This week we turn our attention to the Grimme GT170 trailed harvester that we use in October to harvest our potatoes for McCain's. Although our Grimme dealer is only local we service the harvester ourselves - which is very beneficial from an operator's point of view as I am gaining an understanding of how parts of the machine go together. We finish the video off having a look at one of our fields ' Fishpool' that is growing Royal potatoes in this year.

I love the workshop stuff. That looks to be a very complicated machine to service/repair, I was impressed. It must be expensive too with so many parts to replace - you need to lift a lot of spuds to cover that.

Oh the joy of drilling out the old rivets and replacing them with new ones... Definitely the most enjoyable job on any potato harvester! Have done to much on them on a Dewulf harvester, pain in the but it is! Good video JJ, keep them up!

I had quite a few of them go during the season... it’s much easier when it’s laid out on the ground but it’s still a challenge. Have you discovered an easier way than bashing them out? Drill them out?

@@JJ_MacLeod We found out that (in our case) drill them out with a 5-6 mm bit works quite good. You just drill a few mm so that the head of the rivets comes loose and then you give it a good tap with the hammer. Just a challenge to be centered when drilling...

Fine video JJ. Do you irrigate any of the potatoes? Have you any earlies? Do they get any fertiliser? Do they get earthed up? Lot of questions but I've never been around a potato farm. Cheers

Won’t be long at all! Not for much of it, usually just help with abit of wheat on the furthest farm 🚜

How many staff on the farm,? And do you employ summer staff?

Four/ five of us and yes employ two harvest staff

Why does everyone wear John Deere overalls even if they don’t drive John Deere I know fendt overalls aren’t cheap but they outlast John Deere overalls my 942 didn’t even come with any overalls

There’s a good reason... I got them free! 🤣 We didn’t get any Fendt overalls with our new 724 either! I find the Claas overalls to be good and very reasonably priced up against other manufacturers!
