On 9/11, This Canadian Town Welcomed In Stranded Passengers

Great Big Story

In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, United States airspace was shut down and hundreds of inbound flights needed a place to land. Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador became one of those places. That day, 7,000 shaken and disoriented passengers arrived in Gander, nearly doubling the town’s population of 11,000. The entire community got involved by literally and figuratively opening its doors to stranded passengers who never forgot the hospitality of the small Canadian town.

An amazing story of a small town in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada with a Big Heart ! These Gander residents are truly remarkable and kind. They knew how to organize, procure supplies and feed an army of people and bed them for the night. The Gander airport is known by all airlines as the first point of refuge after crossing the Atlantic if your plane has an emergency. Bless them. Their runways are able to accept any Jumbo jet in the sky. The Town of Gander, Newfoundland will always be remembered with love by the people who landed there. God Bless the good people of Gander always !

It's airport was built during WW2. As a way for planes to watch boat's heading for the UK. The jumbo Jets almost killed the airport. The and yet it was their to save them when they needed the help.

I am Canadian and always have met the loveliest Americans when I visit the states. They have always been so warm and welcoming whenever I visit. My favourite American city is Chicago and I have a blast there and everyone I asked for directions stopped and helped! I also found everyone sooooo warm and kind in Portland, Oregon and so many other places. And Americans are some of the sweetest tourists... So much to love about the USA although I feel the media often just feeds the world the worst bits and that is not a fair representation at all. ♡

Canadian here. I don't know if you'll see this reply a year after your post but some years ago I visited Arlington National Cemetery. I can't tell you what an emotional experience that was for me. I lost some uncles and my father was badly wounded in WW2 and it all kinda hit home at once. My son in law was in Afghanistan and had to shoot a boy about the same age as my oldest grandson and now has sever PTSD.. He has just entered a treatment facility but this will linger for the rest of his days. We make sacrifices for the freedom we both share a deep value for and it makes us more than brothers in arms. Thank you for your service.

Quite frankly, as an American, I would never doubt for a second that the most gracious and generous people to the north would drop everything they were doing to help their neighbors to the south, and every other country impacted, to the absolute best of their ability-and beyond. I sincerely hope that Canada knows that we would do the same for them without a blink of the eye despite our-as of late-cranky and less than sunny dispositions. There is good reason why for centuries our two borders have been for the most part unguarded and undivided.

Many people say “why does God allow suffering?” I think that through suffer and bad times , humanity and hope rises, it tumbles our comfort zone and make us empathic with others. There is a story of a priest that was on a hospital wandering on every room just look if someone needed something . In one room he watch a daughter feeding her terminal ill mother , and what he saw.. “I didn’t see suffer or misery , on that room I saw love and kindness , I saw a daughter giving back all the love she received when she was young a bond that with last with them forever. “ . Great video , great story.
