Very good comparison, as always. As for me, I will stay with my Mk2, because in my view the differences in features do not match the differences in prices. The price/quality ratio of the Mk2 is unparalleled. And, as Olympus is building its cameras like tanks (thank you Olympus!), they can stay with us for years!

Recently returned from a 2 week safari to Botswana with my EM1X and OMD M1 mark ii. I really found the larger body of the M1X was more comfortable for me in the the field shooting from a safari vehicle. I did not find the increase weight difficult and like the balance with the M Zuiko 300 f4 lens. I also find the joy stick on the M1X and the my menu very helpful and comfortable .
@philipswan1016
@philipswan1016 4 года назад
Just watching this evening after picking up my Em1X today. i went with the bigger option as i plan on using the larger zoom lens for sports & wildlife and figured it would be better balanced on the bigger body. Also i felt the smaller bodies did'n't give enough grip when holding with one hand. the X is very similar in size & weight to my old Canon. I think if someone is not into sports or wildlife, then definitely do with the Marki iii. I will probably get one later on for the days I am not shooting long. One worry i had before buying the camera was the noise & dept of field that everyone goes on about, if anyone else has those worries don't , I've been testing most of the evening indoors without flash and even the dimmed rooms are not a problem. I was hoping the X would win, to me it has, Anyway Peter maybe review the new firmware upgrade in your next video for the X.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 4 года назад
The reason that E-m1 MKIII won is that it suits for me better than the X. But the things you shoot, I think you are better of with the X.

@@ForsgardPeter Two fast cardslots and the bigger viewfinder is better for fast birdphoto. I shooting raw to both and if one them is slow as in em1 it would make a differens for the buffer. And the balance whit the 300f4 is perfekt. I used the em1x for a year and its soooooo good :) before I had em1mkII and Canon 7Dmkll.

Thanks for doing the comparison. Interesting your find of perhaps 1 stop better in noise with the jpg. Looking forward to your comparison with RAW files. I was able to open some em-1 mkiii RAW test files no problem with previous version of ON1, and did see benefits there as well, but my source for mkii files for comparison may have been prior to firmware upgrade. Regardless, with noise being perhaps the most significant concern with m43, I'm happy to see potential improvements with the latest processor. Thanks again.

This last Saturday I left my E-M10 II at home because the weather was persisting with rain. (I used the SH-1 pocket zoom for a radio club field day, because it has fewer buttons for the rain to get in.) For size, the E-M1 III with 14-150 lens is a better fit for me. One lens instead of my 2 kit lenses on the E-M10 II. But for price, it might be easier to get the E-M1 II past Sandra.

Hi, Peter! Thanks for the video! I use a E-M1 Mark 1 and want to do a upgrade to a newer E-M1. What counts for me is a better Eye-AF than in E-M1 since I do a lot of portraits and a better low ISO performance (E-M1 Mark 1 high ISO and postprocessing --> bringing up the shadows results in horrible colours). How do you rate the difference between E-M1 Mark 2 to Mark 3 with respect to (Eye)AF performance? Is the improvement in that respect from E-M1 Mark 1 to Mark 2 a bigger step as from Mark 2 to Mark 3? Another point that is important for me since some weeks is that I will get the Pro 17mm 1.2 free of charge with the E-M1 Mark 2 and that is also a big advantage going for the Mark 2. What do you think?
@ForsgardPeter

Only the "My Menu" upgrade, and possibly the addition of a joystick are attractive to me. I concur with you that the value leader remains the MkII and I will not upgrade simply to gain those few new features. I also shoot with Canon equipment, and the latest mirrorless camera I own from them (RP) allows one to build multiple custom pages of menus at will. I think Olympus was smart to add this feature, particularly with all the customization options these cameras contain, which can be somewhat confusing to new users.

It is a very helpful explanation of the differences ! I wonder if the comparison of IBIS performance is complete; For instance I think em2 with 12-100 is up to 6.5; And if there is one issue that makes me take the step to the em3 it is the better IBIS; Making photo's with little light and without tripod, even with higher f values is unbelievable !! And in that respect less noise is nice......

I decided on the EM1-X because I love the second shutter in portrait-mode and the 2nd joystick. (The available battery grip for the M1.II/M1.III does not come with this additional joystick). And yes, the EM1-X is bigger than the others, but I upgraded from the dinosaur E-5 (NOT the OMD-EM5!) with a battery grip and so I am well trained to carry heavy equipment. :) And, in my personal opinion, the E-M1X matches better in my hand, it feels "better".

It is 2024 but I am adding a comment anyway. I just got an EM1.3 and an EM1X. I will be keeping my Canon 6Ds but sold my Canon R series cameras and small Lumix M4/3 cameras. This second, (third?) attempt at mirrorless is driven by theater photography where mirrorless has so many advantages. I love the EM1X for easy switch to portait mode, endless battery life and general comfort. I have also shot an airshow, waterfalls and landscape. The EM1.3 is also good but the biggest problem is Olympus menus. Twice, the EM1.3 has gotten into some mode during a live performance where it will not respond to focus, aperture input and even the power switch. That is one resson I have two bodies, for backup. But unless I can diagnose the problem, I will have to replace it. One thing I learned in this video is the superior ISO performance of the EM1.3!

