This is easily the best way to travel between Amsterdam & Berlin, city centre to city centre from €39.90 with a surprising amount to see on the way. I have put practical info plus photos of what to look out for on the journey at www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/amsterdam-to-berlin-by-train.htm

I love those classic IC trains. They remind me of the D-trains and IC & EC trains of my childhood. Also, they have huge windows compared to ICE trains, and as they are pulled by locomotives rather than having motors under most carriages, they feel quite different to travel in. No wifi, but a more pleasant experience on the whole. Travelling in them feels more likea journey, less like a "fast long distance commute". Of course, there are other IC trains (including double deckers), but those classic ones are the best.

I did this, catching the Stena line boat then two changes of train to get to Hengelo. The through ticket from London to Hengelo is great value and the DB fare from Hengelo to Hannover is cheap. The passage under Hannover Hbf has great food.

I think I'd prefer the seating in 2nd class - the 1st class seats seem nicer but those 6 person boxes seem built to displease - if you prefer to look out the window, you're potentially tying up a table that the people closest to the door might like to use for their laptops.

Thanks for posting this video! This connection will be slightly faster from December 15, 2020. No locomotive changeover in Bad Bentheim due to the use of multi-voltage locomotives and the stations Minden and Belin-Spandau will be skipped. The wish of at least the Dutch Railways is to make the entire line a high-speed line (or to run the connection via Düsseldorf), which means that the travel time between Amsterdam and Berlin from 6:30 hours now can be reduced to 3:30. - 4:00 hours.
@daviddietzen3735
@daviddietzen3735 3 года назад
Sadly you're incorrect, by December 2020 only a few trains during busy (summer) periods will be 10 minutes faster by skipping a Dutch stop. The Vectrons that NS has leased will only be used for Nightjet to Cologne (which also starts Dec 2020) and occasionally this IC up to Bad Bentheim, but no further. So no drastic changes to timetable or rolling stock yet. By 2024 the new Talgo ECx trains will be introduced, and those will indeed not require a locomotive change at Bentheim anymore. Top speed is 230 km/h (as opposed to 200 km/h now) which saves another few minutes on the Wolfsburg-Berlin high speed line. As far as I know, it's not Berlin-Spandau but Stendal that will be skipped (alongside Minden).

Unfortunately, my in-laws' live near Hengelo and I was going to the Harz mountains via Hannover. So this showcases the train, just not the stations at each end. Better than no video at all! It only has a shelf life of a few years anyway, new Talgo-built trains will enter service on this route in 2024.

ICEs should be used on this line instead of slower intercity trains and there should be less stops in small cities. This would shorten the journey dramastically and the overall travelling comfort would be higher. It would make perfect sense because passenger volume is high on this line and train infrastructure in the northwest part of Germany is not ideal, especially for long distance trains.
@lausimeyer6558
@lausimeyer6558 3 года назад
Last year, they already ordered new trains for exactly this route to replace the over 40 years old rolling stock (spanish Talgo trains): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QXJMq2y5ix4.html

@@lausimeyer6558 Fair enough but there is still a lot to be improved. I think ICEs and less stops should be mandatory on this route.
@daviddietzen3735
@daviddietzen3735 3 года назад
@@davinnicode ICE is not viable since DB only has a very limited amount of international ICE trainsets, and they're already struggling to properly run the existing Frankfurt-Amsterdam/Brussels services. (The past few summers, multiple trains a day got structurally cancelled for weeks straight because there weren't enough spare trainsets during warm periods.) ICEs are also way too expensive on this service given that they only could reach a decent speed (250 km/h, which is still below their designed top speed of 300-320 km/h) on Wolfsburg-Berlin, which is barely 25% of the route. They would not save enough time to make up for the increased operating costs. I do agree that the number of stops should be reduced, but sadly local politicians on both sides of the border have a bit too much influence in the decision-making. "Skip all stops except my very important village, we demand a direct international service!" etc etc.
@lausimeyer6558
@lausimeyer6558 3 года назад
@@davinnicode Only on the Berlin-Wolfsburg section, ICE trains are faster (250 km/h) than those IC trains (200 km/h). A multi-tension engine would avoid the changing of locomotives at Bad Bentheim and accelerate the journey - what will be the case for the ordered Tago-Trains. Comfort will be the same.

I've ridden this train before 5 or so times from Hamburg- Rotterdam/Amsterdam. Let me tell you, this is a pretty horrible train to ride in the summer, the air con has been broken on every occasion and the train heats up very badly. Also, if you go on with an Interrail ticket, you probably won't get a seat because there is a reservation system where every ticket buys you a seat, so if you come on with an Interrail ticket you have to probably sit in one of the dirty spaces between the carriages. I'd reccomend taking a regional train via either Enschede or Hengelo!
@daviddietzen3735
@daviddietzen3735 3 года назад
You can easily buy seat reservations (without a ticket) at DB's website or ticket office. That way you have a guaranteed seat even with an Interrail/Eurail pass.
