Great video Ted! I have a question for you....I have a 1988 Four Winns with this drive, the drive and engine are both still good, but it has been used and moored in salt water for about 20 years. When I do run into a problem (for example things that won't come apart like a trim hose fitting), does it make sense to refit the boat with a later model used transom mount? I do have an OMC Cobra transom mount that matches my year and model from a fresh water boat, that is in excellent condition. That brings up another question, would it make more sense to sell off all the OMC stuff and change it over to Mercruiser? I know this would be more expensive, but would avoid the finding parts and mechanics problems with OMC. It is hard to find marine mechanics who will still work on Cobras, I have done a lot of work myself but sooner or later you need a real mechanic.

It does all at up to cost. If you have a good fresh water transom assembly, it would be an ideal way to extend the life of the boat. If it is indeed a 1988 four winns it is now 36 years old. Something to consider.

The “do not” remove plug hiding behind the cobra sticker; if you remove it, can the fastener that holds it in place damage anything if it drops into the water passage?

You don’t want it moving around and getting stuck in a water passage or hose! Pull the drive, fish it out & fix it the right way…

What gear lube for this drive? 80w-90 or Sae 90? Paired to GM 5.7L
@tedsmarinerepair8956
@tedsmarinerepair8956 2 года назад
All US made recreational drives including cobra, alpha and bravo, sx, dps use 85w90. I always recommend using factory gear lube when the drive is covered under warranty or extended warranty. Fully synthetic is what volvo penta recommends.

I have water coming in where the steering arm is whenever the back of the boat dips into the water. Is there a bellows or boot that needs to be replaced there? How do I stop that?
@tedsmarinerepair8956
@tedsmarinerepair8956 2 года назад
It sounds like the seal which rides on the steering arm has failed. you will need to remove the engine and disassemble the transom assembly to replace the seal
