@Modern Healthspan please consider doing one on antioxidants in relation to exercise 🙏 I find that topic a bit frustrating. Just saw Siim Land mentioning a NAC study that showed adverse effects in combination with resistance training several days after. Actually thought Glynac was ok since it works more on your natural defenses. Wanting to take multiple antioxidants while also working out every 3rd day is getting kinda confusing.

Nice video. I wonder why ALA is not recommended? Vegans who recommend getting Omega 3 say ALA is a perfectly good source, whereas keto and carnivore proponents often say ALA is not a good source of Omega 3. What's the science behind it? Also regarding the daily amount, just a couple teaspoons of flaxseeds or chia seeds can give several grams of ALA. If it is processed in a smoothie, the husks will not get in the way of absorption. Also, one 4 oz can of mackerel or sardines can have as much as 4g of EPA and DHA combined, along with almost 30g of protein, and it only costs $1.50. Given such sources of omega-3 it seems like supplements are unnecessary. Consuming these over the last several months, my LDL dropped 50 points and my HDL went up 25 points. It is possible that the change in my cholesterol numbers is not related to my Omega-3 consumption. Is change in cholesterol one of the known effects of increasing Omega-3 consumption?

Ala needs to be converted to Epa Dha but the coversion rate is only 2-5 %

I love all of those fish. Mackerel and anchovies are easy to obtain at affordable prices and fresh (unprocessed). Mackerel is easy to clean once you know how. So, I can add them to my diet every week. Anchovies most days. Just love the taste of them and miss having them if I don’t include them in my meals everyday.

Interesting information. So I'm still not clear on the dosage. He mentioned 1200 milligrams a day taken for 4months will get your levels up. Is that a total daily of DHA and EPA combined? Also, from everything i've read, they say to limit eating Albacore tuna to a few times a week, as they are large fish and have high levels of mercury too.

I would go with 6 grams omega 3's 2-1 Epa to Dha ratio. Talking about triple strength fish oil capsules.

Several times oxidation levels were concerning when supplements were measured. They do get rancid when they sit too long on shelves.

True, but check Xtend-life life omega it puts that worry to rest. I was using it for 20 years now, the highest quality omega fish oil.

always check capsules for clarity, if it’s cloudy it may have gone bad. Better though is to get liquid form (so u’ll taste if it’s rancid), bottled in dark glass with nitrogen flush to remove oxygen and to prevent oxidation during storage. Small size - because once opened, oxygen will have access to it and oxidation starts, so u want consume it within 2 weeks…also once opened, store in the fridge to slow down that process as well.

The EPA to DHA makes little sense to me. For example, in some measurements, wild sockeye salmon has about twice as much DHA as it does EPA. A 155 g serving of sockeye salmon filet has: 2.2 of total omega-3 including 463 mg EPA, 144 mg DPA and 868 mg DHA Somehow I am doubting that an EPA only fish oil supplement is healthier than wild caught salmon

I don't think you can write off flax oil. One can make a rough comparison to plant based ALA to fish oil. Research in the British Medical Journal reported that eating plant based omega 3 ALA provided significant benefits, The researchers found that a high intake of ALA was associated with a 10%, 8%, and 11% lower risk of mortality from all causes, CVD, and CHD, respectively. See: Dietary intake and biomarkers of alpha linolenic acid and risk of all cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality: systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of cohort studies, : BMJ 2021. In a separate study researchers found that fish oil supplements were associated with a 13% lower risk of all-cause mortality, a 16% lower risk of CVD mortality, and a 7% lower risk of CVD events. In the rough comparison above, ALA did pretty good, but not as good fish oil.

As your guest admits, people have been studying this since the 1970s but can't show any benefits of Omega 3 that are statistically significant. I think it comes from the history of using castor oil, which was one of the first dietary supplements ever used.

Hi Paul, thanks for your comment. Dr Harris did not say that, what he said was in one study EPA and DHA together did not show a significant improvement whereas in another study EPA on its own did. There have certainly been trials which show significant benefit but there have been others that have not.

There are studies that omega 3 doesn’t prevent heart attacks , so for heart health only that could be the case. But there are so many other benefits

Interestingly, the longest lived Sardinians (probably the longest lived of all the Blue Zones) live in the interior in the mountains.......the longevity effects are not seen in the coastal regions. Ironically , they eat no fish or seafood.....they do however, eat lots of fats primarily from goat's meat and and goat's milk and cheese for which they are famous........C8 and ketones?
