My honest thoughts on the Olympus Pen EE2 which is a 35mm half-frame camera. I’ll be discussing what I like and don’t like about the Olympus Pen EE2 and I’ll be sharing some sample photos to hopefully give you a better idea of whether this camera might be for you. I hope you enjoy this review of my favorite half-frame camera. The Olympus Pen EE has been around for a long time. The Olympus Pen EE first came out in 1961 and was made to be a consumer camera. It’s fully automatic with a fixed focus system, and auto exposure so it’s super easy to use, and really requires no technical knowledge of photography what so ever. There is a little bit of manual override on the aperture side of things but that’s about the most control you have over this camera.

What is a half-frame camera?: 0:54

Size: 2:58
Lens: 4:02

Viewfinder: 5:47
Price: 6:26
Summary: 6:40
Outro: 7:19
So if you have never been introduced to half-frame cameras before, what it means is, the frame is cut in half, allowing you twice as many exposures on a single roll. So if you have a 36 exposure roll, it now becomes 72 exposures which makes it a super cost-effective way to shoot film. I think one of the biggest issues for a beginner film photographer is normally the price of shooting film, which is completely fair enough as it can be quite expensive. But on the Olympus Pen EE, having the ability to shoot double the photos is definitely advantageous.
The only thing you do have to worry about on the Olympus Pen EE2 however is the light meter, which is a selenium light meter. The biggest risk with buying this half-frame camera is getting one with a dud meter, as once it’s gone this camera is pretty much dead. But in saying that, considering how old this camera is and how reliable my meter still is you should be fine but it's definitely something to think about. So I guess my advice would be, keep this half-frame camera stored somewhere where there's not much light like a case or bag, just to protect the meter.
Moving now onto the ergonomics, the Olympus Pen EE2 is by far the smallest camera I have, as you can see it fits easily in my palm which makes it a great camera for taking out on a day-to-day basis. I’ve taken this camera on a lot of overseas trips and even if I don't end up using it, it doesn't really matter because it takes up no space whatsoever. As with most point and shoot cameras, it’s so easy to just throw in your pocket or a small bag, which makes it a very convenient half-frame camera to use.
A huge factor contributing to the size is the built-in lens which on my version is the 28mm f3.5. So for me, normally I prefer to have an interchangeable system, but because this is more of a camera I use for fun rather than anything serious, having a complete system works fine for me. The lens is obviously not the sharpest, but when shooting half-frame cameras, that’s always going to the case, as the negative does have half the resolution which I guess is probably one of the bigger downsides to this camera. So I will add, that on the newer models which are more expensive you are given the option to change lenses so if you want a bit more customization then it could be worth considering.
So with any half-frame camera, it allows you to create these things called diptychs. So what this means is two photos are scanned together allowing for some really interesting pairing. This might not be for everyone, but it could be a really great way to challenge yourself if you are lacking some inspiration. I will make a video sometime in the future shooting with the purpose of creating diptychs because I do see more and more people enjoying this way of shooting. However, some labs will scan the frame individually, and some labs won't, so before processing, it might be best to let them know what you prefer.
So in summary, I personally believe a half-frame camera is a must for any photographer. It obviously doesn't have to be an Olympus Pen EE2 like this one here, but they are so much fun to use and will really push you in a new direction. Personally, I love the size and build quality, it’s super easy to use considering the lack of functions, and having all those photos does take away the stress of film photography. And if I had to pick a downside, I would probably say the viewfinder isn’t the best but once again I don't think that’ a deal-breaker.
So I hope that gives you a better idea of whether this camera might be for you. I know for me, it’s not a camera that I use all the time, but when I do use it it’s always so much fun, and getting all those extra photos feels like such a blessing.

