On the Origin of Darkners: A Deltarune Theory

Also, Jevil is a secret boss which could be easily missed, just like the joker being mostly unused. So the idea is that when Jevil is encountered, he can do anything; and when the joker is used, it can be anything.

The NEO body’s connotation is being a Vessel. It’s a vessel that Mettaton would wish to inhabit, so it becoming it’s own Darkner is not something Mettaton would want because he’d want to be able to inhabit it.

I think there’s some absolutely essential info about Ralsei that we just don’t have yet. And yes that’s true for everything but for Ralsei I think it’s particularly true. There’s clearly something going on with him and while I don’t think he’s a villain, we definitely have some of the most incompletely info about him

Jevil can do anything because in card games the joker card is often the wild card, so he gets all the suits. Also, spamton and jevil don’t TURN into shadow crystals. Seam says that it’s hard to defeat someone who HAS shadow crystal (not a direct quote but he does say that somebody has a shadow crystal, not that somebody turns into a shadow crystal after being defeated). Spamton always turns into the item, he does not get rid of it, “let me become your strength” means that the equipment is him. Jevil either gives you the jevilstail, and goes to sleep, or becomes the devils knife (there is something about it in the dialogue, but he can also turn into it, and Noelle says it smiles at her).

Another possible connection with K Round and milk is Alphys leaving milk in the alleyway for a “cat,” which is somewhat implied to just be Susie drinking it

If I had to take a stab in the dark, I’d say Ralsei is representative of specifically Asriel as a child. He can’t be adult Asriel because Asriel is likely around the same height as his parents now, and that’s not true for Ralsei. Plus, the horns would be a reminder of childhood. I’d imagine that Asriel was changed drastically but the loss of Dess- perhaps because he inadvertently caused it. It’d make sense for Asriel to feel horribly guilty about something considering his constant confessions with Father Alvin. So in summary, I think Ralsei is the person Asriel used to be and Kris misses that version of their brother.

first of all: i think this might be one of my favorite Deltarune theory videos i've ever seen. really good job, i love the line of analysis you're on and i would love to see more of this. secondly, here's my take on the Gerson drawing and the NEO body: Seam and Swatch both tell us that the NEO body was a Lightner's creation, one that was "very important to [them]" and one filled with "[that Lightner's] own hope." and, going off the idea that the abandoned classroom was Gerson's, and that the drawing of him was something he treasured, the drawing would also be something that a Lightner considered important. if the drawing was by Alvin, it would also fit for it to be filled with Gerson's hope - people have high aspirations for their kids, after all. and Gerson specifically seems to have *hoped* that Alvin would do something with his hammer, if Alvin's graveyard dialogue in chapter two is anything to go off of. so all of this would point towards objects that are imbued with hope being somehow immune to becoming Darkners. Ralsei's first legend equates light with hope and dark with dreams, so maybe an object imbued with hope has too much light in it to become a Darkner? ...all of this also throws a wrench in the idea of Ralsei being the horned headband, but oh well. the only other idea i have is that the Gerson drawing is the man behind the tree, but that's a crack theory.

I have a more reasonable theory about the starwalker birds When you get a "Good Job!" sticker in pre-school or something, you would feel proud, powerful even, like your above everyone else, like an angel, thus the starwalker has angel wings. But when the school day ends, you would usualy take the sticker off before the next school day. kinda like how the birds become powerless after you ring the bell, and what sound usally singles the end off a school day? A bell. I also have a less concrete theory about Ralsei. Ralsei is able to move his scarf like a third arm, this can be seen in his attack, or when he uses an item (At least when he has his hat) And when Ralsei is downed, he becomes a seemingly inanimate pile off clothes. This combined with his affinity for hugs, being fluffly, and conforting, Implies that at the very least, his Light world counterpart (if he even has one) is a pile of clothes (mabye including Kris's horn headband). Maybe the king for Kris is a reflection of how toriel thinks/portrays asgore acts

So, the Dreamurr family from everyone's perspective, is generally wholesome, loving, caring, kind, and look simular. He gives tutorials and tries his best to teach everyone new things, like Toriel, because she is a teacher at the school. He caring and determined to a fault, wanting to be loved and have good friends, like Asgor! AND, physically speaking, he looks like a younger version of Asriel. + He is especially this way towards Kris, blushing near him, being paired with him throughout both chapters, enjoying time with Kris which we find out during the boat ride with the picture. Things that his family may typically do. And this is likely how the whole town views the Dreamurrs. All boss monsters, that look like goats/dragons btw. So what if Ralsei isn't a connotation of Asriel specifically, but a connotation of Dreamurr-ness, or of good times spent with them. For Kris, they're the kind people who adopted him. For everyone else like Susie, Noelle or Berdly, again, probably the whole town sees Kris's family this way too.

