It's not southern, it's a Gale thing to say.

It's neither southern nor real. The original valley girl accent of the LA area was a real thing that started in the 70s and became well known in the 80s. An established rock musician named Frank Zappa (known for counterculture and experimental music) composed the song Valley Girl (his biggest hit ever), which was a satire of the vapid culture of upper-middle class and wealthy young women in southern california. He got his young daughter to pretend to talk like a valley girl for the track. She admitted she didn't actually know much about how valley girls spoke, so it was just over the top stereotype stuff that she said. Including mixing in some surfer terminology like 'tubular' that had nothing to do with valley girls at the time. So phrases like 'gag me with a spoon' and 'grody to the max' became famous from this song. And the rest of the country thought that that's what 'valspeak' really sounded like. The accent never died and the habit of saying 'like' way too much did spread because of it. You can blame people such as Paris Hilton and the Kardashians who continue passing the torch.

@@notimportant2508 Yes, my dad was a wannabe musician and would watch any music documentary that came on tv in the 90s. I remembered it mostly because Frank Zappa's daughter is named Moon Unit Zappa. Moon Unit... and she said she did the song to spend time with her dad (who I assume was usually on tour). So I thought her dad must suck as much as mine.

I thought it was a older slang.

I promise, I would have stealth communicated to Travis to wind it down if I felt a kind of way about it or thought it was generally problematic. And just to briefly touch on why I didn’t find that to be a moment of appropriation or denigration of AAVE - the butt of the joke is never the slang. It’s always him not knowing how to land the lingo. And that’s funny, and honestly super relatable with all us peeps aging out of youth culture. Again, not to refute your feelings. She wasn't offended, and Travis wasn't trying to offend anyone, so all the people assuming such need to shut their fucking mouths and get their heads out of their fucking asses

​@@d4rkwolf People interpreting and guessing the feelings and inner workings of strangers on the internet who they don't actually know at all is one of my biggest pet peeves about the internet and the CR fandom in particular. They are grown adults who are friends. If something is bothering them they will address it, they don't need people online to be their white knights to bolster their own ego.
