper for 1 word if they left the 9 in there). Realistically the issue was the fact it was a 56 to 1 ratio of torpedoes doing anything till 44, durring 44 (August roughly), torpedoes were fixed and required a LOT less ammunition spendage and kill ratios of submarines skyrocketed. Till this time Submarines only sank 8 japanese warships with torpedoes but they fired over 900 torpedoes to do it. After that upgrade the ratio was 1 dud to every 10 (Most subs only have 6 launchers so it was a considerable thing to bring that number that low suddenly) and most enguagements with torpedoes were then decided by range as they were the lowest ranged torpedoes of the war as well, meaning that if you were not within its range the torpedoes suffered poor range and would sink doing nothing. This lead to the wolfpack concept, problem was nobody was able to fix this doctrinal change to be propper till 3 weeks before the end of WW2 You can look into reports from Japan as they thought it was a moral boost that American Submarines were launching logs at the Japanese ships from 1942 - (early)1944 lol

Also a few problems woth this video. One. Our BB’s always had. At least one main gun facing aft, sure by the time of fast of BB’s which are Iowa class, as everything before was standard. Aka 24 kt speed, or worse/slower, down to the dreadnoughts. They can bring one triple turret to bear, to the rear, as it is literally aft mounted. And only a tiny amount of 5” turrets would be able to engage an enemy ship, based on range and bearing. Also the navy got their ass kicked, let lost of our ammo, food, and water/tp be sunk in harbor, then ran away at Guadalcanal. And abandoned us Marines to lose and die. But that’s not how we roll. Didn’t work, though they tired to kills us, that way, even if only by sucking at life. We never failed to take an island, they failed on multiple occasions to win a battle. They shoulda outright won. With a few exceptions, all after abandoning us at wake island. Like the cowards they are, along with the government, reusing to even attempt to resupply not even fight. Yeah the navy and the government wouldn’t even resupply US Marines, holding the line, what’s worse. They didn’t even try. Once, not that they tried and failed and got sunk, they straight up said no, even after we wind the first few battles of wake, and no wasn’t only 2 battles for the island. Were many/constant fighting for weeks. Of air. Naval and land battles. So much so, that we, Marines had to resort to scavenging enemy food and weapons and munitions, and using those. Living off that, fighting with that in many cases, as we had zero resupply, and no option as all the cowards left us to die. Just like later in many cases, including Guadalcanal.

Also according to nick. He commanded fast BB’s, aka the Iowa class, their primary shells for fighting other BB’s was 16” super heavy AP, which performed as well at 18” AP, cause America, we turn 16” shells into 18” shells. While still being 16” shells. So, why is he shooting 1700 something pound. High Capacity (HC) He shells at another BB? No, that requires AP, he woulda got the job done in half or less of AP. Anyone who doubts me. Of what nick says is true. Look up the size of 16” HC, vs the weight of 16” super heavy AP…the AP is like 1000 lbs heavier of steel, per shell.