A difficult one. I have the em1.2 and was looking to buy perhaps an EM1X with a cash-back... but the main features of the EM1X are now on the EM1.3 and I have a grip that I can re-use on the EM1.3 when using bigger lenses. So I just wait a little and see what discounts will pop up during the Olympics (expecting some promotions round that event from all sort of companies). I think that Olympus should come up with a firmware upgrade for the EM1X to include starry sky AF and some extra AF tracking modes next to the current ones (like birds in flight). Otherwise the differences will be small to most people, unless you really need the dual UHS-II slots and some of the additional sensors. For most: I think you are right that the EM1.3 is the winner: small, true to the MFT size and the differences with the EM1X are for most people not interesting enough to spend the extra money.

I know the initial price is high but I’ve got a good part ex quote, I think I could wait for the mkiii price to drop but the market would also be awash with mkii’s so I would get even less for my mkii and the price differential would be more then than I’m paying now.(hopefully ). For me the EM1X is way too big, the reason I got my Olympus was to get away from the mill stone DSLR’s offered by Canon & Nikon. If I needed the EM1X grip I probably would just add the battery pack to a mkii or mkiii at much less cost.

Interesting comparison. I'm still more interested in the EM1X but that is because I want a dedicated bird photography camera paired with a fixed telephoto prime, e.g. 300/4. I like the handling of the EM1X. My chief concern is image quality at higher iso. In bird photography you can often be working at iso2000 and iso3200, so that concerns me. However, I am now a convert to Topaz DeNoise AI, so again it may be my worries about high-iso noise are less concerning.

E-M1 MarkII is just on offer [end May/early June 2021] with the 12-40 Pro and 30mm Macro for £1100 all in, direct from Olympus store. Even though it is an older model, this makes it really superb value in the UK. In local stores the body plus 12-40 retails for £1700 plus £229 for the 30mm. So there's nearly a £900 price drop. Not sure if a local store can price match.

Agree, M1X is too expensive for what it offers and the size is a no-go for a m43 sensor. If I am willing to carry a bigger camera I still prefer full-format cameras for their better dynamic range for landscape. But for night shots or low light conditions (church, ...) the Olympus m43 are a joy to use for their fantastic IBIS and otherwise a good choice for their small system size and weight.

Good comparison thanks Peter - my most used special function is focus stacking (model railway and aircraft scenes). My main photography is birds and aviation, I will add an EM1 Mk111 to the existing EM1 Mk11. The EM1X is way too expensive and bulky. I am phasing out my Nikon kit but for the cost of an EM1X body I could buy a Nikon D500 with 200-500mm lens which still has better AF on moving subjects than the Olympus. The later firmware for the EM1 Mk11 has certainly improved the AF tracking and am getting higher success rates with birds in flight. From all accounts the EM1 111 should be better again.

That said I want to point out it is hard for Olympus (and other manufacturers) to convince the potential buyers because the "older" camera models are still very good and capable. Revolutionary sensor or other improvements are not to be expected in the nearer future as Olympus has presented the flagship models recently. So let´s get a better photographer meanwhile and this will be easier as it is for Olympus to create a must-have camera for all of us in the following years ;-)

On the customization point, the X has more assignable buttons (due to its size), and you can assign any or all of the C 1,2,3,4 modes to buttons, which is extremely useful. Did they add that C button assignment capability to the 1.3? Can’t do it on the 1.2. The new decluttered display option for the SCP on the 1.3 is nice. hoping they could add that to the X and 1.2 firmware. I'm happy with the X but could see switching out the 1.2 for 1.3 in the future, especially if they fall behind on firmware upgrades.

I enjoy your ‘boring’ dry humor, Peter. Well done. I own the E-M1X and a couple E-M1.2 so I was curious to see how you rated them in a face off with one another. I pretty much agree. Actually, all the Olympus OM-D cameras can pretty much AF on stars at ISO12,800 to 25,600 with the pro lenses, using a hand holdable 1 sec shutter speed in order to set the focus if for some reason PreMF at infinity or setting the lens to infinity by pressing the lens release button doesn’t put the lens at perfect focus on the stars. I pretty much can set any lens on my Olympus to sharpest stars in about 5 seconds using that technique and then just dial back the ISO to my choice for the actual images. Other than that, the HHHR and LiveND are really great features to have and I toy with the crazy idea of, rather than upgrading the E-M1.2 bodies to E-M1.3, just trade the E-M1X for an E-M1.3. Of course, without the E-M1X, I give up some self defense weapon capabilities, haha, but I could run away faster without the weight! :-D

