And you thought Interlagos looked painful. We arrive in Buenos Aires for the last ever Argentine Grand Prix (to date).
I was concerned that this circuit would bring an end to our strong start to the season, but I was wrong. Or was I?

This is round three of my playthrough of the infamous Formula 1 98 for the Sony PlayStation by Visual Sciences and Psygnosis - a game widely regarded as the worst Formula 1 game ever made.
I never owned this game when I was younger, so I'm trying to win the World Championship on it for the very first time, on the hardest difficulty, with Giancarlo Fisichella.

I still love this game, but this session felt more like justice for David Coulthard than Giancarlo Fisichella. Watched this race last year and it caught Coulthard out in just how much speed Schumacher was able to take into each corner, when he made that little error, he probably didn't expect Schumacher to be already fully on the inside. Schumacher's style was very much suited to these era's with the less refined cars. His style being extremely difficult to master due to how much he preferred to shove the grip entirely onto the front end of the car made it hard for others to replicate.

This was sadly not the goal. 😅 Post-race, Coulthard was very angry at Schumacher and blamed him for being over-aggressive and not backing out. Don't get me wrong, Schumacher had moments where he was exactly that, but I don't think this was one of them. Indeed! He also loved a strategy where he could just go full push. Always preferred to make the extra stop work over pace management.

I think what happened at 11:32 and at 20:02 (losing the rear before the first corner) is another 'feature' of this game, namely the rear of the car sometimes starts 'bouncing' and thus losing grip. Unfortunately it cannot really be seen from the nose cam perspective, but would be clearly visible from swingman view. You can just about see the bouncing happening again at 14:48 and then again at 15:08. The 'bouncing' animation usually lasts a few seconds (the duration and 'intensity' of it seems to vary), and can start when the car runs over bumps in the track (such as on the straight before Turn 1 or in the tight downhill chicane) or high kerbs. I'm not really an expert on this game, but I faintly remember the bouncing can be influenced by adjusting the suspension stiffness. Whether softening or stiffening helps more here - I mean, who knows with this game ! My bet would be on softening the suspension to help with the bouncing. Really appreciate you suffering this game for our entertainment ! 👍

That's true , I played this game and it can happen when you go little on the grass . One side of rear starts to bounce 😅.. and you have to lift off and brake with ease without turning the car 😂 hoping you have enough road in front. But that never happened to me in a straight. I guess it's because of brake bias too

Now you've described it I know what you mean by the bouncing animation. Okay, I'll have a mess around with the suspension and might bring brake bias back a click, but will have to keep an eye out for that. At least there is a reason for it, even if the reason is complete nonsense as per usual in this game. 🤣 I'm glad you're enjoying the series so far!

The physics in this game are so bizarre! The way you can just kind of slide through a corner after completely losing it is crazy. I have a hard time playing games like this. It's the same reason why when I play Ridge Racer games I do everything I can to NOT induce a drift because I can never seem to figure out how to actually control the car once it gets into its exaggerated slide.

I'm not much of a "natural drifter" so whilst I enjoy a good rally game or drifting competitions in things like PGR4, Need For Speed, or GRID, I'm not the best at them. However at least with Ridge Racer and those other games the drifting is designed and deliberate, so you can at least have a crack at working out how to do it. Here there is minimal consistency because I don't think the physics were really designed... they just "are" 😂😂

I don't even remember on how many games did I race Argentina... I never managed to do well there. Great qualy again. Terrible tough race though. Let's think the worst is past and let's bring justice for GIancarlo. BTW I am quietly enjoying the side dish of "Justice for Alesi v3"

I always struggle at this circuit. Only time I didn't was when it was wet in the original game and the AI were underpowered. This was definitely a poor performance mixed in with some F1 98 nonsense. Yeah, I'm glad Alesi is doing well - hope he keeps scoring!

What music did you use in the "I found more bugs" section of the video? Really loving your channel so far. Really down-to-earth and loving the choice of games as well! Lots of nostalgia. Looking forward to more Monaco GP videos, and potentially TIR and IndyCar on the PS2! PS: Total Immersion Racing has some multi-class "endurance" races towards the end of the career which are pretty interesting. There's a 50-lap race at Sebring with LMP900s, GTPs, GTS' and N-GTs. Might have some potential...

