Amateur Historian reacts and breaks down Saving Private Ryan (1998), more specifically the OMAHA BEACH landing part taking place on D-DAY, Normandy, 6 June 1944. It covers the attack of men of the 2nd Rangers and the 29th infantry Division at Charlie and Dog Green sectors.

I can't speak to the events of WW2 obviously, but i am a veteran combat medic who served in Afghanistan. The scene where the guy who has lost his arm and stumbles around looking for it is a bizarre and terrifying reflection of reality. In these moments of high stress and trauma, the brain will for many people switch to focusing on small, meaningless tasks as a way of focusing instead of panicking. I've seen people act the same way, like a man who had been shot and almost blown up completely focus on trying to put together a broken flowerpot next to him instead of retreating to get help. Another man who had a badly damaged arm with chunks of his hand missing was obsessing over his helmet being full of dust. Combat reactions are impossible to foresee. Personally, i once got completely locked up when putting a man in a bodybag. His leg would not lay down in a natural way because of damage, and i tried correcting it many times over, probably almost twenty times before i realised i was obsessing over a pointless task, and those moments are still part of my PTSD to this day almost 10 years later. I can't imagine the burden on the veterans from ww2 where ptsd was seen as disgraceful in most places.

That scene in this movie was one of the most disturbing. It's so, I don't know how to explain it. It's so un-human like to see someone react this way to a disaster that bad. It's depressing to a point.

People can react to mental shock in a myriad of ways, and you're right, it's unnerving to see in some cases, since we expect to see certain reactions that would make sense - like crying,screaming, or with anger,fear, or anything inbetween - but often the reaction that actually occurs can seem robotic, or like the person is sleepwalking, "not all there". In a way that's what it is - the brain quickly decides you shouldn't have to deal with reality right now, so it locks onto a distraction or a simple task, and shuts everything else out. I guess it blunts the trauma in the moment - but we know in the modern world that stuff like that will scar people for life.

The information the Cpt and Sgt give in the Higgins Boat is not a sign of "Badassery." It was the leadership putting out last minute reminders and advice before hitting the beach. Kind of a way to get their heads in the game. As a former NCO in the Army, this is something I used to do, even in training. It is a common practice.

one interesting aspect that i wish this historian had mentioned that while the 2nd Ranger Battalion had not been in combat before the Fictional Capt. Miller and Master Sergeant Horvath had both been in combat together in North Africa apparently Sicily and Italy. While its possible that the writer simply did not know this, it makes you wonder how they ended up in the 2nd Ranger. My first guess is they were from one of the 3 Ranger Battalions that were wiped out trying to break out of Anzio Beachhead. This would explain Miller's sever PTSD

I always took as Miller and Horvath talking to their men like they’re amateurs, reminding them of basic things that could end up saving their life.

I do partially agree, as them being new to fighting going over the training that way it helps keep some order. “Plenty of feet” good combat spacing, more or less just space out so they have to use more ammo to try and hit you.

In stressful situations people forget basics pretty fast, hence the necessary reminder. I've seen people in martial arts schools forget simple parrying and blocks and lose a sparring session for that reason.

@@VAZZ8876 Miller and Horvath are battle hardened veterans at this point. Most of the other men in the boat with them are probably going into combat for the first time and are nervous and scared. The experienced leaders are reminding them what they should focus on and do.

Port side and starboard basically means left and right side in NAVY terminollogy. Even though these men were rangers, they still used NAVY expressions while they were on board the Higgins boats.

Well the film condense the most horrible things that happened through several hours at the worst landing spot into 20 min. It's not like the actual landing hit this kind of opposition. This was a well planned landing that caught the Germans off guard.

It may have felt like it, but, based on actual aerial photos of the beaches, the real defenses and after action reports, this beach scene is clearly not historically accurate. It’s more like a collection of horrible things various soldiers saw and experienced across miles of beach over the span of several hours, all condensed down into a small 20 minute battle scene.

8:21 *"Portside stick, starboard side stick, move fast and clear those murder holes":* Basically he's telling the troops to stick to the sides of the landing craft and not the middle, the murder holes are ambushing points, if the troops stick to the sides, it'll be harder for the machineguns to hit them in contrast to them being in the middle, well in theory atleast, he's basically telling them to stick to the sides, and get out as quick as they can looking for cover. *"I wanna see plenty of feet between men, five men is a juicy opportunity, one man is a waste of ammo.":* I wanna see alot of spacing between you guys, five men together is a great opportunity for the machineguns to point at you, one man alone is a waste of ammo for a burst fire. *"Keep the sand out of your weapons, keep those actions clear. I'll see you on the beach":* Don't let your weapon get dipped in sand, mud or water, or it won't work and will jam, "keep those actions clear" either means that keep your weapons on Safe until ready to fire, or just keep it in working condition in general, taking those factors above into account.

