Hi Tony, thanks for the great review, love the channel!! I discovered that you can get headphone monitoring capability using the HLD-8G grip. I do wish more manufactures would standardize having both headphone and mic jacks on their camera bodies though. I know many times I recorded spurious noises and couldn't tell because I couldn't monitor the mic... Keep up the awesome work!

Thank you for the video Tony! It would be great if you can figure out in the following review how the impact of 12 bit (E-M5 Mark II) compared with 36 bit (E-M5) is. I could not find a review covering that until now.

ACTUALLY, you can plug in headphones and monitor the audio in body during filming. The Camera Store put out a video with the actual camera in hand and show the audio capabilities. Also the in body stabilization seems quite amazing compared to previous versions. Cheers

Minor corrections, Panasonic also fails to employ phase detection and Olympus does included it, but only with the E-M1. The phase detection on the E-M1 does work with M43 lenses in conjunction with contrast detection. With 4/3 lenses, it only uses phase detection. In high speed mode you can see the phase detection array on the screen while releasing the shutter with either 4/3 or M43 lenses. I agree that phase detection on the E-M1 was added to bring into the fold those displaced 4/3 lens owners more so than to add any substantial functionality. However, the firmware 3.0 has really improved phase detection on the E-M1 to the point that there is definitely a noticeable difference in its performance versus using the low mode which is solely contrast based. In af-c high speed mode, I find that it takes slightly more time (fractionally) to initially lock onto a subject than the A6000, but tends to be far more accurate and has a higher keeper rate.

Excellent review and thank you for your work. Question - can the provided external flash be used to a higher sync speed than 1/250s or do we have a buy a different flash to do that?

Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your reviews and material, I don't know where you get that energy! I'm considering buying this camera, but wonder how it compares to the fuji xt1... I'd like something fairly compact, because my old Nikon D300 is a bit chunky to carry around and getting a bit long in the tooth. This Olympus is a good size and I like the hi-res option, very exciting technology; I could use it to take images to archive my artwork. The EM5 mark 2 also has a good range of affordable lenses. However, I like the viewfinder on the Fuji better, more capable focus tracking and a bigger sensor for better general photo taking. I find the gps tagging from a phone an interesting prospect, as well as the ability to print wee photos from that fuji printer gizmo with relative ease. Urgh, decisions.... (though it is fun :D)

FYI, the EM5 II's ISO goes to 100 just like all other M 4/3 cameras. From their press release: ISO - Auto, 200-25600, expands to 100-25600

Hey Tony, I'm one that uses the E-M1 because of 4/3rds lenses, so phase detect is a key feature for me. They are largish and completely beautiful! Sealed, fast, and really cheap for the level of quality. I admit, the prices are low because few people want to buy lenses from a dead system--but that's why it works for me. And hey, people buy legacy glass for mirrorless cameras all the time, why not great AF sealed legacy glass? Great preview. BTW, it's nice that Olympus is including a headphone jack in the optional grip. It's a step right. I hope someday

Great review, what lens were they using on the Nikon? The Olympus 45mm/1.8 is a solid lens for right around $250 used, but it would have been really interesting to see the difference with say the Leica Noticron 42.5mm/1.2

Tony liked the review - A comment on focus speeds - My own tests on focusing between GX7/EM-10 vs A7 seem to show the m43 leaves A7 in the dust in terms of focus speed. I tested in multiple lighting conditions and M43 always focused with confidence and much faster. For example A7 would switch to contrast detect in low light situations anyways and would be much slower than M43. Agree on the ISO and noise aspects though.

Tony Northrup According to DxOMark the Olympus OM-D E-M5 has a lowest (base) stated ISO of 200, but measured ISO is 107. Also for the E-M10 and E-M1 (and the E-M5 Mk2?).

Hello Tony, I currently have a Canon T1I with the 18-55 kit lens and the 75-300 sincee 2009. I want to change to a new camera and I am struggling to know which camera will be better. I like the Olympus OM-D EM5 Mark II and the Sony A6000 and the Panasonic GX7. Which of the two will you recommend to buy or which other will you recommend instead of those. I travel several times a year and I want something that is easy to carry to substitute my T1i. Thanks in advance.

Well done, and thanks. I have both the E-M1 and the E-M10. I actually prefer the E-M1 for travel. Although a bit larger than the M10, the M1 is weather sealed when used with the excellent Olympus M.Zuiko 12-40 Pro lens. Weather proofing is important to me for travel; I use the M10 for as a home base, carry around, everyday camera when I'm not concerned about foul weather.

Adobe hasn't released a RAW format for the 40 megapixel shot yet so I think the comparison you are making between the EM5 and D810 is the EM5's regular 16MP shot and not its 40MP one as you said you can download it and evaluate the RAW file yourself. You likely downloaded the 16MB file.

