As far as I can tell, the reason they sometimes don't subtitle her sign language is because they want the viewer to understand how frustrating and isolating it is for her. It's the only way she can communicate and no one else understands her. This is pointed out in a way when shoko and shoya meet again as teens. He slaps himself and says "I finally understand what you were saying to me". That is my take on it anyways
@abc123tiktok
@abc123tiktok Год назад
I would also add from Shoya perspective its easy to judge and say you would be best friends with Shoko. But reality is you have to learn another language to communicate with some on you know nothing about. And in 6th grade that effort for most kids, hell even adults is not easy. Majority of us would not be bullies but be surprised how many of us would not make effort because too much work.

@@abc123tiktokAgreed. Plus she's a constant reminder of his old self. Guilt was what insinuated his prior actions but later on, I believe it transformed to love silently, although he's had a crush on her for the longest time, he never allowed himself to approach her from that angle for his actions, even just a 'Friend' was a very tall order from his eyes to someone he treated so bad

btw the reason nishimiya suddenly said i love you to ishida was because of the cat pouch that ishida gave her. At the meow meow club ueno actually gave him that pouch and she put a note inside that said something like she always had feelings for him. But ishida ended up giving it to nishimiya 😆 its shown in the manga but was cut from the movie

Such a great movie! The teacher is the most despicable to me. Mean to his students in general, doesn't accommodate the special needs child, being indifferent to bullying, and then making a show of being upset when the higher powers got involved.

Also a little detail that's also mostly lost to others, when the teacher shamed Naoka in the class, saying she reads slow but gave Shoko a pass, Naoka whispered out her frustration. Shoya noticed that and that's why he mimicked Shoko's unintelligible reading not to mock her (although that could also be true) but mostly to make Naoka feel a little less bad about how she was treated by the teacher.

Psychologist here. Each of the characters has their own reasons for behaving the way they do, and the exceptional thing of Koe no Katachi is how each character is flawed and plays a role in the tragedy (this is especially true for the manga, because the anime leaves out a lot of things due to time limitations). It's such an amazing series in terms of psychological depth. The teacher played an important role, perhaps even the most significant, because unlike the others, he was an adult during the bullying, and should have done something to step in. The teacher (his name is Takeuchi) saw Shoko Nishimiya as burdensome because she took more energy to deal with due to her disability. He therefore made Ueno take on more responsibility, which put her in a difficult position being a child herself (and gradually made her dislike Nishimiya). The teacher was aware that Nishimiya was being bullied, but he didn't care. Only when the principal became aware of the situation, he blamed Shoya for everything, which led to the whole situation to escalate even further. He also knew that Shoya was being bullied, but he didn't care, and didn't try to help Shoya when he came to his teacher for help. Shoya wasn't empathic as a child, which was his biggest flaw. He saw how Ueno and others were bothered by Shoko Nishimiya's disability, and responded to their frustrations by bullying her. In a subtle way, he was encouraged by the other children (especially Kawaii, who seems to be fine with anything as long as people like her). They of course turned against him when we was blamed by the teacher. He did do most of the bullying, so it was justified, but he was doing it in a context in which other classmates were also playing a role. Ueno had a crush on Ishida, and saw how his life was ruined afterwards. In her mind, before Nishimiya came to their class, everything was fine, so she blamed Nishimiya for everything that happened to Ishida. That's why she continued to hate Nishimiya; simply because she loved Ishida. She also felt that the "pleasing" and "kind" character of Nishimiya was a mask; that it was a kind of fake personality. There is some truth to this; Nishimiya was suppressing her anger, which only came out when she fought with Ishida as a child. This was probably one of the most authentic moments for Nishimiya, when she let her real feelings out. (I also felt that Nishimiya somehow looked a bit "happy" as she was fighting back to Ishida. It felt like she was finally being her real self.) Ueno hated how Nishimiya was never showing her true feelings. But of course, it's impossible for Nishimiya (who was always being rejected) to show her real self, because she was desperately trying to make friends. And (like all people who go through abuse or trauma), she blamed herself and concluded that she was being bullied because she was a bad or unlovable person. Nishimiya's mother (and sister) also went through a lot, because Nishimiya had been bullied several times, and her father left the family because Nishimiya was deaf. The mother has the belief that you need to be strong to go through life, and was insistent that Nishimiya should go to a regular school instead of a school for children with disabilities. This was not a good decision, because it only led to Nishimiya being bullied, because these schools were not prepared to give her the guidance she needed (that's why things went so wrong; neither the teacher nor the children in the class were able to give Nishimiya the support she needed). It would have been better if the mother just accepted Nishimiya's disability and put her in a school that could actually give her proper guidance. The important thing is to understand that all the characters responded to each other; that the tragedy is based in context and interaction rather than just individuals who are bad. (Honestly, I don't know what Shimada's issue is. He seemed to turn on Ishida without any really good reason. Perhaps he was jealous of Ishida?)