Just wanted to add that a contributing factor to the seasickness’s was that the uniforms were impregnated with a chemical that would help ward off the effects of gas weapons if they had been used that day. Unfortunately whatever the chemical was, it had a bit of a nauseous odour that combined with the rough seas and large breakfast certainly didn’t help the situation.

the talking in the higgin's was actually just regular military talk. US military has a lot of slang that an average civilian won't recognize, so it's understandable that it was mistaken for "badass gibberish", however when you figure out what they're saying it makes perfect sense and is actually a nice touch

Machine guns to suppress, artillery rounds to do the damages. Even if a machine gun can fire stream of bullets, that doesn't mean that every bullet will hit something, let alone aiming while firing. Artillery are premeasured to fire certain distances, so they are extremely accurate in defensive positions.

17:47 I played a game called Hell Let Loose as the Germans defending the beach. I was a machine gunner and my squad positioned itself from such a casemate. Held off the enemy team for half an hour racking up maybe a hundred kills. The soldiers inside the landing craft were relatively easy pickings (try controlling a machine gun shooting at something a few hundred metres away). The ones who spawned next to the landing craft had ti wade through water and were so slow. The survivors had to run a few hundred metres across the beach to get out of my field of fire. Our defensive position got overran when my machine gun ran out of bullets but the enfilade fire was devastating while it lasted. Lesson learned, playing as the allied forces attacking on D-day is not fun. On another note, my squad did not have access to a pak43 because that would have made the game horribly unbalanced. Without armour no way would the allies be able to secure a beach head in the game.

@@dmknght8946 Project Reality is a Battlefield 2 mod that's over 15 years old, I don't think most people want to play it. I still play PR, but it has like less than 2,000 dedicated players left total and rarely more than 200 online at once. It's not a very recommendable game.

The morning of D-Day, at around 3:00 A.M Soldier climbed into their landing craft. They waited until 6:00 A.M, slowly creeping up to the beaches, at 6:13 A.M is when the main landing of the 29th infantry at omaha east happened. Men of the 116th regiment landed (Stonewall Brigade) Landed at Dog Green. The men were expecting craters all over the beaches to hide in, but the bombs used earlier didn't land on the beaches, but on the bluffs above.

What may not be very well known to the public is that Spielberg felt that if they put the bunkers in the correct distance, that the scene would not feel as... shall we say, intense, so he told the set crew to put them closer. Another thing is that nearly 200+ Irish volunteers were asked to attend as the soldiers on the beach. Another thing, the French government would not allow the filming of the D-Day landings on their beaches. So it was filmed in Ireland.

What I always say about movies like these is in order to keep the attention of the viewer, or at least the non-historically interested viewer, they still need to make it a movie, and not a re-enactment. This is a fantastic base to teach real history off, while still keeping it historically realistic.

there are multiple elements that don't make military sense but do make movie sense. I can see why Spielberg picked that big gray bunker as the center piece of the scene- its big gray and intimidating, Its the first thing we see when the Ramp goes down and it being burned out makes the ending sequence of the intro scene. Its sort of like a mini-villain for the scene that functions as the sequence antagonist.

You should cover Simple Histories video on Heinrich Severloh, a German soldier who served on Omaha Beach who came to be known as "The Beast of Omaha in which he claims to have killed at least 1,000 US soldiers after firing the MG-42 for 9 hours straight. He served in the resistance nest WN-62.

The longest day is a little bit better historical accuracy but it doesn't want to show the same thing as private Ryan. Spielberg wanted to show how war is terrible. The longest day wanted to show how much time they spent stuck on the beach

@@minisamearizaku2483 yes I do agree with u, don't get me wrong on that but I've also heard a veteran say that this was realistic on how it recreated the trauma and feelings theses soldiers were going through during the battle but not the actual battle as History Legends is explaining how the actual battle went and looked like. Ether way I feel we can both agree that this is a good movie

@@minisamearizaku2483 this scene has lots of faults, none can deny that. Beach is too short, bullets traveling in water, obstacles were done wrong, german positions are wrong. Also most of the 2nd rangers were destined to point du hoc, not to Dog Green though. Rangers were "special" forces in their way, even though still green. It's a great scene, but it could've been even better.

