I've switched to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark ii. Join me to find out over the coming months if you can use Micro 4/3rds for landscape photography!
I've been considering the feasibility of landscape photography with a micro four-thirds system for some time before settling on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 mk2. There are a number of compelling reasons for this choice which I cover in this video from Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey. And one of the main reasons is the Olympus 12-100mm f/4 zoom lens, which I intend to use as a permanent fixture on it, saving weight and hassle when out and about hiking.
From my investigations so far the camera body and lens combination look like they'll be perfect for the sort of landscape photography you'll find on my channel, and with the excellent video capabilities I expect the Olympus OMD EM-1 mk2 to also be my go-to video and vlogging camera. This further reducing the weight and bulk needed for my landscape photography outings.
Over the coming months I'll be posting reviews, technical details and sharing RAW files on my website, from this camera and lens combination, to help any other landscape photographers who might be wondering if a Micro Four-Thirds system could be suitable for you
I really appreciate you watching, and if you haven't done it already, why not subscribe now and join me next time?!

Hah!!! Stuff enthusiast chat room opinions, I test stuff and as an experimental physicist I trust my own opinion. I bought a used Panasonic GX7 and a 14-140mm for trips pretty much for the same reasons you did; I am getting on and retired now. I really wasnt expecting that much. Well to say I was shocked when it blew away my Nikon D7100 when I fitted an Olympus 17mm f1.9 prime was pretty much an understatement. Well I sold the D7100 (kept my lovely old D700 and my D primes which fit on the leica with an adapter), gave the GX7 to my sister and bought a brand new 20MP GX9. Yes I take street at night, no I have never found it lacking. My Olympus 17mm and 45mm f1.8 primes give my Leica a run for its money. So dont worry about the quality you will find its fine. As long as you are happy who cares what people think. Now on trips I just take the GX9 with a handfull of lenses that weigh next to nothing. The image quality i am gettin now with the MFT equipment and my APS Leica TL2 are better than anything I have ever had. I am happy and I am sure you will be too. I cant recommend the 17mm and 45mm f1.8 more highly; the 17mm is an ideal lanscape and street lens and the camera fits in my handbag, the amazing 14-140mm is an ideal nature lens on trips; result ;-)

P.S. The sweet spot on MFT lenses is f5.6, you will find that the effects of diffraction will start to degrade the image faster than on APS lenses but, of course, you get more depth of field to compensate. You will find that f5.6 will give similar results to about f11 on your old camera but dont quote me on that without doing tests ;-)

Hi Vici, thank you so much for your really helpful info and taking the time to make contact. The 17mm is certainly a lens I'll consider. I do like primes when I'm not hauling a bag full of them up a mountain! I didn't know about the f/5.6 - f/11.0 equivalence, but that's given me something to think about for sure! I'd done a series of tests and saw that 5.6 looked good, so was a little concerned that I'd end up having to focus stack every landscape!! But your not about DoF has stopped me panicking too much 😀I'll get out and about on coast and moorland over next few months and get to grips with it, I'm sure. Thanks again for such an interesting and comprehesive comment I'm sure other viewers will find it helpful too so I'll pin to to the top of the comments ... 😀👍

@sfayers3361 5 лет назад
Just to make you aware. As Vici states, you will get full frame equivalent DOF at half the aperture value ie f/5.6 will give you the DOF of f/11 on a FF body. A word of warning, where as you start to get visible diffraction much above f/16 on a FF body, you will start to get visible diffraction above f/8 on M4/3 bodies. I have carried out a fair amount of testing on around 10 M4/3 lenses from Olympus and Panasonic/Leica. From this testing I use f/5.6 as my go-to landscape aperture, pushing it to f/8 is fine but I will only use f/11 as a last resort. One other note, The LOW ISO 64 setting on the E-M1mk2 gives fractionally less noise than Base ISO 200 but it does loose a very small amount of dynamic range, just be aware. The M4/3 system is fantastic for those of us that are getting on and finding FF systems getting rather heavy for travel. To obtain the best results ensure that you expose correctly and even slightly overexpose in camera, ensuring that you do not clip important highlights, then reduce the exposure in post. This ETTR (Expose To The Right) of the histogram technique is particularly useful on M4/3 where you do not want to introduce noise by lifting the shadows too much in post. Olympus and in particular the E-M1mk2 has a steep learning curve but rewards those that persevere.

