Hi Rob, I recently bought an Olympus E-M1 Mki and some OM mount lenses. I decided to get into vintage lenses to add a different dimension to my photography. Many of your old videos on OM-D cameras were very helpful when I was setting up my camera. Also, your video on adapting vintage lenses was super valuable. Thank you for making these videos. BTW the videos still look great🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Nice video. I started with the EM10.2. Love it. I don't do any video so all those specs mean nothing to me. I took it on a trip to Istanbul last year with the 12-40 pro and lumix 20/1.7. It all fit into a small messenger I carried. The pro lens isn't the best ergonomic fit but it is a stunning lens. The 20mm pancake was fast and sharp. Great for street photography and some indoor photography in low light. I had Costco print a 20" x 30" print on the skyline that is hanging in my dining room. Wow! 16 MP. I bought the EM1.2 after that trip basically for the handling. It's so much easier to carry around by hand. I have the 40-150 kit living on my EM10.2 now which I take with me every time I walk the dog because I love to try to photograph birds. The 12-40 pro is what's on my EM1.2. I rarely, if ever, use all the special features of these cameras. I've yet to do a high res shot. I do hate the fully articulating screen on the EM1.2. I'm afraid it's going to break. I also have the 45/1.8 I use on my EM10.2 for grandson pictures. Fantastic. I'm not a pro and mainly post on social media. Thinking of getting the new 100-400 to use on my EM1. Maybe next year. I love the light weight and size of the Olympus line because most of my photography is when I'm out hiking or vacation. Enough rambling.

I really want a fully articulating screen. I'm considering the em5 over this because of that reason only. Had them on my old cameras and I much prefer them. Not only because it keeps the screen in pristine condition.

The fully articulated back is not just a selfies or vlogging stuff, but a mighty creative tool for placing the camera at surprising angles, like in the old times the TLR's were for pets, babies and anything else at floor level, previously unpossible to do. But the fully articulating back of nowadays has upgraded this specific capability to new levels, literally 3D 360 angles. A dramatic upgrade, not just a cuantitative one, "in my opinion".

Happy New Year from New Zealand, Rob! Such a lot of good information packed in a video! I am a Lumix (GM5) user but I have always loved the form factor of the E-M5. It has everything plus the weather-sealing. I don't mind the plastic construction of the Mark III as cars have plenty of plastics too and they are put in harsher conditions. I know those are of a different grade but they are still polymers. Stay safe, mate!

Good summary of the differences between these cameras. I don't have an em10 mark iv, but they changed the grip on that camera. Some people, including Peter Forsgard, have said that this gives the camera an improved grip that makes the camera more comfortable to hold than say an em5 mark iii.

Happy 2022 Rob! Thanks for the excellent comparison video. Two additional 'upgrades' for the E-M1 Mklll and the E-M1X over the other models -- if I am not mistaken. Both of those two top tier models have an improved 'dust shaker' mechanism and both have a 400,000 cycle mechanical shutter. I believe the E-M1 Mkll has a 200 or 250,000 cycle shutter. These are not big issues, but are rarely noted improvements. I recently upgraded from my E-M1 Mkll to the M1X, and I am thrilled with it. Even the button design and dial action are improved -- and it fits my have like well worn glove, and I love shooting all day with one battery load. I've all but ditched my tripods. As you correctly pointed out, the only negative I can see in the lack of Starry AF -- sure hope OM Solutions adds it with a future firmware upgrade.

Hello Rob, Jose from Puerto Rico. It's been a while since I posted any comment here, but I just wanted to let you know that I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a used OM-D EM mark II. I just ordered it today (December 26, 2020). After checking, it looked good for the price. 645 bucks on Ebay. After listening to you and other respectable RU-vidrs who actually use the camera, I decided. I'm not a pro just a serious amateur that loves photography. The feature set on the camera is still impressive and as you mentioned, the mark iii though has nice to have features, I can do without them by following your suggestions and tips. Once it arrives and I order a lens, I'll probably be sifting through all your past tutorials to get the most out of it. I have a special place in my heart for Olympus since I still own a OM-4t film camera I purchased in 1986.

