Adorable images as ever Derek. F4 is not an issue of concern when shooting with Olympus cameras because of ibis . We are truly blessed with the technical wizardry of our kit and often overlook at the ease we have at our figure tips in this digital age . I very much enjoyed those luscious colours and inviting renditions of your images . Thank you .

@@DerekForss Derek, from a personal perspective , I think somebody like you knows what works and what doesn’t , from all the photos you have had published . This should tell you that you can listen to others, but you do not have to act on those opinions - and I am glad that you don’t . It also shows the scope of Raw files and how spot metering can achieve from a master who knows how to bend the light to get the results that are desired . I really felt I was in those rooms and visit many NT properties.

@@carmenfissenden2530 Striking a sensible balance between what I think as apposed to what others think is a skill that I have acquired over the years. I am keen to keep other photographers on my side even if they disagree with what I say and I hope part of the reason why my overall approval rating from RU-vid is more than 99% (currently 99.4%)!

@@DerekForss It is all about telling a good story and giving sound advice combined . I know that we all have our own stories and will tell them in our own style . Yet, it is invaluable to be reminded of something that could enhance our own work . Your videos give enormous pleasure as your stats bear out . Behind those figures there are countless individuals that return each time to sample more of your work, either from the past or the present . I am therefore confident that the following you have built up will not leave you Derek over the choice of your colour pallet

The 12-100 Pro Lens is my workhorse lens. It is a very fine optic.
@raybridges1927
@raybridges1927 2 года назад
I have been considering purchasing this lens or the 7-14mm as I already have the excellent 12-100mm pro lens. The wider end of the 12-100 fits nicely with the 7-14mm focal range, but I am erring towards the 8-25mm as this would be quite a good range for a portable walk around lens. Lots to consider. i find this style of video much more helpful than those that are more technical, mainly because I can see the practical uses of the equipment and not a diatribe of technical jargon. Excellent photography by the way.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 2 года назад
The 8-25 is more portable than the 7-14. I am not a technical photographer but elsewhere it is highly praised for its sharpness, which I concur. If I was buying from scratch, I would go for the 8-25.

@@DerekForss would you pick 8-25mm over 7-14mm if you were aiming for good photos at night like the ones you presented in the city of London; especially if you like capturing skyscrapers and generally tall buildings in a more architectural type of photography?!
@DerekForss
@DerekForss Год назад
@@nomikism Thank you for your comments. I think the I would use the 8-25 in preference to the 7-14 because of its greater zoom range. I also use the 12-100 for my nighttime shots, see my programme about York at night. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wlehWyqCtOg.html

@@DerekForss Thank you! I enjoyed your nighttime video a lot ! I use lightroom the same way with my night shots ! May I repurpose the question and ask it that way: Which m43 setup of maximum 3 autofocus lenses would you pick for someone that likes to have 1)the widest possible FoV, 2)a fast prime / or a small zoom lens ( that doesn't care much about going over 35mm in 35mm format ) 3)and a telephoto lens that goes further than the 12-100 of the York video and doesn't probably need to be top notch. Urban nightscapes would be in play and should be able to be covered with the ultrawide lens

@@nomikism Unfortunately, I do not feel qualified to answer your detailed enquiry. As mentioned in my original answer 11 months ago, I am not a technical photographer, but a creator. Therefore, when I pick-up a camera or lens, if it does the job I am not too concerned about its technical merits. This, I acknowledge is not much help for someone thinking of buying a lens or camera. You may find that my experience with a 12-200 lens a few years ago helpful. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-khDuSa3D_Q8.html. Otherwise my experiences with the 12-100, 8-25, 7-14, 12-50, 14-150 and 14-42 lens, all of which have RU-vid programmes, are the limits of my technical expertise but the results may convince you.

