This is fun. Seeing you go through the same endless yammering that each of us goes through when it comes time to upgrade. I have the E-M1MkII and bought the E-M1X. I shoot mostly birds, but keep trying to branch out to other subjects. At first, i thought the X was too heavy to drag around everywhere in the field, but the more i used it, the more i came to enjoy the ergonomics of it over the MkII. Now that bird AI is finally here, i am glad i have adjusted to the size in the field. When the X was introduced, i thought - no way, misses the point of smaller and lighter, but i admit, i really like it.

I had the same thoughts about X when it was released. I did have a chance to test it again in November and I liked it. That is why I started to think about this.

@@ForsgardPeter I need a camera for my Zhiyun Weebill 2 Pro+ Gimbal, the Mk ii and the Mk iii are both compatible with my gimbal, I suspect the X is too. Chasing people outdoors I would consider wildlife photography. Anybody out there with any input ? Thanks for your efforts Peter 😁 ps I buy 2nd hand with low shutter counts, clearly owned by, and looked after, a genuine photographer.

All the differences you have mentioned are important. For me there are some other points also very interesting. I think the photo qualitiy with the 1/3 is better, and in low light situations the noise is less and it is more easy to reduce the noise (I think this is a advantage of the new processor in the 1/3. You said, the focus-system in the 1X is more modern and I add, that the focus-system in the 1/X is much faster, a big point when photographically hunting birds. Another advantage I experienced, when I took photos of Neowise the comet. I could not see it with my eye, but when I activated starry-focus on my 1/3 I got a magnifecent view of Neowise and made a lot of photos...... and also a point is the weight, since I am not so young anymore, I get tired when shooting with the more heavy 1/X. Wish you all Happy Hollydays and much more important a lot of health!!!!! Best wishes Peter from Vienna, Austria

Good video summarizing the differences between to two great cameras. I am lucky enough to own both. I love the ergonomics and the larger magnification of the EVF on the E-M1X. I do photograph birds a lot and for this type of photography I use the E-M1X. I love the Starry Sky and the Face/eye detection plus the smaller camera size in the E-M1 MkIII. It is a real tough choice. I am lucky enough to own both.

I appreciate the realness of the review. Now two years after this review I’m looking at the M1X as it is a steal. It replaces a Panasonic G9 that has been the best camera I’ve owned. Looking forward to the even more robust M1X

The E-M1X has one role, to make the most of compact telephoto lenses in micro four thirds format photography. For more modest focal lengths, you may as well go for a full frame camera which will be no bigger, or enjoy the compactness of the E-M1 MkIII. The 1X is a wildlife camera.

Hi Peter I just upgraded from the EM1 mark 2 to the M1 X because of the bird recognition software however what I did like about the em1 mk2 was that when I went birding I will have the grip on to give me that extra Stability with the f4 lens. However when I was just photographing on holiday or doing landscapes then the grip come off and I liked the small portability of the em1 mk2 camera this I miss. I have now been out with the new camera to photograph birds and So far I haven’t really noticed that much difference between the two cameras even with a new recognition software I think I just need more time on the camera?

I had an E-M5 II with the two-part vertical grip, and there was some flex between all those connections when it was on a tripod. I switched to the E-M1 II and the single-piece grip was fewer connections so it was more stable. The E-M1X would be perfect! I also like that it gives you a joystick in the vertical position, that the E-M1 III doesn't have because it re-uses the E-M1 II grip.

I wanted the E-M1X for the subject detection (bird AF). However, I found the size of the body was the thing that made me choose the E-M1 MKIII. I have to work a little harder when photographing birds, but I can live with that. I also enjoy the Starry Sky AF, which, as you say, is a lot of fun. As you say your professional work involves a lot of portrait work, I would have thought the better AF in the MKIII would be a decision maker for you. But you also say you prefer the ergonomics of the M1X. All in all, I'm very happy with my MKIII. It does everything I need (and a whole lot more), but it's down to personal preference. From your video, I think that the ease of use of the M1X with the dual joysticks may make that the one you end up buying. Either way, you will have a superb tool for your work and leisure.

