Great video, appreciate the effort. I'd add not replacing the metal cover drain plug until the end. After refilling with oil you can fire it up and check for leaks around the drain plug, then replace metal cover. Keep up the good work!
@RMA Garage Sir are you still using the rotella 15w40 ? I just went and bought some and there are some telling me not to use it in my generator cause its diesel oil. It's a 4000 onan just like yours on a 2020 coachmen Freelander 21QB motorhome .
@@davenstorm7271 I am sorry for not responding sooner....somehow I missed this..... The directions in the Onan manual say to 15W-40 in my climate zone. The oil says diesel on the bottle but it can be used with other equipment with the same viscosity. I did a lot of research on this.
@RMAGarage I called Onan I asked about the 15W40 they told me to use 10W30 . They said that would cover temps 0 to 100 degrees . So I don't know what to do .
Love your videos - we'er newbies and love your modifications - saw your video on the plywood in the basement - do you have a video on how you removed the luan and replaced with plywwood.
Hi RMA Garage, Thank you for the video. It was very helpful! I'm about to take care of this maintenance on my Onan 4000 generator. Is there no oil filter that needs to be changed with the oil?
would be nice to see your opinion on checking oil level after you changed. You mentioned that the oil level was right to the top of the fill opening. It seems like that would be too full? Do you check oil level with the dipstick screwed all the way in? or with it at the end of the threads. Every lawn mower I had says to check oil level from the end of the threads, with the dipstick not screwed all the way in. Not sure of Onan is that way. Comments?
Thanks for the comment. I have changed the oil many times and it always was right near the end of the fill opening but not all the way up. I guess in my world if you can see the oil in the fill opening, it's closer than other engines. It is strange Onan does this but it works. I check the oil by not screwing it in. I have checked it that way every time with no issues.
Hows your generator doing you still using the Rotella 15w40 diesel oil in it ? I just bought some for mine realky concerned about using it , just bought the motorhome in Feb !
I checked my manual and their recommendation for temps up to 100 degrees and that is 15W-40 (Onamax) brand. They do reference a range from 32 degrees F and higher and that they say to SAE 30 (Onamax) Brand. But the manual just says higher. I do not know how high above 100 degrees F. I know this is not definitive, but its the best info I have.
Doug, We added the resonator (www.rvupgradestore.com/Exhaust-Resonator-p/55-1669.htm). We bought the resonator and contacted our local weld shop to cut the exhaust and weld the resonator on. Thank I painted the exhaust with VHT header paint (www.vhtpaint.com/high-heat/vht-flameproof-coating). I bought the paint at the local auto parts store. Hope this helps.
Do you have to do things like this or can I get it paid for? How many things do I need to do.. I bought an rv and you and the things you do are scaring me ..
You do not have to do these things yourself. You can take your RV back to the dealer to do most maintenance items. You might be able to find a general mechanic to perform the work as well. No worries. (2 Timothy 1:7-KJV). Thanks for the comment.
