Let's lay some track and get some trains running! In this installment of the On30 Goldfield & Calico project, I lay some cork roadbed and Peco On30 flex track and turnouts. Then it's time to wire everything up for reliable operations on the DCC (digital command control) system, with explanations of the wiring buss, feeders, gaps, and even frog juicers!

I'm glad you put a spiral easement. As a former Southern Pacific Maintenance of Way Surfacing gang track foreman makes me happy. It makes it very realistic.

I cut all my roadbed from cork sheets on a band saw. Cut it to width and then rip in half with the bevels like production roadbed is. It takes a little time but I have more time than money.

It’s funny how passing comments trigger memories. At 2:15, your remark about diverging roadbeds brought back visions of standing on a school stage too many years ago, and having to recite Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” I’m a ship modeler but enjoy the scale railroad scene and the talented individuals who create these miniature worlds. As a “smooth operator,” keep it coming.

Please tell your Brit compadres to make more left-hand turnouts! Those are as hard to find as hen’s teeth these days, and absurdly expensive on eBay when they pop up ($75!). They’re the best, though, so I’ll keep hunting. :-)

I so enjoy learning from your videos. I have been watching Dales on Toy Man to learn about wiring it helps but I still get alittle lost when it comes to wiring the board you guys use. Someday will figure it out but first need to learn how to solder it is not as easy as it looks when you do it. Thanks for sharing ever little bit gets me closer to knowing. GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖

Very informative to watch, and yes I do watch Dale’s series as well (and take in as much as I understand for now!). I do have one suggestion for your videos, especially one like this - Perhaps you could do some close-up pick-up shots of what you were talking about and doing on camera. As an example for this video showing close-ups of the spikes after they are pushed in, and the soldered wiring and joints, etc. that you could then edit in at the point you do them so we can see how they look much easier. Sort of like on those cooking shows where you see a wide-shot of them dicing an onion, but then it cuts to a close up. I know it would add an extra couple of video and editing steps, but I think it would be helpful for those of us who are still learning the process. Just a suggestion….. Thanks!

I was amazed that you were successful soldering the feeders to that weathered rail! I’ve never managed to get a good solder joint in those conditions without cleaning up the rail to a shiny condition!

I understand the whole polarity issues involved with those switches, however one thing I can't understand so much is why that piece of track costs so much and you still have to do all of that wiring to make it work properly.

Now, I get so easily confused with feeders. I use a Red and a Black Sharpie pen to distinguish between the red and Black Buss and feeder.wire holes in the plywood or Homasote table top. I started out not using the pens to distinguish what was what and of course got them confused!!!! When I was younger, I wired up my complete DC layout without doing the color coding. However at 74 this process has helped me remember the correct process! .

When I watch a Craftsman modeler like yourself... Laying this track... I say out loud... Thank God for Kato Unitrack!!!... I'm a train operator... NOT a Modeler there's a Big Difference... Love watching your videos on On30 stuff😊... If I was doing On30 I would really consider battery power. Thanks for posting 👍👍👍
