In this episode we welcome Dr. Greg Shearer, who is a professor of nutritional sciences at the Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on how the downstream products of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, sometimes called lipid mediators, affect disease-related outcomes. The paper discussed in this episode relates specifically to Omega-3s, Niacin and HDL Function. For more information on OmegaMatters, visit: omegaquant.com...

OmegaMatters is a podcast hosted by Drs. Kristina Harris Jackson and Bill Harris, which will help put some of the most important research studies into context. Together and with invited guests, they will focus mainly on omega-3 fatty acids, but from time to time will explore other corners of the fatty acid world as well as other fat soluble nutrients like vitamin D. In many cases, they will interview the primary authors of research studies, so that these guests can guide Drs. Jackson and Harris through the findings. The mission of this series is to help people better understand the nuances of nutrition science, so that they can apply those lessons to their lives.
Who is OmegaQuant?
OmegaQuant is an independent, CLIA-certified lab that offers Omega-3 Index, Prenatal DHA and Mother’s Milk DHA testing to researchers, clinicians and the public.
Dr. Harris is an internationally recognized expert on omega-3 fatty acids and how they can benefit patients with heart disease. He obtained his Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from the University of Minnesota and did post-doctoral fellowships in Clinical Nutrition and Lipid Metabolism with Dr. Bill Connor at the Oregon Health Sciences University.
His interest in omega-3 fatty acids began with his postdoctoral work when he published his first study on the effects of salmon oil on serum lipids in humans (1980). Since that time he has been the recipient of five NIH grants for studies on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) on human health.
He has more than 300 publications relating to fatty acids, including omega-3s, in medical literature and was an author on two American Heart Association scientific statements on fatty acids: “Fish Consumption, Fish Oil, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Disease” (2002), and “Omega-6 Fatty Acids and Risk for Cardiovascular Disease” (2009) both published in the journal Circulation.
Dr. Harris co-invented the Omega-3 Index in 2004 and made it commercially available to the research community and the public in 2009. To date, the Omega-3 Index has been used as the standard measure of omega-3 status in more than 200 clinical studies.
Dr. Harris is also a Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota.
Dr. Harris moved on as OmegaQuant’s President in late 2020 to establish the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI), where he will go back to his roots of conducting research on fatty acids and health.

Interview Dr. Ford Brewer on the topic of HDL, cholesterol and how to improve. He has science knowledge and personal experience and many patients who have made big progress.

I'm curious as to whether Omega 3's from the plant source, algae is more beneficial since it is what fish eat to obtain their Omega3's and is a more original source? Have there been any studies regarding this? Shouldn't we be concerned about fish sources since many fish have been contaminated with heavy metals and plastics?

The general principle is - the higher up on the food chain the more concentrated the pollutants. Also, if one wants to be vegan and have less of an impact on the fisheries, then go algae.

@@peterz53 Algea lipids are better than none. Funny how the vegans have to supplement - B12 for example.

It takes taking 500 mg of Niacin 4 times per day to raise the HDL and lower LDL. That is my personal experience as well as what I read. The flush is tolerable, but not enjoyable. The facts show up in the lab tests. Eventually I quit doing it and the HDL and lDL began going back. Currently am back to working toward doing 4 times 500 mg again. I do take either fish oils and / or Krill oil and other supplements on a regular basis. Very curious if you have looked into (200 mg) New Zealand Green lipped clam supplements. They are supposed to be effective on reducing aches and pains and also reducing bad blood pressure, etc. I would like to see research and evidence regarding this and relative facts.

I took 6,000 Omega 3 Krill oil and my percentage has increased from 4% to 10 % so I am very well satisfied.

I would like to hear where phospholipids in Krill oil are important. Possibly equal or more than omega 3 oils.?? And how New Zealand Green lipped mussels (200mg) affect the body and/or plaque.? They are shown to relieve pain and certain other issues in people. I would really like to see research and comparative studies that explain the benefits of each of these. These are very important questions and answers we need to understand to find out which items are more important as nutrients. Thanks.

Also, what is the content and type of polyphenols and peptides (?) are in these substances.. and how do they compare to polyphenols, etc. in high quality extra virgin olive oil.?? Who has the answers to these questions so that we can learn the facts and the differences in how they affect our arteries, brain, heart, etc.?? Thanks.

Have you explored C15 an odd chain saturated fatty acid. Supposed to be better than omega 3

Very interesting. My index is about 8% and I do supplement with modest amount of algae based EPA/DHA, eat a little fish etc. But....but recently started a small dose (50 mg) of niacinamide in part to support the NAD+ salvage pathway. Will have to look at Dr. Shearer's paper and see what doses were used and which form of B3 was used.

I’m curious why you chose algal oil if you’re not vegan. I have a 10.7% index and don’t supplement, but if I did I’d go with krill oil.

@@kinpatu Understand. I am trying to be as vegan as possible and eat only a small amount of wild sardines, which if my blood metrics stay good, will probably go away also. Added ground flax seed to my soy/berry yogurt and eating a few more nuts and will be testing my Index again soon.

The last name "Borja", is pronounced "Borha", or as in the "ch" in the Scottish "loch". It's Spanish. Now if the scientist wants his name pronounced differently because he identifies himself as Catalan, that's different, and wrong imo, because the name is Spanish.
