In 1997, Michael Schumacher arrived at Suzuka 9 points behind leader Jacques Villeneuve, needing to finish ahead of his rival to stay in the title fight. We arrive at Suzuka 18 points behind Schumacher, needing to do the same. Can we keep the title fight alive?

This is round sixteen of my second attempt playing through the Psygnosis and Bizarre Creations classic - Formula 1 97 for the Sony PlayStation.
Despite owning a copy of this game for over 20 years, I have never won the World Championship. So after a failed attempt with Olivier Panis, I'm re-teaming with Jean Alesi to try and make it happen.
I'd love to hear your memories of playing this game! Did you have any close championship battles? Who did you play as?

You chased WILLIAMS NUMBAH ONE like a cheetah chasing a gazelle, so unlucky to taste the dirt for that brief moment. I thought you had him then. Glad you got him in the end, but alas, it was too late to mount a serious challenge to the Red Rockets. Still an amazing drive, proud to be a subscriber and sometime commentor 🤩

About the real-life race: Villeneuve already had a suspended ban coming into Suzuka 1997 for ignoring yellow flags earlier in the season. That's why he was singled out of all the drivers who ignored the yellow flags at this race, and was given a ban (which was then appealed by Williams so he could start the race). So technically not FIA favouring Ferrari in this instance. 😀
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 5 месяцев назад
Ah fair enough, I'd not clocked that at all. A clever move to appeal then so he could at least try to run some interference even if he knew he'd get DQ'd. I mean, it didn't work, but still. 😅 To be fair, this is before the days they got the Ferrari International Assistance nickname. 😂

IIRC that was San Marino going by a season review I was watching earlier on, it specifically said both williams cars had not slowed down, not just Jacques though so I'm needing to check if HHF only had that one time or notr
@TheOutsideLine
@TheOutsideLine 4 месяца назад
Or maybe Jacques had done it a third time elsewhere, so Suzuka was the third strike for him?
@jacekatalakis8316

Found the writeup online, here's the important bits: In free practice on Saturday morning at Suzuka, however, Jacques fell foul of the FIA stewards by ignoring a waved yellow flag on two consecutive laps. This is his fourth such incident this year and at Monza the stewards gave him a one-race ban, suspended for eight races. If he committed another yellow flag offense he would be excluded from one event. The problems began when Jos Verstappen's Tyrrell ran out of fuel and stopped just after Spoon Curve. The Dutchman drove onto the strip of grass on the left of the track and climbed out. As the cars are traveling very fast at that point it was decided that the car had to be moved. A marshal climbed in while others pushed. The man steering was obviously a little over-excited and somehow managed to steer into the barrier in such a way that the car could not be moved by hand. While all this was going on there was a stationary yellow flag. A caterpillar tractor was sent in to drag the car out of the way and so a stationary white flag was shown to indicate that there was a service vehicle present. When the Tyrrell was attached to the caterpillar the racing car snagged the barrier again and as it was pulled backwards it swung round and the tail end of the car ended up on the race track. The marshals had to come on to the track to try to sort this out and so yellow flags were waved. Villeneuve passed these flags twice and on each consecutive lap he set his fastest sector time of the session. Jacques was not the only offender - Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Johnny Herbert, Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher and Ukyo Katayama were all sanctioned for ignoring the flag but as Villeneuve was under a suspended ban he had no real defense and was duly excluded from the event. The Williams team had the right to appeal and chose to do so.

Well, that's pretty slam dunk. His FOURTH incident, and he ignored them on two consecutive laps. Jesus Jacques you made 97 way closer than it ever needed to be. 😂

Haven't commented here for a long time, Schumacher has completely dominated the race so at least you getting stuck behind Williams No. 1 didn't affect the championship too much. Hopefully you win a title before this becomes "Playing a season with every team in F1 97"

You're probably going to have to pick either Irvine or Frentzen in the future or with enough time it may end up as Justice for Ukyo Katayama, which could be intersting, although not as interesting as any F1 98 playthrough.

If push comes to shove and I can't do it with any other half-decent team, I would absolutely go for Frentzen. Although I too have a soft spot for Ukyo Katayama. 😅

Well, not completely unexpected! But alas, we must concede the WDC once more. Great Quali lap! But you were just at the limit then, and trying to push during the race had you go over that limit... but there was no other choice. If i was a bad teammate, id throw a bit of shade Berger's way. He hasnt done much to help you, and it couldve been a big help to steal some points from Ferrari along the way.

Alright, here we go. It's on MSC's hands and ... it's not like MSC has won championships in Japan before ... he hasn't, time to stretch this thing. Also, regarding the whole Newhouse yellow flag ban thing, and this is the part that's missed probably because ... MSC was the guy that benefitted, he wasn't banned for not respecting that yellow flag in particular. He was banned because he already had ignored multiple yellow flags across multiple races to the point of being warned AND fined AND threatened to be banned. He did try to claim other drivers had ignored yellows (Like, you know, The Michael) so it shouldn't have been an issue, but even Prost (Pretty sure it was Alain) was like "That's no excuse for being careless". That should be far down enough. For some reason I had my eyes fixed on the rev counter on the race start, and the moment they dropped as the red lights went off I was like "NOOOOO" because I knew the start would be bad. And I legit thought there would be pace to at least catch MSC, but John Newhouse + overdriving + Ferrari being (late 90s) Ferrari ended that. As for the Villeneuve inchident, I'd penalize both Alesi and Villeneuve. Alesi for dive bombing Newhouse in a way where he would not make the corner, Newhouse for shutting that door despite a car existing inside. Well, I guess the rest of the year, other than trying to salvage 2nd, will be one of experimenting. And extracting as much enjoyment from this game as possible, considering ... F1 98 is next and I'm already sad.

Bounce the revs high until a fraction of a second before the lights go off and hammer it. You either hold your position or lose just one. Gaining on the start is hard unless your grid position is lower than it should be.

Yeah someone else also pointed out the thing about Jim Vanteeve - completely missed that! The 97 season review doesn't even reiterate that from what I remember. However I do love Newhouse's half-hearted excuse of, "well when you're on the straight there's basically no point slowing down at that point"... my guy that is not how yellow flags work, no wonder you got banned. 😂 Yes, please talk me through a good F1 97 start procedure because it is KILLING ME! 😂 The overdriving is the bit that ruined me most though - if get by NUMBERONE earlier there's still more of a chance to get on the Ferraris. As much of a drop in quality the gameplay of 98 may be, I think it's going to end up being a fun season, or at least a mad one!

@@TheOutsideLine I mean, we are still going to be watching F1 98 so ... at the very least you will not be alone in this madness. I don't really know how to get super elite Irvine-esque starts in this game. My personnal way of doing it, putting it in a very Kimi Raikkonen way, is: "I don't know, I just hold the throttle", which is why me seeing the revs go low and you effectively being off throttle at the start made me go into Panic Station.