I second the Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8! I've got it as a kit lens with my Pen F (due to a recommendation by the sales person) - and found it to be a perfect fit for smaller M43 cameras and of really good quality (says someone who does not like the 17mm/35mm viewing angle that much ;-)). And all that chimed in here about 5.6 being the sweet spot for (most) MFT lenses - they are right! But you have to test, because it varies by lens. Very notable with the Olmypus M.Zuiko 12mm f2, far less pronounced with other lenses (like the 17mm and the 30mm macro). Most lenses will fare quite well up to f11, I'd say. Interestingly my Pen F limits aperture to f8 on my 30mm macro when shooting in HiRes mode (I have to investigate if there was something else when I encountered this), so that might give a hint where the optimum lies.

Really easy video to watch and you’ve a great presence on camera! I switched to Olympus a year ago, I shoot with an EM1 Mk2 and the 12-40 F2.8 pro lens. Absolutely stellar combo and has served me very well over the past year. You will love M43

Thanks a lot Sean, so good of you to take the time to make contact - I really appreciate it! i was very close to choosing that lens, but was swayed by the extra reach of the 12 - 100 because I know I'll use the longer focal lengths in the mountains. And I was happy to forego the wider aperture too. Although I'll use my old Nikon f/1.8 glass (for now!) on an adaptor for family portraits etc 😀👍

I've just stumbled across your channel and really enjoyed this video. I too am a m43 shooter and love taking landscapes. I can't wait to join you on your journey of discovering the Olympus system and hope to learn a thing or two as you share your experiences with us. Also excited about your "August Astro Challenge". I agree with you that it won't be easy, but I'm confident you pull it off. Greetings from Sydney and welcome to the m43 club.

Hi mate, I'm already finding that the creative process is much less about the equipment with this system. I'm having to work far less hard to get the image quality I was looking for, which leaves much more headspace for creativity. Hopefully that's what I'll be able to bring across in future videos. And I'm completely blown away by the response this video has got - it's completely nuts!!! 😃👍

Thanks a lot mate - I know it's going to be a compromise - but I was just at the point of either get out and about less because it's a ball ache or downsize and continue to enjoy my photography. I'm hopeful that my fears about M43 being rubbish were fuelled by forum know-it-alls. My direct experience from just one trip out is that it's really rather good considering ... 👍😃

Hi David. I moved to the Olympus OM-D EM1 MkII last summer. I had been using the Canon 5D MkIII and had been hiking with it on a visit to the American Southwest desert parks last spring. My friend was using an EM1 MkII and was hiking with a much smaller camera bag covering the about the same focal lengths as I was at a fraction of the burden. As my family and I were planning a trek to Scotland that summer to hike the West Highland Way I knew I could not handle dragging all of that full frame gear up and down the Scottish Highlands. I purchased theEM1 MkII with the 12-100 and borrowed my friends Panasonic 100-300. For the hike the 100-300 did not leave the pack after the first day. The EM 1Mk II and 12-100 combination proved to be the perfect hiking combination! I am sure you will be very pleased with your choice.

Hi Dana, thank so much for taking the time to make contact. The West Highland Way is a magnificent trek of course, so it's great to hear you were pleased with this body / lens combination. I expect to be in comparable conditions and locations in my local patch around Anglesey and Snowdonia, so it'll hopefully deliver some good images and they'll be in this channel and in high res on my website. Thanks again, I appreciate your support 😀👍

Really informative vlog David about your decision making process prior to investing into macro 4/3. I've just upgraded my main camera to the Canon 77d with an 18-135mm lens. Seriously happy with the quality so far - I could get comparable sharpness with my crop sensor and a few more Mpix, because it was really good, but, oh, the glass I had to lug about to achieve it - and all that swapping lenses to narrow down compositional choices. Bit of a final straw last weekend out with Mali in Yorkshire. I was not looking forward to all that grief in the mountains this year! 👍😃

Hi Mr Griff. I too switched to micro 4/3 a few weeks ago.being an old fart now I could no longer carry my heavy DSLR system and needed a much lighter system. After much deliberation I chose a panasonic GX-80 plus a few lenses. I was amazed on my first trip out with this new system, I'm no pro photographer but I swear that my pictures were much better than those from my Canon system. My new system is over 3KG lighter than my Canon stuff so that's a great bonus. I'm out almost every day now, I get home and my back isn't aching and I'm loving my hobby even more. I have subscribed and I look forward to watching more of you excellent videos.