I'll say that shimada is bitter when shoya snitch. shimada put on a mask like I'm a semi-good person or something like that to other people. my first impression shimada is like the good guy in their group, turns out he's worst.

In my eyes, Shimada is like a young boy who liked to act cool and thought he belong with the cool kids. Because Ishida's antics led the group, Shimada just went with Ishida's behavior and laughed with them thinking what they are doing is cool no matter how inconsequential they are. And ever since Ishida was outed as the bully, the group disowned him and bullied him because they think they were the good guys now. They think they were the cool kids now who doesn't tolerate bullies by bullying them back. Personally, as a victim of bullying back then, I hate jerks like Ueno but at least she owns up to it. That doesn't make her better but at least you know you can just ignore her. Snakes like Kawai and Shimada are the worse ones. People like them who will turn their back on you the moment the situation starts to feel disadvantageous to them. They will try to gaslight others to be against you and they will play victim like they are the purest of angels. Everyone else is understandable for the most part. I hate all 3 of them that I want to slap all 3 of them across the room.

@1:04:10 "Why would she think that", sadly, if you're bullied as much as you are like Nishimiya, you grow into a person with extreme self-confidence issues. It's why she always apologizes even when things aren't her fault, why she often shies away and looks down, why she feels unworthy of people's kindness. It's also why Ishida has developed those same feelings, because he got bullied after as well. Unfortunately I speak from experience and even though I'm 33 now I still battle with myself every day to tell myself that it's okay to want just basic human things like connection and love, that I am worthy of those things.

My girlfriend who teaches 5th grade was very pissed off at how their teacher handled the situation. He knew exactly what was going on and who was responsible yet did nothing other than the occasional verbal warning. It is only when things got way out of hand and the principle and parents got involved that he took it seriously. If he nipped this behavior in the but early it wouldn't of escalated so badly. The teacher also knew everyone was misbehaving yet chose to make Shoya the scapegoat

I think you don't get the subtitles for the sign language because it's supposed to hammer home how isolating having to communicate in a way that most people don't understand must be. It'd be nice if we could have subtitles for sign language in real life, too (honestly, with how technology is, maybe they'll develop augmented reality where you can have your phone interpret it at some point) - but I'm pretty certain the audience is left out deliberately.

The blonde girl is the real villain here. If you remember when they play piano and sing, she is giving a sign to start singing on purpose so that Nishimiya would mistakenly start singing. You will find more evident of that when you rewatch it.

To me she seemed like she considered herself as a good person who was morally right, but did nothing to stop the bullying. When she was called out for it she played the role of a victim, a bystander and put the blame on the others. I wouldn’t call her a villain, there are people who just won’t admit they were wrong and move on, I like to think this story accounts for different types of people and how they deal with their own mistakes
@BenganGamer

Her being in 6th grade makes it easy atleast for me to forgive her because kids are stupid and ignorant and people will always be hurt because of that. The real piece of shit imo was the teacher who as far as we saw did absolutely nothing except point out Ishida when another adult came and asked.
@bertrandkane9678
@bertrandkane9678 Год назад
To me it just looked like her preparing to start singing rather than actively trying to trick Nishimiya but she was definitely complicit in the bullying. Either way I'd say the teacher was much more of a villain considering he, as a grown ass adult, was fully aware of the bullying and didn't intervene until Nishimiya's mother got involved. If I recall correctly he basically said something to the effect of "Bullying builds character." in order to justify himself in the manga.