As each suite has its own connotations, & I believe that Spades are a symbol of death, so dose that play a role in King from Deltarune? ♠️💀 Emeralds are HEALING stones… could that be why Ralsie is green and heals you? (Amethyst is also a healing stone and purple is considered a healing color, but I mentioned emeralds because they’re green)

now, no way you look at gerson (either random abstract or "that guy") seem plausible to put in a dark world. this brings up even more ralsei questions, if proven true. ralsei is pretty clearly the conotation of kris and kris alone. it seems pretty similar to the "just that guy" example and the neo suit of only one person knowing about it. this might explain his lack of turning into stone due to his lack of theme.

Overall a really enjoyable video and I really enjoyed the speculation, similar to Jaru but less insane (I love Jaru’s theories but wow they’re wild)

The neosuit also could have that connotation of what it was in undertale. When we/kris shake it desperately, i feel like that's cause its recognized.

Personally I really think Ralsei is either the horns or Kris’s physical body. Most likely the Horns though. Kris doesnt seem super fond of Ralsei, the connotation of those horns to Kris could be their struggles to fit in

It's worth noting that we don't actually know if Ralsei is a darkner, or at least a normal one. With all the talk of angels and demons hinted at... Well, this might be something more. However, in that respect, he does have a lot of "Devil/Satan" themes that may point to Ralsei being the red headband: - Literally called Dark Prince, Prince from the Dark, etc. Satan has the title of "Prince of Darkness." - When you first meet him, me talks in text that is not in a text box and cautions you to not be alarmed, because he is not your enemy... This is a stretch, but that is similar to how angels greet mortals; "BE NOT AFRAID." - He wants to banish heaven - He is a prince of a world seemingly below the earth, and which you descend to over and over. Worth noting: The save point notes that the castle is "Below" castle town, not looking over it like you would expect of a normal castle - His looks. Although the immediate thought is "Dreemur," the dreemurs and other boss monsters intentionally borrow imagery common to generic demons and common depictions of devils, being goats with horns, fangs, etc. He distinguishes himself from other boss monsters by having red-tinged eyes and horns - Appears to have a great amount of strange awareness, beyond what other people have. This could be evidence that he is unique, but could equally just be 'in-built' is he is supposed to be a devil or fallen angel as these creatures have a supernatural knowledge as an ability - He is, very curiously, entirely ambivalent to eating a heart. Feed him the HeartsDonut, and his only comment is that it's "Sticky." by contrast, Noelle is mortified when she notices the blood, Kris heals next to nothing which implies they can barely stomach it, and Susie thinks it's awesome that she gets to eat blood - He comments, "I'm a good devil, okay?" if you give him the Jevilstail - The area around his castle is a strange, uncanny place full of oozing orifices and eyes - Starting in chapter 2, he's wearing a different robe. Look closely - it actually starts around his shoulder-blades, has a strange gap in the front, and a fluffy bottom - They might legitimately be two wings crossed over each other. This is moon logic, however. This would be in-line, if he were intended to be a goat-devil. - The King calls Kris "Lightbringer" but also later assumes Kris is the leader. - There is a door with six wings, a black heart, and a crown in Ralsei's Castle. It also has an Angel Wing theme. Satan is a fallen angel. But like, this could just be an angel theme; this one is also a stretch That's getting a little off-topic. I'm on the verge of being like, "Satan is destined to fight Michael at the apocalypse," haha. But, at least some of that seems like an oddly intentional "Devil" theme. Yet, equally, Ralsei seems kind, helpful, and generally good; he gives Kris and Susie a sense of belonging, and Susie notes he is similar to Kris' mom. Ralsei invites everyone in, likes to bake, and is a good person who avoids causing trouble... So if he is the red headband, he could have a bit of a dual-association, here: He is both what a Devil Horn Headband literally represents as this kind of prince of darkness who seeks to fight heaven. But, also what Kris saw that same headband as - A desire to be part of the Dreemur family, maybe even to be like Asriel, and that familial bond and home that Kris may want. ...Or maybe he's literally Satan and playing everyone to fight Archangel-Knight Michael during the apocalypse, who can really tell at this point?