Olympus started the interest in half frame pocket cameras in the early 1960s. This is one of the later models. Most Pen models like this one have a simple two speed shutter which is automatically selected by the meter. The weakness of this model and some others is that the shutter gets sticky and won't open/close. It's a fairly basic repair, but a shop will charge as much as the camera (repaired) is worth. Except for Nikon and Pentax, most of the major manufacturers jumped into the half frame market. Their popularity died quickly with the introduction of very small full frame cameras like the Rollei 35 in the later 1960s.
@bendroege

Very true Randall! I believe 1968 for this model, pretty incredible how many variations they made in the following years. That's such a weird problem that I have actually experienced once before on a friends camera...I guess it's to be expected when they get this old. It's funny, I thought that they would have a resurgence in popularity as a bit of a novelty but doesn't seem like it's going to happen...at least for the time being. Thanks so much for the comment Randall, it's super appreciated. Cheers!

@@bendroege The Olympus Pen models like this one are fairly primitive, even by the technology of their day. After Olympus established a significant market for the format, other makers hopped in, offering models with better lenses, metering, viewfinders, even auto-focus on later models. It's amazing (to me) that the selenium cell meters on these Oly Pens from the early 1960s usually still function. For suburb optics in a half frame camera, Canon made their "Dial" and a series of "Demi" models. They require batteries not made anymore, but you can work around that issue. Konica made one of the last half frame cameras sold, the Recorder. The design is slick, but the build is not that durable. I'd love to have one, but they presently (mid-2023), go used for $300-400, depending on condition. Too rich for me.

@@randallstewart1224 There were also the late 80s half framers, the Yashica Samurai, and the Canon Auto Tele 6. Both were quirky, the Samurai was an automatic SLR shaped like a camcorder, and the AT6 while being a more traditional P&S, could do either half or full frame, with either a wide or tele lens setting when shooting pictures.

The way it works is very simple. The sensor on the lens there powers the meter. The meter needle moves and when you press the shutter the needle is pinned in place by an arm that, depending on the position of the needle, allows for one of 2 shutter speeds and the entire aperture range within those shutter speeds.

Hey Ben, sorry for the late comment. Trying to catch up on some videos while on holiday. I was wondering all the way through the video why all of your shots were in vertical orientation until you explained it. So, assuming I understand it correctly, if you hold the camera normally, it shoots vertically? And if you want a shot in landscape orientation, you turn the camera vertically? That's very interesting. And surprisingly good photos for a nearly 60-year-old camera. Fantastic video, very interesting and educational as always, and great images throughout! Hope you are well. Have a great week and take care!
@bendroege
@bendroege 3 года назад
Hey thanks so much Paul! Haha yes exactly, the vertical orientation is definitely a thing to get used to, but I find it's a nice change-up from the horizontal orientation. With a high res scan, these images can actually turn out very sharp which is awesome. For me personally, however, just having all those extra photos is a major plus. So glad you enjoyed Paul, really appreciate it. Hope you have a great holiday and are staying safe. Cheers!

What a cool camera! Do the scans appear half the quality of a 35mm shot, or is it not super noticeable? Obviously wouldn’t use this for portfolio shots but would be sweet to try out. Nice work 👌🏻
@bendroege
@bendroege 3 года назад
Yeah man sadly it’s half the quality so things are a lot more grainy. But with high res scans it’s definitely manageable. I’ve also noticed that it’s a lot harder work with in post as there’s less detail but it’s not too bad I guess. I have to treat it like it’s own medium in a way so I try not to compare it to a proper 35mm frame as my compositions and overall style changes. Still, such a fun camera to use every now and then highly recommend! Cheers for the comment Trent, hope you’re well my man!

I can only advise to invest in a EES-2 instead. It has 4-zone focussing, so you get sharp portraits and nice subject seperation. Only other PEN EE camera that has zone focussing is the EES, but it can only take ISO 200 film.

Wouldn’t worry too much about it though, all the people I’ve spoken to have never had any issues. Hope it works out :)

If you set the camera to an asa setting (in the lens barrel) that’s in ‘auto’ mode. Now go in low light and see if you get a red flag in the viewfinder upon pressing the shutter release. If you get a flag your meter is working (and finding there’s not enough light). Even if the meter is dead you can shoot it on a an aperture setting (again, on the lens barrel) and it’ll fire at 1/40s. You will of course need to dial in your aperture to the light for an ok exposure.