Hi, firstly let me thank you ever so much for tuning in and subscribing, I really appreciate it. One thing I’ve learned from my own experience and the huge amount of feedback I have received is that the micro 4/3 system is completely under rated for landscape photography! I am absolutely delighted with the results I’m getting, and the weight saving from the huge Nikon lenses I would’ve had to have bought, is absolutely brilliant👍🏻😊

Really enjoyed this video David. I made the move about 5 months ago and the Olympus kit still delights and surprises me. With lighter kit I take the camera more places and get more shots. Live time and live composite modes are really worth playing with and I'm finding the in camera focus stacking to be great too. I'm sure you are not going to regret having a lighter camera bag

I wholeheartedly agree with you! I decided to stay with my Olympus E-M5 and E-M10 Mk II instead of upgrading to the Fuji X-T3 precisely because it has no IBIS! I love the Olympus IBIS system and that in itself trumps the image improvement from the X-T3. Together with my prime lenses (14, 20, 25 and 45mm), I'm able to pack all that in a small camera bag and walk all day long. I kept reading all the criticisms of MFT cameras on RU-vid, but sadly they are all from people who do not use the system. Until they do, they have no idea how seriously good the images you can get from them and how portable a complete system is.

Welcome to the MU43 club. I am sure you will enjoy I have been using the system since 2010 although on the other side with Lumix (currently a G80) having had a full frame. Even with carrying a few lens it still makes it a joy to use, for a whole host of subjects macro, still life, landscape I have even recently tried night time astro with a wide(ish) prime and seemed to manage will. Hi David, just stumbled across your channel. Interesting points made about the new camera, I use a Panasonic GH5 m43 and am thrilled with the results, also own an old Olympus OMD 10 which my wife uses. My main camera is a 50 megapixel Canon DSR which is wonderful. My point is that most modern cameras seem to be very capable, a few times my wife has taken pictures with the tiny OMD 10 which are so amazing I told other people I took them. Lying and deceit being the best way to proceed in life...😐

Hi Andrew, that made me smile😄 your point is very well made though. Photography for me is very much about getting out into the wilderness in my local area and sharing the secret little locations that I’ve enjoyed for years. But the only way I can continue with photography of a quality which I am satisfied with is by having the best possible but lightweight equipment. My days of lugging about heavy lenses are long since past! 😊👍🏻

Great images David, new system seems to work ok :-D I've been using a Canon M3 for a couple of years and you are correct in that size matters not! It has served me well, so much so I had it repaired after a fall and still carry it and use it as a backup, street and handy 'in my pocket' system. With the adapter I can use the full size canon glass but the M series lenses are great anyway. Looking forward to seeing more images from your new system :-D

Just found your channel and enjoyed the video so I've subscribed. I've been using MFT for landscape work since 2012 and switched to Olympus in 2016(E-M5 II). I use the Oly 12-40 and a Lumix 45-175 along with the Oly 9mm fisheye lens cap that gives surprisingly sharp images for a "toy" and takes up virtually no room or weight. With a short extension tube to cover closeups the whole lot weighs less than my old Canon plus kit lens. As to the video I loved the tip about clapping hands to sync the sound - I must try that one next time I'm doing any video work.. Also looking forward to your astro experiment - I tried it once using my Panasonic GH2 but the noise was too much to handle - stars and colour noise look much the same to noise reduction tools! - but the tech has moved on...

Enjoyable video David, happy new toy. I have used the EM1 mkii with 12-100mm since it’s launch and have taken some really good images with it (in my opinion) and any that fall short of the grade have been due to operator error rather than equipment shortcomings. As you get to grips with it you will find the high res mode gives another dimension ( on a tripod) to your landscapes and the live composite mode is great for low light. I’ve used the EM1 mkii for photographing the Milky Way and the equipment was faultless. Thank you ( just subscribed)

Hi William, many thanks for making contact - I did look at that lens combination and was very tempted, but having looked over my portfolio I concluded that the few images I took at the really wide and really long ends of the scale made it feasible to forego the first 5mm and last 50mm as compromise worth tolerating to just keep one lens on the body. Of course, I might come to regret that and come round to your approach in due course! But at least even then I'll be spending and carrying a lot less than I would with Nikon logos!! 👍😃

Really Interesting thought process on your new setup. Looking forward to seeing the results. I fully believe that most photographers ( a fair few vloggers included ) carry far to much weight. Some names of landscape photographers using M43: Craig Roberts (e6 vlogs, already mentioned by someone else, using Olympus) and James Popsys (using a Panasonic G9 by now). There are others, doing more travel and adventure photography with M43 (e.g. Chris Eyre-Walker). You might know those already, just wanted to drop a note. Notably, those I've mentioned are professionals, earning their money with these cameras. Interesting to see how often size and weight are the main reasons for going M43 (same with me ;-)).

