As always MG's are the fairest, fullest, best reviews of products. He offers professional quality videos; intelligent and thorough commentary, pro and con; logical progression of the review through the most important topics; willingness to say a product needs further evaluation (rather than pretending to a definitive omniscience); and none of the mumbling and flat jokes or breeziness of some other reviews. These reviews of MG's are always worth the time.

At this price, this camera should sell with a complete Adobe creative plan for 10 years. I had the intention of buying it until the moment they announced its outrageous price. Thanks for your review Mathieu, you always do a good job.

Many thanks for the review. The other good news is that for those of us who mostly shoot static objects in daylight, without any need for high ISO performance, nor AF tracking ability, nor superfast continuous shooting, nor 4K video, we can buy the original EM1, very good examples of which can be found used online for $500.

Excellent video, Mathieu! (as always). I look forward to in-depth analysis of low light performance, specially in comparison with APS-C mirrorless and other M43 like the GX85. That stability performance is IMPRESSIVE.

Thanks for the clear initial review-look interesting. I just bought the Panasonic G80/85 so I am more than happy with that for now-it has great sharp images and the 4K Photo mode & Post Focus/stacking modes are good too.

The G85 is excellent, hard to ask more from that one and the price is definitely more attractive :)

My first thought was why is this camera so expensive? I know they make it better and better, but consider this is a micro 4/3 priced at $2k is too much. I just hope Olympus is making the right decision. At this price range, there are so many options including full frame Sony A7ii, the A6500, GH5, XT2, any some pro would choose DSLR like Nikon and Canon and even the Pentax. Is money not worth any value these days anymore?

Thank you for this most helpful rundown! Definitely the deepest dive into video features I've found for this camera. There are two small details I'm left wondering about though. 1. Is there an optional crop mode for video in the vein of my old GH-2's "Ex Tele Conv" feature? 2. If so, is it limited to 1080 or will it work with 4K as well?

Is there a flat color profile or LOG color option for video? And thank you for your reasonable, unbiased opinion on pricing! I agree, would be great for Olympus to bring out another OM-D body with PDAF so as to allow use of legacy Four Thirds lenses.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

There is the Picture Mode, which is what I used to record the Cinema 4K footage. It's not a real log though but it gives more DR, something similar to the Panasonic Cine-Like profile.

Thank you. I'm seriously considering buying this camera and your review helps a lot -looking forward to the full review. I agree it's not all perfect but, as you say at the end, when considering the package as a whole (size, weight, lens variety, specs) it makes more sense. If the camera had been priced US$1,500 I would have bought it without hesitation. Given that it's US$2000.00 I'll be paying a lot of attention to the reviews that come out. Switching from the Canon system to MFT will require buying lenses and it can get really expensive quite fast. I might step in with a used E-M5 Mark II instead, to be able to buy more lenses. What got me into this mind-set was realizing that the Canon and Nikon systems are not the leaders in innovation. I want to future proof my investments in lenses (top quality Canon lenses are US$2,000+) and that leaves me with choices like Sony or MFT. Sony lenses are way too expensive for me, so... Olympus and Panasonic, here I come.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

If you don't need the upgraded AF performance or crazy continuous shooting speeds, the E-M5 II is an excellent way to start.

One of the things that I want to know more about the new E-M1 II is how much the new 20mp sensor is better with respect of dynamic range and lower noise levels. I get the impression from your review that the new sensor does not make that much of a difference.

+techenniz: Brain Wadie and others have posted images and comments on the Olympus E-M1II public group on Face Book, relating to the mark II and the PanaLeica 100 - 400mm f4/6.3. Thank you for your informative video. One point, there is no need to "wish" for a dedicated AF joystick as - similar to the original E-M1 (and even the old E3) - pressing the AF target (Fn1) button and twirling the front or rear dial will let you place the AF targets anywhere you wish - vertically or horizontally.Add in the rear touch screen to position the AF target option (if you have a small nose like mine) and you have a couple of options for fast AF target positioning.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
I find using the rear touch screen often inaccurate and my nose always touches it and change the AF point's position as a result. However I agree that using the twin dials is a nice alternative once you get used to it.

Was the old E-M1 capable of wildlife shots? I'm considering grabbing one when the hit rock bottom prices due to the Mk2's arrival. Great review and great camera, still think it's over priced. However the RRP is £1800 and I expect it to be available in the near future for a little less. It's a great proposition for existing M43 users but with the likes of the Fuji X-T2, Sony A6500, Nikon D500 and Canon's 7D MKII currently cheaper it makes it much harder to attract new photographers.