@JeffreyMcPheeters
@JeffreyMcPheeters 4 года назад
Peter Forsgård I’m sure I probably got the idea from someplace once but don’t remember. I’ve been using it for a few years quite successfully though the fluidity has been developed over time, having the digital teleconverter handy or zoom in at 14x on a star after setting PreMF. All my cameras have a custom setting for landscape where the lever switches between SAF+M and PreMF set to 999.9 meters so it goes to infinity. OR I also can press the len release button while I’m aiming at a particular star or deep space object and when it comes back into view at infinity I have the focus set to both peak and zoom so I instantly get verification of focus sharpness. Anyway, as you know, zoom lenses don’t generally go to infinity exactly especially at the telephoto end and they tend to overshoot just enough that pulling back focus just slightly will bring stars into perfect sharpness but again, Starry AF is a great feature and removes one more set of challenges. However, when starting a long series of exposures or timelapses, we still would want to verify focus rather than trust any automatic feature and possibly waste many minutes or even hours of shooting time only to get something not quite as sharp as it could have been. Starry AF makes quick takes much more likely and I think many folks will feel more confidence in trying their luck with night sky photographs so hats off to Olympus for simplifying a sometimes tedious or difficult process and as you always remind us, making photography fun. For me, Olympus brought the fun back and I’m forever grateful.

Peter, I appreciate-your impartiality in the comparisons. Little to choose between the cameras. I do however eagerly await the raw file comparisons, equally I would love to see some bird in flight comparisons. I have contacted Olympus and suggested it is high time for a new sensor. I suspect the EM1X MK II will have one - surely!! I know four thirds will not compete with full frame at ISO 8000 upwards and as far as I can see it doesn't from ISO 400 either but that is not to say good results are unobtainable. But I think many people would agree the current sensor is woefully outdated in terms of noise generation. I bought EM1X last year, it is a super camera and so portable but on dull winter days I feel it is not of any use to me for natural history. If anyone would disagree and say what about something else? Well landscape for example I would say it is fine. I await a few ruffled feathers perhaps??

@@catrionathomson8981 Hi Catriona, the reason is noise. I went to Finland to photograph the brown bears, this was before I converted to Olympus, I used a Canon 1DX and 500m f4 with 1.4TC. The light wasn't good I started at ISO 4000 and went onto ISO 32000, now if I had the EM1X or any other 4/3 Olympus the noise would have been objectionable. Here at home in UK I like to photograph short eared owls from November though April, again light isn't always good so if I have to go to ISO 4000 upwards again noise is objectionable. If I shoot action in nature I need 1/1600 second - minimum and in many cases faster, tis often results in a high ISO requirement. Don't misunderstand I have enjoyed the EM1X and when I cant use it for nature/action in low light the answer is either don't photograph or photograph something else. There is lots to do with the EM1X - high definition and neutral density - just not possible with Canon SLR. For me the BIG limitation so far is that I simply cannot get acceptable results at high ISO. have used Topaz and Neat Image and of course LR and ACR, it helps but once you get above ISO 4000 not much good -and doubly so if I have to crop,....... crop and high ISO = No No!

I have two E-M1X and two E-M1 Mk II. I plan on trading in my two E-M1 Mk II and pick up an E-M1 Mk III. The reason for getting the Mk III is the better face-eye detection and the joystick. Having said that I doubt that the Mk III will replace my 1X. I'm a charity event photographer. Two of my annual events is covering the endpoint at bike-a-thons. I have about 3,500 bicycle riders coming in a six-hour time frame on bike-a-thon 1 and 2,000 bicycle riders coming in the same six-hour time frame. 2017 I had an E-M1 Mk II overheat and shut down after 90 minutes and some 3,500 shots in 85 degrees Farheint weather. I pulled out the second E-M1 Mk II to shoot another 1750 pictures in a 45 minutes time frame. At that point, the camera that overheated and shut down was now operable. I had to break off at the endpoint and cover the survivor ceremony (cancer event). In 2018 I was strictly covering the finish line. I ended up getting a Nikon D500 to cover the assignment, shot 15,500 pictures in the six-hour timeframe. I bought the E-M1X based strictly based on the heat sink. I ended up shooting 23,500 shots during that six-hour time frame with no problems. Unloaded the rest of my Nikon gear for a second E-M1X. I sincerely doubt that the Mk III will be able to cover the finish line activities in its entirety without overheating. Another strike against the Mk III is not having dual UHS-II slots. For these bike-a-thons I will fill close to five 128 GB memory cards, so so the second slot is set up for overflow. Seeing that I'm not going to use a grip on the Mk III I'm going to have more frequent battery change-outs. I have an extra battery sled for the 1X so changing batteries is fast. I will go through four batteries. I'm debating whether I even to want to try and use the Mk III at the finish line. Time will tell if the Mk III is up to the task covering the finish line in its entirety. The particular event is Philly ACS Bike-a-thon, and the pictures are at www.brianric.com.