In October, thinking of upgrading from EM5 mk 3. Doing research on EM1X and EM1 MK3. I have always added the grip to cameras, so I was looking at Em1x, but would I like to have the grip all the time. With the price, EM1 mk 3 would be higher in price with the grip. About £150 different. I was given a wispa that Em1x was on the November black friday list. So waited to see what price drop would come. The price did drop by £150 pounds. So I did get the Em1x and am very happy with it, still learning the system, got help with the 650 plus page maunel. I am more into animals and landscape photography, with a little into portrait. Peter have a lovely holiday season with family and stay safe.

I have the MK3 and LOVE it! I mainly shoot studio stuff--product/furniture with it. But I recently started doing some bird photography and that bird AF on the EM1-X looks amazing! So of course, now I'm wishing I had the EM1-X. I wonder if there is any chance of bird AF coming to the MK3? BTW, loved your review of the 150-400. Thanks for all the great content and stay safe!

I have both the EM1 Mark III and the E-MX1. I got the Mark III first and really like all of its features, the size and how easy it is to carry in my hand even with the 100mm-400mm lens attached. I had no intention of getting the E-MX1. But when Olympus dropped the price by $1000 and gave an extra $300 for just requesting a quote on selling old Olympus gear, I decided to get the E-M1X (add to that the Payboo card from B&H saving the tax). I find the E-M1X a great camera to handle, While I can shoot with the E-MX1 hand held it is bulkier and heavier than the Mark III so walking around with it is not as comfortable carry in my hand. I solved this by using the PD Slide strap. Since I often shoot birds on my trail walks the Bird Tracking is excellent. I found it will even find the eye of a deer, I have pre-ordered the 150-400mm lens and that should be a perfect for the E-MX1.

I rented both EM1X the em1 iii to test the waters when I was thinking of jumping ship from Nikon after over 25 years. I loved them both but ultimately bought the EM1X because I like the way it felt better in my (large) hands. After the firmware upgrade the only thing I feel I’m lacking is the starry AF from the 1 iii as I am a landscape and Astro photographer more than I am a portrait photographer. I hope they add that in a firmware update in the future or make a mark ii of the EM1X that has it all. I’ve since sold off almost all my Nikon gear but will be selling that off soon too now that I’ve gotten more used to the OM-D system and to help finance the new 150-400 coming out next month for my wildlife photography

Among the several Olympus bodies that I am fortunate enough to possess, I have the original Em1 w/ a battery grip. I absolutely love it because the ergonomics are just so fun and based on that, I decided to try the Em1X thinking it’d be about the same size...no, sir. It is massive, it made me feel like I was back to using my Nikon D800E so I went with the Em1 Mark III and I am absolutely ecstatic that I did. I was a bit fussy when Bird AF was not introduced in the 1.3 but the AF is still good enough that I have no complaints. Em1 Mark III is just a fun little devil which has virtually all the capabilities of the Em1X and then some.

I have the EM1 Mark III with adding grip and the 100-400mm and the teleconverter MC 20 wich is really great for birds photography. I think the EM1 Mark III is the best compromise between the 2 camera.

I went with the III earlier this year, and have benefitted from the handheld hi-res (also in the X) and starry sky autofocus. Technically, it is probably possible for either camera to get the features of the other one via firmware upgrades. Whether or not it will happen, and when, is another matter. I went through the same process before I bought the em1 mkIII with the optional grip. Because I don’t have a spare camera, I wanted something smaller if I needed it. The grip is a good compromise for bigger lens to make the camera more balanced. If I had a spare, I might have gone for the m1x. Just to get the best of both worlds. I found the mkIII with grip a little too big for quick urban shooting with small lens. I’m sure I’d get used to the m1x at some point. It’s a tough decision but it’s fun to shop for a new camera. If your usual photo bag can allow for the bigger one or not is part of the answer. For others, package offered (12-40 as kit at a faire price) can make the difference also. But, if you're OK with your mark2, maybe wait a little bit of time to see the next firmware wave and see what differences are then (and prices would be lower then)

