My A1C was 6.0 and my doctor said I had to take metformin. I inquired about the side effects. He replied, "Well, they all have side effects." (He didn't know.). I asked if I could wait three months. He said, "No, you are losing your pancreas cells and you don't get them back." My cousin who works for another doctor said they do not prescribe medicine for an A1C of 6.0 but recommend diet and exercise first so I chose not to take the metformin. Instead, I cut out all cakes, pies, cookies, candy, etc and lifted weights, did cardio, and hiked frequently. I returned in three months weighing twenty pounds less and my A1C had dropped to 5.6. The doctor was surprised yet took offense that I did not take the metformin, "a highly effective drug." I told him I wasn't questioning the effectiveness of the drug but whether every doctor prescribes metformin with an A1C of 6.0." In the end, he asked if he could go hiking with me. But I chose to drop him as my personal care doctor.

Applesauce, sweet potato, rice, oatmeal are very high in carbs and raise glucose levels extremely fast. Diabetics need to omit them from their diet. I'm surprised you didn't mention intermittent fasting, OMAD and the benefits of going long periods without spiking insulin. Long time T2 diabetic taking supplements, no meds. Low carb diet with OMAD.
@jjl6752

Sweet potatoes, rice, oatmeal never cause diabetes, other very high GI food do especially soft drnks, juices, candies, cakes etc that are full of concentrated simple form of sugar which you consume before the onset of the actual diabetes even when one is young. That's why lots of slim people also have it in Japan, surprisingly.

Due to stress from a narcissist, I developed inflammation behind my eyes in 2019, ran to a&e and they referred me to a eye doc, since THEN, I developed cataract, glaucoma, eye pressure and uveitis through a wrong size tube implanted in my eye, spikes in my blood sugar which caused me to be pre diabetic, nothing but all meds induced. These chemicaxx also caused my immune system to stall soo healing was drastically slow, I was fully open to getting infections, viruses and bacteria, I had cut my hand and it took months to heal. I developed bruises on my leg, I only went in for cloudy eye with no previous medications xx or operations, but since I was referrxx, I’ve had three operations and my eyes still haven’t healed ( how can they, my immune system was made to slow right down), my eye stitches came lose three times and now they want to do another surgery to cut the tube implant that caused me to have uveitix. All these chemicaxx are the reason we get and stay ill. Just to add, these steroix eye drops instigated all the other illnessex I have and prolonged use of them have taken layers off the white boot of my eye. They also cause bone losx.

Great info, Dr. Axe! Jumping on here to say that I was surprised to have a slightly elevated A1C at 5.7 (the lowest number for pre-diabetes) at 5’6” and 113lbs. While weight was not a factor for me (and I don’t do a ton of sugar, either!) I attributed it to long years of unmanaged stress, severe hormone imbalance (free testosterone under 3ngl), poor sleep, and more importantly, lack of exercise. I am getting on the path to bringing better rhythms into my life, and found this video to be helpful. Any pre-diabetic diet advice for people who are on the brink of underweight?

My A1c came back at 6.1, and I started intermittent fasting immediately as I knew I am in the pre diabetic range. I started having early dinner by 6 p.m and not eat anything till 7 a.m next day. My breakfast consists of just three boiled eggs and a cup of green tea. However, around 10 a.m I would start feeling light headed, shortness of breath and tingling on my hands and feet. This would get worse which would force me to have my lunch, which consists mainly of rice and veggies. After lunch the symptoms would subside and i would be back to normal. Why is this happening? Is it hypoglycemia? Are three eggs at breakfast not enough to sustain me for a later lunch? And since this is the case im afraid to go for longer fasts even if i want to.

Perhaps try using a CGM to see how each food affects your blood sugar.

@@melaniemangin3015 I follow carbs intake carefully, I don’t have problem with sugar during the day I stay mostly below 100, but my fasting reading first thing in am is most of the time 125, why is that, what’s going on internally around 3am when I wake up thirsty and drink 12 oz if water? How to control this night mare reaction?

I have a tendency for Gestational diabetes. I'm on my 3rd pregnancy. How accurate and nutritional is the glucose sugar drink test? Does low iron or other conditions affect the outcome of this test? What are my alternative opinions for managing Gestational Diabetes?

I had gestational diabetes. I kept it under control through diet alone and my baby was born healthy at 8lbs 10oz. I'm now perimenopausal, and I tell you, it's hell. My A1C is at 6.0. This is my most recent bloodwork result. It is shocking but not surprising. I started a high protein low carb diet and exercising. I'm going to try to lose 20 pounds. I'm going to try to reverse it. So my advice, start your healthy journey early. Goodluck!
