OMEn Chronicles: The Effects

So the point of this video was to just demonstrate the various steps of some the effects in OMEn. Obviously I didn't get to show all of them (I showed something like 15 out of 106 here), but I wanted to make something that anyone could watch and understand. It's specifically not detailed. I purposely didn't put any text or labels because I didn't want to distract viewers.
My process was to show the final shot, followed by the raw untouched shot (filmed with a RED Epic in 5K), and then the stabilized shot (if necessary), followed by the projection map (painting out a person in 3D space), and then various effects layers and smoke simulation renders and tests. Then I end the shot with the final effects, with a wipe to the final color graded shot.
All of the compositing was done in Adobe After Effects, with editing done in Premiere Pro. The smoke was simulated with a plugin for 3DsMax called FumeFX (love this plugin). The sparks were done using an After Effects plugin called Particular. I tracked the various shots using either After Effect's built in camera tracker, or Boujou. You can also use the freely available Autodesk MatchMover, which is pretty sweet.
Projection maps! So the shots where you see a person get painted out, is called projection mapping. Basically I am projecting a "clean plate" onto various surfaces/geometry in 3D space. It's a more advanced version of tracking a 2D clean plate. Because the camera is in motion, there's parallax in the image, so 2D tracking a clean plate simply doesn't work. Different parts of the image move at different speeds. Projection mapping allows you to basically rebuild the space as it actually exists (more or less) in real life, so you get realistic motion of the clean plate.
Stabilizing! This was all done using After Effects' built in Warp Stabilizer function. Everything was shot at 5K resolution, so I had lots of room to be able to crop in without losing detail. Keep your shutter speed/angle high enough so that you don't get motion blur in the shots, and stabilizing will make the shots super steady. Just be careful not to get warping (very easy to do). If that happens, stabilize the shot less. Even just 1-2% can make a lot of difference.
Smoke! So everything was simulated using FumeFX, which is a plugin for 3DsMax, a 3D modeling and rendering a program. I would basically import the tracking and camera data from the shots into the program and then model some geometry so that it represents the scene. I would then iterate a LOT with the smoke simulations until I got motion that I liked. Then I'd simulate at a low spacing (basically high quality) with the function "Wavelet turbulence" turned on, which basically lets me run a higher resolution simulation on top of the current sim (to get technical it just subdivides the voxels).

Most people still don't fully understand the complexity or the amount of time and work that goes into making a video like yours. Your VFX breakdown helps to shed light on the subject and put some it into perspective. Nice job.

Sarah Jepson I am very much so NOT opposed to doing a second film, or expanding it into a series. Just want to clarify that haha. The issue is budget. If I do it again I would need at the very least a couple dozen thousand dollars. I've definitely considered the crowd funding route, and think it's doable. There's just a LOT of effort and risk that goes into just the campaign, before ever getting the money, which makes me hesitate.
@tossell1969
@tossell1969 10 лет назад
Ahh I see. Well that goes without saying re getting paid. I just thought you didn't want to cos of other projects/directions. But yeah it took so long...I remember your Tweets, lol...so pennies upfront. Crowd funding has worked for so many inet projects, as I suspect you know. Might be worth getting everybody together and...That would be cool though. I know it's there on paper and the thought of it never being made makes me sad as I know RJ want it so bad. We all do. It can't just end like that cos of all of yous hard work

Ok, so where do I begin...first, awesome job, this is some top notch stuff. Your attention to detail is going to take you places if you want it. Your understanding of pretty advanced techniques is awesome. This VFX breakdown was very informative and inspirational. I'm a Computer Animation student and was planning on specializing in Animation, but you make VFX very tempting. This is better than most of the graduation VFX videos I've seen at my school. Really great! Thanks for putting up such an awesome video Wren.

Wren, these visual effects are truly incredible. They look like a team of people was responsible for them. If I'm not mistaken, it was just you (besides some rotoscoping.) Awesome job!
@SirWrender
@SirWrender 10 лет назад
I did the majority of the work, but I definitely had some help. A guy named Kevin (from the Brandonjla/Freddiew channel) made the awesome explosion about a third through the film. I wanted to break down that shot but I somehow lost a couple assets for it!! And Kial Natale did the sink hole shot and the boulder smash shot. He did a very good job there. And yeah, plennnnnty of rotoscoping help haha. (I also didn't do the custom score and the sound design)

So, let me get this straight. About the projection maps. You have a selection of the video before the person enters, and project that onto an assortemnt of 2D planes in a 3D world. You do this so that all of the pieces will move as if they are in real life ( e.g. the bush is in front of the background and so will move more quickly), and you make the movements of the 3D camera mirror perfectly the movements of the camera irl. Then, you take the rendered animation and overlay it over the scene, thus giving the illusion that noone is standing there. You then fade out the layer of the projection maps so that the person in the original footage fades into existence, and then is overlyaed by smoke and particles and what not. It would be AWESOME if you made a tutorial on the projection mapping, and if you could tell us what program you used for that step, I would be much obliged.