I bought the E-M1.iii this spring: my main reason at that time was (i) the price (the E-M1x was considerably more expensive then), and (ii) the size (I walk long trips, like 30-40 km carrying the gear). In general, I think there should be a marked improvement in order to upgrade. I'm quite happy with the E-M1.iii, in particular wrt. a slight improvement in IBIS, and the face/eye detection. But the camera is slightly small -- my pinkie slides off the grip. Although I'm not in the market for the 150-400, I think the E-M1x would be "necessary" to take full advantage of that lens. -- For professionals who mainly transport their gear by car, the size of the E-M1x is no big deal. You have longer battery time with two batteries. The only downside may be the lack of face/eye detection. But if that was not a huge problem on the E-M1.ii, then I think the E-M1x would be fine.

I'm fortunate to own one of each: I use my EM1X for birds and mammals and my EM1 mark III for macro - generally speaking. The EM1X is certainly more comfortable to hold in combination with my 300mm f4, but the EM1.3 is fine with my PL 200mm f2.8 and great with my 14 - 150mm f3.5 - 5.6 II and 60mm f2.8 macro. I certainly consider my EM1X to be my primary camera, but my EM1.3 is better for the occasional informal portraits I take of my family at parties - especially when used with my Meike 320P minispeedlite.

Hi Peter, I’ve been an. Olympus fan for Years - going back to Om4 and before. I bought E-M1MKll and enjoyed using it. However, some times when out and about and trying to get those “In the moment,” shots I got hung up on the controls. Maybe I’m clumsy! But of course I loved the compactness. Although battery charging minus USB was a hassle. When the E-M1X came along I went also to have a look - the moment I picked it up it fitted like a glove! Sure, it’s a bit heavier, ( And I miss the compactness) but it works for me. Battery life good, charge on the hoof, whatever the lens or whatever the shot, portrait or landscape, it’s there. I wouldn’t be surprised if face priority becomes available. After all, both models are unique in their own way? For me the X is better overall -

I have both the EM1x and the EM1 mk3 and quite simply for me it is to do with what I am wanting to photograph on the day as to what I carry. For general walkaround daily camera I use the Mk3 with the 12-100mm F4 pro. For all wildlife and especially Bird photography I use the 1x with the 300mm F4 pro + 1.4x tele. Most day's I have both setups in the bag in the bag to cover everything but I found the balance on the mk3 with the 300mm and 1.4x to be front heavy the 1x is actually very well balanced with this combo. Also the twin battery built in grip is brilliant on the 1x as I usually have the camera on more when doing wildlife. Also the 2 x UHS2 card slots is also an advantage for fast shooting on the 1x.

Asked myself the same question (own an e-M1MkII too (currently under overhaul shortly before end of extended warranty) - and went for the E-M1X, as you mentioned the price is more reasonable now, and 'Black Week' offers gave me an additional discount of 10%, so this camera for EUR 1,800 was a 'bargain' taking into consideration the features (and dual-processor performance - although the 'old one') - and hoping that the additional face detection feature currently only in the 1MkIII will be implemented in firmare for the E-M1X one day soon ... ;-)

The Em1 mk3 and Em1x are pretty much the same price now and I went through the same decision process. I ended up with the EM1X. The slightly larger size worked better in my large hands and when out and about in the field the extra battery was another deciding factor. Lastly the bird AF was more useful than I thought it would be particularly for those tiny little buggers.