Thank you for NOT making a technical review. As always, your photography is gorgeous. You have made me think of doing a series on the local churches here in San Diego. That lil 8-25 is a lovely little lens. It sorts of reminds me of my 17-35 D lens from Nikon, that would be 16-50 on a film camera, nice range for a walk about lens. I have the 12-100 and love it, also, being retired now on a fixed income, no new stuff for me. I have a ton of stuff to experiment with and learn how to use. Thank you for sharing 😊

Thank-you for your excellent review. I received this lens along with its two f4 counterparts as a present nearly two years ago, and I’ve never used them as I’m basically a Prime Lens person; I started my photography in the late 1950s. All I can say is after playing around with this lens today is that it is going to get some serious usage in the very near future.

Your videos are so helpful as we're about to make a major investment in equipment (I've shot Olympus and another major brand and a decision is being made on which way to go.) The music Was VERY much a positive to the experience of the video. I hope to get a 4-25 soon; thank you so much for this video! For the flickering-lights shot near the end, did you use a tripod; was it a movie, or sequenced stills?

Hello Derek, my first time to one of your videos and what an interesting one may I say. You give just the right amount of technical information and, for me,some useful little snippets as well. Such splendid photos which is really what it's all about along with your very measured and precise presentation. As I have only started taking my photography seriously over the last few years since retiring, I am still learning with the aid of my EM 10 mk 3 which has recently taken over from the mk 2 I had been using for nearly five years but unfortunately the lens has failed twice along with the screen. Despite the reliability issues I still have faith in the Olympus gear and will stay with them. I have to ashamedly admit that your name was new to me but in fact came up in conversation recently on one of Rob Trek's photo chats. I lived in Dorking for quite a while through my teenage years in the 60s (now near Swindon) and also attended Sondes Place School as I see you did by your Facebook details. Wishing to find out more,I started watching your photo walk series starting with St Martha's Chapel which I remember very well as my parents lived in Halfpenny Lane for a number of years. All on all a small world! Keep up the good work.

I am so pleased that you have discovered my videos, I have over 200. I was born in Dorking but now live at Caterham on the Hill, but maintain connections with the old town. Surprised that you have experienced technical issues with Olympus cameras. I have used them since 1998 without problems and some of my gear, like me, are getting rather ancient! Thank you for getting in touch.

Ah, some new intro music! I find your selections to be monumental, especially Edvard Grieg! Your music has placed an “ear worm” in my coconut! I enjoyed this video, especially the locations you took me to around London! But, I have an idea for you to consider, perhaps you could intersperse actual video of your walks with the odd photo image. You speak of these wonderfully named towns and I, sentenced to life in Atlanta, have no idea where they are, or what they look like! It would be a kind of travel segment(s). Just a thought… Thanks for another excellent video and some truly beautiful images! You are the master! Sean

Hi Derek, great video once again; both entertaining and instructive at the same time! Beside the info on the lens, I very much enjoy your locations in South England! One (probably very stupid) question, if I may ask: you increase the ISO factor, but at the same time you use a lower exposure value of - 0,3 EV; why not leave the ISO factor at 200 and use the Exposure value at 0? Best regards, Erwin.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 2 года назад
Thank you for your comments. Generally, I underexpose by -0.3EV to avoid burnt-out highlights and beef-up colours a bit, which I forget to cancel when I increase the ISO. I don't think however, that -0.3EV would make much of a difference to the ISO when it has to be increased.

Comparing the 8-25 Pro to the 12-45 f4 Pro do you find one has a better image quality over the other ?
@DerekForss
@DerekForss Год назад
Hello David. Thank you for your enquiry about Zuiko lenses. Unfortunately, the 8-25 Pro Lens was on loan from (then) Olympus, so I had to give it back. That was over a year ago, but I am being allowed to keep the 12-45 Pro Lens. I find the quality excellent, comparable to my trusty 12-100 Pro Lens but I don't think that I have sufficient expertise to make an informed comparison. I don't regard my programmes as reviews, but experiences showing likeminded photographers what is achievable with photographic examples, and a little bit of information as to how they were done. All good wishes.

Well composed images Derek. This look,s a superb optic however it is circa £850 used! Way out of this pensioner,s budget. I have the Lumix 20MM F1.7 and find that sufficient for most scenes, a tiny optic in the spirit of M4/3.
