OMG this actually happened! Runners attacked by otters. 

This was funny Kori! Running in the Yukon I’ve had some interesting moments with wildlife. I run with bear spray and it’s the safest I’ve ever felt while running. The bears (and otters!) just want to eat and do their thing, they don’t actively go around looking for people to maul…it’s the other humans we gotta look out for!

There is a YT video of a zoo where they thought it would be cute to house otters and monkeys in the same enclosure. As time went on whenever the monkeys could get one or two otters alone they would hit them mercilessly. One day one of the monkeys got too close to the otters area and they swarmed him, pulled him into the pool and drowned him while biting him. Needless to say they soon separated them.

Squirrels…people feed them & they literally run up to me when I run looking for food. Also skunks. They are always in the park between 5-6 am.

This is insane! I had no idea they were mean. I remember when the bike hit you!!! I have seen a bobcat and a pack of 7 coyotes on a run!!

On my Florida runs, I have encountered black bear, gators galore, packs of wild turkeys (those talons are very intimidating), snakes, bobcat, otter (luckily solo), poisonous toads, and all this in a gated community! 🤣 The eagles, hawks and owls leave you alone but have carried small dogs away.

In Chicago the scariest animals I have seen are raccoons. One time I was running along one of the narrower trails by the lake and there were four big raccoons, two on each side of the trail with one of the two more in the trail then the other on each side. I was like okay, don't act scared because then they will sense your fear, so i just ran through the space they were not occupying and luckily I lived to tell about it lol. But, as Kori mentions at the end--bicyclers---those people---lol not a fan, scare me all the time, but it is much better now than it used to be because they created separate paths for bicyclers and runners and it is mostly followed/adhered to by path users.

They are water weasels, you know. Their closest relatives are the badgers.

The Sea otter you showed isn’t likely to attack a runner unless that runner is actually running on the water! I am quite sure there is a lot more to the story than a “random chance” encounter with river otters. It’s sad people got hurt and it’s also sad people don’t just leave the otters alone. It’s pretty hard to “accidentally step on” an otter!

Funny! I never heard of otter attacks on runners.

Being aware of my surroundings wasn't something I had to be when I started running because I ran only in local park (where at most I could trip on some dog crossing my path) and on a track. When I got bored and started exploring the city I stumbled on a youtuber named Wheels2Walking. He got paralyzed when on a run in the city and fell through a missing grate of a underground parking deck, like 50ft fall. Unexpected holes in the ground deep enough to break a limb or die is the most dangerous IMO. I was running the other day on some grassy area and all of a sudden I see a manhole with missing cover. It wasn't directy on my path, was some 10ft on my left, but it was just totally unexpected. I didn't think any hole will be in this area, let alone that deep and wide. I was thinking, if I wasn't paying attention to the ground and looked away for few seconds while running I could be that dude that got paralized (if I'm lucky) If you explore uncharted territory pay extra attention, guys!

Ain't that funny - today while running, a wasp went into my mouth. Luckily I managed to take it out fast so it just managed to sting me on the inside of my lip. 🐝