Dear Peter. I have many cameras - Sony, Fuji, Samsung, and Panasonic GX85. It turns out that I get the best videos from my low-cost Lumix GX85 in 4K and/or 12-35 2.4 or Lumix/Leica 15 mm/1.7. Even Sony's a7S full-frame does not come close. OIS, 4K, and/or MFT or something else makes the video and colors special. I realize that Lumix GX85 is an old and inexpensive camera with 16 MB sensor. Is there anything in Olympus line (not professional - I use it to take videos of my grandkids) that MAY improve upon GX85. May be 20 MB new sensors, num-cropped 4K ? Better OIS?. Thanks

I'm a list maker because it helps me to sort my thoughts out better. I list what I subjects I shoot the most right now, what I want to try shooting for fun and what I might need that I don't have for that new subject. I also list if there are any things that might help me shoot my current subjects easier/better. When I've sorted out what I need I then look at what's around to fill those needs. Then if I can, I try to get a hands on feel in a shop. That's the most important step really. It doesn't matter what it looks like on paper. If it feels like crap in my hands I won't buy it. At the end of the day, people shoot great images with every camera brand out there, with all different sensor sizes and mp amounts, so the spec part really doesn't matter once you sort out the basic specs you need. After that you can buy any brand that feels comfortable to use. Ergonomics rule in the end.

I'm planning to buy M1 mkIII because of the smaller size. But not now, i hope for a cheaper prize 2021 or 2022. I'am no pro and no birdshooter so i don't need the big E-M1X. I like my 5 Mark II and don't want to upgrade to the 5 Mark III. Why i wan't a E-M1 MKIII over my 5 Mark II? Because of the handheld High Res Shot, the better image stabilisation, and the ND filter. Again the E-M1X is too big an heavy for me. And Peter. You will choose the right one.

This video is 3 years old but still relavent to me because I recently bought both of these cameras. I got two bodies because when I am working, I usually carry two bodies with different lenses mounted. I really like the EM1X. Even if I move on from M4/3 for work, the EM1X would be a keeper just for fun shooting. But results have been very good, so far. However, even though the EM1.3 is a good tool, I just cannot warm up to it.

If cameras are similar, size and versatility should be your deciding factor. With the Mkiii you have the option of battery grip or not for size and if you use large lenses you can put the grip on. This option you don’t have with the Em1x.

Greetings from southern Indiana, USA! I had the em 5 mk ii with grip and power pack as a backup. I never really liked the power pack. I don't take that many portrait shots that the power pack is beneficial. I didn't like the weight. Eventually, I got rid of the em5 and upgraded to an em1 mk2 (or 3 - never can keep those numbers straight!) But now the newer camera and backup use the same batteries, so it is one less charger to use. And bringing along an extra battery in my bag is very light. For me to stop and replace a battery isn't that big a deal. YOUR photography, however, may be more demanding where you don't want to change batteries while on the job.

I had the choice between M1-II and M1-X (when the X has been 1000 EUR more expensive) and took the X, just because it feels so much better in the hands, has a portrait-shutter, and 2 joysticks. Even the m1-III with battery grip does not provide the 2nd joystick. In my opinion, M1-X is the better option. I love my M1X.

Peter; many Olympus users switched to Micro 4//3s because of size advantage and the convenience of reduced weight. Based on that there is a significant advantage of the Em1 Mark III in both. Carrying around the extra weight of the E-M1X with its extended camera bulk and required extra battery may not provide you much other than the potential of being able to take pictures of fast birds now and then. Last I checked birds are not paying customers. If it was me I would select the EM1 Mark III. Of course your selection must be on your needs and wants.

The E-M1 MKIII and the E-M1 MKII share the same battery grip (and thus the same battery) so for me the E-M1 MKIII was a no-brainer. So happy I didn’t have to buy a new/different battery grip! I wanted the smaller body anyway (i.e. the grip is removable when desired). Face/Eye detection on the E-M1 MKIII is definitely better - it’s more sensitive (will grab a face when it’s small in the frame) and stickier than the E-M1 MKII. My only complaint is the AF joystick which I don’t need, and the addition of it caused the INFO and MENU buttons to move so I have to remember which camera I’m holding now - I can’t rely on muscle memory to find the INFO button. I got mine for $1399US also. Just need the 8mm fisheye now... gear acquisition never ends.