Haven't finished the video (quite yet) but I want to comment before I forget. I was always on the assumption that the darkners' histories are mostly based on imagination, as kids are real good at coming up with stories for even the silliest inanimate objects. Spamton's personality is probably influenced by how Noelle imagined the guy on the other screen to be (not realizing it's a spambot). Also Jevil's "I can do anything" comes from the fact that Joker cards are supposed to replace lost/missing cards. They can be any missing card, you just have to mark them as the one you're missing. They can also be powerful cards in some rulesets, too. K. Round is also powerful because a "King me" checker piece is powerful too. I imagine Seam, as an old plush friend, likely "played" card games with a lonely kid at some point, giving him some history with the card characters.

I find your idea of how save points would work in the light world absolutely fascinating. Someone to save and load the entire universe ; who in the light world could be this determined ?

After a long argument I believed that the DF retroactively considered the object's history to shape their personality, like an unsuccessful spambot, or a Laptop being moved from a card-filled classroom to a library, and then built from that. In my mind, the spinning top = cake association would have to do with how whisks in stand mixers spin, and are used for cake batter. Of course, that means the Italian Chef part makes less sense, but it could be (admittedly flimsily) handwaved by saying a lot of people conflate chefs and bakers in their minds. I like this video for being less of a concrete theory, and more a jumping off point for considering the implications in how darkners/dark worlds are designed, since I feel a lot of people (who aren't hardcore theory nerds at least) don't really think about how they work (as in the association/thematic stuff this video is about, obviously stuff like dark fountains, the roaring etc. are some of the game's main story hooks. Point is, this was a cool first theory video to post!

Maybe Ralsei's existence comes from a mix of Kris's desire to be closer to his family. Both ae being monster and a direct child of the dreemurs. And the fustration of that just not being the case, questioning if those thoughts are doomed to being left isolated in his mind. Having no other human (Either willing or not) to relate too, when it comes to his life What Ralsei's denotation could be is old clothes, and those horns Kris had, being stored away in that old classroom by Toriel herself (Duh she doesn't want Kris or for anyone losing that stuff in the house, thinking that it would be safer in the school she works in. Maybe coming there to just look at or something weird)

i think ralsei is who kris wanted to be when they were younger and wearing the horns; they wanted to be like the other dreemurrs a goat monster with a name similar to asriel, as his name is a combination of asgore and toriel's names so an anagram of that would help them fit in more in their eyes. (side note i think rudy named kris because of how infamously bad asgore is with names) kris wanted to fit in and being the same type of monster that act similarly to asriel would help with that.

looking at connotation theory, its interesting how during the snowgrave route, a lot of obstacles are replaced by enemies to fight. could show how noelle's view of the dark world's challenges changes from being a fun adventure into an rpg grind-fest.

33:15 I always thought Lancer was the Ace of Spades. This makes sense to me because depending on the game, the Ace is either higher or lower than the King card in a suit. This can mimic how Lancer starts out low being sent out by his father to stop the lightners, by himself. Then at the end of the chapter he diposes his father and takes over as ruler.

The Roaring: Lancer turns to stone when exposed to darkness from outside his home fountain. The Titans bring their own darkness from outside all other worlds. The Roaring of Titans is the silence of infinite darkness.

25:13 a funny thing that might have played a part in the Ponmans design, specifically the single celled part is that pawns can only move a single cell on the grid at a time, the only time this is not the case is when it attacks and when it’s still on it’s first move. Maybe reading too far into things but for a minor enemy with a minor character feature I see no harm in believing the funny details! There’s also a lot more you can read into chess but I’m sure you already know about chess theory.