Hi Christian, many thanks for getting in touch. You’re quite right the main thing for me was very much about size and weight. Being able to easily get the equipment up to the high peaks that I want to shoot during this year was essential, while still obtaining the best possible image quality. Based on all the great feedback I have had from people like yourself and the research that I did with the people you mentioned, I’m hopeful that it’s going to be great. Hope you will enjoy coming along with me! 😊👍🏻

My lucky day . Your video was right up my alley. I'm old and retired with the game leg living in Costa Rica for over 20 years. About a year ago my big Nikons were getting to be hard to lug about so I bought my first Olympus the 10-m2 and liked it so then a 5-m3 which was nice and then the Pen 7 which is a very sexy little beauty. You'll never guess what I did in November. lol You guessed it I bought 1-m2 . So, look forward to enjoying your videos.

It has been a pleasure to see you grow over the last year (and physically shrink!). M43 won’t let you down, I use an E-PL6 for my underwater work and when I don’t want to lug around my 5DsR. The Oly 60mm macro is fantastic should you wish to explore that direction. Camera less important than the photographer’s skill and vision and you have that in spades.

Great insights and wise choice with your kit. I’ve been shooting landscapes for the last 3 years using a pair of original EM 1s and have never been left wanting. I have been fortunate enough to own all 3 Pro Zoom lenses as well as several zuikio primes in various focal lengths. Admittedly with this system I have become a sort of an avid collector. I also read way too many comments on other channels and forums who malign the qualities of micro 4/3 but as someone who actually owns the system and more importantly makes large prints I can promise you many of those comments are pretty baseless.....of course even that’s in my own humble opinion. Haha.

Thanks so much watching and your input! When I was doing my research I was quite astounded at how vitriolic some full frame users were. And yet if challenged on the "bigger is better" argument I'm pretty sure they couldn't come up with reasons why they aren't using medium format!! The images I've already obtained in the very short time I've owned this have impressed me immensely - and, just like you, I can see myself investing in lots more lenses. Although probably not to carry about for my landscapes! 😃👍

Congratulations big time👌 I bought the em1.2 with the 12-100 2 years ago and has taken 80% of my pictures with it since. It is a fantastic lens combined with the ibis. You will seldom need a tripod. Be aware though, that m4/3 lenses are best at half the f-stop value as full frame lenses ie. use 5.6 where you would use 11 with full frame. f11 will result is a little softish details. The 12-100 is sharpest at 4-5.6 in the wide end and at 5.6 in the long end. f8 is ok but seldom needed for landscape, in my experience. Good luck and happy clicks from here.

Welcome to the Olympus family! You will love this camera + lens combo. I made a trip to Europe last year and that's all I brought with me. I didn't miss a single shot because I didn't have lens "x" or lens "y". The wide range of the lens made it perfect for all situations and the IBIS allowed me to take photos in dark places handheld at 2" shutter speed. No need for a super fast lens. One piece of advice. ISO 64 it's not native to the camera. It can be achieved through some computer algorithm that it's too complicated for me to understand but I know it reduces the dynamic range of the image. I'm guessing for landscape you need as much dynamic range as you can get so I would suggest to stay at 200 ISO. That's the lowest native ISO of the camera. It's my only gripe about it. I wish it would go to 100.

I just picked up an Olympus OMD-Em1 Mk1 with lenses to serve as my "small kit" when I don't need (or too tired to carry) my FF kit. Indeed, the old knees sometime need a break! I'm very happy with my two zooms which cover a 24-200mm equivalent. Amazing the difference in size when you put both systems side by side. The Oly camera system is a joy to use. But I'm a bit impartial given I used Oly film cameras as well. Look forward to your future videos.

Welcome to the family! I know you'll be satisfied with you new camera. A couple of tips though, when using ISO low, make sure you handle your highlights. You can't do much in post with the highlights when using the low settings. And be aware that mft tends to get softer above f.8,0. There is a nice word for the phenomenon but I can't recall what it is. And btw, I have a pin sharp photo on my wall taken hand held with a two second exposure, lying down and leaning of a bridge, and it's 100x70 cm. Believe me, you can print huge if you get your focus right. The Olympus EM1II is a great camera and the customer service, at least here in Sweden, is nothing less then great. Love your show, personality and photos. Keep the good work up. I'm looking forward for more.

