Join me for a tour onboard the Sprit of British Columbia, the auto and passenger ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island, home of the Capital of British Columbia, Victoria. This ferry is operated by BC Ferries, and the Spirit of British Columbia is the largest ship in their fleet. This was my first time driving a car onboard a big ship like this, and I was quite impressed!

My young daughter, Victoria, and I took this ferry a couple of years ago. We headed straight to the Victoria, BC souvenir shops where they had lots of items with her name on them. We had high tea at the hotel, and bumped into a display of ornate Christmas trees in the hotel. Truly a trip to remember.

Living on Vancouver Island, and using the ferries fairly often, I just view the ferries as part of the highway system to get me to and from the mainland when needed. Never really thought they were all that interesting, lol. It’s nice to see it from other people’s points of view and how exciting it is for people who maybe don’t live near the ocean and get to take these types of trips or see these views regularly. Great video!

I usually sleep in my Van if I manage to get the top deck. If it wasn't for work and I had my family with me it would be different. Really it's just an opportunity for a nap as I usually need to take the first ferry.

Welcome to Vancouver Island! If you're still around Victoria, my suggestions to check out: Victoria's inner harbor and government street for touristy sights including the grand legislative buildings, sometimes buskers, and shopping. Victoria's downtown Beacon Hill Park is like a 'central park' with nice walking, gardens, duck ponds, peacocks, and a children's farm and goat petting zoo that Travelling Princess might love. Also downtown: Fan Tan Alley & China Town are must-sees. A little further out: Butchart Gardens ($$), and right near that is Indoor Butterfly Gardens ($), and out of town in a different direction is Hatley Castle (used in some of the X-Men movies and Deadpool .. free to walk around outside with some nice gardens). From one RU-vidr to another, thanks for what you do! My wife and I have both found your Vegas videos helpful! -Colin

Your viewers may be surprised that almost as soon as you leave Tsawwassen (the Vancouver terminal), you enter US waters and don't reenter Canadian waters until the ship is about halfway across the Georgia Straits. The actual journey is about 1 hr. 35 min, but from the time you start loading to the time you get back on the road, you should bank on at least 2 hours. And that is without any other delays. You arrive at Swartz Bay terminal, just north of Sidney, and you are still a 30 to 45-minute drive to downtown Victoria. For first-timers, it's an exciting sail, for veterans like me, it's 90 minutes of nap time.
@YellowProductions

Thanks for those timing details. And yes. I can see how if you do this regularly it could be quite boring. But for us it was fun and new :)

I once rode this ferry (in the other direction) as part of a bus trip. I imagined the bus would deliver us to the port, and we would board another bus at the other end to get to Vancouver. But of course the bus just rolled onto the ferry, and at the other end rolled off and headed to Vancouver! On the way we enjoyed the ferry including a nice lunch.

Glad you enjoyed your experience! The fleet has changed a lot over the years. I'm not that old (early 30's) but I remember when the fleet was mostly comprised of what were known as the V class ferries. The last remaining one from that era is the Queen of New Westminster. Those ferries have a loud and rather nostalgic horn that you don't usually hear on the spirit class ferries. The history of fleet is pretty interesting as well. The Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route originally had 4 vessels. Queen of Vancouver, Queen of Victoria, Queen of Esquimalt, and Queen of Saanich. Originally in the 60's when they were built they only had one car deck. Then later in the late 70's as demand increased they did a major lifting project on all 4 ships that allowed them to place a 2nd car deck on them. They were the backbone of the BC ferries fleet for about 60 years. They gradually got phased out in favour of newer and more economical ships. The spirit class ferries were the first to take over those routes. They still had 2 V class ferries up until the early 2010's. Then Vancouver hosted the 2010 Olympics and had the new C class ferries that officially marked an end to the era of the old V class "Queen" ferries. Queen of New Westminster is the only one that still remains in the fleet. They retrofitted it with natural gas engines like the rest of the ships in service. Updated the interiors etc. It primarily runs the Duke point (Nanaimo) to Tsawwassen (Vancouver) route. But does act as a relief vessel on the Vancouver to Victoria route during peak seasons around the holidays and throughout the summer.

just thought id provide some reference from someone who takes this ferry EVERYDAY; the buffet has been closed since the pandemic, the lounges have been closed significantly longer (probably a year or so before pandemic) ill nitpick here and say, this particular crossing takes closer to 1hr 45min barring on the side of 2 hours depending on where the vessel that is going the opposite way (sometimes one needs to stop for the other due to the narrow channels between the islands, this alone can take 5-10 minutes) in the summer you will see an abundance of marine wildlife, and if your lucky there will be a boomer or two on their patio on the gulf islands to wave to and a suggestion if you are going to eat onboard, you are SIGNIFICANTLY better off ordering online (there are qr codes literally everywhere) preordering online will easily save you 20-30 minutes in line, but if standing in lines are your thing, by all means but be weary of finding places to sit one final thing; dont mess with the employees (being late to your car for boarding/getting off, car being broke, etc) they are extremely temperamental and run a tight ship; few months ago guy fell asleep and the loadmasters loaded everyone behind him and left him behind (yes they can do that) ps be prepared for a lot of car alarms

Good thing the Csptain isn't screwing his ex on the upper deck or you would all be st the bottom of Georgia Straight. True story, couple never found and ferry at the bottom of the Ocean in B.C. no charges, Incompetent bc ferries and Incompetent courts.

BC ferries sucks sucks that it’s run by a private company total bullshit and unfortunate for any of us who actually live on the island

@@YellowProductions they've been restricting more and more for years, all the while gouging as much income as possible. To the point where the government is actually stepping back in partly. It's fantastic as a tourist, however for most of us (especially those that live on Vancouver island) it's literally just a mode of transportation. Often an essential one at that. Considering it's the only way to get off island still in canada. It's a complete money grab. That's it. Perfectly fine for walk on passengers though. Unless you're a smoker. In which case you'll be outside in the high wind and nic out for an hour and forty five. 🤣

@@YellowProductions granted I've caught that exact ferry and all the others, continuously, all my life. From infant to father and everywhere in between. It is fun for the kids though.