Hi :) Can You tell a performance on high iso in relatively low light (forest during a day - yes it is pretty dark) compared to mark I? I am looking for a camera to the woods and this one seems to be perfect, but I am a little bit worried about ISO. I am ok with grain but psycho-colored dots are not good for me ;)
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
I haven't compared the two cameras side by side but I think the results will be similar. Not sure what kind of pictures you take in the forest but you can use a slow shutter speed and take advantage of the stabilisation. As for color noise, some softwares allows you to reduce color noise separately so they get rid of colored dots and replace it with fine grain instead.

Wow excellent review Mathieu! I was blow away by that 20s shot! Amazing! Never heard of something like that before. This looks like a great camera. I don't think it's too much overpriced considering what specs this little monster packs. And if you're a professional and a good photographer you'll get your money's worth out of this pretty quickly. And I don't mind the MFT sensor. I do mind however these f/2.8 zooms. I think their should've been f/2's, to compensate a little bit for the small sensor. Considering that Sigma has raised the bar with their f/1.8 zooms, Olympus should have at least made theirs f/2's.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
My guess is that f/2 zooms would have been larger and more expensive and nobody would have bought them. But then you think about Sigma and you just wonder where the truth really lies. Their 50-150mm 1.8 is quite large and heavy, but the 18-35mm is more than reasonable (but it has a shorter zoom range as well).

im between em1 and G85 for mainly Macro photography but sometimes wildlife too. i know em1 has much better speed so im thinking of getting one. G85 with kit lens + 60mm olympus macro will be 1500 while EM1 with 60mm macro is 2500$ . do you think it worth 1000$ extra ?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
How often are you shooting wildlife? Static subjects or BIF? The E-M1 II will definitely make a difference with moving subjects especially in difficult conditions (cloudy, subject being far and moving really fast). Panasonic's DfD AF system can struggle with birds in flight and other similarly fast subjects. However if you are talking about birds on a tree or more static animals, then the G85 can do well. For macro they are both excellent and you have a good choice of lenses (I love the 60mm Oly).
@muckach9872
@muckach9872 7 лет назад
for wildlife its mainly statics and sometimes flying birds. but my main concern in flying bees,butterflies,... so i dont know if G85 can capture such speed. also i want to know how different the M43 are compare to FF in macro? i had a7s with 90mm macro which was amazing camera until it was droped into lake :D i love the touchscrean on these cams and how the 60mm is equivalant to 120mm so thats a great bunos for macro. great thanx

Hi Mathieu, picked up my EM1 mark II and 12 - 100mm f4 PRO on 17th December. Managed to take a few (630) BIF images (with the Oly 300 f4 PRO) and I am thoroughly impressed. I was rubbish at taking BIF shots with my EM1's but the mark II is really good. Had it not been for the fact that I was shooting at an auto ISO value of 6400 (it was really overcast and I was shooting at 1/2000, f8) I would have had a lot of keepers. Image after image was in focus. From what I have seen so far it comes quite close to my D500 for BIF.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
+pete draper that's excellent news. I'm currently testing the camera in-depth and took some BIF shots too. It definitely locks faster than the E-M1 and the tracking is more accurate. However if the bird gets closer the camera can struggle. I had a good amount of out of focus shots. Which settings are you using? I find C-AF Lock at +2 to work better.
@klackon1
@klackon1 7 лет назад
+ Mathieu Gasquet: Mathieu, I was unable to test it out as thoroughly as I would have liked, but I did notice two minor issues. I found the camera did struggle to lock focus on birds which suddenly appeared in front of me at close range, but my D500 sometimes struggles in such instances as well. The other slight issue was that I found the EVF lagged slightly when tracking a BIF flying quickly and horizontally from left to right and vice versa. I initally used C-AF TR then switched to C-AF. When I processed the RAW files in LR6.8 I could see no difference. When I was using C-AF TR I did think that it appeared better than the C-AF TR on my D500. I am still setting my camera up at the moment (Christmas stuff keeps getting in the way) and will definatley try the +2 setting. But straight out of the box it is still very impressive. I look forward to your in depth review.

Pete, question if I may about your EM1 and the 300 f4 Pro. How does it focus with 4k video... is it as quick as making stills or are there features turned off in 4k mode? Is the combo able to quickly focus on a subject with cloudy daylight or will it hunt for a while before the subject (distance mostly) is in focus? Is is able to track a relative fast moving animal running towards you?