I had the choice a little while back of acquiring the em1 mk2 for just over £1k from Olympus with a free 1.4 pro lens and was very tempted . At the same time, they were also offering an em10 mk2 for £350 with the R2 kit lens. Since I was looking for a light weight go everywhere camera, having found that carrying another camera that felt pain all day being carried around my neck (and it was not particularly heavy or so I thought when I bought it) , I wanted something for street , portrait and landscape and this fitted that requirement perfectly , doubling up for travel as well. As you may have guessed I Choose the em 10. I do not do pro work these days and there is always a trade off on whatever camera you choose . Whist the Sigma 1.4 lenses look great , I suspect they are a little too big for this model. So, I will look to add a 45 and 25 mm 1.8 . Why did I go with the older model . In a word value and realisability that had been proven to work . My other digital camera was only ten years old and produces excellent images , but it felt heavy and I wanted a model that was flexible and light . Working within the limitations of the chosen model it does not disappoint . And here is the essence of your video. Match the camera to your needs and not just for all things it could do, which you may never use or use infrequently. This was a great video and thank you for doing it. If I saw it two months ago I might have been tempted to chose the em1 mk2, but it would have resulted in neck ache in the long run, as I had always thought it to big and heavy. And yes, I bought in to Olympus when others may not considered it as there first choice because it ticked all the boxes . I had a long thought of going with the XT20, but the average size of their lenses (excellent as they are) but found most of them too big. It is knowing one’s own limitations as much as the camera . Thanks again for an insightful and well thought out explanation .

Have one and honestly don't regard the XT20 and Fuji X series glass as being "heavy" or that much more demanding to move around with than my Pen F and 12-40 2.8. Both excellent systems and excellent value for money.
@carmenfissenden2530
@carmenfissenden2530 2 года назад
@@robertcudlipp3426 Fuji have some great primes and that was the attraction to considering the xt20. Zooms tend to be bigger and whilst the 12-40 2.8 is a great lens, I found it too big . In an ideal world I would have loved primes to be more affordable and light . When you look at what Canon can do a 50mm for and the price of Olympus and Fuji equivalent and you can see where I am coming from. There is no bad camera , just the one that ticks the boxes it was intended for. I began with Fuji cameras back in the film days and loved those as much as my pro gear. The standard kit lens was 55mm and I loved that focal length over 50mm. I also loved 40mm over 35mm, which is why I am excited about the new 1.4 40mm. In my wildest dreams I would love a Leica , but that would not make me a better photographer , no matter how much I would try to convince myself ha ha. Thank you Robert for sharing your thoughts with me.

Awesome recommendations. I don't have a 20MP M43 camera yet. Still using the E-M5 Mark ii which does what I need. If I were to upgrade I would probably go straight to the E-M1 mark iii because of the USB charging. Again it depends on the price difference between this and the E-M1 mark ii. The 2nd hand market prices are always changing. The E-M1 mark ii is still an excellent camera especially after the firmware updates.

Great video as usual! One thing em1x do a better job than other camera is that you can assign custom mode to any of its functions buttons. It make switching between custom mode much faster and reliable(than turning the mode dial). It make instant switching between those advance modes (i.e. Pro. Cap, live nd,HHHR) possible.

I would step up to the e-m5 mark iii with the 14-150mm kit lens. That would be a much more substantial upgrade. Yes, double the price of the e-m10 iv, but money well spent. If you can sell the em10 iii, then I think it makes sense to maybe get the em10 iv.

@momchilyordanov8190
@momchilyordanov8190 3 года назад
From the current lineup, I would choose M5 III because of size/price/capabilities balance. With the M1 series (combined with the better lenses in order to get the most of it), one gets into size/price where other brands offer cameras with significantly better IQ. So, my logic is, get the most capable small one and use it with the smaller lenses, like the 12/2, 17/1.8, 25/1.8 and 45/1.8 and even 75/1.8. These are still very capable, I had them all on my M1 II. But If bigger is needed, just go full frame.

@TL-xw6fh
@TL-xw6fh 3 года назад
Your logic about FF sounds fine until you start adding the size and weight disadvantages of the lenses. Just look at the latest 50 mm f1.2 lenses for the FF cameras vs the Olympus and you will know what I mean. I did not even mention the long tele lenses. A 600mm/F4 tele lens for FF will need a 5kg tripod and a separate trolley to carry it on your wildlife/sports/outdoor shooting.