It's excellent visual story telling. In seconds, and without saying anything, you know a bit of that guy's backstory. It's just 1 guy doing it, so it's not like the movie makes a statement about that being a normal behavior among soldiers. This is also done with little effects where a guy's wedding ring is clearly visible for a seemingly long period of time, one guy is chewing lots of tobacco, another guy is praying. It humanizes characters so you don't see them as being a bunch of robots.

My great grandfather was on Omaha. I sadly never got to meet him but my father always retold his stories for me. He said, that when they heard and saw the slaughter, my great grandfather and 1 other man just ran and never stopped running across the beach. Hoping for the best, and it worked.

I'm guessing Captain Miller's name comes from one of the replacements in Easy Company of Band of Brothers fame. Spielberg and Hanks would of course later make Band of Brothers into a TV miniseries. The inspiration for Saving Private Ryan is the story of Fritz Niland of the 101st. His story his told in the book Band of Brothers on the same page that Private Miller is also mentioned.

Fun fact the 7th boat in the scene where it shows them all before the initial combat was a camera boat, it’s also the boat that is used for the CGI of the guys being slaughtered, there where only 5 or so guys on that boat and they are the ones who go over the sides.

in one of the scenes on omaha, the medics are trying to save the battalion surgeon when one of the medics gets shot in the canteen, first theres just normal water spilling out but a couple seconds later the water turns red, thats a pretty cool detail spielberg adden in.

I have seen many veterans give interviews and recall D-Day. Many soldiers died in the water, but, after going over the side, to avoid incoming rounds, this soldier said (I don't recall his name, regiment or sector), he knew he was going to drown, but, lot's people were eager to get to the beach to try and stop the sea-sickness, over anything. Carrying 100lbs of soaking wet kit, as he realised he was sinking, before he even had a chance to panic or struggle, he was upside down, headfirst in the water, as that's how he entered the water. Suddenly, he popped up out of the water like a beach ball. The reason? He had his helmet on (many puked in theirs or they obscured view, and subsequently removed them, but even more just failed to use the chin-strap) and that is what saved him. Others had theirs on in the water but the chin-strap was not secured. I remember being amazed at how little air is needed to overcome such weight. I'm still amazed to this day.

also the artillery is typically fired on pre-planned targets. The kill/Casualty radius on indirect fires is usually pretty big so the round doesn't actually have to land directly near you to still hit you

In 1994 me and my dad talked to an Omaha beach veteran in Normandy and he told us he was laying in the water until midday or something. Can't remember the exact time but I will always remember that. So when we watched SPR later doing the action in 20 minutes I knew that was bullocks. On the extreme opposite side some boat teams landed at Omaha beach were untouched as they landed in between the WN's. But they didn't fight the WN and went straight to the objective more inland.

One of my old friends grandfathers who fought in Omaha couldn't finish even halfway through the first scene of the movie and had to turn it off because it was way too close for comfort.

Two things here: 1. First of all, you are absolutely right, and it is not just the motors. Generally, gunfire, especially machinegun fire is not represented accurate in movies. The weapons are simply much stronger as depicted. That means that these wooden, mine-carrying obstacles are not only facing the wrong directions, they would also not make for a cover, since those MG42 rounds would just penetrate them. I think even 7,62mm NATO rounds still penetrate an average of 30cm of round wood, depending on the kind of wood. 2. You are perfectly right about the water, it's actually even worse. There have been videos made by the Mythbuster, FullMag and the SlowMoGuys (all easily findable when searching for "bullet water" here on RU-vid where you see that not only the projectiles would lose their energy quickly in water... actually, they would in theory still reach deep enough, but they would simply shatter due to the big resistance in the water and their high velocity.

Your stamwnts about the 29th are very true. How ever these men are not in the 29th, they are the Deconed Ranger Battalion and they were veterans. The idea of them peeking over the Gunnels is a joke, they knew better than to expect an easy landing from bitter experience. The "Pep Talk" is something every company, Platoon and Squad does as they land on a beach, LZ or dismount from an APC, you always keep reminding each other to keep your intervals, don't bunch up, keep moving etc. I never landed on a beach but did do several major assults in my time and all that seemed quite accurate to me.