Upon reflection, the Darkners have a lot in common with the toys from Toy Story...

I think that dark fountains are just portals to other worlds. The dark worlds were always a thing, and the fountains are how you get into the world.

My preferred explanation of whose connotations influence the form of the Darkners are those of Lightners who have interacted with them. Like, Swatch became fashionable after a Lightner (likely Mettaton) used him to design a robot. Spamton and the smiling plug seemed to get a fair number of connotations from Noelle, and the Spamton Sweepstakes implies that they have/had some internalization of these connotations before the Dark Fountain was made.

This is a great video! Really interesting theory, I've heard so many interpretations of what makes a Darkner a Darkner and they're all so different! For example, with what you were saying about not knowing what Ralsei is (around 1:10:53) Daisynose has a pretty good video about their interpretation of what Ralsei is in the Light World (and honestly I did NOT see it coming).

There are a lot of card decks that used to have imps or devils on the joker card and bots make a lot of sense as puppets. So your previous theory in my opinion still holds true for Jevil and spamton.

Even though we don’t have too much information on Berdly but I feel that Sweet Cap’n Cakes we’re influenced by Berdly. And my evidence is look at Berdly and then look at them.

Seam and Jevil were objects in the same room. Could just be that sometimes the kids put the joker cards with the cat doll when playing games the joker wasn’t involved in. Also it occurs to me that Seam being the only one who could capture Jevil makes sense because while a Joker can do anything in the bounds of a card game, a doll can be or so anything within the realm of a child’s imagination meaning Seam potentially has power to rival Sans within the dark world.

16:38 they showed more hints about Berdly and his own flashback tells a lot aswell, he is more than a gamer who likes to be smart he is consumed by the culture and mindset of both it's what he excels in and can feel good about, so any darkener that boosts about themself probably reflects that from him just look at the spelling bee, he cares about Noelle but winning that contest against her meant SO much to him because he was a nobody before that and he calls it an "addictive power" himself, he took Noelle's place as number one but she still stayed his friend and helped him and he's gratefull for it and now he's "stuck" like that because he needs to keep up the high expectations if he wants to stay somebody (wich he all said, not me assuming, but what I am assuming is that his parents now finally payed more attention to him, even if it's a bit, because it's so damn common but I also think his parents are distant) I like the theory that Queen's treatment of everyone reflects their own mothers their treatments, because it really lines up especially with Noelle and her important and rich mayor mom (and being her only child left) so it shows that Berdly only wants Queens attention so much by showing off because he wants to be the golden child (golden statue reference lol) to her, it gave him attention of adults before so it seems like the only thing that works, because next Queen's attention all he wanted was Noelle to stay at his side and have a world where they can stay number one and number two (because that brought them both happyness before) and there are a lot of darkeners who want the Queen's attention and admiration, or just others their attention, darkerners like these are plently (just look at the swatchlings being birdlike)

I think the gerson drawing was in a way made into a darkner with seam being a shopkeeper with tons of lore just like gerson and I think Its the players view instead of kris susie or the knights

I honestly think more that the knight's connotations, and/or the people there WHEN the dark world is made, are what give the darkners their personalities. unless its an object the person brings into the dark world, such as what's on suzie and kris when the enter turning into armour and weapons. i think this just makes more sense, since otherwise theyre editing the dark world AFTER it was made, which seems really implausible? the only thing that throws a wrench in that is Ralsei, who's object (most likely the red horned headband) is directly related to kris. the only explanation i can think of is that the knight is related to kris, in some way. probably not asriel but i guess it could be?? but it makes a LOT more sense if its dess... i do think thats the case even if theres not a ton of evidence for it. theres also not a lot of evidence AGAINST it lmaoo. but id love to hear anyone elses thoughts too!!