I have the E-M1 mk2...but I just picked up a E-M1x. I wanted that bird detection autofocus...plus I got a deal on the camera ($1,450). The lens I use the most is the 300mm F/4 pro...and most often with a teleconverter! So, even with the EM1 mk2, I had the battery grip to better balance the camera rig. But, a disadvantage for the Oly battery grips is that one battery stays in the camera and is not as easily accessed...you have to take the grip off to get at it. With the E-M1x, both batteries are easy to get at. And the sealing is bound to be better than between a grip and the camera on the Mk 2 and 3...or the Mk 1 for that matter. With your price comparison between the EM1 Mk 2 vs Mk 3, if you are getting batteries and a tripod and filters with both...then you should ask yourself whether the Mk 3 is $500 better than the Mk 2. I decided it wasn't. But when the bird detection showed up for the EM1x...and I got a great price...less than that for a Mk 3 plus battery grip, well....couldn't resist.

Hi Rob! Excellent Comparison! Only thing I don't like that much on the e-m1 models is the less tactile shutter release button. I was struggling with the half press a lot when testing one. Originally wanted to upgrade from the e-m5 II but now thinking of switching to an e-m5 III + grip because of that. Do you know if you are able to have different settings for the grip dial and the front dial of the camera on the e-m5 III? On the e-m5 II it's not possible sadly.

I like using old lens and it’s just something about OMD m43. IDK if it’s the sensor size or the IS. Recently I picked up a Nikon 2.8 180mm ED prime manual lens with excellent optics/mechanics for well under $200. I’m speechless how good the lens is. It’s a little on the heavy side but worth it. Even works great on my em5 mk1 thats my beater and starting to get tired.

Dear Rob. Thanks for all the videos. I have really enjoyed your videos on EM10 mk2. I have the 25mm f1.8 on it. I am looking to invest in a good zoom and one more prime. I am thinking about the 12 to 40 and 40 to 150 pro. I am looking at an EM1 MK2. Fits my budget. How would it be for the next five years? Can i expect a newer body from Olympus in the next fove years? Is it wise to invest in the system if no newer bodies are going to be released by Oly? I love the form factor of the whole kit. I also need the camera to do well in most day to day scenario. Especially, nailing shots of my 15 month old running around. Will appreciate your input. Thanks.

And in all honesty as nice as they are REAL world Printed A3 I struggle to see the benefits from a kit lens . All the Olympus lenses are great , ( sure pixel peep on a computer screen you will …So Travel is why I would buy a 10 mk iV over the rest . Hi Robin, thanks for another great video. I've just upgraded my Panasonic Fz330 24-600 zoom for the OM-D e-m1 mark ii with 12-40 and 40-150 pro's in a Good Friday deal. I was considering the E-M5 Mark III but I have massive hands and am used to zooming and your comments re price/handling made previously helped me to take the leap. I like a compact system so M43 was as far as I wanted to go. First impressions... It is as comfortable to hold and has a menu system that isn't as bad as feared. I'm getting a lot of overexposed shots (I shoot outdoors on the moors in UK with high contrast scenes between rocky tors and skies). I've used your settings re exposure etc but many are too bright even though I wind back all the highlight warnings. I also shoot jpeg. Is it worth adjusting the tone curves? I might get the 1.4 converter at some time as I do some wildlife and the occasional airshow. Bob
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 3 года назад
Hi. I've noticed in esp metering, it tends to overexpose about 1/3 stop vs my other cameras. Don't mess with the individual tone curves yet. First take a few test shots of various scenes with your current settings. Then go into menu E3 -> Exposure Shift -> -2/6. Then in the super control panel, change the gradation from "normal" to "Auto". Take the same shots again with these new settings. Simply adjust to taste from there. The exposure shift is obvious I think, but the "Auto" gradation basically brings up the shadows. You can change it back to "Normal" and see if you like that better. Note that exposure shift will affect both raw and jpg files, but gradation only affects jpg. Let me know if that helps. -Rob

Hi Rob, rational, common sense advice as usual. I have the EM10 mk 2 and it became clear that the EM5 mk 3 was a logical upgrade. I was keenly looking for a deal when a recent sale price came up on the OMD 1 mk 3 put it within $250 of the EM5 3. It’s constantly touted as a pro camera and I get that but $250 for what looks like a massive upgrade was hard to pass up. Haven’t received it and can return it. is the additional weight and size a make or break for travel photography? Your thoughts please. Thank you!

