Tribes, wars, colonisation, empire, rebellion, independence and reconstruction - this is the compelling history of the Gulf state of Oman, from the 16th century to the present day.
Oman began as a trading nation but was then colonised by the Portuguese. Local Omani leaders later expelled the Europeans and went on to use their own powerful navy to build an empire that, at its peak, stretched from the Arabian Gulf halfway down the coast of East Africa. But the British then arrived in the region and used their own considerable naval power to gain control of the Gulf route to India.
The plot then thickened as Britain’s deals with the sheikhs on the northern coast caused them to separate from Oman itself - and ultimately led to these Trucial States forming the UAE a century later.
Oman played an important role in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and is sometimes known as "the Switzerland of the Gulf" because of its neutrality.
This documentary takes us up to the death of Sultan Qaboos in 2020, his succession by Sultan Haitham and the appointment of the new Crown Prince of Oman in January 2021.

I love Oman very much. I am originally from East Africa and was fortunate this summer to visit Fort Jesus in the coastal Mombasa where guides have given us the history of the Turkish conquest, the Portuguese invasion, the British empire and how the Oman Arabs who have enlisted the support of the Baluchi warriors from Pakistan have defeated this great empires who have enslaved the population . The remnants of the occupation is still present at the Fort including the body of one of the famous Portuguese general. My kids enjoyed the history and subsequent independence of Kenya.

This history is critical and has played an important role in the lives of millions - from Oman to Mozambique - Zanzibar, Pemba, Mombasa - to Goa, India and beyond. The rulers of this region figured out 500 years ago - how all of humanity mattered and could like in harmony. Much like the idea of being a World Citizen - easily said but difficult to attain. We owe a lot to the people of the present region in the Middle East - riddled with conflict - today the United States aids Saudi Arabia - to kill and maim - infants, children, youth, young adult, Elders - those with comprised health. The world is ignorant of history and less of history that matters. These indigenous tribes go back 100,000 years - we may not believe it - but the empirical data is there - for all the world to see. In the middle of Ramadan this video - should allow us to review the atrocities of the invaders - the Portuguese, the British in this region in the 16th Century.I have travelled and seen for myself this region - the video bring new light to the era of enlightenment. Much like the Six Nations in the United States - tribes who practiced democracy and the Long Cabin. In this case Islam led by leaders having wisdom - took control their destiny. Only for the invaders - the colonizers - to ruin harmony and more.

Thank you, what a wonderful lesson in history. We used to be taught these lessons in school in history classes, sadly this no longer happens in Australia, to my knowledge.

As a Portuguese our presence in the Arabe and indian ocean are not much spoken and the same goes to southeast Asia. We mostly talk about Moçambique, Goa, Diu and Macau. Its honestly facistaning to me that we had that much presence in Oman despite the otaman empire. Oman seems like a well balance country with the mind on the right place. Cant wait for one day to travel there.

us, Omanis, we have studied pretty much alot about the presence of Portuguese in Oman. You are welcome to visit. I recommend you to come between Nov to Feb. the weather is nice. Other than that is extremely hot except if you plan to stay in south Oman in summer. The weather is tropical and fully green covered land.