I need buying advice. I love shallow depth of field, but my last DSLR collected dust because it was too big and inconvenient. I'm looking at the Fuji and Olympus lineup - love the compact size of Olympus, but can it still capture the shallow depth of field that I love? Fuji looks good but the size and cost of the system is a good chunk of change more than the Olympus. thanks!
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 8 лет назад
+Jimmer John You can get pretty shallow depth-of-field, you just need the right lenses. There are many fast primes for micro four thirds. Be sure to research crop factor at sdp.io/crop to know how the lenses will compare.

Possible to set "Low ISO" (even in my E-M10 mk II) which goes lower than 200... When comparing MFT with FF - don't forget the optic size + you can't go smaller than a camera that will be comfortable to hold.

Actually I am surprised at the blurry E-M5 II images that DP used to compare to the D810. The lens they used must have sucked because even a E-M5 I does not produce such blurry images. My E-M5 with Leica 25mm at F4 is hyper sharp. So I am not really trusting those images. I will wait for you to take your own pictures with it with a good lens.

Well done, Tony. It's a bit odd that Olympus has three cameras so close: E-M1, E-M10, and E-M5 Mk. II. My question is, who this is for? Why not just get the E-M1 and have the better controls? I agree that the E-M10 is a great, small travel camera. But unless you're a landscape person, can't see why one would get the E-M5 II over E-M1.

I enjoyed your review and comparisons. I was looking at the E-M1 vs the E-M5 II, thinking "But the M1 has phase detection AF." I suppose if I had a bunch of older Four Thirds lenses, that would rock. But I don't so... what's left in the E-M1's bag of tricks? Better ergonomics? Better battery? Seems the E-M5 II has eclipsed the E-M1 in everything else. Couple other things I think you could have thrown in for your comparison to the Alpha a7. I think the lens selection for the M43 standard is better than the Sony's full frame E-Mount lenses. Also, no IBIS for the a7 and I have heard the IBIS in the a7 II is good, but still not as good as the E-M5 II.

The 40mp high res shooting mode is intriguing, but too bad it is only best with absolutely static images. In most uses, probably not the best since almost all situations, even landscape since wind will move trees and clouds, water, etc. Still "life" is questionable as living things move and breath, even subtly. For architecture, interior shots, art and product photography, I can see this high res mode working really well.
@paristo
@paristo 9 лет назад
Every situation where you can use 1" shutter speed, you can use the HR mode. And there is LOTS of situations. Lots of landscape photographs are taken with long exposure and HR mode allows 8 seconds exposures for each 8 frames, and up to 30 seconds delay between frames to give flashes time to cycle power. And it is 40Mpix in JPEG, 64mpix in RAW. More than even new Canon cameras, but with benefit to avoid moiré and other artifacts as it is like Sigma Faveon sensor, capturing all R,G,B colors for each pixel. And combine couple of those with subsampling and your image will look astounding! This HR mode is what makes many Canon/Nikon/Sony user jealous as you can get higher resolution, better colors and tones and all without moiré etc. And just like with any 36Mpix camera and up, you need very sturdy tripod, but no need to add extra weight to eliminate mirror shock to get the shot.

The very nice Panasonic LX100 goes down to ISO 100 nice video Tony as always - I do have the em5 - and yes I see few nicer things like the tilt-flip LCD - and one more Fn button - and MP on tripod - just don't see the need to upgrade - more interested in seeing the upgrade for the Em1 - and yes Phase focusing is needed for tracking AF - both Panasonic and Olympus need to up their game - Panasonic has DFD on the fantastic GH4 and LX100 but still not enough - Yes em10 is nice - but I prefer my GX7's and GM5 in M43 - for travel the killer for the A7 is lack of lenses - and I do not see that improve much fast -
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 9 лет назад
igetsmart The lowest native ISO on the LX100 is ISO 200. This is the case on many cameras--a non-native ISO just over-exposes the lowest native ISO, reducing dynamic range with no particular benefit. I totally agree with everything else :). The Sony lens lineup is lousy.

I agree from the RAW shots - but this is because there has been no software update from Olympus (or anyone else, as far as I know) for processing these high resolution images. If you look at the jpegs, then there is very little difference. I'm a little surprised that you did not notice this.Tony Northrup
@timur7381
@timur7381 9 лет назад
Everyone states 64mp RAW images, 40mp jpegs. My EM1 easily handles 400-500 shots (was on a shoot last night), and I carry 2 spares with me (3rd party, pretty cheap as well). Seen some previews of the 64mp pictures, detail is amazing, so I don't think it will be a gimmick for anyone shooting with a tripod.
@burkerow
@burkerow 9 лет назад
I bought 3rd party batteries as well. They're half the price. The problem with them however is I only get about half the shots with them, so they're not really a bargain at all. The only advantage to the 3rd party batteries that I've found is that they can be charged with a USB charger, which means if I'm totally "off the grid" I can charge them with my solar charger.
@timur7381
@timur7381 9 лет назад
Rod Burke The batteries I bought were a lot cheaper, like 20-25$ for two with a charger, and they have (allegedly) more capacity than original Oly one. Maybe due to the capacity they actually hold up to the original. Although, I don't actually use them that much, for my purposes and with the amount of free time I have, I usually end up using one battery anyway.