This is not a "pep talk", they are giving instuctions about movement and if soldiers are in group they will become easy target for mg 42 and 34, "five men juicy opportunity one men waste of ammo"

I don't remember all the details, but back in the day, here in Germany, when this movie was in theater, an old man watched this, got a heart attack, and sadly died. He was a German soldier at Omaha Beach, scared to death by a massive Invasion Force in front of him, and the threat of a P08 Luger behind him if he doesn't fight. He did fight, while crying & pissing himself, but did get away & survive the war. Something like that. Some details were in the papers, like old letters, wittnesse accounts. He survived, just to die in a theater, in his mind probably back at Omaha Beach, many years later. Big thing in Germany, they kinda tried to cencore this part, or remove the whole movie from the theater, because Germany 1990s. 🙄 Nothing happend. Long story short, it's pretty impressive how brutal this whole scene is, the emotional terror, yes, there are some errors, definitely, but if it "kills" someone who watches this movie, there has to be some hard truth to it. This movie in general doesn't fuck around, it's scary... 😅

Correction for the information that Cpt Miller and Sgt Horvath were giving to their men. It was not a sign "oh we're badass, let's do this thing here" or something like that. They were giving instructions to their fellow Rangers that could save their lives. Later in the film, it was said that both Miller and Horvath served both in North Africa before D-Day.

When Capt Miller was pep talking his men he was giving them some last minute advice, same SFC Horvath. It wasnt meant to convey badassery, "Port side stick (the squad lined up on the port side of the boat), starboard side Stick (squad on the starboard side), move fast clear those murder holes (get out the boat quickly, and make way for the others)". "I wanna see plenty of beach between men (in other words dont bunch up), 5 men is a juicy opportunity (a machine gunner can drop all 5 of you if you group up) one man is a waste of ammo (a soldier moving by hisself wont make as a tempting a target as a gaggle of troops moving close to getting)". I get that you're a historian, but you dont seem to understand military slang and speak. More over, noobs or not they were still trained well enough to know what their jobs were once on the beach. The officers were trained as well as the enlisted. And as far as Capt Miller and SFC Horvath were concerned, they were battlefield veterans as it was stated they both had been serving together since the battle at Kasserine Pass. Its not that hard to imagine that they were Transferred to the 2nd Ranger Battalion at some point from their previous unit.

While the film was in production, a friend of him living in London saw someone earnestly reading a copy of the script on the Underground (subway). When the film came out, he recognised him as the soldier in the landing craft who grimaces as everyone around him throws up, briefly visible on the left at 07:03!

I’m torn on SPR. I absolutely love it. I think it’s a technical marvel but it’s obvious Spielberg took many artistic liberties over historical accuracy. I wish he would’ve been more accurate but who am I to question Spielberg.

@@huntclanhunt9697 its not even about wasting a Ranger Squad- its more about having such a low chance of sucess as to be laughable. Anyone in that Situation would realize that there is almost no chance of finding one soldier from the 101st Airborne until the fighting was mostly over and the 101st was back in reserve. I mean no one would have any idea where to start to figure out where Pvt. Ryan was. One big plot hole for the film is how quickly they report Sean Ryan's death to the war department, and they get the news to the mother. in reality the mother would only find out about Sean Ryan's death after the main D-Day campaign was over. it would take a few weeks at least and given the number of KIA reported it take longer. By the Time the war department found out about it James Ryan would either be dead, wounded and in a hospitable or sitting in a 101st Camp in England preparing for their next operation. Of course then we would not have a movie.

Actually after I play a lot of Triple A WWII Game in nowaday, I really want to built my own WWII Game that show horrors of war and based on historical events on each side but too bad that I don't know anything about creating game, however if I can built the game I really want you to advice us about historical accuracies. P.S.Your video is very great, keep up on it.

at around the 8:50 mark in reference to the pregame pep talk. while it is true that most of the men were green you need to keep in mind that the Captain and the Sargent doing the talking, as explained later in the movie, are experienced soldiers from the Tunisian Campaign and took part in the battle of Kasserine Pass therefore they do have the knowledge and experience to bring the men on their craft up to speed on what to watch out for as they have prior experience fighting Germans, Vichy French and Italians.

Regarding the higher concentrations of German MGs on Omaha: was this because the German garrison was more densely deployed there, or was it more that the unit assigned to that sector was better-equipped?