Had a similar dilemma, but GetOlympus helped when they put a 20% discount on the E-M1x refurbished on cyber Monday. I like using the battery holder on my E-M1 Mk2. I still have the E-M1 original...and have the battery holder on that. The problem with these battery holders is that the battery inside the camera is not easily accessible. You have to remove the holder. Yeah, it's not that hard, but still. I much prefer the battery holder on the E-M1x. I prefer the better weather sealing on the E-M1x. I like the bird detection on the E-M1x. The lens I most use is the 300mm f/4 Pro. Often I use it with the TC20 or TC14. The balance is better with a heavier camera and that lens. For you...maybe a tough call. For me...not so much. I actually like the feel of the E-M1x better than the E-M1 mk2 with battery holder. I haven't tried the mk3 with battery holder, but I'm guessing the E-M1x would win that battle too.

Peter, while we both have almost all the M43 focal lengths we need if I wanted a bigger camera I would be looking at an APSc or small FF like the Sony A7riii, they are somewhere in size between the Mkiii and the EM1x, but the FF sensor would be good for subject isolation and high ISO also the sensor resolution is higher so cropping in for you portrait work would be an advantage. Buying a new camera is always a tuff decision.

Something like a 10 Sequence in "Lens-Test-Videos" like "This is like the Lens looks like a Vlog Lens while walking outside" - I watched your 9-18mm Test 1000x times and I bought it :-) Daniel from Germany. Welcome to club, Peter :-) I went out of the "must have the newest gear" circle - because of YOUR videos. :-) less bodies - more lenses! I bought instead the 300mm/f4 lens and a second Em1ii body. My goal is to master the body blindfold to do animal and model shootings. This already payed off. Yes, I love birds! But the nicest bird shoots were depending more on the moment and the light, less on gear performance. For me, a new body has to wait until the next generation of sensors. (My ideas but finally no answer for doubts of choice)

Peter, I am in almost same position ;) I do have both EM1 mk2 and mk3. Do not get me wrong - mk2 is superb camera but when I am using them both at the same time, mk3 has clearly an edge. AF, Tracking, face recognition it is simply better plus little things like joystick :) all adds up. So, I am thinking to sell my mk2 and get either another mk3 or EM1X. EM1X is ultimate camera :) excellent in almost every aspect just little bit bulky on other hand - vertical grip which makes portrait shooting a breeze plus 2 batteries inside. So tempting ...

I’m shooting RAW to both card slots, and then the E-M1X is still useful when the buffer is full since it still have a high frame rate while the E-M1 halts when the buffer is full because of the slow second card slot. So if you use both card slots and shoot bursts that exceeds the buffer, then E-M1X is the only choise. Nothing is as painful as waiting for the buffer to clear while action is happening and you should be taking pictures.

I just upgraded E-M1 MkII to M1X few days ago and really loving it. My main focuses are animals and some landscaping. Size and weight feels almost same (used MkII with battery grip), ergonomics are very good; portrait grip button alignment actually helps if need to change something, that "cut" on bottom (below the E-M1X text) gives small but useful space for left hand palm/wrist when supporting longer lenses and those joysticks are handy even with gloves. Also those half-inside-body dials feel better. Surprisingly I noticed the birds AF works somehow with some other animals too, atleast with squirrels! :) About starry AF and better face priority on MkIII, sure those might be CPU hungry and works reliably only with the newer image processor, but I feel (and wish!) that OM Digital Solutions (just read the MyOlympus mail) could push them to M1X via firmware update

I recently purchased the X at $1800 reconditioned from Olympus. I take more wildlife and environmental portraiture. The X is perfect for that. I also take a lot astrophotography shots. I always use manual focus mostly with the 8 mm fisheye. So the Starry AF is useless for me. But that’s my shooting preferences. I still use my E-M 1 Mark II as well.

The E-M1 MK III was an easy choice for me. I switched from Canon. The perfect camera for my needs. Professional device that has great features, it's small and light, great ergonomics and adjustable buttons, good price. The only reason it's not the best is that it doesn't have a new feature called "bird detection", which is sad, but I understand Olympus policy. I believe the E-M1X is an excellent camera, the same in many ways, but I personally don't like the size. You don't make a mistake with any of them, it's more about personal needs and small differences.
