Straight from Q-branch into the hands of the Pierce Brosnan era James Bond. First appearing in quartz form in 1995 in Goldeneye and making further appearances in Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and Die Another Die. Equipped with everything from a laser to a remote detonator, this watch defines an era. Join me for an in-depth review of the Omega Seamaster 2531.80 Bond watch with the automatic 1120 movement. A piece of James Bond history and the watch that started my passionate pursuit of watch collecting.
From Sean Connery to Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan to Daniel Craig and from Goldfinger to Goldeneye and everything in between James Bond has always had a few gadgets. In the real world, how special is Bond’s watch without all of the q-branch additions? Would 007 approve?

I hear you sir. I am 62 and my first Seamaster will be here tomorrow. My Bond was Sean Connery. He was attacking a bad guy camp on the beach and he looked at his Rolex. I was hooked. As bonds progressed I went to Omega with Bond. Only now am I able to spend the 4k plus for a Seamaster 300m Professional in blue. (from an AD) I love it already. Finally I am James Bond. :)

Thank you for this brilliant video. I found myself in your video too. This was my first watch as a present from my dad more than 12 years ago when I was so in love in the Bond movies. After that my passion of watches has been growing dramatically. Even though I ended up Submariner, AP Royal Oak, Omega Speed Moon, JLC reverso, Breitling Navitimer, ... but I will never sell this watch. This one is part of my childhood.

There’s a very good reason why the bezel it’s stiff to rotate. When you want set your remaining dive/ decompression times, you do not want it to inadvertently move from your setting. Great vid!

Loved, loved, loved this video, all of it. Especially liked the look at the movement and your comments about it. I can't take off caseback, no tools and too scared. Also, your hands are very steady and mine aren't, especially as I get older, the tremors increase. Look, this was just a top video in every way. Knowledgeable, informative, well shot and good, clear sound, with the personal story of you and Bond and Dearborn and museums to complete the package. If we had stars it'd be so close to 5 that it wouldn't be funny. Keep it up. I'm hooked.

When push came to shove, after a year of deliberation (and saving), I purchased a speedmaster pro for myself. But, my father had one of these for about 15 years, and actually passed it down to me a couple of weeks ago. I've always liked these, but I have to say, after having it on wrist for a few days - I love it! One good thing about the scalloped bezel edge - it may be difficult to turn, but slides under a shirt cuff like a dream! Thanks for the review; great stuff!

Loved your video and the depth of technical data you covered about the awesome caliber 1120 motor. I to have had Rolex Subs, GMT's, Brietlings and feel just fine letting someone else be the Stewart of them. Special note is I now have one very similar to your Seamaster due in from Texas next week Lord willing. It will be a keeper just like yours. Also, I really liked the part about you and your father having a good time together.

Beautiful dial on this watch. I wish more watches had dials like this where it still keeps a very nice and classy look but has a great added feature to it that separates it from the basic flat dials that so many watches have. I personally have always been more of a Speedmaster fan, but I really enjoy this Seamaster. Great review and thanks for sharing another great watch.

Hi J! I think this might be your best produced video yet. I love the bold, sans serif font on the massive orange color block. Sound is crisp yet nicely rounded with just the right amount of dampening. Moving closer to the camera with natural frontal lighting has really increased engagement as well. I think I see a subtle yet profound strategy of increased visual legibility that matches a rising level of intimacy and contact with viewers. I think these are the incremental yet evident changes that really matter and will take your channel to the place you want it to be. Well done J! The watch that started my collecting was one I bought in 1989. It is an early 1960s Tudor Oyster Prince Date with the applied big tudor rose logo at 12 o'clock. The case markings and signed crown are all Rolex. At the time, I had no idea that it was significant or collectible whatsoever. I bought it simply because I had an immediate, visceral response to it despite the exorbitant (at the time for me) price of three hundred Canadian dollars. After all these years, it's still my favourite watch and I will never part with it. It is about the only object for which I have a real emotional bond. I wore it on my wedding day and my wife now wears it and it will be passed on to one of my sons or my daughter. I think all people have an impulse to leave some sort of legacy or heirloom. A watch is a modest way of remaining remembered. You, my friend, have a bond with your Bond watch! I know, cheesy.
@JANTHONYCHANNEL
@JANTHONYCHANNEL 7 лет назад
Wow, thank you Neil. Your feedback has been crucial in helping me grow. I'm really glad you like the changes I continue to make. Indeed, I totally get what you mean regarding the emotional bond and passing something down that has a story and love behind it. I hope my 1899 Elgin pocket watch survives long after I am gone and people that hold it feel the generations of souls whose hands it has passed through before them.

For those interested to know, the He escape valve is to allow OUT the helium which get past the seals in a diving bell/recompression chamber. So when ascending releasing the valve will protect it from pressure change (10m depths is double atmospheric pressure) - so ascending to another dive stop you would potentially blow out the glass. I love my 300M, had it since 2007.

This watch launched my love for watches as well. My first diver that I purchased was the Goldeneye quartz version of this. Yeah, I know, quartz movement, but it was what I could afford at the time and I absolutely love the look of the watch, plus of course it is Bond's. Plus I actually like the red tip on the second dial in the quartz version.