Great buy, I think you'll be pleased with it. While I'm sure someone has already pointed it out may I suggest that the sweet spot for f-number is most often 5.6 for landscapes and m43. That is the equivalent dof as f11 on FF. If more dof is required I sometimes go up to f8 but very rarely above.

I use the same setup that you do. My experience with the 12-100 mm has been entirely positive. You can do almost landscape with it, hand held, and not be disappointed with the quality. The 8 prime fits in my pocket and can be used for super wide shots. I like the versatility of a system that lets you mix and match gear. You can have a pocket camera or a true professional camera with a birding lens. One lightweight system does everything I ever need in a camera.

Welcome to the Olympus family. I also made the switch from Nikon (7200) to Olympus and the weight savings is definitely noticeable. I am more likely now to carry my camera everywhere and have taken some pretty good night photography shots using the 12-40 f2.8 pro lens, however next time I may rent the 17mm 1.2 and give it a try as I would likely capture more in less time. The pro glass for the Olympus is excellent, and I also find myself with more keepers and less ruined shots due to handshake. Being able to see through the viewfinder the shot also helps nail exposure more precisely when shooting full manual. Works really well for black and white also! While I might have given up a few megapixels, the ability to slap it on a tripod and get a super res shot is very useful. Now, if they would only give us a firmware update with the simulated ND filters my bag can get even lighter. :)

Hi Steven, yes, all really good points, but it seems they were holding back the ND simulations for the new E-M1X. I suppose we might get them one day, but in the mean time the EVF exposure and live comp makes life a lot easier than I used to have it with a DSLR 😃👍

I have an older 12-60 Olympus zoom lens and it is tack sharp, I used it with the older Olympus E-620 camera body and I also shot hand held pano of geese in a park and got an excellent result. Hi Gino, thanks a lot for watching and taking the time to make contact. The D810 is a great camera of course, and I if I had decided to stay with Nikon that would have been a strong contender. But, as you said, it's quite heavy, and the lenses would make the whole system a lot heavier! The quality of M4/3 handheld images I obtained on this shoot were a real surprise to me, because I wasn't really concentrating too hard on them - I was shooting in Manual of course, but it was more of an exercise to grab a few images for a closer look at on my computer later. In fact I hadn't expected to even have anything worth using in the video! So I'm really pleased with it so far. Hopefully I can find some time today to get out into the mountains and take a little more time to get some more considered images! 👍 😀

Really enjoying the videos David. I'd highly recommend a peak design capture clip, although expensive it's fantastic having your camera at hand without it swinging around your neck, also seems to fascinate people passers by as to how it's attached to me. I've really been looking into the M4/3rds system as most of the opportunities to get out are often with my two insane whippets and Missus running around where a tripod is often not the best option. I have been straddling between Canon FF and Fuji the last year or so after an initial move to Fuji I realised that to get weather sealed lenses of equal quality I'm actually carrying almost the same weight as my Canon gear. Great content once again and hope to see you on my wanderings in Wales sometime.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 5 лет назад
Hi Paul, yes that's an excellent camera clip recommendation and one I've given careful consideration to. But using a small pouch means that it's out of the worst of the elements (even though rugged build and weather-sealing of both body and lens was a big factor!) plus I can carry a filter system and and other accessories to hand. This means that I can take images either handheld or grab the tripod off my pack with one hand - so I have the best of both worlds in terms of photo flexibility when hiking. I also have to allow for vlogging gear too of course! But a big part of the portability does revolve around fast reactions to changing light conditions as I hike without taking my pack off and setting up! Also I'm far too cheap to pay Peak Design prices LOL!! 👍😃

Wow, just found your channel David, fantastic video production quality and terrific photographs. I’m a bit of a gear nerd and like you have been trying to pare down the weight aspect of the equipment as I’m not getting any younger!🙈I’m an Olympus fan from way back in the film days (OM 1n) etc and currently shoot with either Olympus or Fuji gear. There is as you say a ton of negativity regarding micro four thirds as a landscape capture camera, but I don’t personally agree with the so called findings. I am still however weighing up the two systems for all round usage. I should say that my two systems are the older Olympus OMD’s and Fuji’s🥴 Will be interested to see your take on the all in one lens. All the best from a Pom in Western Australia😎🇦🇺👍 Subscribed!