Since you asked for our theories about what happens next, I'll tell you how the manga ended, since it went further. Basically after they graduate high school, they start to all pick out colleges. Shoya is a bit unsure of what he wants to do, but thinks he'll probably take over the barber shop from his mom, and decides to stay and study for that. Naoka and Sahara get accepted into a prestigious fashion design college in Tokyo. Shoya is of course happy for them. Shoko reveals that she's interested in being a hair stylist, and that she's also going to study in Tokyo because there's a teacher there that's deaf, who's shown interest in Shoko as a student. Shoya tells her that she can't go and it's too dangerous in Tokyo. Later he realizes that he's being selfish and tells her to do what she wants. Also throughout the manga, we see Tomohiro and the rest working on an amateur film. It ends up getting scrapped after the argument at the bridge, but they overhaul the script and finish it while Shoya is in a coma. They have a first showing at the festival. The short film is basically about a guy who tried to kill his best friend, because he secretly hated him, and is about to hang, but a fairy stops him and gives him a second chance. It's later featured at a film festival, but get's brutally slammed by the critics. After the initial shock and frustration though, Tomohiro decides to keep making movies, with almost all of them featuring Mashiba as the lead. Oh and also Yuzuru wins the photo competition, and pursues photography (she's of course not college-age yet) We then have a time skip and all the characters are meeting again at a sort-of school reunion thing after a long time being away from each other. We can see that now Shoko and Naoka are getting along pretty well. In fact it seems that the two of them along with Sahara have been hanging out a lot together during their time in college. Everybody is catching up on what happened, and it's pretty heart-warming, and frankly really needed after all the pain before. The final scene is of Shoko and Shoya standing at the door for the room with the name of their middle school. Shoya is finally ready to talk to his old friends. They both hesitate at the door. Shoko says she's nervous, and Shoya admits that he is as well. He then holds out his hand, and she takes it. And then they open the door and enter. Whether or not Shoya and Shoko end up getting together is never confirmed, but it's implied imo. If you enjoyed reading about the extra scenes, than I'd highly recommend you pick up the manga. It's got a lot more stuff that had to be cut out of the movie, and it's my all time favorite manga series.

While it was certainly karmic retribution that as the instigator Shoya got to suffer the same fate Shoko did, it's equally BS that he got scapegoated the way he did as nearly everyone in that class was equally as guilty as he was in bullying Shoko. And I really hate the teacher on top of it all, as he was more annoyed by Shoya's behavior than concerned about what he was actually doing to Shoko... and then when the school was finally held responsible for her bullying, the teacher set it up for Shoya to take the fall when it was the entire class and a teacher that didn't give a crap.

Wonderful reaction per usual. Two bits of information on your question “Why don’t they provide subtitles for what she is saying?” from both an editing point of view and food -for-thought (which this will be a more of an interesting read I’m sure). In terms of storytelling, the fact that she is saying something and we don’t know what it is, as you’ve encountered through your reactions, gives a sense of suspense. Usually they clear it up by having someone reiterate what she signed, but it sometimes needs to be found out later on to provide that hook we all enjoy in drama and suspense. ******** Now the more interesting thing to take away from it in my opinion, is this: If it was frustrating for you not to know what she was saying, imagine her life (and all people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing) how difficult and frustrating it is to feel that way about almost everyone you meet. That is their life. I believe that is the moral to take away from this is it’s understandable to be frustrating not getting part of the story (unless you know Japanese Sign Language which is mostly different than American Sign Language) and then reflecting on how it must feel for others who live with that challenge in life. Just a thought! As always keep up the awesome reactions man!

One beat the film didn't convey from the manga was that it was only Kawaii's classmates that made the cranes but she tries to take credit for them. Near the start she also gave Shoko a false que by miming early in the choral scene. These little touches show how toxic her character was, and one of the few that didn't learn anything towards being a better person. ...Pancreas, are you mad? Give the guy a break! (No, actually it's a great film, he'd just need a few feel-good films in-between I think.)

