We recently bought a 2015 Forest River Georgetown motorhome. It only has 10K miles, and I suspect it's been parked a good deal of its life. Consequently, the carb on the generator isn't working well. I've tried Sea Foam, and spraying the jets, but hasn't helped much. We have some trips planned, time is up, $300 gets a new carb. Very easy to install. Watch the video, decide for yourself if this is a DIY for you. It now runs like new.

When you put the gasket in then the spacer, you were supposed to put the other gasket in and then the carburetor. that’s why it look like the gasket was interfering with the butterfly

Well done video! After watching you complete every step of the process, I am now confident that I can do this myself! I just got an estimate of $1,300 from an RV Performance shop to replace the stuck carburetor in an Onan 5500 marquis gold generator that is in my 2001 Fleetwood Bounder 32h. Thank you for sharing!

What about the gasket between the spacer and the carburetor? I seen yon put the one between the engine and the spacer!

Thanks for taking the time to show how to do it... I just bought a generic carb off amazon for $40 and will replace it as soon as it gets here. The original carb did not last long AT ALL (I used the generator twice, and the whole RV was only 6 months old when it got messed up)... Several 'old timers' told me its such a common problem with these generators that the thing to do is buy the cheap carbs and have a spare on hand at all times.

Mr. Paxton (IIRC), is a representative from Onan that said their generators die from lack of use, not overuse. They like to be run at least once a month, under load for a period of time. I do the same for all my generators now, after learning the hard way with other generators. But the Onan wasn’t my fault. I bought the RV used and I think it sat for a while. It ran like new after the new carb swap. Let us know how the generic carb works for you. I’ve heard mixed reviews. FWIW, I did buy a couple of generic carbs for my portable generators, but not tried them now that I keep them exercised.

I used the generic carbs off Amazon and they were hit and miss. One worked for a year the other worked for four hours. I just bought the Cummins carb for $650 as I was tired of troubleshooting the generic China carb.

Also when I replaced mine the darn elevation knob was not set correctly, and so after taking the darn thing off 3 times I opened my eyes and checked the obvious 😂

Outstanding video. I went with the ONAN like you did. I was able to replace mine in 20 minutes after watching your video. Just curious, what were your symptoms to replace? Mine would surge with no load, Makes it tough to sleep.

Did it run at all before the swap? My Onan 5500 won’t run at all.

It would run for a few minutes, then shut down. If your float is stuck closed, or the fuel pump has died, it won't run at all. I'd suggest taking off the air filter, and spraying some ether directly into the throat of the carburetor while trying to start it. If it fires, then it is a fuel delivery problem. If it doesn't, then a spark issue. You can also disconnect the fuel line at the base of the carb, face it away from everything, then try starting. It should squirt fuel. If so, likely a stuck float, or clogged jet. Good luck!

A lot of carburetors on Amazon (supposedly for the Cummins QG 5500) are 44.00 - 65.00 Do you know if they work????????????????

According to an RV repair expert here on RU-vid, the knock off carbs are unreliable. He said they look identical, but they don’t have good quality control. He now avoids them. Check out AZ Expert. Excellent channel, lots of great repair tips. FWIW, my Onan carb I installed has been working flawlessly.

Is there a difference between this $300 carb and the $59 carb on amazon? Performance wise is there a difference? That is a huge price difference

Other than being a Chinese knock-off, I have no idea! I went with the expensive OEM model, and it works perfectly. I had trips upcoming, and didn't have time to experiment. The no-risk price difference kept the wife happy! It has been working flawlessly. If you're not in a rush, it might be worth trying the cheaper model. All else fails, you can return it to Amazon for a refund. If you do go this route, please respond with the results. I'll update the description.

@@bassoneman so did the non-Onan (off band) Carb work? I just ordered a $52 one to replace ours. Ours has been doing the rev up and rev down and recently has been having problems staying started and randomly would shut off. We already replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs and air filter. Hoping the carb fixes the issues, but we do have over 1300 hours on it.
