Lanterne Rouge presents highlights of Stage 1 of the Tour de France 2021, a 198 km stage which took riders from Brest to Landerneau but was marred by crashes, some of which were caused by spectators. Stop blaming this woman! The Tour organization makes millions every year and not only with this race and does very little to secure the path of the rider. Some year ago a child was hit by a car from a team ( he died) but nothing was done after that to secure the road. That's easy money for them, and if they read all commentary from this page and the video they must think that they still have a good time in front of them to continue to make money. They do nothing for security and this should be the priority. Why not a formula 1 race in the middle of a crowd. I am sure you will still blame the spectators if there is a crash. Professional cyclists are trying for a long time to change that but nobody is listening.

@@briansimpson5327 Sadly, there is a massive difference between a cyclist getting in your way on a road and a road full of cyclists competing in a competition using roads that are specifically closed off for the race. But with your logic, I'm sure you also hate athletes using roads to take part in long distance running as well. Can you really not see the difference between your problem and a sporting event? What's next, you'll praise someone who walks onto the road in Monaco because the F1 cars are going too fast.

It's almost like the spectators are part of the show and they know it. Me ME Meeee - see my sign - see MEEEE. OMG this must not be allowed. Should be massive fines for anyone creating crashes in the TDF. Basically race fixing by taking out competitors. Just ask the cricket crowd about fixing games. No other sport allows fans to dictate outcomes of any event. Those injured riders and teams spent a lot of time preparing for this event and getting injured on day 1 by some idiot is not acceptable on any level.

They way he fell (top of his head reaching the pole first) he probably would've gotten a concussion, no extreme head injury like with Jakobsen (who crashed face first and without a helmet I believe). Still would've been a terrible concussion, but not life threatening.

I also find the fans in the road very stressful, very hard to watch. I’ve heard that riders are spit on, have urine (or worse) thrown on them, are cursed and pushed and more. I don’t see how that is “sport.” I loved watching racing in 2020.

That's how the beginning of Merckx his career came about. A "supporter" punched him in his liver in the tour of 1975 which caused him to lose that tour and a downfall of career. That "supporter" only had to pay 2 Franks as a symbolic punishment.

What happens to fans like this? Are they fined? Given a jail sentence? It's infuriating how they can be so selfish and unaware as to cause such damage, injury, and to affect the results of so many riders. I hope fans who cause crashes are punished severely.

I suspect that this was the fools first time at the side of the road of a bike race.... the speed of the vehicles before the Peleton should of been a clue as to the velocity of the bunch when it appears.. I too was shocked at how fast these guys go the first time a Peleton went past me..

These cyclists ride downhill at insane speeds and deliberately push the limits, often crashing as a result. They can hardly complain about safety! Especially when the fan was clearly in view and they could have easily avoided.

easy to fix: have a review board check the video. If it was negligence heavily fine the culprits causing crashes and interfering with the race's safety. And have them immediately apprehended for identification purposes.

I’ve been a fan of Tour de France for years. I’m appalled by that spectator. Have some respect. I hope the cyclists are okay. Hope the person with the sign is held accountable.