@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 9 лет назад
Tecnovlog Who knows? They cram more megapixels into my smartphone camera, so they should be able to put it into an MFT sensor.
@joshuassonjs
@joshuassonjs 9 лет назад
They could do more. BUT the question is why? More megapixels means smaller photosites which means a worse snr. It would reduce the high iso capability of the sensor. 16 mpx is more than enough for large prints. And many high end dslr cameras have only 16mpx. Or even 12mpx for the acclaimed sony a7s. An extra 4 mpx isnt going to make your pictures any better. Just a little sharper with a little more crop space. Or they could focus on enhancing the dynamic range, giving us 14 bit raw images instead of 12, better high iso performance, and inovative sensor stabilization techniques.

I find that this seems like sort of a novelty-edition. I guess this is perfect for people who late to take landscape photoes and want the gear to be as light as possible BUT don't mind bringing a tripod. Seems like a very speciific target audience. I'd wager that they're hoping for a lot of "bleed over" from people with slightly different needs, who'll just think that these specific capabilities are "neat". Certainly an interesting camera, but I don't see this being for me.

E-M5 I & II have base ISO (low) which equal to 100. And the HR image comparison to D810 from dpreview is miss focusd. They have replace it with new pic,
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 9 лет назад
Huang Richard The base ISO is 200; ISO 100 is an extended ISO that's exactly like overexposing an ISO 200 picture. It reduces the dynamic range of the image. Interesting about the D810 comparison--I'll check it out.

Yes, I noticed the image was out of focus the moment you displayed them Tony. Now that you know those images are a misrepresentation of the EM5 II image quality, will you be amending this video?

Actually , the "old" 4/3 lenses from Olympus are very good lenses - especially the top line ones ( you have $2000 to spare?...) - I think they were the first to actually design for digital rather than just reproduce older 35mm style ones....unfortunately they were all designed for the 4/3 sensor ( which happens to be exactly the same size as the m4/3 - that was definitely marketing there..) - so they can't be used via adapter on any larger sensor.....bit of a shame since Oly makes some of the best glass around...
@paristo
@paristo 9 лет назад
The 4/3 was a new format, instead going to 135 format (know as Small Format), Olympus designed a new true digital format as 135 format didn't provide any benefits for digital cameras and got Kodak to manufacture the 4/3 sensor. A 4/3 was the sensor and mount name for DSLR line cameras. But then Olympus designed with Panasonic the m4/3 mount, where they removed the mirror but still use same 4/3 sensor. M4/3 is the mount (bayonet) 4/3 is the sensor format and ratio (and size). What many doesn't know, is that 4/3 isn't a crop sensor. Its mount never was designed to be compatible with common 135 format lenses without adapters like OM. It was from scratch designed format based the common data photographers used with their cameras to capture photos, like most common shutter speed, depth of field and ISO. It was as well designed to ease optical designs (that is proofed) to get higher quality easily and in smaller package for field of view the most photographs were taken. It was as well taken in notice how electronically done processing is improved and how digital technology gets improved. Based all the data Olympus collected for analysis, they designed the new 4/3 format instead continuing to use 135 format as then they would needed to consider using a 135 format half-frame (crop sensor) or full frame without any benefits for most common situations. Hence, m4/3 cameras even today has a two stop better light gathering for common depth of field. That can be used to two stops faster shutter speed or two stops lower ISO (giving same print size) or even use two stops less power in flashes or use flashes from two times further with same power. Like how many has gone trough their photo library and build database what is their most common aperture? Like example, how many 135 format photographer has 20% of photos taken with aperture f/2.8? How many has over 50% taken with aperture below f/2.8? Exactly. Today if someone wants shallow depth of field for portraits, it is very easy to do with a image manipulation software. Far more easier than it was 10-15 years ago (Photoshop was then at about 7.0 version). Today digital photography is far more than film was. Many has more complex cameras than film era and possibilities to adjust them with easy smartphone applications. DSLR is dying and few really as hanging in it, just like few hangs on to Medium Format or Large Format film cameras. Some people should look around, look the ways how people take photos, from what subjects etc. That has not changed for decades. Popularity and ways to get something quickly has exploded. The 4/3 sensor is on winning side, as technology just gets better and better. And we are already pass the quality point that is required, clearly and way over. And what is only getting better with mirrorless is that we can carry smaller and lighter cameras without image quality sacrifice and with even better possibilities to get the better photograph than any DSLR allows because cameras are smaller and lighter. Same reason what made 135 format win 120 format (size, weight, wide lens choice) is the same one that is killing DSLR. Otherwise we all would be carrying a Large format cameras....