Hello Mr. Gasquet I appreciate your test and want to thank you for this. One important feature which is not really answered yet in all those tests i saw for now (not only from you) is for me: How good is the low light performance of this cam? How far up is it poossible to raise the ISO? The camera is compared to other high end cams so this is an important question. I have the M10 Mark ll and i am limited on 3200 or 4000. Thank you very much. Regards Marcel
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
Hi Marcel, since the RAW files are not compatible with all the softwares yet, I can't give a final comment about low light performance. For now I don't see a relevant difference in comparison to the other 20MP micro four thirds camera.
@streetlifephotographer1359
@streetlifephotographer1359 7 лет назад
Mathieu Gasquet Thank you very much for this statement. We'll see later on what the experiences will tell us. (For example i have also a Fuji X100T and the low light performance is really great! Also still estonishing good at 12800 ISO. I just testet it again.) I am really looking forward to read a test in low light conditions of this camera. For now i am a little desapointed of the higher ISO performance (4000 or higher) with the M10 Mark ll. There is only a small playground to use...and the pictures get matchy. Fortunately there is an advantage because of the very good stabilisation system beeing able to go down very low with the shutter speed, especially for not moving objects. An important theme so that not should be put on te side especially now for the Em-1 Mark ll now which should be found in the Pro Category. (f.ex.Concerts or shooting animals, birds or whatever in the late afternoon, when the light is not so helpful anymore.) It's not only "all about speed" to play in the upper league. So i am looking forward for a following test...hopefully from you. :)) Thank you very much again. Kind regards Marcel

Do you use a battery pack? My batteries don't last too much even without stressing the camera too much.

I use a battery grip: 2 batteries at a time. battery life is passable. luckily changing them only costs me about 15-20 seconds.

I always like your reviews. My opinion, it's worth $1700, but I'm not buying it at the price their releasing it at. I'll wait to see what Panasonic puts out (the G80 with kit lens for $1000 is a better value imo) or Olympus prices it reasonably.

Why no one states in their review that Olympus EM1-II Pro Capture feature will not work on Panasonic 100-400 lens. It will work only on Olympus lenses. Also there is bug with the Panasonic 100-400 lens when the range switch is set to 5m-infinity. In this mode the camera will not shoot when you press the shutter. It may shoot 1-2 Sec later with all the optics in the lens shaking generating a totally blurred image. Setting the switch to infinity will resolve the problem. This problem didn't existed on the old EM1

The review was made after a press event where I had only one day to try the camera. I clearly state it at the beginning of the video that this video is NOT a complete review. I am currently preparing a full review where that particular information will be mentioned. I also gave you some assistance via Facebook already so I am not sure why you are coping and pasting the same comment on all my videos featuring the camera (including the 4K comparison with the X-T2 where Pro Capture isn't related). As for the bug with the 5m-infinity switch, did you talk with other users that have the same combo? Maybe it's a firmware for the lens that is needed.

Hello Mathieu. For me it is a lost fight. I already gave up and throw 2500$ to buy the Olympus 300mm F4 even that I own the Panasonic 100-400 lens. I am not willing to buy the best MFT sport camera and then stay with a crippled camera not supporting Pro Capture. I hate to throw 2500$ for something that there was no way I would buy if pro capture was supported also with Panasonic lens. Lackaly i have the finance capabilities to throw 2500$ away. Most people don't have this luctery. My goal is to raise the awareness to the lack of Pro Capture support by Olympus so that hopefully someone there will take a technical and not political decision and will fix it in next Olympus firmwares release. If the damm camera can take photos with Panasonic in single point focus, continuous focus, continuous tracking focus, then here is nnnoooo reason beside political and not technical to not support at all pro capture. Olympus don't have even till now a 100-400 lens to offer as an alternative. People like me and others decided to buy the Panasonic because there was no alternative. If bloggers like you and other will complain maybe finally someone in Olympus will listen.

Well as I told you the other day, I forwarded the limitation info to Olympus. But from what I understand, it may be a firmware update for the lens rather than the body. So in that case, the message should be forwarded to Panasonic as well.

Ezra, read the DP review interview with Masamichi Handa where he clearly states that the compatibility is at the format level and not at individual company technical feature level - compatibility at that level would be considered that a bonus. It seems incredibly naive (some would call it dumb) that anyone would spend large amounts of cash without a clear purpose and the requisite due diligence. In the absence of this your relentless attempts to smear a company's reputation seems like cheap trolling. I bought a GH4 for the video capabilities ... should I run out and buy the expensive Olympus pro lenses made for the EM1 Mk II and complain about missing features? Clicking on your profile does not show a professional stills photographer but someone that leans towards video - and the amateur kind. Have you considered saving some money and buying a GoPro ?

The question in my mind is if this actually is the first REAL hybrid camera? I mean GH4 and so on but they never was a tool that was equally adequate for both video and photography before this camera. Perhaps the Sony A7sII or R...
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
The A7s II is definitely more video orientated. I could mention the A7r II (great stills and 4K quality) or several panasonic cameras. Here Olympus pushed the bar further higher with those crazy continuous shooting speeds and reduced rolling shutter.