Hi Stephen, thank you so much for watching and your kind feedback! I always liked Olympus and although I never owned an OM1 I do remember its impact on the photography world! My first film camera was a Rolleiflex which I used for about 5 years in the early 80s. I took a short break from photography (about 30 years!) and when digital got to the point of reasonable quality without Pro prices I got back in with Nikon. I just need something that I can still haul up the Snowdonia peaks and Nikon glass would have needed a wheel-barrow!! I'm hopeful this option will do the trick - and I do like having one lens for landscapes if at all possible. I may get more glass for other applications of course! 😀👍

Hi Dave Thanks for your insights and images! Looking forward to seeing and hearing more of your experiences with this camera. I'm really interested in that camera and the M1X as I nearly always have to make a decision about which kit to take out - landscape or wildlife - for example, I didn't bring my long lens and second camera body at all when visiting the UK last year so no wildlife :-( I would love a kit that was portable enough to do both. As always, keep up the great work. Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian, I was very wary of switching because you read so much in forums about how M4/3rds really doesn't cut it for landscapes. I even kept my Nikon gear rather than part-ex it on the deal just in case I decided to roll back to it! But so far - totally in love with this set-up. The snaps from this outing were intended to be test shots for close review later - I had no expectation that they'd be anywhere near good enough to make the cut for the vlog! The ease of use of this system and the eye-watering detail it captures is astonishing. Let alone the weight saving! I know my old system was more than capable of matching it with the right heavy-weight glass, but quite apart from the weight I'd no longer be able to claim to be a budget-conscious photographer!! I'm hopefully heading out into Snowdonia later - plenty of snow and ice about, so that should be interesting as first proper shoot 👍 😀

I've invested three or four hundred pounds on 2 second-hand Pentax Q system cameras and related lenses over the last year and a half or so (my first system cameras). Very nicely-priced in Japan. So I have banned myself from further photography purchases until summer 2023 at the earliest. My feeling is I'm now in possession of a perfectly adequate "starter kit", and can really push on and learn a lot, if I apply myself. Landscapes will be a sizeable chunk of my learner portfolio over the next few years, so I'm really glad this channel came up on my feed today - I'm already FOUR clips in. Enjoying your content very much. And I must say, when my camera purchase moratorium ends, Olympus is definitely on my list for consideration. I was looking at the new EM10 mk 4 in a shop t'other day, and I've never seen a finer looking camera. It's good to know that you're happy with the performance of your Olympus, and that's another plus point I'll consider when I open me wallet again, three or four years from now :)

Usual quality vlog, David, but an amazing amount of tech feedback in the comments. On a more prosaic level I’ll be inerested to see how the new format affects your thoughts on composition. My first digital camera was a 4;3 Olympus Camedia 20 years ago (DLSRs were prohibitively expensive then) and after best part of 40 years with 35mm film the format was a little uncomfortable. Thanks for sharing - at least you have enough subject matter for a series of vlogs in replying to you followers! Cheers!

Hi Brian, I’ve been completely astounded by the interest in this particular video. I had no idea I was going to get the sort of feedback that I have. The thing is, I don’t really expect to take very long to get a pretty good handle on how the system works. There are a few nuances to consider to allow for the smaller sensor, but it seems to me that the bottom line is it’s extremely good quality in a very portable system. And as you will already know that’s all I need to take out and about. So I’m pretty confident it’s just going to mean that it’s easier to get out more often shoot more pictures and spend more time considering light and composition and all the stuff that I really enjoyed about landscape photography, much more than the technical side of things. I’m really conscious that people like yourself who have followed me for some time deserve to still get exactly the same sort of content as I have always done. So I’ll always try to make sure that any new stuff I do which is different to the old stuff is done AS WELL as the usual and not instead of it. So friends like yourself don’t feel left behind😊👍🏻

Good move Dave, I’ve been an M43 user since 2012 and found the quality to be excellent, especially the lenses that have excellent performance even wide open. Well I must say the response has been overwhelmingly positive so far. Apart from one really long comment about some serious shortcomings, which I haven't answered yet. I might have to wait until I have some more empirical evidence to hand if I'm to refute it 😃but hopefully I won't end up agreeing with it - in any case as long as image quality is reasonable, I'll take portability any day 👍😃
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 5 лет назад
There are always going to be shortcomings when using a smaller sensor, the same issues have have been faced with film for over 150 years. That said however they are less of a problem with digital where M43 is easily the equivalent of medium format film and therefore more than good enough for very large prints. I have made 32” panoramics from my original EM5 (16mp) and 14-45 kit lens that are all but flawless to my eyes. I also have a full frame Nikon and it is true that there is more flexibility when processing the RAW file, especially in the shadows. To my eye however there is a more natural look to the Micro 43 sensors output, it is much closer to that of a film original and unsurprisingly I prefer that to a super smooth and less convincing rendering. You have definitely made the intelligent decision, too many people believe there is something magical about ‘full frame’, a term I dislike as before 35mm large format and roll film were considered ‘full’ and the newcomer was called miniature. I have no doubt that you will love the system, not least the stabilisation which is nothing short of witchcraft 🙂

