ON Dialects and Languages presents part 1 in our series on the "Definite Articles" in Haitian Creole.
In this lesson we introduce the 4 definite articles used in Haitian Creole and the rules that govern when they are to be used. Also we work on vocabulary building by using some Kreyòl words to give examples of the correct way to use the definite articles.
Please be sure to follow through with the other parts of this lesson for a more thorough understanding this concept. Also, please see the free PDF of the lesson in the link below.
Remember to practice, practice, practice. Keep up with these lessons and you will be well on your way to speaking, understanding, and having complete fluency in Haitian Creole. It's ON!

Could you add a part 4 where you explain the jump from 'an' meaning 'the' to 'an' changing 'mwen an' to 'my'. As in the sentence 'Machin wouj mwen an'. The 'an' is no longer 'the' and now turns 'mwen' into ''my'. I'd love more examples of this. Hope that makes sense 🙂

I’ma a 68 Years old Haitian man., overtime. you refer to my language as creole or Haitian (kreyól) you are contributing in takeaway from the Spirit essence from our independence. Understand our identity and our language was never to be recognized. They failed with Saint - Dominique. But over time Haitian have established the need of the language . language should be respectfully established the language the young nation . After the assassination of our the funder of the nation, Haitians adopted French as their national language.

Thank you friend. I would love to hear more from your perspective. How does calling it a Creole take away from our independence. To me (not a linguist) and most linguists, it points to its historical origins and formation.

So "the" comes after the noun? I have never seen a grammar rule like that.

A good video but too many gaps when trying to think of examples. It would be much better if you were more prepared.

Brother ! Why is it impossible for you to say that you are teaching people Haitian? Let people understand that you are teaching them the youngest member of the Latin family of languages.

Thank you my friend. Would you classify it as a Latin language? Why is that? Some people do. Is it because most of its vocabulary words are from French? The structure that sets the backbone and grammar of our language is African. Shouldn’t we classify it instead as a Bantu language? Some people think it should be. And that’s the beauty and singularity of languages that are classified as Creoles. They carry that element of being connected to more than one language family. I’m happy to learn from your perspective too. Mèsi anpil wi.

You should identify yourself as a Haitian Creole (kreyól).