@ 2:39 moving AF point. The Olympus has best AF moving design ever made to any camera. The mini joysticks to move AF point is inferior to what Olympus has. The Directional Pad (D-pad) is only a third ranked feature among the secondary and primary manners. The primary manner is that you use front and rear dial to move the AF point around. The Olympus design is that in very fast and time sensitive moments you never need to move thumb and index finger from the shutter or from the main dials and never need to loosen the grip to perform main operations. No one else has this design and are inferior to Olympus. Yet many doesn't get this as they see a D-pad and then they think they need to use that for adjusting settings. You can move AF point without looking the camera by exact position you want. You can even reset the AF point to center and start from there if you don't remember your last AF point position. The secondary manner since E-M10 II is the touch screen when using EVF. Many doesn't like it as their nose touches the touch screen. But there is as well huge benefit on Olympus over example Panasonic that the touchpad is relative and not a absolute. The difference is that in absolute mode if you touch a specific part of the display then the AF point will jump to that exact position. So touch a left bottom corner and AF point jumps there. This causes serious problems when accidentally touching touchpad as AF point jumps exactly on that position. But as Olympus uses relative feature, touches doesn't matter as just simple touch doesn't move AF point, you need to touch and drag to move the AF point. So the AF point moves only relatively from the touching point to direction and amount that you touch and drag the touchpad. This is as well far better as it allows easily to do a small moves or specific direction moves that absolute design doesn't support. The third manner is the D-pad, simple and great backup if otherwise not knowing how to move AF point around, but is slow and difficult use just like any ministick as it requires to move the thumb from optimal position of dial and do a repeating movement.

Well, that it is wiz bang awesome no one is complaining BUT priced like previous model from reps is an outlandish lie and perhaps this is a test the waters release to see if they can hold this price point... If it was 1699 I imagine thousands of excited fans like me who love their current Oly models would buy for hte holidays... fail to Oly IMO for the price... maybe they only have a few to sell today and like other models will lower price in spring?

Things that make me go Hummmmmm.... Why, why, why... WHY, did Olympus price there new FLAG SHIP E-M1 Mark ll out its own market??? Were they thinking maybe to compete with NIKON, CANON, SONY or PENTAX full-frame flagship DSLR's? Not for me I'll stay with my Nikon D's and all the glass I already own. I wonder what will happen in the MFT arena with the new GH5 is released in the new year in the same price zone with 6k stills and the best 4K internal codex? To me, for me as a professional, here's the question I see everyone asking themselves as I did... why would a portrait, wedding, sports, wildlife photographer, of a Indy filmmaker spend over 2 GRAND for this? You have so many choices in a FULL FRAME CAMERA that does a good, or better job, for half the price? Isn't the entire idea of MFT market all about staying small, compact, easy to pack use and yet affordable? However, look at the HUGE lenses Olympus it designing for $$$ BIG BUCKS as well. Doesn't make much sense to the MFT world but I wish them luck cause they're going to need it or be forced to drastically drop it's price which is what I see happening. This was a great review. TY :)

Pretty sure you can program the ISO button anywhere. On my em-5 mk 1 I have it programmed on the Rec button. But this camera has more buttons so you can also use one of the function buttons.
@TheFri13
@TheFri13 7 лет назад
You can bind ISO to any FN button you want. But as you don't know, Olympus has best menu system and best user interface out there. But as you haven't used Olympus cameras, you don't know what you are missing. Olympus designed in E-P5 camera a 2x2 leveler. That is a leveler just under your thumb (in E-P5, E-M1) and now just next to your thumb. You flip it between positions 1. and 2. and that changes how the main dials operate (default). So at position 1. the front dial adjust aperture, rear dial adjust shutter speed (aperture is in front of the shutter in camera, so is in dials). Then you flip the leveler to 2. position and now the front dial adjusts White Balance and rear dial adjust ISO (white balance is about light source that is front of the camera, ISO is about sensor gain that is in body, so it is in dials order). So in fast situations when you need to adjust any of the exposure triangle (yes yes, shutter speed and aperture are what controls the amount of exposure) then you will use main dials that are under your fingertips all the time when having good grip, and then you flip a leveler to adjust ISO with the same dial. You can program the leveler to do something else like camera On/Off switch, a switch between MF and AF, or many other features, if you don't like the default shutterspeed + aperture ISO + white balance. And there is no reasons to want better image quality. Make a 30" hiqh quality prints (glossy photo paper) at ISO 6400 and compare it to exact same moment taken photo from FF or APS-C and you will not be able see a difference without spending time to compare specific areas by laying down the prints above each other and swapping between them. These real world image quality tests has been done for death, and there is no difference between 4/3" and FF in that ratio (30" @ ISO 6400). So if you are going to do smaller prints, crop for smaller print or use a lower ISO, you don't see a difference. If you use lower ISO than 6400 on all cameras, then you can increase the print size in the ratio. The body price is ultra cheap for what the camera system offers you. You get the quality, you get the performance and you get ultimately smaller size of the system and camera than with APS-C or FF and even for lower total price for the features. You can either keep going buying a body with just a kit lens, or you can buy a ILC system where you actually have more than just one lens.