@SteveONions

I’ve always been happy with bracketing and panoramics when handheld. When you also factor in that the lenses are at nearly always at their best only one stop down from max aperture you have no need for high ISO and can therefore maximise the IQ. My Panasonic G9 and 12-35, 35-100 combination will be going up a hill somewhere next weekend hopefully, tripod optional.

Fascinating vlog. I think I made a similar journey nearly 2 years ago. After an illness I was finding my Canon 7dmkii and all the lenses too much. I was torn between the Fuji XT-2 and the Olympus EM1mkii and finally settled on the Oly with the 12-40 pro. Recently I’ve found myself lumping both cameras about and preferring the landscape results of the Canon. I’ve been watching the mirrorless developments with Canon and seriously tempted with the EOS-R, but the reason Oly won over Fuji was IBIS, so it was very disappointing to see it missing in the Canon mirrorless Also, the weight of the lenses - tail wagging dog. I’m carrying on as I am for now but I am fairly sure I will go full frame for landscape. Oly and the 12-40 has been great though for street, holidays, and interiors that won’t let you use a tripod. I’ll be hanging on to it whatever

That's an interesting perspective, Helen. I've only been out a couple of times with the M4/3 system so far, but I'm absolutely delighted with the image quality, even in low light. Great choice about M4/3: I would be curious to know your reasoning behind the choice of the EM1MkII over the G9 form Panasonic which today comes even cheaper and it's almost a twin of the Olympus (I own both Oly and Panny so I'm not leaning either way). I also advise you to check Nick Page's "exposure blending in Photoshop" which should help a lot with M4/3 and non ideal light situations. e6 Vlog is a seasoned Landscaper converted to m43 and you can check about his experiences

@@DGriffGallery I don't think there's any point buying 12-40 after you already have 12-100. The latter is already an exceptional lens and 40 is not that much and you'd think of supplementing it with 40-150. It's more wise to get an 1.8 or 1.4 prime for night photos or shallow dof. By the way, 15mm 1.7 is better optically (and in other ways) than 17mm 1.8 (so is 20mm 1.7 pancake) and the price is not that different. Having a small lens is a great advantage when you can have your whole system in the pocket. This is why I still use 14-42 pancake and a prime (my preferred is 25mm) quite often - it's not an optical marvel but I sometimes can't take any backpack and would miss the shots otherwise.

Low Iso is extended , usable but you get no room in the highlights, even when you shoot raw there shouldn't be any blinking warning. Not sure that that there is a quality advantage over iso 200 and exposing too the right.

I was going to make precisely the same points as those above. ISO 200 is usually the best. I would only use ISO64 if there was no better way to slow the exposure time. F5.6 seems to be the sweet spot on most of the M4/3 lenses. I also have the EM1 mkII, I have all of the pro zooms, but the 12-100 hardly leaves the camera. The other lens which I use a lot is the 60mm macro. It is a cracking little lens and M4.3 is perfect for macro.

Although as far as grads go I tend to do far more blending exposures in post because I hate the darkening effect on anything which protrudes from the composition into the sky so do my best to avoid this. You've chosen one and would love to see more of your work in the future and your thought on jumping from larger system to M43. Just a quick note, coming from a seasoned M43 pro (especially an Olympus Pro), LOW ISO settings will have less dynamic range in the highlights so if you are a landscape guy, try to use base ISO 200 as much as possible for the expanded range. Morning Jimmy, small world. Yes I pretty much leave ISO on 400 as for most of my life I used ISO 400 Fujicolour film; i am a creature of habit. Indoors I usually set ISO 800 or 1600, never needed higher. As I suggested in my comment above D.Griff., I find the perfect camera combination for London is a MFT body with the Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens; it is light, compact and just fits in my handbag without inconvenience. I love the clutch manual focus feature especially picking out small objects in museums. The lens is so sharp it will take a 300% crop if necessary (I rarely ever crop above 200% unless i am interested in picking out a detail I cant get close to) making a zoom redundant. More importantly this lens has very few lens elements which leads to an image dripping with microtones; you wont get a hyperfocal shot from a fast Pro lens that will resolve depth as well as this; its close to my Leica Summilux for hyperfocal image quality making it a very valuable lens indeed, the Leica costs 5 times more. I mostly take Panaramic street photos up to XPAN format so all my shots are cropped pretty much. My GX9s 20MP sensor has more than enough resolution for this. My MFT shots in London are amongst the best I have ever taken. This last year I have become completely sold on MFT, my other cameras hardly get a look in ;-)