My best friend bought a new E36 M3 in 1994 so BMW invited us to a special premier of Goldeneye, which featured the Z3 as it was first being rolled out to dealers. I wasn't into watches back then, so the Seamaster didn't make any impression on me whatsoever. But the cars sure did and given the twenty seconds or so of screen time the Z3 got, I remember thinking that BMW paid a lot of money for very questionable return. Anyway, I agree with the comments from others: this is your best review to date. You told us the basics but you showed your likes and dislikes and more importantly, told the story of why the watch is important to you. Great job!

If my 2531.80 bezel is wet with fresh water, I can't move the bezel. When I put my watch in the ocean, I have no trouble turning the bezel. That said, I agree it is better aesthetically than it is functionally. At first, I disliked the skeleton hands. After having mine for thirty years, I have come to love them. No matter how they are overlapped, the time is always visible. Nice, thorough review. Thank you for opening your watch. I have never seen the movement in my SMP.

There have only been two watches I technically bought twice. The Steinhart batman GMT and the 90s Seamaster. I had the 39mm Steiny and sold it, but ended up getting the larger titanium one later. As for the Omega, I had the midsize quartz, but sold it to afford a Speedy Reduced. It didn't take long before I was lusting for the SMP so I traded that for this reference. The bracelet is the best of anything I've ever tried, and it sits so nicely on the wrist

Who knows, f not for Pierce Brosnan, Omega might be defunct! I saw his picture in a magazine wearing the 2541.80 on a dive trip to Bonaire and fell in love. It was another decade before I was able to buy one. It was the last new one I could find in the U S. Surprisingly, I was given a nice discount because it had been discontinued. I think it must have been sitting in the case for a long time. A few weeks after I purchased it, it started losing a minute every hour. Back,to Omega for warranty service and it came back to me running perfectly. This is the one watch I don’t think I could part with, unless someone offered me ten times what it’s worth. Yes, I have dived with it, probably around fifty times. I know I took it to 120 feet in Grand Cayman.❤️

Hey J. Anthony. I believe it was introduced in 1993: "Seamaster Professional Diver (automatic and quartz movements; also sometimes known as the 300M; available in a full size mens, mid size mens, and ladies models). The mens models come in two different dial/hands styles: the classic "skeleton hand" introduced in 1993 and the bolder "GMT style" introduced in 1998." - chronocentric p.s. this wasn't the only source I looked at.

The very early 2531.80 had an eta 2892 movement that was pretty much un-enhanced by Omega. On these early models the first digit of the eight digit serial number was 4. On the subsequent units with a serial number starting with a 6 or an 8 had the 1120 movement like the one in this video.

It’s also my first watch in my collection. I also have Rolex Submariner and Omega Ocean Planet 2014 Olympic in my collection. The only regret I have is that I’ve chosen quartz movement. Omega boutique store told me that Omega no longer makes quartz watch. My wife has two omegas quartz watches. Lady’s Seamaster and a Constellation, the omega boutique store clerk calls it the “Cindy Crawford Watch”. Not sure if these quartz omega is unique or just junk now. I still like them if collectors trashes them now.

Danial Craig also wore the SMP in Casino Royal during the casino scenes. He did wear a Planet Ocean for most of the movie though.

Terry Steiner Yes. But he didn't wear this model. Instead he wore the Co-Axial variant with the applied hour markers, applied logo and longer hands. Model ref no. 2220.80. I have that one. You can see it in my videos..

Only thing about the divers extension is that it is so big damn. The modern rolex glide lock is amazing, at the time the rolex was definitely an underdog

The rotation of the bezel can be adjusted by the spring beneath the bezel.

Well done. The production values were a real step up. Made the whole thing more...watchable. (Sorry.) Great anecdote at the end, too. Great job. Really.

I take no credit (except maybe for "snap fingers to jump cut", lol). Any small suggestions I've made are for things I'm confident you would have realized sooner or later anyway. "Talent will out", as we say, and you've got it. All the best in your future successes - and I know you're going to have many.

I just purchased a Omega 168.1622 that looks exactly the same for $150 bucks on let go. Authentic with all paperwork. It’s a little too small for my liking but I couldn’t pass it up for the price

Is that authentic? Probably a replica with replica papers for that low price. You should get it authenticated by an AD.

I have the smaller body version (acquired from an authorized Omega dealer) and notice the tip of the second hand is red vs your version with the white tipping on the end of the second hand. Is that a variance of the difference in the case size or an iterative result of model year tweaks?

Great review, nice personal touch. A question; with so many auto watches how do you maintain them? Is it best to keep them running to ensure lubrication or do newer synthetic oils do the job even if they are left unused for a period? Is it a choice between run to maintain accuracy etc, or less use less wear? Cheers.

With luxury watches: Get them, serviced every 5-6 years. With cheaper watches... get them serviced when they dont run any longer and you still want to keep it.

Great video and think this way of doing a watch review is the way forward. The only thing that bugs me about this watch is you see it everywhere but if you say about buying a Rolex sub the negative thing everyone will point out is there too common you see them everywhere but never gets mentioned about this which is way more common

Such a beautiful vintage dial. Great vid, the world is not enough was way better than Tomorow never dies, which had some good scenes but overall was not great. 😂

Thank you and I totally agree. The best part about Tomorrow Never Dies for me was the car chase through the parking garage with the BMW 750. I love the E38 generation BMWs because of that movie.