Question: Someone did a really good comparison between the Olympus High Rez mode vs Topaz hi-rez software. The results were very similar with a slight preference to Topaz. But what I'm really interested in is the result of using the Topaz hi-rez on an Olympus captured High Rez shot. In theory the Olympus High Rez is from actual data, so it should stand up to further processing with Topaz. Am I right? Knowing the results would help me decide between continuing on with Olympus 20mp bodies, vs an expensive upgrade to a 40 or 45 mpx full frame.

I am an enthusiastic landscape photographer hobbyist and have a Nikon d800e with 3 lenses, all of which are quite heavy to lug up mountains when I'm hiking. So I'm considering changing to mft and am unsure of the benefits of the Olympus om-d e-m1 over the e-m5. Any advice?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 3 года назад
I think you'll enjoy the e-m1 mark iii over the e-m5 mark iii for landscapes. The e-m1 offers handheld hi-res shot and live-nd filter. This will come in handy for those days you don't bring a tripod or physical nd filters. Also, the image stabilization is superior by at least 1 stop. Finally, the battery life is way better in the e-m1. I think you'll enjoy the handling of the em1 with it's deeper grip and better button layout. So imagine going out without a tripod, filters, extra batteries, etc... The d800e is an amazing camera and will give you better image quality if you pixel peep or need to recover cleaner shadows, but I'm assuming your photography skillset in exposure, bracketing, post processing, etc... will overcome any shortcomings you get with m4/3.

I believe the OM5 is supposed to get the new 20mp sensor that is in the OM1. Of course we can not predict the future, but I believe OM System is doing everything it can to become successful. I think for photography, the new OM cameras will continue to offer what m4/3 is best at. Small, light, durable cameras with great image quality. I'd like to see new features that no other camera system offers. This is something Olympus did very well in the past. Also, I'd like to see improvements for videographers in terms of workflow with new features and additional video options like 4k 120 and 422 color. For now, I'm very happy with my system and lenses.

Out of them all, I feel the E-M5 III is the most balanced camera, especially for enthusiasts. It has all the traits of a true M43 camera in that it is small and portable yet powerful. Unfortunately I can't bring myself to buy one because it is not a big enough upgrade to my existing camera, the Lumix GX80. If Olympus would price the E-M5 III as they do the E-M10 IV, then I would be tempted. I feel this is the problem with slowing camera sales these days, the new features are no longer leaps, more like small steps. The prices are still high though. The E-M10 IV is much too high for what it is when compared to the competition. It has no new features either. They even took away features like the custom sets! Crippling models to fit the line up is not the way to go. I hope JIP will reverse this and add custom sets to the E-M10 IV firmware for example.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 3 года назад
Yeah, they really needlessly removed features from the em10 line. The gx80 is pretty awesome, especially for the money. The only reason I see you needing an em5iii is maybe if you get into video. Other than that, the gx80 pretty much has you covered.

After having watched this video, and being unable to afford the new OM1, I purchased a new E OMD Mk IV. I was very surprised, see below, that the camera did not ship with a dedicated charger- more on that below. I have posted my questions on Rob's site, however many may take the view that the questions/issues raised should be posted on a more global generic type OMD/OMS site, if so , could they please provide the relevant link/s? The camera only shipped with the most basic of manuals, only 3/4 pages or so advising of the SD card to use and the battery, which quite annoyingly is not the same as the batteries used in my 2 Pen Fs, on the + was the fact that the battery was fully charged and still has some charge remaining after a good deal of use. How do you charge the battery ? In camera I assume. Given the provision of 2 power cords, I simply joined them and plugged the end with the power prongs into the wall. However, after leaving the battery ( so I thought) charging for some 4 hours, when inspected, there was no increase in the charge level. My notebook is quite old, but has a fast SSD hard drive and 32mg of memory. It is not possible to upgrade the USB ports to USB C ports or a more modern USB than shipped with the camera. Can the wise advise how I can charge the sole battery I have? Shortly, the camera will not be operating at all !!! So far as the manual is concerned, will search the net and it may well be that the manual is available online at OMS Australia/Oceana? I spent an afternoon playing around with the Menu system, which was , at a basic level, similar to that of my Pen F's. However, given my default method of shooting is in Aperture priority, this was going along well enough, until I must have activated some bizarre combination of buttons. The end result is that I cannot take an image in A, without the camera spending a further 20 seconds or so, very deliberately using the noise reduction system! Have never seen this before. Went into the Menu and, so far as I could tell, removed all actions which may have enabled the noise reduction - taking 20-30 seconds after each shot- to finish. All that was left was a totally bland/bright white file which was deleted. Can anyone please tell me how to deactivate the bizarre combination of buttons I have inadvertently activated to have this mega noise reduction process take over the camera ??? When purchasing the camera, I also purchased one of the latest Sony SD 64 gb "" speed demon cards"- not at all cheap, but the camera can read to them so quickly. This OMD takes a burst of images far more quickly than my Pen F's. All my Pen Fs have been set to take all 3 types of images at once. The simple reason is that, while I do not presently have L.R. , C1 etc., I may in the future, and so wanted to capture RAW files, as well as in the Pen F ,in particular, the SF jpgs. This selection has caused the Pen Fs to have an unbelievably slow burst rate, and spend some time reading to the SD cards ( Scandisk 170 gb). The OMD Mk IV is an absolute speed demon by comparison. I look forward to any answers and , as outlined above , referrals to more appropriate sites. Also, I have no doubt that Rob has created detailed videos on how to set up this camera. I have done some basics, going on the great Pen F series he put out some time ago. Could anyone who may know, just advise of the YT video number/s and I will look them up. I have Zoom work commitments for the next working day and will then head to the net to undertake these searches myself. Thanks in advance to all those who have read this long winded post, and of course to those who have responded.