Good to hear someone who doesn't jump on the M43 is dead bandwagon started by a couple in the good ole USA. I've had an Olympus em10, EM5 mk2 and now a Panasonic G9. I have also simultaneously owned a Canon 5DSr which was traded recently for a Sony A73r. Last year I took a lot of images, but didn't get round to editing until recently. And I have been surprised that most of the keepers are from the M43 system. Why, when the Canon and Sony were 'better' cameras? Because the best camera in the world is the one you have with you, and both Canon and Sony glass is significantly heavier than M43 lenses, but the quality is only marginally, sometimes imperceptibly, better. I print no larger than A3 so the difference is largely immaterial, but my old body has had enough carrying heavy lenses around. The Olympus 40-150 f2.8, 300 f4, and the Panasonic 200 f2.8 (with a great 1.4x converter) are excellent lenses. At a recent photoshoot I was using the Olympus 40-150 on the G9, and the Sony GMaster 85 f1.4 simultaneously, and the difference is really hard to see. Images from both are readily acceptable. But the M43 system is lower cost than Sony, lighter, and imho better stabilised (smaller sensors?). So good luck with your em1 mk2.

Thanks a lot Tony, so far I'm loving everything about it and wondering why it took me so long to make my mind up!! Out in the mountains today and got some great images and carrying the entire system a breeze!!

Hi Barrie, I was only moving to a smaller sensor from APS-C, but if I'd been up at full frame I'd have been a little concerned in making the switch. Of course, now I've been out and got a few images under my belt I'm completely sold on it!! ;)

@@DGriffGallery I've tried aps after my 1st full frame packed in. I couldn't get away with it. The raw samples I downloaded could easily be printed as A2. I have a Canon 6D which produces fantastic results but the processing of these newer sensors must've moved on a lot. First thing I tried was pulling the shadows and was amazed at quality. I do a lot of blending so shadows are never a problem anyway. Regards Barrie

Excellent setup. It's the same one I've been recommending to landscape photographers who have been looking for a lighter setup. By the way Dave, for m43 is not necessary to close your lens to f11. You can shoot with your 12-100 f4 wide open and have a sharp and higher quality image. For most lenses is better to keep them below f8. Cheers!

Thanks a lot for watching and especially taking the time to make contact with some helpful advice - I'll take all I can get! To be fair to the equipment though, I was already very impressed with the quality even at the "wrong" aperture!! 😃👍

@@DGriffGallery You are welcome! Thank you for your video. I'm going to quote two favorite photographers of mine "Photography is not a competition, it's a passion". - Joe Edelman . And Bryan Peterson "It's not the wrong aperture if it's the right exposure". He loves shooting f22 with his Nikon gear. Every photographer decides their own creative approach of course. But with m43, due to it's smaller sensor has compromises, one of them is diffraction at higher f numbers. I'm glad to know you are enjoying your gear. Man o man, does the E-M1 mk2 have fun features. I'm going to subscribe and hit that bell to follow your progress and learn from your experience. Thank you again.

Good decision David. Im 65 and moved to the Fuji X-T2 and two main lenses from the Nikon D810 and the usual heavy glass. I was struggling with the heavy gear now retired and being honest I didn't need full frame. For me the IQ difference in the small Format camera system sensors, was not significant enough and medium format was out the question, too heavy and too expensive although I like what Fuji are doing. I have printed identical images 36X20inches from Mft, app-c and my D810 FF and I'll tell you lying them side by side you couldn't tell the difference (unless you stuck your nose with a magnifying glass smack up against them The Olympus system was just a bit on the pricey side for me at the time but who knows in the future. Ive been doing this off and on for about 40 years and can't believe the nonsense we get from full frame enthusiasts about how much better FF is compared to crop! They don't seem to understand the small format camera system and the choice we have in sensors it does not mean one is better that the other! anyway great review David you can see why my wife chose my monicker!