Ash, I think you've been harsh on this games Sim credentials. It obviously has simulated the effects of a sudden hurricane force wind randomly blowing at turn one, the only way I can think of to explain the random slides!😂

I feel like if I'm doing the other official games, this has to be included, so I will persevere, but I really hope I do this one in one. I don't think I could face having to do it again! MGP will get a season regardless!

Probably should've done Johnny Herbert for the season just so if you bumped into Hill at this race you could've replicated his "Should've stayed the whole of South America at home." I loved Johnny's gallows humour to Louise Goodman. I know I'd feel the same as he did then. Only thing that would be different is I would've sworn a whole lot in comparison to Johnny. I never tampered with the set-ups myself. I guess I was one of those "trust the programmer" kind of people so that when I see this, I get a fresh perspective on it other than a friend going "this is shit." I can see why people consider it shit in comparison to people who are uncommunicative beyond 3 or 4 words. Or as Colin Chapman would've said about Ronnie Peterson "You know Ronnie, he'll just drive anything you give him." Not that I'm comparing myself to Ronnie Peterson at all. I mean for a start, I don't drive!

I must admit I didn't remember that quote, so I tried to find it - someone had kindly put it on RU-vid. Brilliant, brilliant stuff. His follow up line of "all we need now is a plane crash on the way home" really caught me off-guard. Perfect deadpan delivery. 😂 You are the Ronnie Peterson of PS1 racing games! I... am not. 😅 As much as I am getting frustrated in the moment with the game, I don't come away hating it or being genuinely angry. Also I'm trying to remain fair about its good points and bad points rather than be full-on "gAmE sOoOo BaD rOfL aMiRiTe GuYs!?!?!?". It could end up being a really close season with lots of on-track battles, so that's great! Also, 2 ciders.

I'm sure the end of season summary will be haunting to review. 😅 Everyone is media trained pretty routinely as soon as they get near a seat, but there are still some moments when tensions are high. Just a lot less. Absolutely!

@@TheOutsideLine Might be a good tagline for the game! We've seen it last week but other than that, it just feels like the personality has been completely wiped. They're still bastards but with PR training it's corporate bastards instead of some outright bastards - sign of the times, eh? (Does make me wince being an Alpine fan (Team Enstone through and through) and having to watch some of these RU-vidrs piling on and some commenters doing the time old "at this point they should sell to Andretti and Cadillac" like it's the pure and sensible thing to do. Given how Andretti went to the House of Representatives - that just guarantees him to be excluded from any sales. I'd like to wait until Alpine get rid of Ocon before giving Famin the boot.

Formula 1 98: 2 G+Ts, 2 beers, 2 ciders.... 😂 It is indeed. Everything managed to within an inch of its life. Which for actual on-track safety, great! But the rest... can't we just relax a bit guys? 😅 Alpine just seem to be a mess across all disciplines currently (mainly referring to Hypercars at Le Mans going poof), so hope they can figure it out. With or without Ocon, there's definitely something not working in their team setup currently.

Formula Understeer returns to ... wait that's not right ... Formula Drift returns to ... that ain't right either ... Oh lord ... oh no .... what have they done? ... I guess Argentina was so offended by their representation in this game that they never returned. This is disgusting. Always nice to discover bugs that directly affect car performance. That's something that can't possibly be an issue at all! Of course, bugs and shenanigans couldn't stop at Quali, they had to follow you into the race with ... whatever that turning into corners without input was. This was a nice, flowing track that while annoying to race at, was at time fun ... what have they done?! At the very least, this chaos will give us a championship fight. All that's needed is MSC to win in front of the Tifosi at Imola. Speaking of Italy ... I'm afraid to ask ... is Curva Grande flat?

I just don't know. It's madness. 😫 Not a bug. It's a ✨feature✨ If MSC turns it on for Imola then it's going to be really interesting! This game is a circuit ruiner, so whilst I don't know definitively, I reckon Curva Grande will be not-so-grande.