When comparing the movie to the anime, there are a lot of good points, and a few bad ones. I think it was good they cut out the film-making arc. It was a bit redundant even in the manga IMO. And the ending of the movie was great. Emotionally it was much better than in the manga, but the manga of course is a bit less emotional and more sober. It shows Ishida coming to grips with reality. The Animation is of course amazing. Much better than in the manga, though one could argue the manga, because its still so unrefined, shows that people arent all super pretty looking. The movie was really good in squeezing your heart, but it wasnt so good in showing us the internal monologues and even the dialogues. The 2 main things I didnt like in the movie was… In the dreaded balcony scene, there was a logical break in Ishida in the movie, not so in the manga. And after he wakes up, when they meet on the bridge, in the movie she starts laughing. Thats typical anime move, create a misunderstanding, one person starts laughing, then everybody starts laughing. But I dont like it. Its as if the underlying problems arent a problem anymore. Its a general criticism I have towards manga/anime creators. In the manga, after his amazing proposal (thats what it sounded to me), after Nishimiya accepts that, they are found by others. Its much better than the typical laughing trope.

You hated the wrong person… you hated Ueno, but you should have hated Kawaii, because there is 2 persons who started everything the demon girl who wanted to be seen as an angel Kawaii and the one who should be there for his students, the teacher, if the teacher helped his students, then Ueno would not hate Nishimiya, she would have seen her as a rival, because she loves Ishida too, but she wouldn’t have hated Nishimiya so much and if Kawaii wouldn’t have lured Nishimiya into error when they where singing, then Nishimiya wouldn’t have been bullied and Ueno hates Nishimiya because she didn’t stand up for herself, that’s why when Nishimiya said that she hated herself for Ueno it meaned that Nishimiya wasn’t standing for herself again, it’s sad, but Ueno always stays true to herself, but she’s brutaly honest and everything she does, doesn’t come out good and so she is seen as the demon, but she was the only one who was good to Nishimiya at the start, she took it to herself and then started to hate Nishimiya and then she was horrible, things took that path infortunatly

He saw his classmates having to accommodate a disabled child and the teacher not helping them, (I think in the manga the teacher was genuinely annoying and at times outright horrible ) how Shoko just took up time and effort without giving anything back (because they didn’t actually understand her) so he just decided to annoy her, then harm her then he didn’t stop because everybody was feeling the same as him and they are kids who don’t know any better. And when Shoko transferred, the other kids decided to respond to the social injustice the same way Shoya did… they ostracized him and harassed him including repeatedly telling him to end his life (and again the teachers did nothing to stop the bullying and sometimes seemed to encourage it). it's a clear demonstration of how good people can start to do bad things because they think they are justified. And how easy that could escalate into horrible acts of cruelty if the environment and the people who should know better did nothing to stop the escalation. There are a lot of subtle things that I loved about this movie…like how it never translates Shoko’s sign language to show how easy it is to misunderstand her or ignore her. Or how Ueno seems to be a person who is hardworking and responsible (she has a part time job, in the beginning she offered to help Shoko with school work, and I believe there’s a shot of her family where she appears to be the eldest and only daughter in her family) but she too started to feel some resentment towards Shoko who seemed to get unfair help from everyone at the school and kept asking her for help without showing gratitude. Also, the way this movie portrayed sever debilitating social anxiety was so real and painful.

好き & 月 both of em sounds pretty similar on pronunciation, Su - Ki and Tsu - Ki. Usually translators are doing their job according to script & text available from *dialogue* it self. so we personally have to think what is the best answer or possible answers to the dialogue occurred. Like 40:23 I think Shoko said "I feel the same too (glad to meet you again).. oh By the way..." And so.

It's kind of funny that I watched this in English dub with my wife and daughter (fantastic dub, BTW) the whole "love" and "moon" thing completely flew over their heads... until I explained that in Japanese "love" (suki) and "moon" (tsuki) sound almost identical... and if someone with a hearing impairment were trying to say it it would probably be indistinguishable.