You've got a few mistakes, but I'm just pointing them out; not trying to attack you or anything. 1. "Fast Battleships aka Iowa's" - While certainly the fastest, the Iowa-Class were not the "Only" US class of Fast Battleships; in fact there were 3. In order there were the preceding 2 North Carolina-Class (28kts), 4 South Dakota-Class (27.5kts), and as you mentioned the 4 Iowa-Class (33kts) BB's; ALL of which were considered "Fast BB's" by the US and foreign governments. "Fast Battleships" really just means any BB faster than the usual WWI Era Super-Dreadnoughts, while retaining the full firepower and protection of a true BB, and not having to make the sacrifices used by Battlecruisers to make their speeds possible. There's also a line in the sand for US BB's as all previous Battleships were "Standard-Type" meaning while 5 different "Standard" classes existed they all kept key standard performance characteristics so they'd all seamlessly integrate with eachother into a "Line of Battle" as they were designed for and when when BB's were still the centerpiece fleet units for Naval warfare, these were a top speed of 21kts and a tactical turning radius of 700yds. It wasn't until Admiral Lee concluded that Aircraft Carriers were the new centerpieces of the fleet that USN BB's were designed to be faster so they could keep up and better escort the new Fleet Carriers which had a speed of 33kts. A most excellent history fact highlighting this is the fact that Lee's own ship mentioned in the Video, USS Washington, was in fact a North Carolina-Class BB; and the USS South Dakota was as might be implied, a South Dakota-Class BB. 2. US 14" and 16" "Super Heavy" AP shells are special and don't directly translate to how "Powerfull" they are versus another shell, in fact they almost always suffer in comparison to "Standard" AP shells of other navies because in exchange for launching a significantly heavier shell they sacrifice the potential for a higher muzzle velocity, which worsens their belt armor penetration by being slower and they have a smaller amount of explosive filler in exchange for more steel so they can make the shell heavier; "Super Heavy" if you will. The idea behind it is simple, penetration requires ass over mass; a pound of copper is essentially insignificantlly useless when it comes to penetrating Heavily armored Tanks, but have another pound of High Explosive detonate behind it upon impact in a HEAT shell and plasticize that copper to be yeeted in a stream at multiple KILOMETERS per second and suddenly that handful of soft copper punches straight through FEET of Armor grade steel. *HOWEVER* you need mass to "Retain" energy meaning a heavier round , Yeet an Iron and a styrofoam baseball both at 2,000fps and the Iron will not only travel significantly farther but impact with significantly more force than the styrofoam. Same with "Super Heavy" AP shells. Their WHOLE purpose is to attack as "Diving Shells" completely avoiding and negating belt armor to instead steeply "dive" at the end of their Ballistic arc right through the far weaker Deck armor of all ships, which signifies their purpose and reasoning for their design features. By being "Super Heavy" they'll have a greater Ballistic arc increasing the chance they'll have shells punching through weaker deck armor in any engagement, and with their significantly heavier weight, not only have a higher speed in a dive but impact with MUCH more energy/force resulting in significantly more penetration as well. In this regard the Iowa's are actually technically *Worse* due to the fact their 16"/50's have a higher velocity and thus shallower ballistic arc than the 16"/45's, resulting in them hitting at a much steeper angle reducing not only their deck penetration, but increasing the likelihood of hitting the belt armor, ricocheting off the deck, or over-shooting the ship entirely instead. However, yes, the Iowa's 16" guns are better than the Yamato or Musashi's 18.1". Not only do the Iowa's 406mm guns actually have more penetration than the IJN's "Amazing" 460mm due to the 18.1" having a lower velocity because of its larger size and weight, but the Iowa can sit right in the dark or a rain squall and rain a fusilade of radar guided "Super Heavy" shells from the heavens straight through the deck armor of any Yamato-Class BB without ever even being seen and completely bypassing all of their belt armor; all while having a much better rate of fire (One of the key reasons the US never adopted an 18" gun despite having numerous BB/CB design proposals for them and multiple experimental/prototype guns for testing, was 16" was the largest gun size viable before you got diminishing returns and significant drawbacks for relatively little gain. As the US proved, you got better performance by improving the guns and ammunition of the 16" than up-gunning to 18-18.1". Meanwhile the 18.1" took a noticeable hit to reload speed due to weight, lower ammunition capacity due to larger shells and powder bags, a larger and heavier ship due to larger heavier guns which also nessecicate larger heavier turrets, etc). 3. Nick does get things wrong and even he admits he does, I don't consider him giving the wrong shell weight in this video to be a big one; especially since he never claimed they were shooting High Capacity (HE for the layperson). My guess is he looked up or googled "weight of US 16" shells" or "how much do US 16" shells weigh?" and got 1,700lbs without the answer disclaiming that was for HC shells only, or that AP shells were SIGNIFICANTLY heavier at 2,700lbs. Considering most people would be asking in reference to shore Bombardment wondering how destructive broadsides of BB HE would be as artillery like when commonly used for friendlies and engaging hostile targets/fortifications/troop formations ashore, which is where most people would be wondering with more people interested in the land battles as opposed to those of us interested in Naval/ship-to-ship warfare as well; increasing the likelihood the result he'd get from the search algorithms would be defaulted to an answer for the HC shells.

And I will say Mr Lee was wrong in one situations we shoulda belt all those cruisers, cause big naval guns are awesome and cool, but he also should got the fund and resources to make just as many fleet and escort carriers as he did anyways, the only difference is we woulda 10 more, baller. Almost BB sized ships, absolutely covered in guns to fight with on top of that, before anyone cries, oh we couldn’t do or afford that, piss off, yes we could, they didn’t try hard enough, we willingly let 10’s of millions of tons of equipment. Munitions, fuel, tea amterials and finished/canned food be sunk, because we couldn’t afford to let the Germans know we broke their code. As the Allie’s and stole an active enigma and cipher also. We could afford 10 of the most baller cruisers ever made, easily that woulda been a tiny fraction of what we wasted, to keep up the illusion we couldn’t break or understand the Germans super secret code for years. So saying we couldn’t. Is a flat out lie, and cop out, look those dirty commies didn’t need rail cars, tanks. Rifles. Ammo, artillery. Planes. More munitions, ships, fuel in all forms, oil in all forms. Hundreds of locomotive engines.blankets. Warm clothes, dirty Soviets didn’t need or deserve any of that, look at what they did and caused, they shoulda got zero of that. We shoulda used it and gave to the Brit’s and Aussies. Canadians instead. And those mad, glorious bastards the Finns.