My theory regarding Ralsei is that if 1. Ralsei is Kris' horned headband and 2. A Darkner's traits are based on the thoughts of the person who is in the Dark World at the moment Then Ralsei would have to essentially be Kris' monstersona, right? I mean, it's pretty heavily implied that Kris wore the headband to feel like they better fit in with their adoptive family. In other words, it represents how they would want to be. So, it would stand to reason, Ralsei is the person Kris would want to be. For one, he looks like a Dreemurr, the way Kris wishes they were. And then there's the fact that Ralsei is the model child, the kind who does well at school, never gets scolded, and others want as a friend. And Kris is a kid forever living in their brother's shadow, a brother who is a model child, and that can create those feelings of jealousy, the "I wish I was more like my sibling" - which could have influenced the resulting darkner so much that his name is literally an anagram of Asriel. Might as well explain why RalseiTea doesn't heal Kris for much - I can imagine thinking about the person you want to be standing before you, being their own separate being, can create some mixed feelings

So about the whole "queen acting like noelle's mother" thing...I guess we could say it really WAS a dream since whatever lightners and the knight think about for a dark world, it becomes a dark world just like a dream world

I think it's possible that Spade King was set up to remind people of Undertale's Asgore, and that it will be revealed to be inspired by someone in Susie's life. In the first chapter of Deltarune there are so many times where the writing specifically designed to make you think of Undertale, and then surprise you when something different happens

5:50 fyi, the black joker card is often referred to as the jester and the red joker card is often referred to as the magician, which is presumably where seam gets his status from. I don’t know why he has it considering he’s a plush and not a card but my best explanation is he has the red joker card shoved up his ass.

The drawing of gerson is taped to the side of the cabinet. The same cabinet that's believed to be that card castle. So that drawing is still there in the dark world, but their darkner form is stuck on the side of the castle so we don't see then at all

59:09 There is a theory that states that the Knight is Gerson’s hammer infused with Gerson’s dust and infused with determination. The Knight would have all of Gerson’s memories similar to Flowey so when the Knight created the Card Kingdom dark world they probably didn't think of anything of the drawing other than Gerson (aka themself) or even Alvin (if he was the one who drew it). This could be linked back to the King and how he is a cogitation of a father figure and that could be the reason why the Knight put him in charge.

re: the erasers. I used to full on eat erasers as a kid. they’re one of those “forbidden candy” objects, I’d say way moreso than chalk. no idea if this is a common experience but if I was hungry or bored during school I would eat my eraser, straight up. so susie seeing them as candy is not that surprising to me lmao

So, I have no idea if anyone else brought this up, but Queen's connotation being motherly is probably because of the term "motherboard". I felt it important to point this out because your logic with that point felt very strung together (no offense, everything else I've seen here has been pretty well thought out, which is why it stood out to me.)

Noelle has a particularly strong influence over the cyber world, but that's because she has a very high amount of determination, and that's probably gonna be a major plot point going forward. No wonder Queen wants her to replace the Knight... I think initially though that the connotations of the dark world and also some general things about it is determined by its creator (aka the Knight), someone putting their will into a knife, stabbing the ground, Ralsei says the fountains have a will and if darkners don't align with it they turn to stone... etc. This could possibly explain why the closet dark world is so weird (HalfBreadChaos did a video about it) : it wasn't made by the Knight. I at first thought the connotations came from the will of its creator, but also this is interesting...

Imma need a jaru video on what the hell makes a darkner "alive" enough to be a darkner and a food item, armor, weapons or a plain item altogether. Also why don't they turn to stone in a another world???

im a little late to the party, but i think that jevil's devil connotation is perfectly reasonable! for a long time there have been connotations of mischief and chaos associated with the devil, especially when he is said to be on earth messing around with people. the "temptations" are often fun things like gambling and parties, which while jevil doesn't give off party animal vibes he does have a fun nature about him. also not to compare deltarune to shakespeare, (i mean there is a hamlet reference in undertale lol) but the idea of an otherwordly freaky jester reminds me a lot of the jester in king lear, who is implied to be a figment of the mad king's imagination. (in some iterations, his lines are spoken entirely by king lear's actor, implying the jester is a voice in lears head). there is also mention of a "flibberjibbet" in king lear, which is sort of a demon that walks on earth to fuck shit up mentioned by the jester! the idea of the devil/jesters intertwining is not very foreign for medieval lore, especially since you pose that the card deck is so old it has knaves in. love the video!!!

if you think about the cabinet as the castle, and the drawing being in the top right corner, maybe we just never encountered it as it was somewhere obscure/ hidden, since rit was essentially plastered on the side of the castle.