Hi, Robert. As for charging, it seems like something may be defective in the chain of power. Make sure all cables are securely connected. In particular - It's possible you didn't push the cable from the wall into the AC Adapter far enough. If it's secure, either one of the cables or the USB AC Adaptor is defective. Now try plugging your cellphone (or other usb powered device) via it's provided usb cable into the Olympus USB AC adapter. That device should now be charging. If not, then the USB AC adaptor or it's cable maybe defective. Try to plug your provided usb cable that plugs into to the camera into a different usb power supply. This could be another USB AC adaptor - commonly used by cellphones, or try plugging it into your computer's USB -A port. You should see the led light on the lower right back of the camera illuminate to indicate the battery in the camera is charging. If not, try using a different Micro-USB to USB-A cable. If the camera is still not charging, then it's possible the camera itself may have a defect. Ultimately, I recommend you get a separate battery charger. Any third party charger will work. Here is one that should be fine: amzn.to/3JtvTwe # affiliate link As for the noise reduction, double check menu D1 and make sure Noise Reduction is turned off. If it is off, then you next step is to try resetting the camera. First try a basic reset, then go in and turn off Noise Reduction. If that doesn't work, do a full reset, then turn off Noise Reduction. Reset options are in Shooting Menu #1. Note that Noise Reduction is different than the Noise Filter. Noise Reduction has the option "AUTO,On,Off". Noise Filter has the options "Off, Low, Med, Hi". Hope that helps. Please keep me posted.

However, the e-m1iii is really amazing handheld. The ibis is much better and the hand held hi res is great. Also the live nd makes easy work of doing water falls and such. I also like the joystick for af now. You will still want to get a tripod if you don't have one already, but the em1-iii will get you shots you wouldn't normally be able to do without one.

@@RobTrek it's all good. I didn't post this question until later. I'm really torn between the 2, the idea is to not have to tote a tripod everywhere, that's why I'm leaning towards the MKIII.

For the most part. They still have a 5% stake in the new company taking over.

sensor is not the same in 10m4 as at flagship cameras. 20.3MP vs 20.4MP

Most likely they have different part numbers but the core characteristics of the sensors will be the same to match the image processing chip. The only publicly know part number I found is for the E-M1 Mark II which uses the Sony IMX 270. It's never been clear to me whether they mean total pixels, active pixels, or effective pixels when they give specs. The final image size is still 5184 x 3888

@@RobTrek but..if you compare data on dxomark sensor database, you notice that Pen-F with 20.3MP sensor show different ISO value compered the 20.4MP em1m2 sensor (according Peter Gregg column Sports it's ISO performance) and it's almost the same value as the 16.1MP sensor

I'm not arguing, it's just a discussion.

@@JuliusJanulis That makes sense. The Penf uses a 20mp contrast detect sensor, so it could be the same one in the em10 iv. Will be interesting to see if the trupic viii processor will improve the iso performance over the penf trupic vii if dxo ever tests. Thank. :)