I actual love that they didn't get together in romantic relationship at end. The story wasn't about falling in love but bullying and its rippling effects on life an its struggles. Its something that can affect everyone around you and leave lasting impact. Shoya is a person that wants to do the right thing but he doesn't know how and if that will ever be enough to fix his mistakes. Or if he deserves to be happy or have forgiveness. Its a beautiful story that he is finally can forgive himself and face the world he closed himself off from.

The movie left a lot out from the light novel. There was a play at the end they were getting ready for near the end. Explanation of how the new guy was bullied and he hates bullies. I think he actually hits Shoya when he finds out. You learn the 2 boys he hung out with early on were getting tired of hanging with him because they were growing up and he wasn't. He talks one of them out of going to summer school. They hung out because it was exciting. Was just too much to fit in a movie.

Fantastic movie and Kyoto Animation destroyed me again but I strongly urge you to read the manga too. This is not the typical manga is better than the anime argument but the film had to cut a lot of subtle detail in order to fit the story into its runtime. Yoshitoki Ooima the mangaka of this book also made Fumetsu no Anata e (To Your Eternity). A haunting beautiful tail about finding the meaning of life. I recommend that one too.

This is legit my favorite movie. Don't know whether you read manga at all, but this one is now available in a very nice 2-volume hardcover. They cut a TON out of the movie (probably so it wouldn't be another hour long), but managed to still make a really incredible film with it. Anywho, if you get a chance to read it, I highly recommend it. There's a chapter from Shouko's perspective and a lot more in there and it's a whole masterpiece.

We can read captions what Nishimiya wanted to say, but Ishida and most of Japanese can not listen her words exactly. So, it is very natural that Ishida could not recognize her words, and we have to accept this. For example, there was a caption “I love you.” as Nishimiya’s words, but if I was a producing staff of this movie, I would to take other words for this scenery, “A ruv ya.” Nishimiya want to say “Suki” as “I love you”, but she said “Chuki”, so Ishida recognized “Tsuki” as “The moon” that he imagined what she wanted to say. And Ueno love him for long time from childhood simply and simply. And you can know other facts with watching these videos, thanks. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mYu752yQBec.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gbuv5LywwTI.html ru-vid.comzDZVZnnFJPE

The sign Shoko made at the bridge was 'Promise', in response to Shoya's request to help him live. She basically promised to never try to end herself again, which was the main reason Shoya asked her in the first place, now no matter what difficulties she may face in future two things are granted, she will not resolve to ending her life, and she will not be alone anymore.

I think the subtitles are missing purposefully, to show the viewers how hard to understand Nishimiya because of her disability sometimes (we got the subtitles on many of her lines, which didn't happened to the characters themselves - for example, when Nishimiya said, she loves Ishida, some people were upset because of Ishida didn't get it, but Nishimiya really had a hard time to speak understandably, and we probably also wouldn't understand it, if we were there), OR/AND to show how hard for Nishimiya to get along with others who can speak and hear. It was an invisible wall, that the characters could feel between them, so as we, viewers, by not always knowing what she tried to say. It is a bit confusing, it is a bit annoying, but we can feel ourselves, how did it feel to them as well. At least this is my interpretation, I think this is the reason, why we didn't get subtitles on many of her signs.
@regerde2711
@regerde2711 Год назад
I think you never get subtitles for the sign language. Ishida and Sahara always say what they are signing out loud but Nishimiya doesn't for the most part. You don't miss anything more than the Japanese audience would miss.

I remember in an interview with the author, she said that in her original draft she intended for Ishida to jump off the balcony, but her editor or publisher rejected it. So she made Nishimiya jump but then have Ishida save her and in turn him falling after all. And with that we got an amazing heart wrenching double-twist. I remember when I watched this movie, I immediately re-watched it and right after that I read the manga, I didnt sleep for the whole time. The entire story hit so hard for me, as I was on both sides of the bullying in the past, though more so on the receiving end. But only many years later, I think maybe only after watching this movie and diving into the topic of bullying, I understood what was wrong with me.