In this review i found out that my E-M5 is USB 2.0 :( How I could missed that. From now on, Ill visit your channel and only choose USB3.0 and up from Sony. My vision: Sony A7K ThunderShutter USB 5.01 (K stands for Kurwa ) . For those who made mistake like me, i know where to buy compatible spare battery at very attractive price. 4K i don't care much. Once i showed GoPro 4K footage to my 2012 Mac Pro and I wait for days his response. Since then we both happy with 1080p. 16 megapixel is enough for me i'm not greedy. Phase detection and torch definitely should be introduced on MkIII. GPS i'm missing :( but not that much as USB 3.0

Thank you for the review, Tony! I guess, it would be more accurate to compare not only E-M5 II to D810 (or any other cameras), but also lenses that have been used. We'd definitely get better (in terms of sharpness) image quality with, say, Nikon 105mm f/2.8 then any existing M4/3 Olympus / Panasonic lenses. Even the top-notch Panasonic Leica Nocticron 42.5 f/1.2 will yield Nikon's 105mm f/2.8 etc...

It's funny Northrup complains about the lack of PDAF and 5 minutes later he says it's useless on Olympus cameras. He still cites it on the A7 as a great advantage saying it AFs faster than the EM5 II a camera he didn't even use... :facepalms Same with getting the continuous drive specs wrong on the A7, the AF only kicks in at 2,5 fps, not 4 fps. The fact of the matter is, PDAF is used with m43 lenses on the EM1 when you're doing focus tracking. It's why the EM1 has an edge over the EM5 II in this respect. (9 fps with the new firmware versus 5 fps with the EM5 II). Northrup might be a big Canon head with a large stock of legacy Canon lenses, but plenty of people did use the 43 DSLR system and it's those same people who bought into m43 cameras at first. So while Northrup just "discovered" mirrorless cameras last year, those who were there from the beginning have been asking for better legacy 43 DSLR support and got it with the EM1. Useless for Northrup, useful for others. :)

sebastiaanvanwater Lenses need to be designed to support PDAF, and MFT lenses are not designed with that support. Yes, the E-M1 technically PDAF with MFT lenses, but in practice, it's not used. Because they were designed for DSLRs, the 43 lenses work well with PDAF. But, specifically which FT DSLR lenses are you actually using? Because I've never stumbled across them on eBay or anywhere else, and I'm always looking. That's what has led me to feel like they're not practical. BTW, we now have more MFT gear than Canon, Nikon, or Sony gear. Please be more polite in the future.

Tony Northrup It is supported, fully, starting with firmware 3.0. I like you both, Tony and Chelsea, I bought two of your books, but your prejudice for DSLR, any DSLR if it is Canikon borders on fanboyism. There is so much more to taking great photos than sensor size. I use the E-M1 because it is there for me for more types of photography than any other format with a more than sufficient IQ. I'll keep visiting but I'd appreciate if you could bring more nuance to your judgments.

Jean Montambeault yes no on since 3.0. With firmware 1.x and 2.x series C-AF used always the hybrid mode where E-M1 first focused with PDAF to close by, but then it switched to CDAF to finalize the focus. It was always working with C-AF or C-AF+Trk but the hybrid made it slower than now. Since 3.0 the High Continues Shooting + C-AF gives 9-10 fps because the CDAF was disabled from combination. So now on using H + C-AF use PDAF only and it is radical difference already, while previous was not bad at all as many claims, as it Allowed to capture sports or wildlife there where Nikon D4 or Canon 70D etc. There has been lots of photographers excited about switching from DSLR to mirror less because E-M1 and GH4 C-AF speeds and overall speed being far faster than any DSLR gives, makes huge edge for fast moments. I have been photographing not just birds in flight, but horse races, dog races, rally, fighter jets, indoor basket ball, soccer etc and not problems at all with E-M1. And now with new PDAF 9-10fps mode all m4/3 lenses can be used with it and it is awesome as it helps more when subject movement speed is very radically changing like with small birds that jumps from branch, fly toward you jigging and then quickly break to land on other branch and then jumps again elsewhere etc. And C-AF is best there for small birds when needed to focus trough branches where you just barely see bird eye or head. PDAF is with DSLR totally in troubles in those situations and doesn't know where to focus at all. So if shooting birds where there is lots of obstacles between you and camera, CDAF is the way to go.
